First Blow-out of District 8 Campaign: Heinemann Late for Straw Bale Days

Hang in there, Carthage: Dr. Heinemann is on his way!

I went to the F&M to get an oil change this morning and met Dr. Leslie Heinemann, Flandreau dentist and (at the moment) sole Republican candidate for District 8 House. He said he was on his way to Carthage to participate in the Straw Bale Days parade when his tire blew out.

"What time's the parade start?" I asked.

"Ten o'clock," said Dr. Heinemann, glancing at the clock above Nick Abraham, which read 10:30. Ouch!

Straining mightily against the metaphoric pressure, I assured Dr. Heinemann that I had nothing to do with his flat tire, though I would continue to poke holes in his campaign.

Democrats Scott Parsley and Roy Lindsay have likely already reached the end of the Carthage parade route (which can't be more than a couple blocks from the start). But Dr. Heinemann should make it in time for the 11-1 brats and pork loin lunch. (Mmmm... can I have pork loin on my brat?)

Saw Scott Parsley yesterday right before recording his SDPB "Meet the Candidates" spot. Looked like he had fire in the belly.

On a side note, when I went in to record my own recycled introduction from 2010, I informed the SDPB crew that they had the flags backwards in the photo shoot! They did not want to change them; however, I informed them this old Marine would not be posing in front of a pictures where Old Glory was not properly displayed. The folks on deck (Tim Rave, Larry Zikmund, & Scott) should have received a set after me that was proper. Seems there were a lot of candidates & current legislators who already recorded their spots that were unaware..

  2. Justin 2012.08.04

Would have been more impressive if you knew some of the things one might learn in college.

  3. Justin 2012.08.04

That was probably too mean, I do respect anybody that stands up to our moronic legislature. I just wasn't moved by your story I guess. We've got a lot more to worry about than which way the flag points in pictures, imo.

  4. Ed Randazzo 2012.08.04

It's no surprise that any of you libs are not moved by the story from a true American hero like Stace Nelson. It's also no surprise that you don't respect what our flag stands for and proper etiquette as well. But you're quick to take a cheap shot at anyone who isn't of the liberal elite with a sheepskin he uses as license look down his nose.

  5. Justin 2012.08.04

I only wish your parents had used the ole sheepskin, Ed. Or latex.

  6. Ed Randazzo 2012.08.04

Seriously, Justin. Is that your best shot?

  7. larry kurtz 2012.08.04

Stace wasn't drafted and he collected his paycheck with extreme prejudice. Power is drug you'll never have, Ed.

  8. Justin 2012.08.04

Of course not, I was dumbing it down so you would understand.

  9. Ed Randazzo 2012.08.04

All you humble souls will likely sleep well tonight under the protection of our armed forces, like Stace. You malign the heroes that defend your freedom.

  10. Justin 2012.08.04

So being in the military is a life long pass on criticism? Even when you run for public office?

Sorry, Joel Arends is not a hero. Since he made his name telling lies about a real military hero to gain votes for a guy that dodged the draft, I'm sure you despise, him right Ed?

  11. Joseph G Thompson 2012.08.05

    Justin,
I agree with you that having served in the military should not give you a life long pass on criticism and do not believe that just because you wore a uniform you are a hero. I actually hold those who served, when they are running for public office,to a higher standard.

I always look for little pearls of wisdom and have collected many from Cori's blog. I have a question for you.
What might one learn in college, excepting certain professional skills, that one can not learn in real life? In other words what did you learn in college that Mr Nelson might not have been able to learn in real life and would have made Mr Nelson's comments more impressive?
    Not really expecting a reply.

  12. Justin 2012.08.05

A true liberal arts education in fact includes almost no professional skills.

While it is true that one could theoretically learn anything on their own, without econometrics you cannot understand economics. Without calculus one cannot understand Einstein's theories. Have you ever read Claude Levi-Strauss? Do you understand scientific method? Ever done a keg stand?

What is the point of education in general? Many people in SD don't think much of it. Perhaps our children are wasting their time in high school?

If you feel a persons education is done at 18 I'm guessing you have learned a lot less than you might have if you appreciated the pursuit of knowledge. Are you afraid to learn the theories of evolution? Heck if you are churchgoing I would be shocked if your parish or congregation would even think of hiring a minister that didn't go to college. But you think governing is a lower standard?

