Note to Daughter: Take the Hill… and the Mall!

To the Divine Miss K:

When you woke up yesterday, you probably wondered where Dad was.

Ah. There he is: on Capitol Hill!

Dad went to Congress to talk to important people about important stuff.

Dad also saw the Library of Congress. Alas, he didn't have time to check when Story Time is. But Mom can look that up for us online.

The Library does have a nice turtle fountain.

Here's the Supreme Court. You will work here.

There are also ducks near the Capitol. Quack quack, blub blub!

Dad walked along a big grassy park called the Mall. It's America's front yard. It was really hot yesterday, but lots of people still came out to play softball.

Hey! There's the Smithsonian! Dad and Mom will take you there sometime, guaranteed. We'll play "Look-it!" and drive Mom crazy.

This sculpture shows nurses taking care of a soldier. Someone left flowers to say thank you.

This sculpture shows three soldiers looking for their friends. They are looking at an even bigger sculpture that shows the names of 58,195 other soldiers who fought and died in a war.

You know this place... and you know who's inside, right?

That's right! Abraham Lincoln! (A nice Indian gentleman took this photo, after Dad took a picture of the Indian gentleman and his family. They think Lincoln is pretty impressive, too.)

Martin Luther King, Jr., stood right here and made his famous speech. Dad stood here, too. We all have dreams... and we all should do something about them. We'll talk more about that when Dad gets home.

Today Dad's going to President Barack Obama's house. Next time, Dad will bring you along, promise!

Love,

Dad

Thanks for the pictures! We were there a couple years ago and walked to all the sights. They are awe-inspiring and apolitical. Everyone should have the opportunity to see them.

Wonderful pictures. Can you leave a message with Congress that their grandstanding on the debt limit is shameful?

    K. thoroughly enjoyed your online postcards! A couple of her reactions:

To the turtle fountain: "That's pretty cool!" When I read her the Supreme Court bit and told her she would work there if she was a Supreme Court justice: "Or, I could be President."

She also says, "I love you, and see you on Saturday!"

I always thought there was something strangely patriotic about the softball games on the Mall. In the movies you only ever see the huge protests or big events, but day in and day out, normal people are just enjoying the national pastime in front our national monuments/institutions. It's really pleasing, somehow.

Also, for my money, the Library of Congress is the coolest building in DC.

Great pics and great story. I missed our families DC vacation because someone had to stay home and milk the cows when I was a teen. Hope to make it someday.

Brett, I agree with you about the softball games on the mall. What a great way to celebrate our country.

Awesome pictures Cory. Why didn't you take me? What are you in DC for?

Yes, great photos, worthy of a coffee-table book.

Please tell the key players in the "debt ceiling" drama to lay off the theatrics, stop tormenting the American people, act like adults, come to a solid compromise, and get down to the business of making this nation a better place for us all to spend our lives.

The Library of Congress and the Smithsonian are two of the things I'd actually like to see in the Cesspool on the Potomac--I mean, Washington.

Hope you are enjoying your time in DC...The MLK Step is my favorite place in all of the United States...make a point to go there every time I am in town.
