Original Pancake House Rejects Accusation of Religious Discrimination

Last updated on 2014.07.28

Travis Betsworth, general manager of the Original Pancake House in Sioux Falls, categorically denies an accusation that it fired an employee for praying with customers.

Mr. Betsworth said this afternoon, "We would never fire anybody for praying." Quite the contrary, Betsworth says he himself has taken time to pray with customers at their tables during regular business hours. Many church groups come to his restaurant; Betsworth estimates some sort of Bible study or other church-related activity is taking place in his restaurant five days out of each week. Many religious customers leave church cards in the store tip jar.

Betsworth was responding to an accusation leveled by a paid political spokesman for failed Senate candidate Annette Bosworth. The spokesman claims that waitress Shauna Rose was fired for praying with Bosworth and her spokesman just before the primary:

The first time I met Shauna was just before the June election. She was working as a waitress at the Original Pancake House in Sioux Falls. I went in with my friend Dr. Annette Bosworth when we were on our way to a press conference. We prayed at the table before breakfast and Shauna, who knew Dr. Bosworth, bowed her head with us.

Shauna was fired by the Original Pancake House a couple of days later. She was told by a co-worker that it was for praying with us.

Guess where I’m not going to eat pancakes again? [paid spokesman for Annette Bosworth, "Update on Dakota Reporter and RIP Shauna Rose," "Dakota" Reporter, 2014.07.25]

Betsworth says he has no knowledge of the alleged interaction between Bosworth, her spokesman, and Rose. Betsworth says that if he had witnessed such a prayerful interaction on the job, he would have praised Rose for treating customers so well. He would not give further details on managerial decisions affecting Rose's employment at Original Pancake House, but Betsworth flatly denied that Rose would have been fired for praying with a customer. Betsworth says he and the restaurant's two other managers make staffing decisions cooperatively, and no such decision to fire any employee for praying has taken place on his watch.

Rose died in a motorcycle accident on July 16. Betsworth says Rose was "very loved" at the restaurant. Many employees attended Rose's funeral, says Betsworth, and he believes the owners of the restaurant sent flowers.

Independent candidate for lieutenant governor Lora Hubbel made a public statement online yesterday citing the Christian discrimination accusation to discourage people from eating at the Original Pancake House, whose Sioux Falls shop on West 41st is the Oregon-based company's only South Dakota franchise. Betsworth says that prior to his interview with the Madville Times, he was not aware of any calls for boycott, complaints made to the store, or the original accusation of religious discrimination. Betsworth says no other bloggers or reporters had contacted him to inquire about Rose's employment at Original Pancake House prior to this Sunday interview.

Someone's death after being fired is a sad and unfortunate coincidence, but to try and hurt the former employer without solid evidence is wrong!

  2. JeniW 2014.07.27

If Shauna had played the game of Yahtzee with the customers, my guess that she would have been fired, just as bartenders and servers would be fired for sitting down with customers and consuming a beer.

A dead person cannot tell tales, so it is very safe and easy to accuse the owner of discrimination.

How low will some people go to use a tragic situation to their gain? I never would have thought Lee would stoop to that level. Obviously, I was wrong.

If Lee and Lora can prove in a court of law that Shauna was fired based on her religious beliefs/practice, then I might, and I emphasis "might," consider them seriously.

IMO, there is no major threat to the business. From what I had seen, most of the customers are senior adults who go there regularly to socialize. The food is good, and relatively inexpensive, so those folks are not likely to stop doing business there.

Thank someone for the FDA if people feel the need to pray at a pancake house.

  4. JeniW 2014.07.27

MfI, thank you for making me laugh!! That was a good one!

  5. Roger Cornelius 2014.07.27

Simple enough, provide the termination letter.

  6. DeeJay Beejer 2014.07.27

What proof is there she was even fired? She could have left there for a hundred reasons. Possibly because she didn't get along with one of the employees that later supposedly spreads rumors about her being fired. I can tell you that is Shauna was a good -- or even mediocre -- worker she would never have been fired, as good -- and even mediocre workers -- are hard to find. Stranaham was notorious for over and over on this sight writing, "Your lying, Cory. Where is the evidence?" Not only is there no evidence here, this is the lowest I have seen a human being sink in a long time: he has taken someone whom he probably just barely knew, and said several things about the woman who has tragically died that can never be proved. (She was going to work for his blog???) But now, Stranahan has just told the world the woman was fired from a job. Even if that were true, would Shauna's family want one of the last things people knew about her was that she was fired from a job? I don't think so. I have come to believe that Chad Haber is not half as evil and irresponsible as Lee Stranaham.

