Senate Friendlier to Lewis and Clark Water Project Than House

Last updated on 2013.10.22

Rep. Kristi Noem's latest fundraising e-mail says she'll face a "certain onslaught of negative ads" for "supporting spending cuts."

Rick Weiland is a Democrat. Will he face negative ads if he supports the spending cuts proposed by the Obama Administration to the Lewis and Clark water project? Or will Weiland's Republican challenger hammer him for following in the big-spending footsteps of Senator Tim Johnson, who's trying to keep Lewis and Clark going?

Describing the Obama administration's budget request for the Lewis & Clark Regional Water System as "inadequate," U.S. Sen Tim Johnson, D-S.D., announced today (Friday) that $3.2 million in funding for the LCRWS passed the full Senate Appropriations Committee in a bill dealing with fiscal year 2014 Energy and Water Development Appropriations. Johnson added that the Senate Appropriations bill includes additional funding for rural water projects.

Johnson stated in a press release, "In addition to $3.2 million included for Lewis and Clark specifically, the (Senate) bill provides an additional $25 million that has to be used for ongoing work on congressionally-authorized rural water projects, including Lewis and Clark" [Chuck Clement, "U.S. Senate Offers Hope for Lewis & Clark Project," Madison Daily Leader, 2013.06.28].

But that's just the Democratic Senate being silly again. Kristi's GOP colleagues in the House are aiming once again to rise to the occasion of stopping big-spending legislation that South Dakotans want:

The House Appropriations Committee passed on Wednesday its FY2014 Energy and Water Development Appropriations bill. The House version includes less funding for Lewis & Clark, decreasing the amount to $3.05 million. In addition, the House bill does not provide for any additional funding for ongoing rural water projects [Clement, 2013.06.28].

Rep. Noem surely cheers that spending cut, and no one in South Dakota would run a negative ad against for supporting that bill instead of the more spendy Senate version, right?

Keloland points out how little Republicans care about promises made to the communities that have already sunk millions into the L&C Pipeline.

Of course KELOLAND didn't actually mention anyone from SD who happened to be elected to represent...you know...South Dakotans. Thune & Noem guys...go ahead and ask them why they can't lead on anything that affects South Dakota.

Farm bill? OMG...I'll get right on that says Kristi. L&C? OMG...I'll get right on that!

    Thune? "crickets"

Oh, I forgot. We didn't send them to Washington to represent or lead...just to look pretty for the folks back home!?!

Hey John and Kristi...good job on doubling student loan rates! So cool you did it when college wasn't in session to keep the buzz down.

Keep going you two! Tie bank borrowing rates to student loan rates and goodbye deficit! Wait...what?...those are your friends and donors?

OK college kids. Post a thank you note to Kristi and John on your Facebook and praise them on their courage to continue to subsidize millionaire bankers and farmers on your tax/tuition dollar!
