Rick Weiland: Everywhere Man Video Rocks!

I don't care how much money you make: you will not buy a better campaign video than Rick Weiland's newest submission, a full-length music video, recorded entirely in South Dakota, with the Democratic U.S. Senate candidate himself strumming and singing. No auto-tune needed:

Original lyrics, authentic images: That's the kind of message and footage a tour of every town in the state buys you. Marvelous!

And give Rick bonus points for the metaphorical weight of pitching his merits by co-opting a song by a man named Cash.

Great video, it's the type of ad that gets the buzz an underfunded candidate needs to overcome a nine million dollar man.

  7. Jim in DC 2014.04.17

Wow! What a great spot. Void of all that glossed over makeup driven schlock that we see these big money candidates paying big money to produce. Right on Rick!

  8. Lanny V Stricherz 2014.04.17

Thanks SD Blue. That worked. I was able to make it through the first three minutes. My tears were flowing so hard------oh that's right this isn't April Fools.

  9. SDBlue 2014.04.17

Yeah Lanny, I should have prefaced my remarks by saying this is nine minutes of your life you will never get back. :)

  10. Joan Brown 2014.04.17

Great ad. It's too bad more politicians aren't creative. I'm already tired of Mike Rounds family picture and hearing how long he has been married. I found this ad last night and listened to it and just now went back and found it so I could play it for my adult mentally handicapped daughter. She was familiar with the song, but thought it was funny when she recognized the names of towns, like one of her grandmas lived in Avon, etc. When the song got done she said" somebody else sings that song," and I told her it was Johnny Cash. When I was young and single there were times when some of us would be cruising in Madison and that song would come on the car radio, we would be trying to sing along with it, but we weren't fast enough.

  11. Jenny 2014.04.17

Rick Weiland's ad totally rocks! One of the best political ads I've seen in a long time.

  12. Charlie Johnson 2014.04.17

"Everywhere Man" seeking out everybody!! I have known Rick since we shared the same dugout in Little League baseball. This is the real deal, folks!!

  13. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.04.17

Bill Dithmer, did you write those lyrics for Weiland? They sound like your work!

  14. Lanny V Stricherz 2014.04.17

Hey Cory and Bill, Great idea. If he didn't he definitely should pen one out for Rick's next one.

  15. Bill Dithmer 2014.04.17

I didn't have anything to do with the success of Rick s video.

One of the things you learn in medical school is that when a nurse gives a patient the wrong medication, and it kills them, its on you.

No, wait, I might have heard that some place else this morning.

    The Blindman

  16. Hubba 2014.04.17

how 'bout that dude on the G&L playing fills behind him? That tone is so good I might vote Democrat! Who is that guy?

  17. Dave Baumeister 2014.04.17

This was great work. Amazing job, Rick!

  18. Stace Nelson 2014.04.17

I'm a sucker for Johnny Cash. The first musician I can remember liking was him. I will wager none of those pictures are from France.. :-D

By the looks of it, Rick has all the candidates beat on musical talent. If anything, I'm a sentimental old broken down Marine, I like the incorporation of all the SD towns. Best part of campaigning is getting to go to all the places in SD and see every inch of this state and meet the people I have loved serving these many years.

    Congrats Rick, nice video.

  19. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.04.17

No doubt, Hubba! That video needs a credits roll at the end! Weiland should finish every campaign day by sitting in with a band at the local bar!

  20. Kevin Weiland 2014.04.17

How about it, The Blindman. From the Holly's

He ain’t heavy, he’s my brother. After all, here in South Dakota......the road is long…..

  21. Lanny V Stricherz 2014.04.17

There you go, Bill. You have been commissioned by the candidate himself. It's about time some of those great poetry lines and lyrics get out past Madville.

  22. Kevin Weiland 2014.04.17

Lanny, I'm not the candidate, just a brother who thinks his brother ain't heavy......:-)

  23. Les 2014.04.17

Rick does tug the heartstrings as well with that one. Reality bites.

  24. Lanny V Stricherz 2014.04.17

Kevin, Sorry, I missed the first name. I was so excited that Blindman was going to write some more of his beautiful poetry.

  25. Rick Weiland 2014.04.17

Thanks Stace. I guess we have our love of Johnny Cash in common too!! "Everywhere Man" cost me 7 pizzas, two veggie trays and a few beverages to produce. No "big money"!!

  26. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.04.17

Veggie trays?! Obviously a Michelle Obama nutri-communist.

But seriously, the idea that a video this good is produced on chow and beer is spectacular. Good work, Rick!

  27. Lanny V Stricherz 2014.04.17

Rick, You didn't answer Hubba's question, "Who is that guy". And please commission Blindman to write some lyrics for you. I know it will be a hit.