Lee is the absolute scum of the earth for writing this and posting online. He is defaming someone who will never be able to defend herself in the name of his endless quest for publicity. This is one of those twisted persecution fantasies that a lot of nut-ball Christians love, because their book says "blessed are the persecuted" or whatever. Anyone who's been paying attention should know by now that Lee is a genuinely sick individual who lives only on attention...much like his "former client". They're perfect for each other. I don't know how Cory feels about profanity on his blog, so if he doesn't approve, he can feel free to delete this last line: F[-] YOU LEE.

Roger, if there was a termination letter (and do food-service workers get even that consideration?), it might not do any more than establish that there was a termination. Termination letters may use the standard boilerplate for reasons for termination spelled out in the contract and/or law without giving any details on what really caused the termination.

If, if, if there was a termination.

  9. Rocky Racoon 2014.07.27

Even if it were true, it is 1) Not the business of anyone looking at his lame website 2) Terrible, tacky, insensitive, rude, and thoughtless. He couldn't have had the decency to give the family a mourning period before he starts slamming her firing (for whatever reason) all over the internet. 3) Just another indication that this 'man' is a narcissistic sociopath just like his "former client and friend". Sick, and exactly what i would expect from someone who learned his journalistic integrity from Andrew Breitbart.

  10. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.07.27

Rocky, I hesitated to approach this story for just that reason. Family and friends of Ms. Rose, I apologize if my reporting here causes you additional grief. What tipped my scale in favor of publishing this report was the possibility that a boycott might get rolling against a Sioux Falls business without basis in fact... or at least without the opportunity for some named and knowledgeable source to address what, if anything, actually happened.

  11. Joe K 2014.07.27

Cory, I am glad you checked into this. I personally knew Shauna, and while it had been a few years since we had talked - I think she would have been very upset with the public posting of her being fired. Lee, shame on you for even trying to pervert her job history to help further your interests.

  12. mike from iowa 2014.07.27

Cory-let's save the woodchuck time and just have you admit some relative worked at this pancake house, because you and I know the accusation is probably in the mail.

  13. jerry 2014.07.27

In South Dakota now, there is a trend and that trend is to blame the dead for everything. We know that Rounds blamed Benda for all the bad deeds and missing money at the EB-5. Now his sidekick Bos is doing the same kind of monkey business with this poor deceased lady. A pox on them all.

  14. SDTeacher 2014.07.27

I just can't imagine the thought process that goes into whipping up a political story about a recent and tragically deceased woman. I hope that at the very least Mr. Stranahan got her husband's consent before he started down this road. As if that poor family didn't have enough grief to cope with.

It seems like he spends a lot of time making unconfirmed/unsupported and potentially defamatory claims. Whenever he gets called on it, the claims disappear under an avalanche of new unsupported/unconfirmed and potentially defamatory claims. His moral compass appears to be set on spin cycle.

  15. Steve Hickey 2014.07.27

Hubble is still a political candidate and she needs to march into the pancake house and personally apologize for spreading a false report. It's an ongoing frustration of mine that those who most frequently smear others falsely in SD are the "Christian conservatives."

  16. Roger Cornelius 2014.07.27

    Cory,
I suspect you're right on the termination letter, she would need one unemployment however.

When there are so many "ifs" in a news story as this is, can it legitimately called news? Landslide Lee seems to have left a few holes in this story of coincidence.

  17. lorahubbel 2014.07.27

Ahhh...Mr. Hickey who allegedly has called himself "the most holy legislator in Pierre" ...allegedly that is. If true, that act instantly negated that position. He considered his church the minister of ministers...allegedly that is... the same Mr Hickey that pals around with the leadership scum in Pierre and worships at their feet...who has no problem kissing the ring so he is deemed popular with the "in crowd"... which is the "Republican" single party ruler in SD (you know...the group that gives political, business and who-knows-what-other favors to those who submit to the Party; their MO is intimidation, lawsuits, flattery promises and position). Hickey is in his glory when his ears are tickled by the flattery and comradeship of the "we are above the law and SD constitution" playboys in the Republican Caucus (mind you, they have no similarity to the Republican platform...they are opportunists and the republican party is just a vehicle for their mischief). Hickey would scold his congregation and his children for running around with this type of scum...but he gets some sort of tingle by being their BFF. AND...contrary to what Hickey alleges, I did not advocate a boycott of the Original Pancake House. Based on the article I read I said I would think twice about eating there. I post hundreds of articles...I should have vetted this one better. I do not know if the article is true anymore thanks to Cory's investigating. THIS is what I do know....it was established by a Christian acquaintance of ours. It was sold, I heard, and my posting of the article was from a sorrow that a solid Christian business may have turned into a politically-correct one.

