Gov. Daugaard Returning to China, Inviting Business Leaders to Join Him
PIERRE, S.D. – This spring Gov. Dennis Daugaard will be making his way across the globe to visit Beijing and Shanghai on his third trade mission to China as governor. Once again, Gov. Daugaard is inviting South Dakota business leaders to join him [South Dakota Governor's Office of Economic Development, press release, 2013.12.16].
So will he be taking the new owners of Northern Beef Packers with him to China? Or are they already in China, and Dennis is simply delivering the keys?
“I am looking forward to returning to China next year,” said Gov. Daugaard. “There are many opportunities for South Dakotan businesses in the Chinese market. Last spring, Millennium Recycling participated in our trade mission and by November, they had shipped more than 100 tons of scrap newspaper to a paper mill in China” [GOED, 2013.12.16].
Scrap newspaper: also the first thing Governor Daugaard wants to do every morning.
“Our office recognizes the value of exporting,” said Pat Costello, Commissioner of the Governor’s Office of Economic Development. “With 70 percent of the world’s purchasing power outside of the United States, South Dakota companies continue to benefit from exploring new markets” [GOED, 2013.12.16].
Like markets in the British Virgin Islands, Cyprus, Russia....
Companies interested in exporting to China who would like to join the Governor on the trade mission are encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to companies in the following targeted industries: value added-ag, advanced manufacturing, biosciences, professional business services and energy [GOED, 2013.12.16].

Eligible companies will be reimbursed after the trade mission for up to 30 percent of the travel, hotel and visa expenses for one company representative [GOED, 2013.12.16].
But in memory of Richard Benda, you will be reimbursed twice.
The trip is tentatively scheduled for May 6-15, but is subject to change based on the companies selected to participate [GOED, 2013.12.16].
...and on whether the primary campaign involves anything beyond Lora Hubbel talking about Agenda 21 and vaccinations.

Scrap paper is worth $111 per ton (http://www.recycle.cc/freepapr.htm) so that's $11,100 in exports. I don't know if that includes shipping.
$111 a ton? A few years ago, it cost me $300 to ship a 35-pound bicycle from Arizona. How much does it cost to haul a ton of old paper to China?
Mac and CAH, please do not question the good business practices of our Denny. He is one of our brightest here and was anointed by another great Chinese business visionary, M Rounds, known is by his Chinese nickname, egg-roll, for security purposes. That 11 grand that was sold to the Chinese, was a huge victory in sales and we now call that, compacting. We have gotten pretty darn good at that as we can take a 235 million dollar project and compact that into a 12 million dollar deal. There, see how that works. I hope so, because South Dakota tax payers cannot quite figure that one out yet. We just know that we are getting screwed, but cannot seem to find the joy in it.
note to CAH: Had you compacted the bicycle by using the Denny/Rounds technique, it would have cost you penny's to ship and you would be bragging about it.
With all these trips and entanglements to and with Communist China, perhaps it is time to start accurately referring to Daugaard, Rounds, Jackley and co. as Fellow Travelers? Should we consider that Bosworth upset the power structure with her Che Guevara pictures by revealing what their real intents are? Is there any discernable difference between "crony capitalism" as practiced in SD and "communism" as practiced in China?

Cory - you are just as bad as the Republicans when refusing to look at the WHOLE picture...look at my facebook pages...99% has to do with how horrible I feel the SD Executive office is dealing with us little guys and with government's overreaching Progressive theology. I am the type of Republican who hates others trying to control me...especially the clowns in government. I believe in self-control. Forgive me for assuming most SD Republican politicians had any....I found out differently when I was in Pierre's legislature. Most of Pierre's powerbase are self-serving with an "us four and no more" mentality who can't see the WHOLE picture.....either.
The president of China recently started to investigate corruption in high places in China. They are going the right direction. We should not go there and screw up a good thing. Or if there is a God, they might show our government the value in investigating their own problems. I mean to say that it would be a miracle.

Notice that the Homeland Security memo in that story cites an EB-5 connection to Iranian terrorism. Sen. Dan Lederman and blogger Pat Powers like banging the drum about sanctions on Iran. Why haven't they picked up on the Iran angle of the EB-5 story?

Dan Lederman, Pat Powers and the GOP are Party first...state, country people outside the clique only fit if it's convenient for the party.

Sid makes a very good point about the parallels between Chinese Communism and South Dakota crony capitalism. Given the fear a lot of South Dakota businesspeople and workers have of offending the wrong people with political statements and associations, it really is hard to tell the difference.
