Lake Andes Motel Says “Vote American, Don’t Renig”; Owners Say Not Racist

Last updated on 2013.11.08

Lake Andes moteliers Larry and Mary Snyder keep their political views classy:

Circle H Motel displays sign telling voters "Don't Renig" -- Lake Andes, South Dakota

"Build This Obama—$16 Trillion—Don't Renig."

The other side of the Circle H Motel sign is doubly provocative:

Circle H Motel Vote American Don't Renig

"Vote American, Don't Renig."

Mary Snyder swears to the Mitchell Daily Republic that she and her husband are just misspellers, not racists. She says she'll change the spelling to renege. That might work on the former side, but consider how the latter side would read, if renege really is the word the Snyders intended:

  • Vote American.
  • Don't Renege.

Two statements, both in the imperative, both directed toward the readers of the sign. The first exhorts voters to act on the birther racism that says only white folks are real Americans. The second tells voters not to... what? If the intended word were renege, then what promise or contract are the Snyders telling voters not to go back on? That's too vague to make sense. The sign makes sense only in the original spelling, the message the Snyders meant to send: "Don't rehire a NIG---."

Larry and Mary Snyder invite your questions and comments on the Circle H Motel Facebook page.

Update October 6, 2012: Gee, the Circle H Motel Facebook link doesn't work any more. I wonder why....

"The sign makes sense only in the original spelling, the message the Snyders meant to send: "Don't rehire a NIG---."

Racism is on your sleeve too, Cory. It takes one to know one.

  2. Nick Nemec 2012.10.05

Come on Steve, you of all people should condemn this kind of overt racism. It just makes your side look bad and shifts the argument from policy to "look at how stupid those conservatives are". Your accusation, "it takes one to know one", that Cory is a racist rises to the third grade level of debate rhetoric and is false to boot. It doesn't take a racist to know racism when it raises its ugly head.

  3. Matt Groce 2012.10.05

Yes Steve, because only a racist can identify racist comments.

Wait that means you're a racist! Oh no, if I can tell that you're a racist then that means that I'm... oh no! AHHHHH!

  4. Jana 2012.10.05

A misspelling? That seems a little far fetched considering the widespread use of the racist term renig. Google 'renig' and you will see that Larry and Mary Snyder join a whole host of knuckle draggers that find humor in this racist statement.

Seems strange for someone in the hospitality business...especially in the internet age where something like this could hit the many travel blogs and hotel/motel review sites.

  5. Bill Fleming 2012.10.05

    Not funny.

  6. Jerry 2012.10.05

The place is a dump in the first place, only the cockroaches are happy there. Lake Andes is in Indian Country so you can just imagine what these two bozo's think of the folks that they live around. I guess when your place smells like fish guts, you tend to make disparaging remarks about others, whew that smell, that awful smell.

  7. Barry Smith 2012.10.05

Heck of an excuse huh! We're not racists we're just dumbasses.

Jana maybe they are marketing to all that "wink and nod" racism that permeates our society. Has anyone checked to see if this couple was spotted down at USD last week?

  8. Rorschach 2012.10.05

They didn't misspell anything. They said exactly what they meant to say. They think they're pretty clever & they know there are people just like them snickering right along with them. They just aren't wearing white hoods & robes these days.

  9. larry kurtz 2012.10.05

Our voyeurism is showing: it's like staring at a bloody accident or at a disabled person squatting along the roadway after having soiled himself. We should be ashamed of ourselves.

  10. Steve Sibson 2012.10.05

    Nick,

The Cultural Marxist set up the idea that whites hate colors, so you guys are just as much a racist as anyone. It does not matter to me what color your skin is. The point that matters is that Obama is a Marxist (economic and cultural) and Romney is a corporate socialist. Neither one cuts the grade for president in a free country.

"you of all people should condemn this kind of overt racism"

Then condemn Cultural Marxism Nick. Democrats should condemn class warfare, gender warfare, race warfar, and sexual warfare.

You will never see me put that sign on my property, so don't anybody claim that I support racism. I am just fair enough to say that whites are also victims of racism. We can't just walk down every street in America today, so whose fault is that? Herbert Marcuse:

"Liberating tolerance, then, would mean intolerance against movements from the Right and toleration of movements from the Left."

