Governor Dennis Daugaard has thus far kept a pretty tight focus on practical budget issues and stayed away from the culture war that some legislators insist on fighting.
But Rep. Phil Jensen's hoghouse amendment of his own HB 1171 into a bill to justify killing abortion doctors has roused the governor's ire. His Attorney General has visited with Rep. Jensen (R-32/Rapid City) and asked him to consider rewording the bill. And now the Governor himself---o.k., a spokesperson---has made the pages of the New York Times saying, "Clearly the bill as it's currently written is a very bad idea."
Party's over, Phil. When your Governor takes time to call your non-budgetary bill a "very bad idea," it's time to give up.
