Former Legislator Ignores Constitution, Calls for Public School Tuition

Former State Representative Charlotte "Charlii" Gilson, R-19/Yankton
Charlotte "Charlii" Gilson, Yankton

The stupidest thing I've heard all day comes not from Kristi Noem but from a former Noem colleague in the South Dakota Legislature, Charlii Gilson from Yankton. (What, do i's at the end of a name correlate with a legislator's selfishness?) Gilson declares the Yankton school distict's proposed $4.2-million opt-out "emotional blackmail." Evidently we are supposed to fire teachers quietly, so no one notices.

Then, as an alternative funding mechanism, Gilson suggests, apparently with a totally straight face, "How about a fee to attend school?"

Gee, why on earth wouldn't we do that?

§ 1. Uniform system of free public schools. The stability of a republican form of government depending on the morality and intelligence of the people, it shall be the duty of the Legislature to establish and maintain a general and uniform system of public schools wherein tuition shall be without charge, and equally open to all; and to adopt all suitable means to secure to the people the advantages and opportunities of education.

—South Dakota State Constitution, Article 8, Section 1

Morality, intelligence, stable Republic... not your concerns, right, Charlii?

Her letter today was like a box of Stupid fragments that she duct-taped together.

Oh my goodness, so Charliiiiii has given the Dems the talking point of the next election. The South Dakota Republican Party wants your vote and wants parents to pay tuition for their children to get an education.

Way to go Charliiiiii. Don't even think of walking this one back...just say it loud and proud...we don't believe in public education! Doesn't that feel better Charlii?

Charliii, as for the whole constitution thing, don't sweat it. You won't be the first Republican or Tea Bag member to pick and choose what parts you like.

The baggers are saying that the Fourteenth Amendment renders the United States null and void. Of course, that implies that Alaska still belongs to Russia as its purchase was ratified concurrent with due process. Lisa Murkowski is arguing for Native contracting rights using that inherent language in defiance of the sovereignty wing of the red state right: http://indiancountrytodaymedianetwork.com/2011/04/murkowski-bashes-anti-native-contracting-bill/

The Right is scared shitless that white people will ultimately have to pay reparations to peoples enslaved by the Founding Fuhrers who stole land to build the United Snakes.
