Annette Who? Petition Nominates Candidate Not in Voter Registration Database

I'm sorry, you have reached a candidate who is disconnected....

Among the claims made in the challenge to Annette Bosworth's nominating petition for U.S. Senate is that no such person exists. Here is some documentary evidence.

First, review the header of the nominating petition submitted to the Secretary of State last Tuesday:

Bosworth Petition header

The signatories of this petition nominated someone who professes to be eligible for the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate. SDCL 12-6-3.2 requires that such a nominee must be a registered member of the Republican party. But check the voter registration database, and you find no such person:

Annette Bosworth no voter reg 20140401

That doesn't look like a wild leap of reasoning to me. The petition nominates a person whose name is not in the voter registration database. The petition thus cannot place anyone on the ballot.

Where is the party holding the primary on this?

  2. Jamie Scarbrough 2014.04.02

Further evidence that she is a grifter, and nothing more.

I was wondering where 909 E 11th St, Sioux Falls is. Google Maps places her living at McDonald's

  4. Anne Beal 2014.04.02

Matt McGovern made his name chage legal before running for office didn't he? It's an interesting issue which has surely come up before with other married professional women who retain their maiden names for their businesses. Hillary Clinton, however, practiced law under the name Rodham but is her legal name Ridham or Clinton? Anyway, my understanding is that it is lawful to use an alias as long as you don't use it for fraudulent purposes. Which in Boseorths case might be the point .

  5. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.04.02

Check that, TJ. I believe the scan has a blur. Other petition pages read "909 E 14th St." Close to McDonald's—my kind of neighborhood!

  6. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.04.02

An alias, on a petition? I can't register to vote under an alias. I can't present an alias at the polls and receive a ballot. Can a candidate present an alias and get on the ballot?

What name appeared on Matt McGovern's petition, and what name was in the voter registry when he circulated and ran?

  7. larry kurtz 2014.04.02

CAH and Madville just got a shout out on Bill Janklow's idea of public radio!

  8. Rorschach 2014.04.02

SD Senator & Representative Mailin Olson. Ever heard of him? He always appeared on the ballot as Mel Olson.

The SD medical board does have an active SD licensee by the name of Dr. Annette Marie Bosworth.

  9. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.04.02

I've heard of Mel Olson. I like him a lot. What was the name on his nominating petition? What was the name on the voter registry? Did they match? That's the question.

Having your name in the medical registry is not a qualification for the Republican nomination.

  10. Rorschach 2014.04.02

You have thrown a lot at the wall, Cory. Much of it should stick, but this name claim probably won't, and it shouldn't. Do you advocate harassing married or divorced women at the polls when they go to vote if their driver's license and their voter registration card have different last names - one with their maiden name and one with their husband's name? Let's not go down that road. It's sexist.

  11. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.04.02

I disagree. It's literalist, not sexist. No one is being harassed here. An individual seeking public office is being asked to observe the law. As stated above, I would take the same position on Matt McGovern's petition.

What does the law say? That's what I want to know.

  12. mike from iowa 2014.04.02

The name on your voter registration card has to match the name on your voter i.d. or you are supposed to have the right to fill out a provisional ballot, which means in some states, your vote will not be counted.

  13. Crusty 2014.04.02

Though entering "Annette Bosworth" into the on-line voter registration name search produces no match, "Annette Haber" does. With the shady Medical/Legal background of "Annette Bosworth, MD", one would think she would have been received more positively running for office under the alias of "Annette Haber". Curiouser and curiouser........

  14. mike from iowa 2014.04.02

A member of the election board must verify that the picture on the ID matches the voter.
The name on the ID must also match the name on the voter registration list.
If the election board worker cannot make this verification, the worker may consider:

  15. Nick Nemec 2014.04.02

PUC candidates are nominated at state party conventions and don't have to submit nominating petitions. I've known Matt McGovern for years and as long as I've known him he's gone by that name. At some point I was asked what name I wanted to appear on the ballot and picked "Nick Nemec" rather than my legal name and the name I registered to vote under, "Nicholas Nemec."

  16. Dave 2014.04.02

So, that pistol that "No, No N-Annette" waves in her YouTube video ... is it registered to Annette Bosworth, or Annette Haber??

Plus ... could you imagine being one of her patients? I shudder when wondering if she has the ability to properly fill out a medical chart. Code Blue!

