I'm sure they are just going to be jointly reading books to pre-K children who are there for story book time. Everything doesn't have to be political.

  2. Drew 2014.04.07

Sounds like these guys are goona take it to the establishment today!! Wish I could be there!!

  3. Lynn G. 2014.04.07

This is pretty easy! lol Hopefully they both announce a united effort and full court press that goes beyond party lines which exposes many of our state's failed policies, lack of oversight, cronyism and scandals that happened during the Rounds administration who just happens to be the front runner in the US Senate Race.

  4. owen reitzel 2014.04.07

I'd ask Stace if Rounds wins the primary will Stace support Rick?

  5. advocate 2014.04.07

This is the type of nefarious activity that caused Nelson's ban from attending GOP caucus meetings -- what next? Will he let his daughter date a Democrat?

  6. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.04.07

Troy, I would love to see Rick and Stace doing some duet interp for a bunch of little kids. It would be captivating and hilarious theater. They could do Jack and the Beanstalk—imagine the little kids screaming in terror when Nelson thunders "Fee Fi Fo Fum! I smell the blood of a Democrat!"

  7. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.04.07

Lynn, sounds like a good meeting agenda to me. Democrats and Republicans have common interest in rooting out corruption, crony capitalism, and unrestrained corporate campaign finance.

  8. Shane Gerlach 2014.04.07

    1. Call for Bosworth to step aside due to her repeated shady dealings.
    2. One or the other is switching parties.
    3. One or the other is leaving race and throwing monies/support to the other crossing party lines.
    4. Calling on Rounds to step aside due to shady doings.

Those are my top 4 guesses and none of them will be correct I imagine.

  9. Bree S. 2014.04.07

    EB5.

  10. Bill Fleming 2014.04.07

Excellent! Troy, Cory, I'd like to hear a tag-team read of J.R.R. Tolkein's "Mr. Bliss."

  11. Bree S. 2014.04.07

    Tolkien was a smart man.

  12. Bree S. 2014.04.07

And now the rats begin to jump ship. The question is, which way will they jump..

  13. larry kurtz 2014.04.07

    Bendagate.

  14. Jenny 2014.04.07

SD politics is so entertaining! Can't wait for the next saga, must be EB-5. Such a page turner!

  15. Tara Volesky 2014.04.07

Now the serious candidates are coming forward and addressing the real issue...SD political corruption. All the other issues mean nothing until you deal with the corruption and cronyism. It seeps into all areas and throughout SD. Thanks for stepping forward Stace and Rick. Lora Hubbel and Mike Myers will be there to show there support. I hope other candidates also come forward.

  16. mike from iowa 2014.04.07

They are set to announce jesus was offered permanent status in both political parties and he told both parties to go to hell, wingnuts first. Dems get a second chance at redemption if they grow a backbone and some intestinal fortitude.

  17. Douglas Wiken 2014.04.07

My guess is that they will both announce they are opposed to corporate drowning of political speech and both support a constitutional amendment to change the status of corporations as having human status and speech rights.

  18. Jenny 2014.04.07

This is SUCH a nail biter. What else could it be besides corruption in SD politics? Bosworth? Nah, she's not worth it. My guess is they're going to challenge Rounds to a bunch of debates. Nelson wouldn't be dropping out would he?

  19. Steve Huff 2014.04.07

Clearly, Stace and Rick are going to announce their joint EB5/Not That Guy (Rounds) ticket. Alternatively, they will agree to a political marriage in Iowa on the Argosy with none other than George Takei performing the ceremony when he is the guest host on Saturday Night Live. I vote Door #2.

  20. larry kurtz 2014.04.07

Campaign finance limits my guess as Sen. Pressler had a lackluster Q1, too.

  21. Jenny 2014.04.07

Stace Nelson is holding a very good press conference. Go Stace! 'Bout time you guys started talking.

  22. Bill Dithmer 2014.04.07

Now this is just a guess on my part but I'm thinken the two men are going to announce that they have decided to , turn the page inthe way things used to be done in South Dakota politics. They are going to talk about a new chapter. One of meaningful, and cordial intercourse.

I've heard through the moccasin telegraph tha both men are worried about apathy that has invaded the voting population of the state. Furthermore, I've heard that to re energize the masses they are going to start several contests to help South Dakota take its rightfull place as a political power house.

For their firat contest each man will donate $250 of their own money to the first woman that can grow cornrows on their legs.