Professionally it helps too. When I got a job on Wall Street after graduating at the top of my class, everybody else there was also highly educated. There wasn't a single person I met there that skipped college and felt the military gave them the same experience.

Heck, even Arends is working on a graduate degree.

Not sure why you wouldn't expect an answer. It was certainly not a zinger. It seems to imply that you think there is no good answer to the question, which probably says more about you than you would wish.

  13. Justin 2012.08.05

And I dont think Stace's comments above would sound any brighter if he happened to have a degree.

I just think if that were the case he may have said something more interesting and relevant to this audience.

  14. Joseph G Thompson 2012.08.05

    No zinger, just curious.

I also agree with you that many people in South Dakota don't think much of an education but that is probably because most jobs in South Dakota require very little formal education. My son and his family live in relatively affluent area of San Diego and in the 7th grade my grandson was required to pick a college or university he would like to attend and to prepare a report on that school to be presented to the class. He is entering high school this fall and when registering for high school had conversations with university admissions councilors from Stanford and UCLA who were there to help him select courses. Unheard of in South Dakota. Here, it took my father 15 years to understand why I insisted that my son have a Masters degree. There, kids and parents, are focused on advanced degrees in high school.

I too have attended college, but I have a hang up about people who believe that they are smarter than people who have not. Believe it or not, I have had to show several college graduates how to balance a check book. It is not the degree that makes a person successful and respected, it is the ability to apply knowledge.

In my opinion, which does not count for much here, you degrade your educational accomplishments by making some of the statements you have made here.

If you want something snarkey out of me here it is and I don't believe any of my snarkey statements. So you are one of those 1% ers on Wall Street who destroyed the economy and then came back to South Dakota and say bad things about Mr Nelson's education or lack there of. Or maybe, Wow those highly educated Wall Street people sure know how to build an economy.

  15. Justin 2012.08.05

I never said people without degrees can't be smarter than people with degrees.

Bill Gates never graduated from college and he is sharp as a tack.

I just find it interesting that a college degree is required for clergy and out 51st paid school teachers, but we have no problem electing Kristi Noem.

Btw, where did you come to believe that Wall St is responsible for economic growth and employment? Why do you think we are doing poorly? is there a reason for long term economic growth in real terms and how would we know what an equilibrium economy looks like when we have been overstimulating it every year since 1981 except for one?

How dare I express an interest in my state's disaster of a governing system? Time for me to be snarky: How dare you, an out of stater, tell me I can't have vocal opinions on the state I live in?

As my boy John Prine sings, your flag lapel won't get you into heaven anymore.

  16. Justin 2012.08.05

By the way, being smart, being educated and being knowledgeable are all different things.

Somebody who has never read a book could be smarter than Stephen Hawking, but it wouldn't be worth much.

  17. Ed Randazzo 2012.08.05

Take heart, Joseph. Now you have been chastised by one of the lib minions who are the judges of what is smart, intelligent, erudite, snarky, appropriate, etc. You get the picture. You didn't seem to grasp the message that they are smarter than all of us humans. It must be a burden for them to monitor, classify and teach us, the unwashed, all the things we don't know or properly understand. Aren't we so lucky to have them. (For the elites only: This is intended to enrage you and set off multiple salvos of judgment and condescending remarks, even name-calling, to vilify Christians and conservatives. Bring it.......you will be sooooo liberated.)

  18. caheidelberger Post author | 2012.08.05

Stace, Scott definitely has fire in the belly... and good tires!

  19. larry kurtz 2012.08.05

Ed doesn't allow criticism at Fascism Today so he comes here to use profanity: the word, 'christian' oozes off the screen like blood from a boy's rectum.

  20. Nick Abraham 2012.08.05

proud to be supplying tires to all the above mentioned candidates.

  21. caheidelberger Post author | 2012.08.05

"When the wheels come off your campaign, call the F&M!" Good work, Nick! :-)

  22. Justin 2012.08.05

Did anybody ever read Ed's article on why people shouldn't go to college?