  17. PlanningStudent 2014.04.02

Marion Rounds : Michael Rounds... Which one do you think will be on the ballot? Obviously there are two spots to enter your name, one which clearly seems to allow you to use an alias on the ballot, so the question is about the first entry. When James on the street signs the petition he can sign Jim. When you vote your name on your Driver's License doesn't have to match your registration name at all.

  18. mike from iowa 2014.04.02

S D has funny voter qualification rules. Sec 12-4-18 says if you are declared mentally incompetent or are serving time as a felon, you are removed from voter rolls. If,however, you are deceased, the county apparently has an option of removing your name or not. Your name on the voter registration form and your voter i.d. are supposed to match, however there are certain circumstances where you can get a pass.

  19. Donald Pay 2014.04.02

Cory, much as I think all this should be just a tempest in a teapot, I love to see the Republicans tripped up by their attempts to limit our democracy. Under the stupid voter laws they made, this probably should invalidate all the petitions she circulated, and prevent her from getting access to the ballot. Whether it borders on fraud, I don't know, but there should be an investigation. When Republicans start getting perp walked for voter and election fraud, maybe they will rethink their anti-constitutional efforts to limit our rights to the ballot through stupid voter ID and registration laws. Of course, the laws weren't meant to apply to them, oh, no; just to the regular folks.

  20. Rorschach 2014.04.02

Well, Dave. That pistol in Dr. Bosworth's bible video isn't registered to anyone. We don't register guns in SD. Guns are not registered with the federal government either. When the federal government does background checks it is required by law to destroy the records of any purchases almost immediately.

  21. Deb Geelsdottir 2014.04.02

It seems to me that a different first name/nickname, is not the same as last names differing.

As one whose antenna picks up sexism quickly, I do not find the matching last names requirement to be sexist. The whole expectation that she should surrender her own name while he does not - That Is Sexist.

My grandmother, born in 1900, said they ought to combine names. She was a Bishop, he was a Wade. She wanted to go with Biwade. But in 1919? Nope. It wasn't even Legal where she lived!

(Okay, done with that, but I do enjoy the occasional rant on one of my favorite topics. You're welcome. I do what I can.)

  22. Kristi 2014.04.02

I guess I don't understand how or why anyone from the Republican Party would want to support this person anyway? The only stance she's taken is on guns and God...and the second is questionable because her value system is clearly not based on Godliness. Folks, she has NOT paid her employees! What would Jesus do??

  23. Lanny V Stricherz 2014.04.02

The correct address is on E. 14th St. I know one of her neighbors in the Apartment building. Gosh, I hope that we will find out soon who wrote this novel. I have never read a mystery story as good as this and especially not knowing who wrote it.

  24. Disgusted Dakotan 2014.04.02

The only people I know of that use multiple names (Aliases)? Criminals. It appears she changes the name that she uses as often as she changes her stance on the issues and the stories she tells.

  25. larry kurtz 2014.04.02

William Jefferson Clinton was on the South Dakota ballot for multiple elections, right?

  26. larry kurtz 2014.04.02

William J. Janklow petition as Bill?

  27. grudznick 2014.04.02

You people are incredibly infatuated with that pretty young woman. Have you noticed that Mr. Rhoden is gaining on Rounds when you talk to people around your towns?

  28. larry kurtz 2014.04.02

We'd love to run against Rhoden, grud.

  29. grudznick 2014.04.02

    He's coming for you, larry.

  30. larry kurtz 2014.04.02

    He's a looker, grud...if you're up for such things....

  31. Dave 2014.04.02

Thanks, Rorschach ... my bad. I've evidently watched too many fictional cop shows on TV.....somehow got the notion there was some sort of paper or computer trail that followed every legal gun...

  32. Bree S. 2014.04.02

Grudz is serious about Rhoden? The Lord save me from asinine national interference.

  33. G-Man 2014.04.02

    This "Annette" woman is weird.

  34. Ryan Gaddy 2014.04.03

Hmmmmm. . . Saw Cory's big s--- challenge on KeloLand. . . . What is your deal man? You have obviously been planning to take her out for awhile. . . V for VENDETTA? Just a bit eh? It will all come out soon enough, who is shady, and who is a dumb---. . . Just sayin

  35. Bree S. 2014.04.03

I agree, Ryan. Your music does sound evil.

  36. Bree S. 2014.04.03

The Boz is like a tea cup poised on the edge of a table waiting for someone to flick it. Tick, tock. Tick tock. The cracks are spreading.