An additional $250 from each man will be given to the man with the best braided back hair.

The winners will be announced at this years Rally.

But I have been known to be wrong.

    The Blindman

  23. Lynn G. 2014.04.07

It took some courage for Stace Nelson and Rick Weiland to hold a joint news conference regarding Mike Rounds and how our campaign finance system is getting so messed up. It's affecting our elections here in South Dakota and with the latest Supreme Court ruling along with Citizens United I feel our own individual campaign donations are just getting diminished. There is no way we can compete financially against the PACS and various ways to hide campaign funding.

  24. Jenny 2014.04.07

As a progressive (if I lived in SD), it would be very tempting to register republican and vote for Stace in the primary. I think all the dems should do that.

  25. Lynn G. 2014.04.07

I'm with David Montgomery's tweet from the Argus that I do wish the joint conference was harder hitting especially from Rick Weiland regarding Rounds but maybe it's saved for later.

  26. Lynn G. 2014.04.07

Jenny that is what I plan to do but only for the primary

  27. larry kurtz 2014.04.07

It was good practice for both of them: kudos to Stace for fielding the cannabis question professionally and to Rick for keeping a straight face during what must have felt like impending public humiliation.

  28. Lynn G. 2014.04.07

Larry, Impending public humiliation? From what?

  29. Bree S. 2014.04.07

    Stupid kid.

  30. Bree S. 2014.04.07

Sigh. I wish it would have been about more corruption than out of state dollars. I felt a little bad for Rick. Nobody wanted to stay on topic and kept asking questions about whatever the heck they felt like. But at least they got the statement out and got in front of the cameras.

  31. larry kurtz 2014.04.07

Two press questions, an argument, a question from a stoner and a shameless hijacking by a third party candidate does not a press conference make. Rick planned the event knowing it could lead to the very skewering in the twitterverse taking place as this is being typed. It more more like a town hall meeting and good practice for both of them.

  32. larry kurtz 2014.04.07

Maybe try to imagine Mike Rounds and Larry Pressler in that room decrying Stace for being so damned big.

  33. Bree S. 2014.04.07

Agreed. Rounds has had a lot more time in front of the cameras.

  34. Bree S. 2014.04.07

Who will drop and give us twenty this time? Lol

  35. Lynn G. 2014.04.07

The hijacking of the press conference was very annoying. It was Rick and Stace's conference and they clearly stated what the conference was about with a limited amount of time in using that meeting room.

Mike Meyers shouldn't have used that time to promote himself getting on the ballet.

If Ryan's incomplete nonsensical comments here on Madville and hijacking the press conference represents the public face for the legalization of cannabis I'll switch from supporting it to against it. He is going to tick people off!

  36. Jenny 2014.04.07

Mike Rounds is a very wealthy man so why is he jetsetting all around the country for begging for campaign money? He owns several insurance companies all over the state, he should set the example and spend his own money.
At least Gov Dayton, who is very wealthy also, is known for spending most of his own money for campaigns AND he gave away his Senator salary to the poor when he was in Congress.

  37. mike from iowa 2014.04.07

I get it now-Ryan heard it was a "joint" conference and he supports cannabis......so....

  38. tara volesky 2014.04.07

Lynn, that is what these elections are all about, getting yourself out there. I thought it was very generous of Professor Myers to invite Stace and Rick down to his getting on the ballot party Sat. night at the American Legion in Centerville. There could be hundreds of people there and all candidates are welcome to address the crowd. Speaking of money, all donations at Mikes party will be given to the volunteer first responders and firefighters in Centerville. Cory I will have our internet tech send you the information. Just want you to know, all Democrats are invited too. Thanks

  39. Lynn G. 2014.04.07

Jenny the Dayton family is so different from Rounds. Daytons historically are unique and are well known for their generous philanthropy and public service. When I lived in the Twin Cities after Mark Dayton left the senate he and several other wealthy multi-millionaires in Minnesota paid for advertising stating how they felt our tax system was unfair and that they were not taxed enough. They were more than willing to pay more which they felt would be fair.

  40. Troy 2014.04.07

I guess I was wrong. They weren't there for the kids.

  41. Roger Cornelius 2014.04.07

    Stace.

Hopefully you will read this thread and join our conversation as you have done in the past.

I do have a suggestion for you, track Mike Rounds campaign contributions from all sources and see if any of them leads directly or indirectly from EB-5 investors of Northern Beef Packers.