  23. Barry Smith 2012.08.05

Justin I also find Rep. Nelson sometimes annoying because of his seemingly self aggrandizing statements and focus on what I think many times are mundane matters of etiquette. However if his audience is his neighbors and constituents, the polls show that they find him both interesting and relevant. While I don't often agree with his stand on issues, I do admire his willingness to stand up for what he believes. Ninty perecent of life is showing up and Stace definitely shows up. He is a born leader and folks recognize that. Maybe a little taming of the impulses would make him a great leader, but it is difficult for me to know about such things with my ninth grade edukaytion. :-) sorry about the snark- I just couldn't tame the impulse.

  24. Joseph G Thompson 2012.08.05

    Justin,

Born in Madison,South Dakota, live in Madison, South Dakota, post from Madison, South Dakota, and will die in Madison, South Dakota.

Told you in the post, just before my snarky statements that I didn't believe them myself, go back and re read.

I went back and re read my post. I realize I am not smart, but I can't find anywhere where I am waving a flag.

I thought the term boy was inappropriate, especially when used to imply ownership, IE "my boy".

Since you worked on Wall Street, could my humble self ask you to explain to me what caused and continues to cause our economy, nationwide not South Dakota's, to be in a tank?

    Are you a Republican?

  25. Eve Fisher 2012.08.05

Ideally, a liberal arts education teaches the scholar to read carefully, to analyze sources and arguments, to discriminate between propaganda and facts, to understand how logic is used and misused, and to be able to argue rationally, without allowing prejudices or personal bias to stand in the way of determining the truth, which is the whole goal of education.

  26. Joseph G Thompson 2012.08.05

agree whole heartedly with you Eve.

  27. Justin 2012.08.05

No I'm not a Republican. I'm sorry I confused you with somebody else, I thought on the abortion thread you were the one who said you didn't live in SD and weren't aware we have voted twice against an abortion ban.

I'm sure white folk singer John Prine won't take offense at calling him my boy.

No, I can't explain the economy to you in a blog post. It requires a lot of work on your behalf if you are interested. If you aren't interested, just listen to Hannity and Limbaugh, neither of whom went to college. I will recommend the Economist and the works of Samwick and Krugman and an introductory course in statistics to be able to understand how to read them.

  28. Justin 2012.08.05

Well said Eve. The point of an education is to teach you how to think and challenge yours and others beliefs and arguments. A far cry from the chain of command taught in the military.

Unfortunately, these thinkers often don't believe in God and gay bashing, so the GOP in Texas has made it part of their platform that they oppose "critical thinking skills". That is, they explain, teaching that challenges existing beliefs or parental authority. I don't know about you but I'm glad I'm not still stuck on my Kindergarten intellect.

  29. Joseph G Thompson 2012.08.05

    Justin,
I bow to your superior mind and your abilities to analyze sources and information. Now I leave what constitutes a discussion with a superior mind and will take my kindergarten mind for a peaceful walk around Lake Herman. Thank you I have learned so much.

  30. Justin 2012.08.05

Did I say you have a kindergarten mind? I said that is what the GOP educational goals are.

    Straw man much?

Evidently the reading comprehension didn't set in.

  31. Stace Nelson 2012.08.05

@Justin Sorry my 5 years of college education, gained the hard way, doesn't impress you. I met plenty educated dumbasses in my life, put many in prison, and set more store on experience & competence than a piece of paper that validated what was already proven through decades of work experience. My failure to follow through with the one course I needed for your sacred lamb skin was as much a fact I was in Asia with limited opportunities while working as much anything. Some of us have actual worldly accomplishments and healthy egos that we don’t need to cling to our HS diploma or a college degree. I would have to question your own college education of thinking you can quantify the worth of someone through your own paltry knowledge of who they are and what their actual educational experiences have been. Suffice it to say I am equally unimpressed with your lack of conviction or courage to identify your own self while attacking those who are clearly your betters. I guess that is where my alma mater trumps your domesticated collegiate experience. Snipe and whine from the shadows all you will, the Marines are renown for turning out men of character. Your haranguing herein highlights the very lack of yours. Now scurry off and find something that will solace your little man ego.

  32. Justin 2012.08.05

    Good for you.

My point was that if you had something interesting to say you wouldn't have gloated about the flag being "backwards" because it didn't appear the same way it does on military uniforms.