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herbert_Marcuse

So you folks on the left can get away with hating whites, males, and Christians. Hypocrits you all are!!!

  11. Steve Sibson 2012.10.05

So Fleming, is Marcuse one of your gods from the 60s?

"Marcuse's critiques of capitalist society (especially his 1955 synthesis of Marx and Freud, Eros and Civilization, and his 1964 book One-Dimensional Man) resonated with the concerns of the student movement in the 1960s."

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herbert_Marcuse

  12. Bill Fleming 2012.10.05

I studied Marcuse in philosophy, not religion class, Sibby. Have you read him?

  13. Jana 2012.10.05

Here's another example that shows the influence of racism in the Republican party...have at him Larry.

Sadly, the wink and nod culture seems to be the preferred Republican stance of showing their indignation...but their silence speaks volumes as to their character. Hard to imagine out of the party of Lincoln.

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/10/04/richard-cebull-montana_n_1941243.html

HELENA, Mont. -- The chief federal judge for Montana plans to step down from the post and take a reduced caseload next year after forwarding a racist joke involving President Barack Obama.

  14. larry kurtz 2012.10.05

Judge Cebull has been relentlessly pilloried in Montana's lefty blogs but sung as a hero by the earth haters, Jana: the state is at risk for cascading into the same red state collapse as my formerly-beloved home state of South Dakota has.

  15. Steve Sibson 2012.10.05

So Jana, do you support hating whites, males and Christians?

  16. Steve Sibson 2012.10.05

    "Have you read him?"

I have a copy of Eros that I partially read. Plan on digging into more for a paper I am writing for a religion class I am taking. Perhaps I should also get a copy of One-Dimensional Man too.

  17. Steve Sibson 2012.10.05

    From Jana's link:

"Cebull asked the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in March to review his conduct after he was criticized for the email that included a joke about bestiality and Obama's mother."

    Isn't Obama's mother white?

  18. larry kurtz 2012.10.05

"So Jana, do you support hating whites, males and Christians?"

sure, if they have Rs after their names, sib.

  19. Jana 2012.10.05

Steve, I sincerely hope you know the answer to that question.

  20. John Hess 2012.10.05

A friend who is half Native American grew up in Lake Andes. She described it as racist and having many other problems. One thing about Madison: I could never imagine a sign like that here. Then again we did have that young Native American who was badly beaten and dumped in a parking lot. I heard he left town afraid of further retribution although that may not have been racist. Not much was reported on that incident.

  21. Bill Fleming 2012.10.05

Sibby, read this from the Wiki on Marcuse. Sounds a lot like you, actually:

"Leszek Kołakowski described Marcuse's views as essentially anti-Marxist, in that they ignored Marx's critique of Hegel and discarded the historical theory of class struggle entirely in favor of an inverted Freudian reading of human history where all social rules could and should be discarded to create a "New World of Happiness". Kołakowski concluded that Marcuse's ideal society "is to be ruled despotically by an enlightened group [who] have realized in themselves the unity of Logos and Eros, and thrown off the vexatious authority of logic, mathematics, and the empirical sciences."[10] His famous concept repressive desublimation refers to his argument that postwar mass culture, with its profusion of sexual provocations, serves to reinforce political repression. If people are preoccupied with unauthentic sexual stimulation, their political energy will be "desublimated"; instead of acting constructively to change the world, they remain repressed and uncritical."

  22. Steve Sibson 2012.10.05

    Bill,

Both Adorno and Marcuse argued that the culture they created was then used by the capitalist. In this case, sexual freedom was commercialized by the capitalists to sell products. So yes, we have further proof that Marxism is not the solution, whether it is used in economics or in cultural transformation.

  23. Steve Sibson 2012.10.05

"Steve, I sincerely hope you know the answer to that question."

So the racism was directed at whites Jana?

  24. Bill Fleming 2012.10.05

I don't defend Marxism, Sibby. Glad you finally noticed.

  25. Jana 2012.10.05

Sibby, please explain how "renig" is racism directed at whites. Dude, you gotta get tethered back to earth. You don't necessarily have to touch ground, but at least get back in the gravitational pull.

