Madison School Board Candidate Videos Part 3: Second Bond Issue?

Last updated on 2011.04.09

In Part 3 of Tuesday's Madison Central school board candidates' forum, emcee John Knuths asks us five candidates how we should approach a second bond issue for renovating the high school and how we might build more public support for such a project.

Corey Gunderson says the last public session on the building was just "complaining." He then says he's tired of hearing about the gym, that we should just move past the gym and focus on the classrooms... of which he says the gym is one. (But Corey, when the gym is the central, indispensible part of the plan, we can't not talk about it.)

Cory Allen Heidelberger says we need to set a budget first and establish priorities. He also says the board needs to establish more openness and be honest about early voting to win back public trust:

Shawn Miller says he supports a new gym, but he worries about what happens if we get hit with more budget cuts next year, He advocates alternative fundraising. Looking in the general direction of principal Sharon Knowlton, he asks if anyone has connections with DSU and could learn how they do capital campaigns. Discussing the nice simple gyms other schools build, Shawn drops the only cuss word of the night on live radio.

Nathan Nash again begins by saying he doesn't know (Seriously, Nate? An issue that's been in the paper for months, and you don't know? Socrates may consider you the wisest man in the room, but the voters want more.) Nash indicates he'd back the same old plan, then floats the baseless claim that the low voter turnout on February 1 made an invalid sample of public opinion, and that turning out more voters will lead to passage.

Jennie Thompson will build that gym, because the art room might send her children to a fiery death (and hey, if the art room is such a hazard, isn't the principal risking our children's precious lives by letting that kiln operate?).

More to come—stay tuned! And see all of the videos on Madville Times YouTube!

Alright, this kiln thing has gotten a bit far-fetched and out of hand. No, our children are not going to be lost to a ceramic-inspired fiery death, it's a kiln, not a live bomb.

Yes, the kiln belongs outside, in a small yard shed, nothing all that fancy, and probably something we could build for a few hundred dollars over a weekend. I've heard that the middle school already has a kiln outside, and if that's the case, than that kiln should be used for both schools, schedule some fires, fill it up, and relax.

The kids are OK. It's just art class.

I want to make my point about politics. The blonde ladies video has the most views... What does that say about politics and they way we vote.

I don't know anything about any of these candidates to judge on merits and maybe she is the most qualified but it's an interesting study.