  42. Winston 2014.04.07

Well, I think it is fair to say that Montgomery of the Argus Leader is working for Rounds or at least he thinks he is.

I read Montgomery's twitter comments on this press conference before I watched the entire press conference on ArgusLeader.com and given Montgomery's initial question and his bias opinionated tweets I believe it is fair to place Montgomery's journalistic agenda into question.

Although, there seemed to be somewhat of a circus atmosphere about this press conference, I have to admit (They could have used Annette's music, just kidding CAH, forgive me). Most people will not watch the entire press conference nor did they see it in person and hopefully for Weiland the headlines tomorrow will read "Weiland and Nelson challenge Rounds on a bi-partisan note concerning big money in politics" and quote Weiland's articulate comments about McCutcheon and Citizens United….. Well, hopefully as long as Montgomery does't get to write the headlines for tomorrow's paper that is…

By the way Mr. Montgomery, I am still waiting for that the article about Berez and EB5 you promised us on "100 Eye"s back in early November…. still waiting…..

  43. Roger Cornelius 2014.04.07

    Winston,

When Montgomery was at the Journal he helped Kevin Woster moderate Mt. Blogmore. At that time he constantly supported John Thune, almost to the point of an infatuation.

Montgomery also exhibited that same support and sometimes protection to Mike Rounds.

  44. Deb Geelsdottir 2014.04.07

Steve Huff, they ought to marry at the University of Okoboji. They love all sorts of weddings there. Oh, and Cory, you can get a JD there quickly. All they have to do is fire up the printer!

  45. Winston 2014.04.07

    Roger,

I hear you, I totally believe you.

You know, the whole idea often with a Twitter account is that you want to get a bunch of followers, especially when you are better known than the average Joe so you entertain your followers with witty and entertaining comments (Don't we all wish to be the next David Letterman); but when you are a professional, like a professional journalist, your tweets should be professional and to the point and informative, and not an editorial observation of late night television proportions…. Unless you are willing to admit you are not really a journalist rather an editorialist with a mere comic and philosophically political bent.

  46. Lanny V Stricherz 2014.04.07

Lynn G, That may be the case, but now he thinks that Minnesota should give a tax free ride to the NFL to entice the Super Bowl. It wasn't enough to have the taxpayers build a new playground for a billionaire in which his millionaires could play.

As far as Rounds is concerned he was one of the big moaners about the Corps of Engineers and the flooding of the flood plain in which he and others built, which incidentally will be raising the rates in the alleged flood plain in Sioux Falls, although much of it has never flooded, even during the flood 45 years ago this week, which was the largest that Sioux Falls ever had.

  47. Jenny 2014.04.07

I know what you're saying, Lanny, but one thing about Gov Dayton - he usually goes with what the majority of the public wants. Over 1200 Vikings fans rallied at his office one day for support of a new stadium last year. I don't ever remember hearing on the news of huge numbers of people protesting against the stadium (and Minnesotans are known for protesting). Dayton is a populist and will listen and make his decision on what the majority of people desire.
I agree the NFL is ALL (and I mean all) about money and Zygi should have paid far more for the stadium with his own billions, but on the other hands, the fans voluntarily pay for an overpriced ticket and refreshments to see a game.

  48. Lanny V Stricherz 2014.04.07

You miss the point, Jenny. Minnesota has a law that the State nor the County nor the City can pass that type of a funding project with out a vote of the people but as with Target Field for the Twins, that law was ignored.

  49. Jenny 2014.04.07

But anyway to get back on topic, I really think SD dems should think about registering republican to vote for Stace Nelson in the primary. I'm also disappointed that there were not any announcements from Weiland and Nelson at the press conference today on scheduling some debates with Rounds. That is what they need to do. Are there even any scheduled between them at all?

  50. Jenny 2014.04.07

    What law is that, Lanny?

  51. Jenny 2014.04.07

Oh, I remember now, Lanny. Some residents sued, and the case was dismissed I believe.

  52. Lanny V Stricherz 2014.04.07

    Legislation and funding[edit]
A state law passed in 1997 requires that when a county seeks to raise its sales tax, the question is put before the voters. The law also allows a county to seek permission from the state to enact the tax without a voters' referendum. The Minnesota Legislature did not act on the bill during the 2005 session.