  28. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.04.17

"Everywhere Man" is already getting national press. The Daily Beast talks to Rick and posts the opening lyrics:

Well I was on my way to meet with voters at the local coffee shop,
When one of my opponents called and said, ‘Rick, when you going to stop?’
He said that listening to all what these voters say
Ain’t going to mean a thing, you know my money is going to rule the day
Well I said you can take all your millions by the sack
But I believe the time has come for us to take our country back."

The Daily Beast also says the band includes one of Rick's brothers and two daughters. I wonder... who's the best South Dakota band Rick could get to sit in with him to perform at the State Fair?

  29. Roger Cornelius 2014.04.17

Dr. Bosworth, take a clue from Rick, this is what you call a great and creative campaign ad.

  30. Bill Dithmer 2014.04.17

I could sure write something, but there are so many songs that fit. You dont have to change much for this to work.Sam and DAve, Ya that's the ticket.

    Don't you ever, feel sad
Lean on me, when the times are bad
    When the day comes
    And you're in doubt
In a river of trouble, about to drown

    Hold on, hold on
    I'm coming, I'm coming
    Hold on, hold on
    I'm coming, I'm coming

I'm on my way, ya I'm your friend
I'll follow through ya, right to the end.
Don't have to worry, because I'm here
No need to suffer people cause I'm here

    Hold on, hold on
    I'm coming, I'm coming
    Hold on, hold on
    I'm coming, I'm coming

    Hold on, hold on
    I'm coming, I'm coming
    Hold on, hold on
    I'm coming, I'm coming

Reach out to me, for satisfaction, yeah
Call my name, for quick reaction

Well don't you ever, feel sad
Lean on me, when times are bad
    When the day comes
    And you're in doubt
In a river of trouble, an about to drown

    Hold on, hold on
    I'm coming, I'm coming
    Hold on, hold on
    I'm coming, I'm coming

"Dr. Bosworth, take a clue from Rick, this is what you call a great and creative campaign ad."

Your're right Roger. Rick is also what they call a leader. Not a fake leader like Bosworth.

  32. Les 2014.04.17

I'm not quite sure what you fellas might be gaining by comparing Rick to Boz or vice versi.
    .
Whew................... Is it any wonder......hey I think another tune for the Dem's might be coming.

  33. Roger Cornelius 2014.04.17

    Les,

There really isn't a fair comparison between Rick and Annette.

  34. Tara Volesky 2014.04.17

OK, enough on Annette. You knocked her down and you've knocked her out... you don't need to kill her. I feel terrible for how this thing has unraveled but we all have problems in out lives. There is so much stress in a campaign and people are darn right mean. She is not a politician. I hope things turn out well for the Bosworth family. Don't make fun of a tragedy. I would like to meet her someday.

  35. owen reitzel 2014.04.17

Sorry Tara but until she's out of the race she's fair game. By calling Cory a commie she's calling me a commie and I don't like it.
The differences we have in this country maker us stronger, but not when it becomes personal like Bosworth has made it.
Besides Cory has done nothing but provide facts for what Bosworth has done.

  36. Hubba 2014.04.17

Rick Weiland and the Wilt Brothers, Cory.
    Thats what I wanna see!
But bring along that as-yet unnamed dude on the G&L. And his amplifier.

  37. Stephen 2014.04.17

Great video Rick! You are a true South Dakotan.

  38. Mike Quinlivan 2014.04.17

Best SD Band? I would submit The Stallions, who's ranks include South Dakota Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Jim Grothe! And also Mike McClintock, my wife's biological father. Great guys, awesome musicians, and would be a great backing band. Or for a little blue grass feel, perhaps the Crabgrass Crew? My dad helped started the band in 1967 or 1968, and after some of the members learned how to play in the 1970's, they have become quite good!!! ;)

  39. Jason Winter 2014.04.17

As someone that has a great love of classic country and country music history, I feel it is my duty to educate South Dakota Democrats that "I've Been Everywhere" is a Hank Snow Song. Johnny Cash recorded it as a cover 30 years after it was already a number one hit for Hank Snow (who adapted it from an Australian Song). It was never a number one hit for Johnny Cash. Please give Hank Snow the credit he deserves.

  40. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.04.17

Thank you for that music scholarship, Jason! But if we cite the original author, then the GOP will say Weiland is trying to pull off a Snow job... ;-)

  41. Joan Brown 2014.04.17

This morning when I was looking for a local store that might have a CD by Johnny Cash with the song on it, because my adult mentally disabled daughter wanted the song, she was familiar with it. I found it on the Target web site and it had to be ordered. Anyway, I found it on a Hank Snow CD and a Johnny Cash CD. She was familiar with most of the songs on the Johnny Cash CD, so I played samples on the Hank Snow CD for her and she wanted me to order the Hank Snow one.

