Here's good reason for Mayor Dana Boke to declare Wednesday a "Show up an Hour Late for Work" day in Spearfish: folks should all get a break to drive out and look at Bridal Veil Falls.
Usually the wispy Spearfish Canyon cascade looks like this:
This evening, after five days of heavy rain and drizzle, Bridal Veil Falls looks and sounds like this:
Spearfish Creek is raging through the whole canyon. The water is spilling over the dam four miles up from town, where the creek usually seeps down into the rocky ground and does not re-emerge until the hydro plant on the south edge of the City Park. Now muddy water is churning through the usually dry creek bad all the way to Spearfish. Awesome!
Spearfish Canyon is one of my very favorite places. My experience as a child was the dirty water at Falls Park or a green area lake. The canyon was the first time I ever saw crystal clear water in South Dakota. Somethin' magical about that place. :)
Bridal Veil?....it's a full-on "Burqa"....
Burqa—that's the clever turn of phrase of the morning! It'll take a few days to get back to that crystal clear, SDB. Lots of silt rolling down to Spearfish Valley.
The falls are beautiful and I love the laughter heard with the cascading water sounds.
Thanks Cory
Laughter: indeed, Barbara! I sensed a certain happy frisson amongst all of the visitors, including my little one. It's hard not to smile when you venture out into the forest and find something different and impressive.
Damn! I have never seen it gush like that! Holy moly!
Thanks so much Cory. It's wonderful to see.
Thanks for the video - it's beautiful! One of my favorite sights in the Hills too, but I've never seen it like this.