  26. Jana 2012.10.05

Wait a minute...Steve are you a fan of what Larry and Mary Snyder's sign says?

Just to be clear, that's the Larry and Mary Snyder who run the Circle H motel in Lake Andes...not that this would show up in a google search or anything...but hey, they wanted the attention.

Wonder how many times someone would have to link to the Mitchell paper or this story to get it to show up at the top of a google search?

  27. Owen Reitzel 2012.10.05

They have a right to say that and I have the right to not stay at their hotel and to tel my friends not to stay there either.
To say it was a misspelling is a crock. The real sad part is that there is a lot of people in this state like them.

  28. David Newquist 2012.10.05

Jane makes the point. That term is known and popular among the Obama haters.

    http://northernbeacon.blogspot.com/2012/02/sign-of-time.html

But what is more insidious is those who do not use the actual words of racism but who accuse Obama of all those stereotyped attributes that define those words. A strong clue is those who obsessively harp on aspects of his personality and way of conducting himself as not rising to their notion of "equality." Some old veterans of the racist wars are beginning to wonder if Obama's faltering performance at the first debate was because of what, during the heat of the civil rights movement, was called racial fatigue. The constant carping and scheming to deprive targeted racial groups of any claim to equality and to frustrate any attempts to assert that claim and any exercise of power is very wearing. After a while one gets tired of trying to face and argue with people like Romney or Sibson and come to think it is all wasted effort.

  29. Jana 2012.10.05

The more people like Larry and Mary Snyder of the Circle H Motel in Lake Andes, SD exercise their 1st Amendment rights, the more I want to make sure everyone can see how they choose to exercise those rights.

Just guessing that the Lake Andes Chamber of Commerce has had some stern words with them...or not.

  30. larry kurtz 2012.10.05

this exactly like having a sign that says, "no negroes allowed."

  31. Jana 2012.10.05

I might have jumped the gun there a little bit.

The Lake Andes Chamber of Commerce may not have even seen the sign...it is a big town...and haven't had the chance to weigh in on Larry and Mary Snyder's Circle H Motel's racist sign.

Wonder if the chamber will give them a wink and a nod or ask them to maybe put something else up that reflects better on their community.

  32. Steve Sibson 2012.10.05

    "I don't defend Marxism, Sibby. "

That is right, you promote it in a very subtle way...whether you know it or not.

  33. Steve Sibson 2012.10.05

"Sibby, please explain how "renig" is racism directed at whites."

I thought we were discussing the judge in Montana that you brought forward. So are you saying that is off topic now that you figured out it is about bigotry toward a white female?

  34. Steve Sibson 2012.10.05

"Steve are you a fan of what Larry and Mary Snyder's sign says?"

Jana, I have already answered that on this thread. Perhaps it is you that needs to tether.

  35. Jana 2012.10.05

Sibby, your defense of racism is telling.

You know the joke that the judge sent and if you don't look it up yourself. After you do that, get back to me and let me know if you still think the judge should remain in good standing and if there isn't a racist theme in the judges little joke.

Sibby, please tell me you have at least some semblance of decency.

  36. Bill Fleming 2012.10.05

"That is right, you promote it in a very subtle way...whether you know it or not."

Then so does the United States Constitution and the Bible Sibby.

How subtle do you want to get here, brother?

  37. Rorschach 2012.10.05

Mr. Sibson's trying awfully hard to change the subject here, without admitting the blatantly obvious racism in that sign. I'm not following him down his rabbit trails. It ought to be obvious to the regulars here that there aint no re-wiring that brain of his either, so why try?

  38. Steve Sibson 2012.10.05

"Sibby, your defense of racism is telling."

That is a false accusation. I am opposed to racism, so stop it yourself.

Your link did not provide the joke, only that it was about Obama's mother.

  39. Steve Sibson 2012.10.05

"Then so does the United States Constitution and the Bible Sibby."

Not buying that Bill. Marx came after both.

  40. Steve Sibson 2012.10.05

"Mr. Sibson's trying awfully hard to change the subject here"

The subject is racism. I am opposed to it, and so the hatred toward whites needs to stop. We all don't have those signs hanging on our properties.