  42. Lanny V Stricherz 2014.04.17

Hey Stan, This guy is almost as whacky as Dr Bosworth. "Nancy was right, we have to pass AHCA to see what is in it." Bet you didn't say anything when they passed the Patriot Act without reading it did you? I don't know who the you is in your post, but if that is a collective you, please leave me out. I know that we need to repair our country, but it sure ain't gonna happen with a guy like this clown or Dr Bosworth.

  43. grudznick 2014.04.17

Mr. Stricherz is right with that. We need men like Mr. Rhoden who are sound of mind and conservative of nature.

  44. Lanny V Stricherz 2014.04.17

Don't know if I need to clarify, grudz, but I meant the guy in the video that Stan put out. I don't want Rhoden. It's either Stace or Rick for me at this point and I haven't ruled out Pressler yet either. Really the only ones that I have ruled out are Rounds, Rhoden, Bosworth and Howie.

  45. Stan Gibilisco 2014.04.17

Shucks. I'm just trying to stay sane by acting nuts.

Lanny, I was afraid to say anything when they passed the Patriot Act.

I was not even in the bloggoellipse then anyway.

  46. grudznick 2014.04.17

I am keeping you marked down as a +1 Rhoden, Mr. S. I know you'll come around.

  47. Les 2014.04.17

Sorry Grud but Larry needs to separate himself from the pack. Something that will only get harder unless candidates continue to implode around him. I wouldn't bet on that with the short time frame ahead.

  48. grudznick 2014.04.17

When I update the Big List tomorrow at breakfast, Les, I'll mark you down in the "Leaning Rhoden" category because I can tell you're going to come around. You are a good man, sir.

  49. Douglas Wiken 2014.04.17

Putin and company are now or will soon be requiring all bloggers be registered and certified by the state.

  50. Stan Gibilisco 2014.04.17

    Oops, I meant "blogoellipsoid."

Please take me as seriously as you would take any other registered Republican who favors socialized medicine. If such a one exists ...

Honestly, I like Rick. Alas, he has about as much chance of getting elected as Dr. Bosworth does.

It'll be Rounds, and the country will stay broken.

Even Hillary won't be able to fix it.

She will get elected in 2016 and if she does not die of overwork and a broken heart, again in 2020.

  51. owen reitzel 2014.04.17

Rhoden was pretty irrelevant to me until at the debate he said that if elected Senator he'd try to make the last 2 years of Obama Presidency pure misery.
I don't know about anybody else but I sure don't want that out of my Senator. We already have one doing it. We don't need 2.

  52. Deb Geelsdottir 2014.04.17

That was great! Cheerful, upbeat, positive. Goooooo Rick!

  53. Lynn G. 2014.04.18

Hey Rick! What a great video and I hope it serves as your campaign and then elected senate theme song! I feel it ranks right up there with Paul Wellstone's original campaign ads that were creative, memorable and funny that helped get him elected by just telling voters that way it was. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aTiW0YCMM0g

Your video just energized me! It's down to earth just like the wonderful towns and people of the state.

  54. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.04.18

Positive, upbeat... Wellstone?!? Yes! That's exactly what South Dakota Democrats need! More, more, more, Rick!

  55. Deb Geelsdottir 2014.04.18

Yup, that was Wellstone. He likened himself to the "Happy Warrior" type of politician, like Hubert Humphrey. Wellstone encouraged people to enter politics. He said it does not have to be a dirty or ugly thing. It is how the People's Work gets done. It is how we had Democracy!

Wellstone's *accidental* death was a great loss, not only for MN, but for our US Congress. It was also the only way slimy Norm Coleman was ever going to win.

  56. Les 2014.04.18

It was widely speculated a suspicious death and I felt it was probable. After all, Paul Wellstone was one of only 8 senators who voted against the repeal of Glass-Steagall. It doesn't take much to keep the senate in line.

  57. Lanny V Stricherz 2014.04.18

And every Democrat on the Senate banking committee, including our own Senator Johnson voted in favor of sending it out of committee. The only one who voted against in committee, was Richard Shelby from Alabama.

Thanks Senator Johnson et al for destroying a good share of the privately held wealth in this country, that is those of us who worked for it and were not in on the great secrets behind the collapse to take it away from us.

  58. Deb Geelsdottir 2014.04.18

Les, a Minnesota friend who was politically close to the Wellstones is certain it was murder, that the plane was tampered with. My friend is not a conspicuous theorist type, nor is she given to exaggeration. I believe her and I'm not a conspiracy theorist type either. Thousands of Minnesotans believe the same.

It's a horrible crime, wiping out an entire generation of a family.
