Romney Continues Lying about Welfare Work Requirements in Face of Fact-checkers

If you check my previous post, you'll see a screen cap of Dakota War College's latest post, a rebroadcast of Mitt Romney's new negative ad lying about President Obama's record on welfare work requirements. In that screen cap, you'll see three comments from me submitted last night to rebut the Romney ad:

Pants on fire. President Obama has not ended the work requirement. http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2012/aug/07/mitt-romney/mitt-romney-says-barack-obamas-plan-abandons-tenet/

Romney's charge is "simply not true": http://factcheck.org/2012/08/does-obamas-plan-gut-welfare-reform/

...and of course, when Mitt Romney was governor, he asked the feds for just the sort of "increased waiver authority" President Obama has offered states to make their welfare programs in getting people back to work. http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-503544_162-57496253-503544/romney-hits-obama-on-welfare-again

I submitted these three comments separately because, as commenters here know, submitting more than one link in a comment often causes the comment to catch in the spam filter.

DWC accepted all three comments last night. This morning, as the screen cap shows the second and third have been dragged back into "moderation."

Pat Powers can apparently only handle one-third of the truth. But that's still a third more than Mitt Romney can handle. Team Romney itself releases ads that get the President's record on welfare "absolutely wrong," the President says so, the fact-checkers say so, and Team Romney issues the same lie over again. Ugh.

And Romney wants to return to slavery? When are you political activists in both parties going to undersand that this is all made up theatre that is designed to keep the people confused and distracted from the truth.

  2. Justin 2012.08.21

So Cory can't expose a lie in a focused media campaign because of a comment made by the VP in a campaign speech?

  3. larry kurtz 2012.08.21

"Both parties," Stevie? What about all the other parties like your Constitutional Party?

  4. Dougal 2012.08.21

Governor Etch a Sketch refuses to clarify his positions on meaningful issues other than the most vague generalities, so, of course, he has to run a campaign that makes up bulls&%t. And enough goofballs in the GOP base are dumb enough to repeat the lies again and again. It's a short term tactic that is meaningless in the long run. It does expose Romney as empty-headed and clueless.

Wow, a political ad that streches the truth--that's news.

The fact remains is that Obama (again) unilaterally changed the law without having to bother with Congress changing the law. From ignoring the War Power Act, to refusing to enforce DOMA, to assassinating US citizens in violation of the Constitution, this president has Nixon rolling over in his grave with envy.

    These are ALL impeachable offenses.

  6. Julie Gross (NE) 2012.08.21

oh...I'm not advocating impeachment of Barry Obama.

I'm sure we can agree that President Joe Biden scares the hell out of us all.

According to the Sibsonoids, President Obama is the only Christian left in a major party race for the office: otherwise Mormons and the Whore of Babylon are well represented.

Romney is in a bind. He doesn't want to talk about Bain. He doesn't want to talk about his record as Governor of Massachusetts. He doesn't want to talk about his taxes. He doesn't talk about the Olympics much lest he open the door to the federal handouts and sweetheart deals he used. Given his etch-a-sketch strategy, he doesn't want to talk about issues and invite discussion of his flip-flop past.

He has no choice but to go negative and facts be damned...so at least he's a consistent Republican.

Take a look at Politifact's list of Pants-on-Fire lies and you'll see which party doesn't just lie, they have turned it into an art form. Kind of like there is no budget crisis...where did we hear that one?

    http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/rulings/pants-fire/

And for those that love the art of the false equivalencies, there are Pants-on-Fire lies from the Democrats as well...but you can judge for yourself based on pure volume.

DB said: "...Obama has yet to run a campaign on accomplishments."

So I showed him he was wrong and now he wants to change the rules...typical.

DB, yes Obama is running ads that are critical of Mitt Romney, his past business dealings and the impact of his policies. Sorry you see those as negative.

  10. DB 2012.08.21

Jana....and they are proven lies. One ad doesn't make a campaign. You didn't prove jack ---....typical. When you want to call one party out for lies, make sure you do it to them all otherwise you are just another partisan hack. Obama has done nothing for jobs, unemployment, or our economy. Just look at what he has done as far as campaign promises go.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NJFgWA8odBM&feature=player_embedded

  11. Jana 2012.08.21

Seriously Doug...Bill Whittle. Try this on for size in terms of campaign promises kept.

    http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/promises/obameter/

And here's the GOP promises kept.

    http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/promises/gop-pledge-o-meter/

Why don't you tell us who does a better job of keeping promises and pledges. DB? DB?

By the way, your statement: "Obama has done nothing for jobs, unemployment, or our economy." is ripe for fact checking. I'll let you back it up with facts though....otherwise I'd be happy to help you out.

I'd go down that road, Julie, if that were the argument Romney were making. But he's not claiming that issuing waivers is an impeachable violation of law. He wanted those waivers when he was governor. Romney is saying that President Obama gutted the work requirement, which he has not. Romney is, thus, lying.

  13. caheidelberger Post author | 2012.08.21

So, for those of you keeping score at home, DB has not disproven a single thing I said in the original post. Romney is lying.

Former GOP Congressman, Joe Scarborough had this to say this morning:

"I've been looking for a week-and-a-half to try to figure out the basis of this welfare reform ad," Scarborough said. "I've scoured the Wall Street Journal editorial pages … the ad's completely false. It's just completely false."

Years ago there was a song by Gogi Grant that seem ripe for parody with Mitt in it.

"The more I see him, the more I loathe him
Can you imagine how much I loathe him?

The loathing grows and grows. As the campaign goes
by, Mitt is the truly detestable one."

Bill Fleming can do it better...obviously