  41. Les 2012.10.05

It's pretty easy to defend your stance on racism when you didn't have to; give up your seat on the bus for the little old black lady, walk with Martin Luther, stand ground with your black neighbor when the corrupt law enforcement wanted to burn them out or sit outside behind the resturant with them for lunch.

Get over to the Motel with your protest sign.

    Big talk, small walk.

  42. Bill Fleming 2012.10.05

Sibby, you need to learn the difference between racism, xenophobia, prejudice and bigotry. You're using them interchangeably but they have actually have significantly distinct meanings.

As for Marx, I didn't ask you to buy anything, just to consider that he may have been influenced by the same sources as those that define your and my philosophy. Therefore you are making a fallacious cause/effect argument, getting the cart before the horse so to speak.

  43. caheidelberger Post author | 2012.10.05

Les, "small walk"? It's a six-hour drive, and when I get there, I protest in front of a couple racists, some Native neighbors, and no one else. I can get more bang for the protest buck posting the story and a link to the motel, generating negative publicity (plus more comments on their Facebook page) that may give pause to Circle H's customers, out-of-staters looking for someplace to stay while hunting.

R, these folks are about as clever as the hunters wearing grimy t-shirts with pix of pheasants saying "I like big cocks."

Barry, submit that for the new state tagline: "We're not racist; we're just dumb!"

  44. Mark 2012.10.05

Sad. Stupid. Pathetic. Unbelievable. Embarrassment to South Dakota, the nation, and thinking partisans regardless of party affiliation.

We have a long way to go as an enlightened, civil society, don't we?

  45. grudznick 2012.10.05

Give it a rest you over sensitive clods. Don't rest there if you don't like their sign. There's a great steak joint out in the hills that has lots of similar messages. I bet the majority of people eat there and the whiners that don't they don't want there anyhow and the people eating the steak there don't want there. Just like those same people probably don't go to the frufru salad and sprout places some of you over sensitive clods probably eat at.

  46. John Hess 2012.10.05

Is Les criticizing because Cory doesn't stick his neck out? He does it constantly both in written word and attendance. We could contrast this to many opinionated posters who were somehow born without a last name.

  47. grudznick 2012.10.05

I agree that Mr. H. is opposing these heinous sign people better by having me and Mr. Sibby comment on this blog than driving all the way to that town and dancing in the street at people.

  48. Justin 2012.10.05

Sibby, can you give one example over "hatred to the whites" in SD?

Whenever anybody talks about persecution of whites and Christians, they may as well be saying that they hate everybody other than whites and Christians.

I guess I shouldn't complain and instead express myself with a sign that offends elderly bigots. I know it would be easy because Sibby and Grudz have displayed quite hypocritical "sensitivity" themselves quite frequently in this very forum.

  49. Mark 2012.10.05

Grudznick --- "Over-sensitive?" I'm shaking my head, sir.
[You'll note I called you "sir" and not a "clod."] This is about decency and respect. Period.
Now I'm going to try to enjoy my steak that I'm grilling myself. No sprouts on my salad, either.

  50. grudznick 2012.10.05

Mr. Sibby is not elderly, sir.

  51. grudznick 2012.10.05

Mr. Mark, I didn't say I agreed with the sign. I don't agree with it. I said "Give it a rest" mostly to stir the pot.

  52. Justin 2012.10.05

He is compared to me, Mr. Nick.

  53. Barry Smith 2012.10.05

Hey Grudz get your granddaughter to take some pics of the signs in front of that steakhouse in the hills. You could e-mail them to Cory and get some badly needed publicity for the place.

  54. Les 2012.10.05

Heck no John Hess. I hope Cory is not taking it personally, it's a news story and should be reported.
My comment is for all the rugged commenters on racism.

  55. Les 2012.10.05

BTW John, although Cory and I have disagreements, he works harder and stands his line as well as any blogger out there.

  56. Stan Gibilisco 2012.10.05

What sort of lunacy would cause people to put up signs like that?

  57. grudznick 2012.10.05

You wouldn't believe some of the nut jobs out there.

  58. Les 2012.10.05

And you smoke that stuff Larry?