You ran for public office so you are open to criticism, I'm sorry you didn't realized that.

There is a reason I don't use my name and it is the same reason Dougal outlined recently. It would be impossible to do business in this state with all the underhanded people in the GOP.

When I decide to run for office and make a big stink, you can apply your criticisms of me to my full name.

  33. Justin 2012.08.05

I will say this, though: I greatly appreciate your voice and support of education on HB1234.

  34. Stace Nelson 2012.08.05

@Justin Why is it people like you think it is only you that has the right to freedom of speech? You don't like my little effort to make small talk on a blog post that was going no where? Don't read it. Your repeated comments about the military, and me, shows your ignorance. Do yourself a favor and move on to something you may have a clue about. Hint, the issue of the flag you are attacking is rooted in US Code. Maybe if you had a better education you might know that.

“You ran for public office so you are open to criticism, I’m sorry you didn’t realized that.” Ohhh, I “realized that” there are plenty people in the world who think that because I answered the call to serve my community that people like YOU think that I have to put up with every petty little attack from every idiot with an opinion about the way I comb my hair. First thing you need to learn, I am not some sniveling politician who has political aspirations. You having something pertinent about an issue the legislature has to deal with, give me what you got. You want to make a petty personal attack, stand by for return fire.

Any idiot can get an education; however, it takes strength of character to be willing to fight for what you believe in. Please spare the good people of South Dakota from your aspirations. Last thing this state or country needs is more people in office without the courage to stand up for the people they represent, on principles.

  35. Justin 2012.08.05

I'm sorry you believe the first amendment gives you the right to say what you want without criticism.

    It does not.

You have every right to strike back at me, and you are exercising it.

  36. grudznick 2012.08.05

Mr. Nelson, I don't know about your comment about "people like him" but I had a similar flag argument with young Mr. Justin a while back and he really pitched a fit. I just tried to be a bigger man, and he showed he was a swell fellow too.

  37. Justin 2012.08.05

I don't recall any flag argument with you Ed, could you source that?

  38. caheidelberger Post author | 2012.08.05

"blog post that was going nowhere"? Hey, I resemble that remark... but I can't resist the urge to say that you've gotten my blog post and the Heinemann campaign mixed up. ;-)

  39. Justin 2012.08.05

Yes, this clearly has nothing to do with Heinemann.

But we can look back to the "side note" in the first comment to trace the trajectory of this conversation.

  40. Joseph G Thompson 2012.08.05

    Justin,
Was not going to post again but you did make some assumptions and asked me a question. I do try to answer any question put to me here on Cori's blog. No I am not a strawman, I am my own man, who has his own views, many on the left and many on the right. Just interested in finding the truth, whatever it is.

Never said you said I had a kindergarten mind. You made the assumption. Speaking of assumptions, you must know that singer pretty well to know that he would not object to being called a boy. Most men I know, of any race would, would not take kindly to being called a boy. Last person to call me a boy was my grandpa and he stopped the day I left for Viet Nam.
Would say more but everytime I go back and re-read these posts I have many more questons for you. Mr Nelson answered you the way I should have but he was in the USMC and I was in the USAF and they teach Marines to be a little more direct in their responses.

For a highly educated boy(assume you won't be offended)you seem to make a lot of assumptions.

Let this be a lesson, I could have called Mr Nelson a "jarhead" and assumed he would not take offense or I can call him a United States Marine and know he will not take offense. If you don't understand the lesson I can't even send you to a book, cause even sending the book wouldn't help you understand.

  41. grudznick 2012.08.05

My name is Nick (actually it's Al but I go by my middle name of Nick), Mr. Justin.

However, young sir, you are correct in that it was a Mr. Carter that I was educating about flag etiquette, not your self. I apologize for mistaking you for Mr. Carter, but all you young fellows ignorant about flag etiquette look the same to me.

***My name is not Ed, but I am a nationally syndicated author, and will soon be the host of a daily blog cast TV show that will jam my god down your throats, by golly, and you will like it.**

  42. Justin 2012.08.05

    Joe,

I'm not really concerned about how you wish to be addressed. And I don't feel unpatriotic because I didn't read the book telling what etiquette you prefer to be addressed with. And I don't care that you called me a boy since you called me highly educated. And I didn't assume you had a kindergarten mind, that indeed was a straw man you must have heard as a voice in your head.