  37. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.04.03

Ryan, clean it up and grow it up. When you use the word "obviously", you betray a lack of evidence. What evidence or knowledge do you have of my "plans"? And why do you use the word "vendetta" other than to make an inaccurate movie/graphic novel reference?

My deal, man, is pretty clear and simple: Candidates should be honest. They should follow the law. They should not pretend to be something they aren't in order to trick people into giving them money. Do you need any more explanation than that?

  38. SDBlue 2014.04.03

I read the Kelo article on their website. They are the Fox News of South Dakota. It was nothing but "spin" and disparaging the messenger. The ignorant buffoons in the comment section make my blood boil. I applaud you, Cory! Anytime you ruffle the feathers of South Dakota conservatives, it is a good day!

  39. Crusty 2014.04.03

Good call, SDBlue, on KELO comparison to Fox Noise. If you don't watch their station, and their station only, and continuously, not only are you a bad person, but you could die.

  40. Dana P 2014.04.03

My goodness, Ryan. Of COURSE Cory wants candidates to be honest and to follow the law. I would hope that all of us would want that! I have so much confidence in Cory that if a Dem or Indy candidate was doing any of the shady things that Ms Bosworth has been doing, Cory would be doing exactly the same thing. Exposing it. Documenting it. Showing that person for what they are.

  41. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.04.03

Note also that KELO did not contact or quote me, but did give air time to direct comments from Team Bosworth. Update 2014.04.04 00:20 CDT: Error! I just discovered an e-mail dated 2014.04.02.14:15 from Brady Mallory trying to contact me for the story. My bad! I was at work, wasn't checking my e-mail, and didn't see it under the big pile of blog notices pouring in. I apologize, KELO!

  42. Bill Dithmer 2014.04.03

"One man in each century is given the power to control time . . .

The man chosen to receive this power is carefully selected . . .

He must be kind, he must be fair, he must be brave . . .

You have fulfilled these requirements, and we of the Outer Galaxies designate to you the Wisdom of Solomon and the Strength of Atlas . . .

YOU CORY ARE CAPTAIN ELEVEN, again"

I want to write the screenplay fot "THE BOS OF OZ"

    THE BLINDMAN

  43. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.04.03

Start writing, Bill! We shoot in the Badlands, adapt the story as a sequel to Starship Troopers. Include laser guns!

  44. Nick Nemec 2014.04.03

KELO's failure to contact one of the principals of the story seems, to me, to violate the rules of journalism 101.

  45. Nick Nemec 2014.04.03

"The Boz of Oz".........pay no attention to the woman behind that curtain, whippersnapper.

It sounds like the drumbeat from certain bloggers, "move along here folks nothing to see."

  46. daleb 2014.04.03

i believe someone could file a 2-1-18 court challenge to boz's sigs claiming on mar 20 and mar 23 that she offered food and drink which violates 12-26-15(8). and all witnessed signatures on those dates are invalid.

  47. charlie5150 2014.04.03

Isn't this voter fraud ID situation exactly what Republicans have been warning us about? Isn't that why we all had to go get birth certificates and marriage licenses, in order to prove identity for our official South Dakota ID's so we would be able to prove to our neighbors at poll time we jumped through the correct hoops? Do they expect less from the candidates themselves?

  48. Tim 2014.04.03

charlie, those rules only apply to democrats, the poor and people of color, any color, never apply to republicans.

  49. 108 2014.04.03

Please understand that you can't really claim that Dr. Bosworth M.D. represents the republican party, republican ideas, or republican morals just because she claims to do so... unless of course the people she claims to represent vote for her ... Just to be fair.

  50. Roger Cornelius 2014.04.03

KELO should have had one of the best political reporters in South Dakota cover the Bosworth fraud story, Kevin Woster. Kevin actually works for KELO and would have covered this story professionally.
I don't always agree with Kevin, but like Cory he is a journalist first and would have given this story the credence it deserves.
He most likely would have contacted Cory for a comment.

  51. Douglas Wiken 2014.04.03

Even more appalling than KELO's tacit attack on Cory's credibility was public radio using the same phrase yesterday. Woster made a nice comment about Cory however.

Corporate media has converted balanced news from balanced investigation to foolishly balanced presentation even if one side is lunatic, and baseless as mad coon, and the other is a researcher with a ton of facts.

Also, corporations even those claiming to be news-based keep slashing funds for reporters and investigation and some of the remaining are lazy slugs with pretty faces.