  59. Justin 2012.10.06

    nice, larry

that kind of reads like ee cummings

I'll offer my favorite unpunctuated poem

  60. Justin 2012.10.06

"Sibby, you need to learn the difference between racism, xenophobia, prejudice and bigotry. You're using them interchangeably but they have actually have significantly distinct meanings."

Bill, as much as I think you hate me, I think that is genius.

maybe on par with William Carlos Williams

  61. Bill Fleming 2012.10.06

No worries Justin. I don't even know you yet. ;-)

  62. Bill Fleming 2012.10.06

Have you read any of Will Eno's plays?

  63. Testor15 2012.10.06

As I saw the sign messages, images of the 2004 election came to mind. This is the town where GOP operatives were chasing Native voters to keep them from voting. I do all I can to avoid Lake Andes and recommend all to do the same.

  64. Testor15 2012.10.06

    Don't forget...

(Larry, I would love to rule the moon. )

  66. caheidelberger Post author | 2012.10.06

Oh, Grudz, you and your pot. Indeed, send me pix of that Black Hills steak house to which you refer (I'll be out and about this weekend) so I can give it the spotlight and warn the sensible family tourist clientele to steer clear.

  67. Dougal 2012.10.06

This is precisely what the Koch Brothers, Donald Trump, the birthers, Rush Limbaugh and others affiliated with the GOP hate machine have sought. They can't win the election on the abilities of their candidates nor on the issues. Since Obama took office, it's only been about stoking anger and hate at that black guy in the White House. The message at the bottom of these signs is no error. It's in your face, and you can agree with a racist epithet or you can be appalled by it. But don't be surprised that the loony right would say something like this since they've been saying it all along without spelling out the last three letters of the N word they find so alluring.

  68. Carrie Ackerman-Rice 2012.10.06

Jana.."big town"....Lake Andes has 600 people. Our entire county which spans 110 miles of Missouri River bank has only between 3000 & 4000 people. Everybody has seen the sign.... I have an Obama sign in my yard...probably the only on in the county..maybe the only one in a 5 county area...we are a red state. We have alot of people who think like the owner of the Circle H motel. Sad.

  69. caheidelberger Post author | 2012.10.06

Carrie, is that sign still up at the Circle H?

  70. Jana 2012.10.06

Carrie, my family roots are from a town of less than 100, so Lake Andes is a big town!

  71. G-Man 2012.10.06

Yah, I don't find myself visiting Lake Andes anytime soon since I live out in Oregon now, but, if I were there I sure would not stay at a place that would disrespect our President and Commander-In-Chief as they clearly did. The disrespect and ignorance they have shown is not American.

  72. Taunia 2012.10.06

South Dakota racists aren't schooled in disguising their racism very well. Missouri racists have it figured out.

David Newquist points out above that there may be racial fatigue of those groups being targeted. There sure doesn't seem to be any fatigue on the other side.

In Lake Andes, I hope other businesses will put up signs/billboards that simply say, "We Welcome *Everyone*".

  73. Les 2012.10.06

A friend of ours pointed out to me that racism is a matter of ignorance. I must agree.

  74. Bill Fleming 2012.10.07

Les, let's be clear. First of all, "racism" is a belief that there is such a thing as "race" in the first place. And second — compounding on this — the further belief that some races are inately superior to other races. That's it in a nutshell.

There are plenty of ignorant people who are not racist.

And plenty of intelligent people who are.

  75. Les 2012.10.07

Flem, I don't classify intelligent as opposed to ignorant.
Ignorant has as it's basis, ignore. If we ignore the rights of another, I don't care how intel you are, it is wrong.

  76. larry kurtz 2012.10.07

the right to marry another consenting adult. the right to use cannabis. the right to die. the right to shout god hates fags: when rights offend.

  77. larry kurtz 2012.10.07

Any day now Cory is going to put up a post on the new SCOTUS term then Sibby and Les can tell us which rights we're allowed to have.

  78. Les 2012.10.07

So far I'd say most on these blogs have tolerated you quite well Kurtz.
What would you like me to add to my repertoire of Kurtz rights I should learn to like and respect?

  79. Bill Fleming 2012.10.07

    Good point, Les.

