Wear fatigues, and you're an intimidating eco-terrorist. But add blaze orange and tote a shotgun, and you're a respectable South Dakota candidate. Good grief! Can no one run for office in South Dakota without shooting something?

wow! shaking my head. I think they could save money by having one picture and photoshopping the people in.

  2. caheidelberger Post author | 2013.06.11

...or maybe the state should simply issue guns to every properly filed candidate.

  3. DB 2013.06.11

I'd be more worried about your own party fielding a worthy candidate before you go attacking the only Republican you probably have a chance at beating. Waste more time on the petty bullshit. I'm sure that will get the Democrats back in business in SD. Meanwhile, the democratic party continues on a path of steep decline and deterioration.

  4. caheidelberger Post author | 2013.06.11

Nice try at distraction. But hey, DB, I'll be happy to focus on serious issues when Bosworth and the GOP start talking about them. But first they have to get done posing with their guns.

  5. bwschwartz 2013.06.11

Wow, is their any politician in South Dakota that doesn't feel the need to put out a photograph of themselves holding a gun?

  6. Owen Reitzel 2013.06.11

The Democrats have a worthy candidate in Rick Weiland DB. This isn't petty bullshit just trying to wake people up to BS coming from you Republicans.
I agree with Cory-start talking about the issues then.

"Crazy with fury I will stain my rifle red while slaughtering any enemy that falls in my hands! My nostrils dilate while savoring the acrid odor of gunpowder and blood. With the deaths of my enemies I prepare my being for the sacred fight and join the triumphant proletariat with a bestial howl!”

Bree: hilarious! Gun posers are everywhere, all over the political spectrum.

Don't let DB bait you, Owen. He's into marketing. He's a master of distraction. This post says nothing about Weiland's strengths or weaknesses as a candidate. But I won't be surprised if we get a happy hunting photo on Rick's Tumblr site come autumn. Bob's cynicism is warranted.

"But I won't be surprised if we get a happy hunting photo on Rick's Tumblr site come autumn. Bob's cynicism is warranted."

I hope not on the picture Cory. I don't Rick will stoop that. He believes that South Dakota people are smarter then that.
sorry about the language. Get tired of hearing that stuff from the right. I will take your advice though

much like the President's famous shotgun picture.

  13. caheidelberger Post author | 2013.06.11

Indeed, more foolishness, Joseph. But did you notice that, unlike Rounds, President Obama shoots lefty?

  14. Rick 2013.06.11

Shooting? Is that a hairbrush in her hand and is she brushing the kid's hair? Obviously, she's handering to hunters and hair stylists in one photo. Well played, Annette. Well played!

  15. Lee Schoenbeck 2013.06.11

for the record, some of us owned shotguns before we were ever cnadidates, when we weren't candidates, and when we were. I'm not defending this hair-brushing hunt photo, but there are a lot of folks in this state that have a healthy view of the outdoors, aquired with a shotgun in hand.

  16. Rorschach 2013.06.11

It looks like she was preparing the youngster for the photo they were going to take. The one with her looking at the camera. But somebody snapped the photo early.

I spent many fall days tramping through tall grass and corn as a kid with my dad. But not when I was 4. A 4 year old doesn't have the stamina to do that, which (besides the hairbrush) is how you can tell this is a staged shot. Tip for candidates: make your hunting photos look real. The best way to do that is to actually hunt.

  17. MC 2013.06.11

This is South Dakota. We carry guns, big guns. We shoot things, things that move, things that don't move (stop signs) .

Hunting is a sport (there are a few who hunt for food) A sport that requires a very specific set of of skills, some of those skill can be useful in other areas of life. Candidates may want to show they are like us. they hunt, they pass down the tradition of hunting to the next generation. (family values)

besides who is going to take care of them rouge stop signs?

  18. Donald Pay 2013.06.11

I don't care if someone hunts birds with the family. It's a fine activity. It's the "get yourself and outfit, and be a cowboy, too" phony marketing that's disgusting, because it's so predictable and brain dead. What's next? Annette water skiing. Annette astride a Harley. Annette posed at Mt. Rushmore. Annette on a tractor. This sort of thing is marketing, not leadership. It also sends a bad message: It's all about Annette, not about any other South Dakotan and their problems and dreams.

  19. Paula 2013.06.11

Does anyone else notice the nitpicking that goes on from some people whenever there is a female candidate? Political parties aside even, although it is mostly directed at Republican women.

There never seems to be quite the personal scrutiny with male candidates...

  20. Joan 2013.06.11

It would be interesting to know how many people in SD own guns with those that don't. I don't own one and I'm proud of it. I have a sister who doesn't own one and never has, but she doesn't want her rights taken away. Lord help me!!!