Nick, I'm sorry I referred to you as Ed I see he has his name here now. You can see the confusion since you use the same tagline about being a nationally syndicated author.

  43. Justin 2012.08.05

I wish for you to call me the King of Siam.

Failure to abide by my wishes will be interpreted as hatred for America.

  44. grudznick 2012.08.05

King of Siam, I can understand your confusion regarding Ed and me.

  45. Justin 2012.08.05

    Thanks for accepting my apology.

I will enjoy Getting to Know You.

  46. Stace Nelson 2012.08.06

@Grudz one thing you learn early on as a cop is that it is a waste of time debating/discussing things with drunks. It can be highly entertaining though!

In this case, young Justin is drunk on the ability to post ignorance without affiliating his identity to his comments. He is now in the same group as Larry, and dust devils.

Mr "H," who would have thought a gratuitious shout out to Scott Parsley, and a boring recite of an old broken down Marine's pleasure of correcting the errant display of our national ensign, would incite such heated ignorant condemnation?

  47. Eve Fisher 2012.08.06

I will add, that a liberal arts education also, ideally, will train the scholar in self-control, integrity and courtesy. Name calling and self-aggrandizement have no place in a scholar's arsenal, and only show the weakness of one's argument. If truth, reason, and courtesy do not "win the day", then a true scholar either (1) continues to reason with courtesy or (2) leaves the field with honor.

  48. Bill Fleming 2012.08.06

I'm interested to know what Stace's specific objection was. Mr. Nelson, given this (linked) set of guidelines, can you please point to the mistake SDPB was making vis a vis their flag display? Thanks.

    http://www.ushistory.org/betsy/more/displayonly.htm

  49. Stace Nelson 2012.08.06

Sorry Mr. "H." Don't mean to keep your post off track.

  50. Jay BK Slater 2012.08.06

The only candidates I saw in Straw Bale Days Parade were Scott Parsley and Russell Olson. Mr Parsley was also the only candidate I saw in Oldham parade aside from Dick Werner. Honor, tradition and respect might be something to consider when addressing education. If people do not care enough to right a wrong with our nation's emblem then perhaps the essence of patriotism is dead and we are working in a void when we speak of taking care of our country. I suspect that Stace Nelson may only have a HS diploma but he has a Masters in life. As far as economics and texts perhaps Justin can explain why the current group of Chinese economist are so well versed in Adam Smith's Wealth of a Nation while holding the majority of US debt?

  51. Justin 2012.08.06

" As far as economics and texts perhaps Justin can explain why the current group of Chinese economist are so well versed in Adam Smith’s Wealth of a Nation while holding the majority of US debt?"

Huh? Why don't you give me a link to what you are trying to parrot?

  52. Justin 2012.08.06

"I will add, that a liberal arts education also, ideally, will train the scholar in self-control, integrity and courtesy. Name calling and self-aggrandizement have no place in a scholar’s arsenal, and only show the weakness of one’s argument. If truth, reason, and courtesy do not “win the day”, then a true scholar either (1) continues to reason with courtesy or (2) leaves the field with honor."

If you are referring to me, I'd like to see where I called anybody a name. I've got plenty of examples of the people attacking me here calling me names.

If you have a liberal arts education, somehow the reading comprehension aspect of it didn't stick.

  53. Justin 2012.08.06

I see "idiot" "dumbasses", people lying about having conversations with me in the past.

Which of these people is a publicly elected official? (Hint hint, it's the guy doing all the name calling)

  54. Jay BK Slater 2012.08.06

Not parroting as my education was not based solely on rote. You are more educated than I so do your own research and you might continue to learn, like me, without my bias. Just for sake of further discussion, what is your perspective on US servicemembers education and opportunity?

  55. Justin 2012.08.06

I have a degree in economics, so if you are able to make a cogent argument I'm happy to discuss it with you.

Whether or not you learned from rote, citing sources is a hallmark of an academic argument.

So is having a point, and I can't tell what yours is. I guess I'm supposed to be impressed that you read Wealth of Nations despite showing no comprehension thereof in your post?