On April 26, 2005, the Twins and Hennepin County announced that a deal had been reached in which the Twins would pay roughly 1/3 of the stadium's cost ($125 million), with the rest being paid for by a 0.15% Hennepin County sales tax. The deal needed approval by the Hennepin County Board. After delaying the vote one week, on May 3 the Board voted 4–3 in favor of the stadium deal. Minneapolis mayor R. T. Rybak (DFL) had already weighed in in favor of the stadium. The plan passed its second hurdle on May 9, 2005, when a House committee of the Minnesota Legislature approved a bill to get around the referendum on a 17–5 vote. This legislation languished before the full legislature, during a particularly gridlocked session, and was placed on the back burner, pending resolution of "more pressing" legislation. Naming rights belong to the Minnesota Twins.

  53. Lanny V Stricherz 2014.04.07

You see, Minnesota isn't much different than South Dakota and Democrats there aren't much different than Republicans here. Piss on the people and stick up for whoever has the bucks to grease the monkey.

  54. Lanny V Stricherz 2014.04.07

Most people are also not aware that even though Minnesota claims to be a labor friendly state, (you know DFL Democratic Farm Labor) although they abide by the Federal minimum wage law of 7.25 an hour, they also have some other wages not covered by the federal min wage law. Large employer (over 650,000 in profits a year 6.25 small employer 5.75 and training 4.90.

  55. Jenny 2014.04.07

Money always rules, but I still think the corruption is more rampant when a state capital is in the middle of nowhere, and has had one party rule for 40 years.

To compare how MN went about EB-5, the MN legislature had an EB-5 study commissioned that was made available to the general public. It was a very thorough study that went over the benefits and costs of EB-5 projects. It's actually quite and impressive study and a responsible thing to do for the public. Compare that to Rounds and company that touted a fake beef plant with EB-5 funds.

  56. Lanny V Stricherz 2014.04.07

I am not excusing our State government, I am only asking that you not excuse yours. To me, the largest problem with government in the United States is the ability to see the faults in the other political party and not see those of my party. If there is no honesty, how can there be trust?

  57. Jenny 2014.04.07

Oh, I totally agree both parties are rotten to the core. Our politicians hide behind laws that benefit them and grab money dangling for lobbyists, and I don't think it's going to change anytime soon. Sad, huh?

  58. Jenny 2014.04.07

    'from lobbyists' I meant.

  59. Deb Geelsdottir 2014.04.07

Lanny and Jenny, you know I have 2¢ to add to this.

MN has a pretty active media. Open meeting laws are clear and enforced. The political, social, cultural and economic diversity is very good. There are 2+ active and well-matched political parties

All that being said, I don't always like what the state and local governments do. The whole idea of MN tax payers paying for nearly all of a billionaire's football stadium ticks me off. So does the way Minneapolis avoided putting it to a popular vote of the citizens.

On the other hand, I'm very proud of how well MN is integrating immigrants and how hard this state is working to improve educational opportunities for minorities. I'm tickled at how MN jumped into creating an ACA site, plus facing up to, taking responsibility for, and fixing the problems that developed. I'm also excited that we've raised the minimum wage to $9.15. True, it doesn't cover everyone, but it's pretty good. The legislature has rebalanced the budget that Republican Tim Pawlenty trashed, and did so while Increasing aid to education without taking anything from the people who have the least.

MN is definitely not perfect, and I've never claimed differently. But it's pretty damn good.

  60. Ryan Gaddy 2014.04.07

So. . . I'm just a stoner. . . Why was the media asking how to spell my name today? And I didn't end up in handcuffs? Maddville. . . I'm so glad you guys are still talking shit about me lol

  61. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.04.08

Careful, Ryan: Bosworth will attack you for being vulgar. Mustn't have that.

    Seriously, keep it clean here.

  62. Ryan Gaddy 2014.04.08

Do I work for Bosworth? NOPE. . . But out of respect Cory. . . I will not say "Shit" in the future

  63. Lynn G. 2014.04.08

Hey Lanny, Sorry just coming on this morning. Minnesota has it's issues like any other state in the union. I think thought the new stadium deal stinks for the taxpayers and have friend who are lifelong Twin City residents that felt the Wilfs and Vikings organizations should of paid more or they were just prepared for the Vikes to move elsewhere. There were numerous studies at the time on the real costs vs benefits for the cities/taxpayers having these franchises.

Oh well, back to Dakota as they call it. lol