  18. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.07.27

Whoa, whoa, whoa! Lora, why are you attacking Rep. Hickey here? How does one word you have said about him negate his rather good advice, that you as a candidate should truck over to OPH ASAP and apologize?

And Lora, let's look at your exact text:

"Original Pancake house....a startup restaurant by a Christian....how things change in a few years...please thing [sic] of other options before eating there"

You do not use the word boycott, but the intent to drive business away from OPH is pretty clear.

Lora's subsequent post this evening reads, "I have always heard the Original Pancake House was started by a wonderful Christian family (Fujan's)....did they sell this Great Restaurant? Or is this story not true about the firing a worker for praying..... need to find out for sure."

I'm a bit concerned that you are still offering the story for consideration, when the only named source available says it never happened. By still holding out the possibility, you create the potential for damage to the business. What interest do you have in harming OPH's business and reputation given the evidence available?

  19. JeniW 2014.07.27

Thank you Chad, you saved me from asking Lora the same thing.

  20. Rocky Racoon 2014.07.28

Wow! You're running for office Lora? I've never heard of you before today, but after that rant you just went on you seem about as stable as Annette Bosworth! You managed to make me feel sorry for Steve...and that's no small feat! Keep it up! This could become YOUR "Food-stamp-gate"!

  21. JeniW 2014.07.28

Sorry Cory, I meant you, not Chad... my bad. :(

  22. Roger Cornelius 2014.07.28

You got it Rocky. I've never had much in common or respect for Hickey, but that rant was over the top. Steve Hickey did not create this National Enquire type story, Landslide Lee did and Lora helped spread it.
Now, on her Facebook page she is asking for public verification, obviously she now realizes the Dakota Reporter was short on a few facts.
And yes Lora, this story was not vetted by you or your campaign, is this going to be a pattern for you if elected Lt. Governor? Shooting from the hip is not public policy.

Lora, another word for politically correct is RESPECT!!!

  23. Bill Dithmer 2014.07.28

It's the Hubble, Hickey battle for religious midiacracy. The ongoing pissing contest not between Islam and Christianity, but between Christians. That's not surprising.

What is surprising is that these two political lightweights continue to garner time that could have been wasted elsewhere.

It is a none story. You can be fired for no reason in SD. Either she was, or she wasn't, it doesn't matter one way or another.

What is going on here isn't a failure to communicate, it isn't important, and in the scheme of things wont even register on the scales. What is it then? That's easy, this whole conversation is dumb.

    The Blindman

  24. mike from iowa 2014.07.28

I must be the ACLU because, although I don't agree much at all with people like Hickey,he deserves to be defended from attacks such as this. It must be true that rethugs eat their own. OUCH!!

  25. SDTeacher 2014.07.28

    Lora,
How can you claim to be the only real Christian between yourself and Mr. Hickey when you 1) willingly submitted yourself to the authority of and 2) are openly campaigning for a non-Christian candidate. You want him in the highest office in SD? For Pete's sake, you sat next to Mike while he talked about his spirit guides.

MIke's religious persuasion is irrelevant to me, and Mr. Hickey's moves as a pastor left me cold, but I think someone needs to point out that your hypocrisy is showing.

  26. Steve Sibson 2014.07.28

"Lora, another word for politically correct is RESPECT!!!"

Politically correct is "cultural Neo-Marxism". And RINOs will use it to take down conservatives. That is the herd that Hickey runs with.

  27. Steve Hickey 2014.07.28

Allegedly. She's used the word many times in the rant. Lora takes what she thinks may be true about others - me Deb Peters, Daugaard, Rounds, Original pancake house etc, -- and broadcasts it everywhere. None of what she said about me is true and I've never said or even hinted at any of it. There are times republican leaders want to throw me under the bus. Kissing rings? I'm vilified even by the Christian Right because I've been calling them out.