  56. Stace Nelson 2012.08.06

@Justin greatly amusing to see you lecture someone about reading comprehension. Pray tell, who was the specific person called an idiot or a dumbass? Exactly. Just because you self employed someone's descriptive words, does not mean they are to blame for your Freudian adoption of them.

  57. Stace Nelson 2012.08.06

@Joe Thompson You, Sir, are welcome to call me "Jarhead" anytime you chose, as it will be taken in the brotherly fashion that is acceptable!

  58. Bill Fleming 2012.08.06

...but not numbnuts, right Stace? LOL

  59. Stace Nelson 2012.08.06

@King of Siam Exactly my point. I am not afraid to call a spade a spade. You so far have proven yourself to be only mildly entertaining, more so now that you are whining about your own adoption of "idiot" & "dumbass" as your personal descriptors. Your pre-emptive effort to embrace victim status not withstanding, you are not even a mild irritation worthy of such condemnation as the RCJ post.

  60. Justin 2012.08.06

If I'm not worth it, why do you continue the childish tantrum?

I think you need medication. Perhaps this is one of those complicated medical things that only the VA can understand.

  61. Stace Nelson 2012.08.06

@Bill Marines have a comical way of using such outlandish descriptors in an endearing fashion and as intentional slights. Often times, the only way you know which the offered one is, is from he tone of voice and the look in the eye.

  62. Stace Nelson 2012.08.06

Now, now Justin. Don't pout, it is unbecoming of a great edyumacated brilliant mind.

  63. Justin 2012.08.06

    An interesting rhetorical device.

Let me try: Now now Stace, no need to cry.

Does this second grade banter reflect the way you conduct yourself in Pierre? (That's a rhetorical question for anybody that knows your history)

  64. Stace Nelson 2012.08.06

@Justin At this point, I have to say, I do agree with both of your self adopted descriptors that you latched onto above. With that last retort, I will leave you to go eat your pudding cups and your Elmers glue.

  65. Stace Nelson 2012.08.06

@Bill and yes, since I was drug back into Kindergarten, I meant I was going to go eat his pudding cup and glue. :-D

  66. Bill Fleming 2012.08.06

I always try to use "pudknocker" whenever I can with good friends, Stace. Don't you? Funnier than hell...

  67. Stace Nelson 2012.08.06

@Bill I confess, that one is Greek to me.

  68. Bill Fleming 2012.08.06

The really good one though, Stace, is when you tell somebody you're gonna eat them alive. Especially when you kind of growl it out of the side of your mouth in a kind of low, menacing whisper. Sooooo funny.

  69. Justin 2012.08.06

Oh come on, we had a good conversation going. I was hoping you were going to detail what really happened when the Speaker accused you of threatening to kill somebody. That sounds like it must have a good back story.

  70. Stace Nelson 2012.08.06

@Bill When have you ever known me to whisper? No, that one was spoken at full disgusted, fed-up, irritated vocal level with the additional portions of the conversation that indicated it was in the context of floor debates. No more time for Kindergarten fun time, off to eat a pudding cup alive.

  71. Bill Fleming 2012.08.06

    Later Stace. Take care.

  72. Bill Fleming 2012.08.06

    From urban dictionary:

    1. pudknocker 107 up, 15 down
A person (usually male) who is pretentious and arrogant, but lacks any real skill or ability. Most often used by military pilots.
Around here, we got two kinds of pilots: the hotdogs who get all the hot planes, and then you got your pudknockers who dream of flying the hot planes. So, what are you two pudknockers gonna have?

@Justin Actually, the little fella never claimed that to me. They found a couple news reporters that they could sell that BS to. He also then got a gullible reporter to post that he had a meeting in his office in which I supposedly yelled at him, which he later confirmed never happened. The whole HP tail they supposedly put on me, never happened according to the governor's office.

    Anything else?

So who were "they"? I believe you, just wonder who was involved in such a crazy scheme so I never vote for them.

From my understanding, Lust, Gosch, & Rausch. Somehow, through the veil of ignorance that is my uneducated pretentious and arrogant self, I stumbled happenschance into getting the truth out to the public and getting through a primary in a 75% new district.

Jay, no Roy in Carthage? Huh -- Roy and Scott have been hitting events together. I appear to have mispoken! Did Heinemann get there in time to shake your hand?