  21. Rick 2013.06.11

Paula, the proctology practiced on DWC and its affiliated negabobs, routinely misusing factual information and complete fiction, makes any introspection of Dr. Bosworth on this blog appear almost supportive. Personally, I've got no ill feelings toward Annette, other than what few positions she's articulated demonstrate a complete ignorance or arrogance of the issues. She's clearly shapeshifting herself to appear like yet another Tea Party gadfly. She may, indeed, be a moderate, but we will never know until after the primary. Her sense of entitlement and the complete void for standing up for what South Dakota needs leads me to wonder what really motivates her candidacy, other than she's mad because of her legal/professional problems. Having Bill Janklow pay her a compliment is hardly a mandate for leadership of this caliber. Everything about her feels synthetic, and yet I want to believe she's the real deal. I really want to believe.

I am genuinely intrigued by her timing and her approach to challenging a well known former Governor who really doesn't have a stellar record of achievement, and who in the GOP support her and why. Rounds has his share of detractors in the state GOP network. Janklow was not among his fans. Any kind of professional research would probably yield a litany of problems that could make sure he remains in Pierre selling whole life insurance policies to people who know any better. Dr. Bosworth popping up in the GOP garden is fascinating on different levels.

The real 900 pound gorilla (remember that word, Lincoln and Clay counties?) is still Stace Nelson. I'd pay to see that movie.

  22. Donald Pay 2013.06.11

Paula, this is not a issue of gender. I slammed Mikey's similar photo/marketing effort on the gun issue. It has to do with how you present yourself to the public. Are you a serious person dealing with issues honestly, or are you trying to manufacture a cardboard cutout image.

  23. MJL 2013.06.11

Umm, didn't Barth fire off an assault rifle in his commercial against Matt V? It is South Dakota and everyone needs to come off as a supporter for hunting.

  24. Paula 2013.06.11

I have things to do right now, but just a very few examples I will give are:

    1. Constant comments pointing out Noem's hairdos.
    2. Noem using her son Booker in her campaign TV ads (of course, Herseth does the same thing with her son too but no one gets all up in arms)
    3. I recall comments on Noem being Snow Queen.

There are many more examples, but I have to run for now. I don't ever see the same type of personal-type comments posted about men candidates being "fathers" as I do about the women being "mothers" and how it will affect their job performances.

  25. caheidelberger Post author | 2013.06.11

Paula, I criticized SHS's Zach ads as irrelevant fluff. I make as much of an issue of Noem's hair as I do of Rounds's prominent use of an old photo for his banners that does not reflect the current reality of his head. I have posted on Noem's Snow Queen title, just as I will comment on the pageant history of any male candidate, since pageantry often suggests a certain preference for image over substance.

You are right: there are double standards toward female candidates out there. But I want to be clear that I don't do them.

  26. caheidelberger Post author | 2013.06.11

Besides, it's unfair to include Noem in the comparisons, because she really is incompetent at policy and good only at raising money to win elections... and that skill is very much tied to the image she projects. Frankly, on paper, Bosworth might be a smarter candidate than Noem, as she has a real record of professional achievement.

Bree S., if you go back to Dr. Bosworth's original Facebook post, she says "Che Guavara - You are my beacon." Che Guavara was a switch hitting, utility infielder from the Dominican Republic who never even made it to the minor leagues. His claim to fame is that he created the Grand Slam Breakfast at Denny's; he was also the driving force behind breakfast anytime. Maybe the good doctor loves breakfast? The Che Guevara you refer to was a sack of human refuse that died of lead poisoning in Bolivia.

And Cory, are you summer backsliding? How could you post that photo without an "Annie Get Your Gun" caption? That's like shooting fish in a five gallon bucket with an AK-47 on full auto.

  28. caheidelberger Post author | 2013.06.11

I could say it's too easy, ERX. I could say I like leaving some fun for you to have. But honestly, the line didn't even hit me.

But hey, I gave you seven posts today... and not one of them consisting entirely of someone else's press release! What more do you want? :-)

  29. Rorschach 2013.06.11

I haven't seen anyone mention the quarter section of farmland she raffled off to raise money for her charity (I can't remember the name of the charity). $2,000 a ticket. Limited number of tickets. I almost bought one.

That said, I have a lot of respect for Ms. Bosworth standing up for herself the way she has with the medical board, and practicing independently in a Sanford/Avera environment. But this branding effort coming from nowhere strikes me as completely synthetic. This effort to make herself into a cookie cutter tea party candidate is exactly the opposite of the image she's been building for herself as a unique doctor. And I can't help but think of Christine O'Donnell when I see her inept political machinations. Will Annette Bosworth be South Dakota's Christine O'Donnell? The "not a witch" didn't win a senate seat, but she did beat her state's former governor in the primary.

  30. Bree S. 2013.06.12

Actually she spelled it "Che Guavera." I bet he would have shot her for that. I can't even find the guy your talking about so I'm pretty sure he doesn't have his own t-shirt. But if anyone finds said t-shirt I will buy it. I like breakfast.

  31. caheidelberger Post author | 2013.06.12

R, you scare me with your reminder that ineptitude can win an election. See also Kristi Noem (though her ineptitude is on policy; she certainly knows how to politically machinate).

  32. Chris Francis 2013.06.12

I'd buy breakfast for the first SoDak candidate to be pictured riding a bicycle in our fine landscape.