Roger, it means the exact opposite. I would fully explain but the blog master is not allowing it. I will explain the Politically Correct Matthew 18 Police in regard to Hickey's comments, whether or not he answers my question, if I am not kicked off before I can. [There was once a publisher of a newspaper who censored my labels who is no longer a publisher of that newspaper. Not saying those events were directly related.]

  34. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.07.28

How hard do I have to pull on these reins? The issue here is OPH management's pretty firm denial of a rumor started by a Bosworth spokesman and fanned by a Lt. Gov candidate. The Lt. Gov candidate is backing off to some degree, although in more couched language than I might desire. Should Hubbel apologize, or should Hubbel continue to call for more information on the rumored discrimination?

  35. Rich 2014.07.28

Hubble should apologize. She has zero proof. And I eat at OPH because the food is delicious!

  36. Steve Hickey 2014.07.28

The story here is a Lt. Gov. Candidate who in usual form ran ahead with false allegations and smeared a great business in town. And, that she continued to run of another set of false allegations in the comment string here. Maybe her running mate will rein her in. (For the life of me I can't remember the gov candidates name. Ha! I even scrolled up to see if someone else used it.)

Sibby is trying to make apples and oranges comparing my open invitation for him to come hear from me directly about the things he says publicly about me. Door is still open.

Larry, I'm not an earth hater. I'm a friend of the earth and all who dwell therein.

  37. Steve Sibson 2014.07.28

"Should Hubbel apologize, or should Hubbel continue to call for more information on the rumored discrimination?"

Number one, I am not into pancakes, so this is not that big of an issue.
Number two, where are we going to get more information? The only person we can get that from is the unnamed co-worker. I don't see how there is going to be any more information.
Number three, Lora can decide if she wants to apologize.
Number four, thanks for letting the manager tell his side. Now we all can decide who we want to believe without being raked over the coals by a bunch of politically correct @#&s who have an axe to grind with limited government conservatives.

  38. larry kurtz 2014.07.28

All GOPers are earth haters, Hickey: change parties.

  39. Bill Fleming 2014.07.28

Of course Hubble should apologize. Further, she should completely retract both of her statements on Facebook by deleting them. She should have done that immediately, before people started "sharing." The longer the posts stay up, the more damage they will do. There was never a time when she was even remotely justified in calling for a boycott on this business, because there was never any credibility to the claim. We can't know whether or not Ms. Rose ever actually said what Stranahan accuses her of saying, and of course he knows this. Hubble's failure to see this, and instead jump on the bandwagon to bash this business at a minimum tells us that we don't want her anywhere near the Governor's office.

  40. Steve Sibson 2014.07.28

Since Steve Hickey did not answer my question, I went to Lora and confirmed that he had not gone to her privately before is public statement on this thread. Here is Hickey's position:

"The Bible tells us we must first go to someone if we have an issue with them before we broadcast it to the world. There is nothing except perhaps the beard with regard to Steve Sibson that even remotely reminds me of Jesus."

    http://sibbyonline.blogs.com/sibbyonline/2013/11/steve-hickey-an-officer-in-the-politically-correct-matthew-18-police.html

So what Hickey expected of me, he did not grant to Lora as he publicly went after her on this thread before talking to her privately.

What is also interesting is Hickey's position is a twisting of Scripture. From the same link (yes, my web site, but quoting Brannon Howse):

"Now I’ve found a new set of hypocrites who try to bully us into doing as they say but not as they do, and I’ve christened them the Politically Correct Matthew 18 Police (PCM18). Usually I go after liberals, but some of the PCM18s are misinformed and naïve, yet genuinely well-meaning, Christians. They’re also dead wrong.

What exactly do PCM18s have to do with Matthew 18:15–17? They twist truth to fit their convenience and use it against people like me who blow the whistle on bizarre or heretical claims made in the name of Christ."

"PCM18s would have you believe Matthew 18 means you should never write or speak publicly to oppose one of their gurus unless you first speak to that person privately. This is just an absurd manipulation of Scripture. In reality, the PC police seek to intimidate and manipulate by guilt those with whom they disagree. Apparently, such childish techniques are the best they can muster when backed into the proverbial corner by solid biblical facts. With finger wagging and heaping helpings of self-righteous indignation, they offer verbal or email lashings about how you are sinning and should repent and cease at once from speaking out against false teachers and their accompanying doctrines. PCM18s drone on about how you are not loving or are creating disunity among Christians and how this is such a bad witness to unbelievers. [How many times has Hickey brought up the issue of being "winsome".]"