Willfully IGNORE-ant as opposed to "stupid."

    Got it.

  80. larry kurtz 2012.10.07

  81. Les 2012.10.07

Your son goes to school with your values, succumbs to peer pressure and makes racist remarks. Stupid or willful Flem?

Larry's son makes racist remarks because that's how Larry raised him. Stupid or??
Somehow we are not better just by our comments here as many wish to believe.
I repeat, racism is a matter of ignorance. I will add, it's not just on the part of the racist and take that heat as it includes me.

  82. larry kurtz 2012.10.07

Racism is just one failing, Les: a symptom of the base that elects your legislature...your people. Let them eat pink slime.

  83. Les 2012.10.07

Sibby loves you today Larry! Same symptom Lar, ignorance elects a gov that continues with the same crap expecting diff results.

  84. larry kurtz 2012.10.07

Federal gubmint or state rule, Les? Which lane are you in? Your people want control at any cost but will allow a business owner to discriminate on the basis of race.

Frankly? Brendan Johnson is vacant on these yachos' obvious violation of civil rights.

  85. Les 2012.10.07

I'm a state rule voter and disappointed in SD's peekin out from under the covers as in driver licensing 16 forms of ID mandates, health care exchanges, seat belt laws etc.

Where is your man Brendan? Doesn't he undstand he will need the first Americans to vote for Obama when he runs?

  86. Theresa 2012.10.10

I don't know these people personally, but I do know that bad spelling is rampant all over. Granted, that is an unfortunate misspelling, but on the other hand it seems that anything against Obama is automatically racist.

  87. caheidelberger Post author | 2012.10.10

Baloney, Theresa. This is no innocent misspelling. The "Don't Renig" slur is a far-too-popular slogan promulgated by smirking racists who think they can make their racist comments and then dodge accountability for their racism with exactly the specious line you offer.

And as I said above, the line makes no sense in context as "renege." The fact that the line is paired with "Vote American" (which offers you no misspelling excuse, and which you don't address) makes the racist intent clear. It is clearly, contextually, a call for voters not to rehire a black man.

Also rampant are people who lie through their teeth. As was pointed out this wording was used on bumper stickers, shirts, etc. Noticed these "warm and friendly folk" didn't make any spelling errors on their web site. Although quite a few capitalization errors!

This is war: if can't stand the heat don't fry your eggs on the sidewalk, DumBass.

DB, you say nothing that negates the original and salient point: Larry and Mary Snyder's public racism gives South Dakota a black eye. Why can't you apologists for racism stay on point?

Cory...don't even try making me out as an apologist for racism. I see the broad strokes being painted in here so I thought I would throw in a little something from the other side to show that the extreme racists exist in both. That doesn't make it right and it sure doesn't make us all within a party alike as some are trying to say. Love the name calling Larry, stay classy.

DB, you are an apologist for racists. As I try to make the point that the Circle H Motel owners have made a public display of racism, you come here and try to distract from that indictment by pointing the idiocy of other people. You are running interference, trying to prevent folks from focusing on the sins of the specific South Dakotans discussed by citing (1) some anonymous idiot on the phone (vulgar, offensive, ignorant, but untraceable), (2) a non-racist comment about prohibiting signs, (3) a public figure saying quite correctly that Agenda 21 conspiracy theories are fruitless hogwash, (4) an old man whacking a camera with papers ("physical assault"?!), (5) an instance of vandalism without evidence of who committed it, (6) another vulgar vandal (unacceptable behavior, yes), (7) illegal sign vandalism (again, not attributed to specific vandals, and not endorsed by this Democrat), (8) a grossly out-of-context quote in which a Congressman was actually endorsing fiscal conservatism and which has no relevance to this discussion of racism, (9) some dumb punk stealing a sign (again, did we see his Democratic Party ID?), and (10) a repeat of the same vulgar idiot from (6). We call those red herrings, DB, and the only point of a red herring is to distract people from something you don't want to talk about. You evidently don't want to talk about racism aimed at the President of the United States by South Dakotans. You want us not to pay attention to those racists. You are trying to take the heat off those racists.

But let's just get clear, DB: do you agree that "Vote American, Don't Renig" is a racist statement?