So I am not surprised that a member of the PCM18 police would join in with you politically correct @#&s to attack a limited government conservative. I am also not surprised the Hickey doesn't practice what he preaches. Because some of what he preaches is false. He just won't admit it, and instead uses bully tactics against those of us who exposes his falsehoods. But Fleming does the same thing. Funny how we have a co-called Christian Theocrat on the same side with a New Age Theocrat.

No matter what Hickey and Fleming demands, Lora does not need to apologize for a position she took on a he said/he said issue.

  41. mike from iowa 2014.07.28

Do you need scripture to tell you when it is time to blow your nose,Sibby?

  42. Steve Hickey 2014.07.28

I used to view the Sibby's and Hubbel's of this state as just difficult and impossible people with zero people skills. Today I view them as toxic and the antithesis of Jesus and detriment to his cause. In reading Sibby for years on these blogs I can't recall one example of a person he ever WON over to his way of thinking. I can think of dozens he's smeared. One can't even agree to disagree with these folks. They are vicious.

  43. Steve Sibson 2014.07.28

"Today I view them as toxic and the antithesis of Jesus"

Mr. Hickey, how did Jesus handle the Pharisees? Did he win them over to his way of thinking?

  44. Steve Hickey 2014.07.28

Yes they won the masses over to their way of thinking and got crowds to turn against Jesus.

  45. Bill Fleming 2014.07.28

Hubbles attack on OPH doesn't have anything to do with political correctness. It is simple vicious, sanctimonious rumor mongering. She should be ashamed of herself.

  46. JeniW 2014.07.28

Steve, I am curious as to why you do not use your blog-site to post your opinions about the various topics?

From what I could see, you have not written anything on your blog-site since the end of May.

Using your own blog-site, you can write about any topic you choose, use any terminology that you want to use, and you do not even have to deal with anyone else using your site to express their opinion.

  47. larry kurtz 2014.07.28

Jeni: when Sibby posts something railing on the culture of corruption in South Dakota I wield it pretty viciously on twitter.

  48. larry kurtz 2014.07.28

Steve Hickey, too, btw: the right-field reverend and this left-field blogger agree on many things but diverge on his intolerance.

  49. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.07.28

This post is not about Steve Sibson or his blog.

  50. larry kurtz 2014.07.28

It is unfortunate when those with much to lose in a general election would choose to assail a Lt. Governor candidate taking on the status quo in Pierre.

  51. JeniW 2014.07.28

Fair enough Cory, I am just curious as to why he is able to attack others using your blog, and this topic to do it on.

  52. Bill Fleming 2014.07.28

    I kind of disagree, Cory.

This post is exactly about Steve Sibson and the kind of borderline libel and slander he and those like him do all the time.

    Steve is a character assassin.

That's how his blog got started in the first place.

He set out to slime Tom Daschle and David Kranz.

Make no mistake, the kind of malice they spew is our political enemy.

    In spades.

Funny thing is, over the years, they've morphed into becoming everybody's political enemy. And now even the GOP doesn't know what to do with them.

They should never have released the hounds.

Now all of us have to go around cleaning up their sh*t.

  53. Steve Sibson 2014.07.28

JeniW, it is Lora Hubbel who is under attack in this thread. I guess you can't have an opinion nowadays unless the opinion fits certain people's worldview. She and others who hold to a conservative limited government viewpoint are discriminated against by the politically correct @#&s.

Lora is not one who just follows the leader. If more information comes out that confirms the manager, I am sure she will do the right thing.

  54. Jenny 2014.07.28

I agree Bill, if you've noticed Mr Sibson has a way of always making every topic about himself and his biblical agenda, and we fall right into his trap.

  55. larry kurtz 2014.07.28

It has been the Right's agenda all along, especially in South Dakota: make the campaign climate so vitriolic that it forces all but the white geezer class who regularly vote for the earth hater party.

Exactly what Wadhams et al. expect of PP.

  56. Bill Fleming 2014.07.28

That's right, play the victim. What a crock.

  57. JeniW 2014.07.28

Steve, how about letting Lora use your web-site to help share her perspectives about this and other topics?

  58. Steve Sibson 2014.07.28

    "That's right, play the victim."

    JeniW used that line.

"Mr Sibson has a way of always making every topic about himself and his biblical agenda"

I thought this thread included a Christian Pancake House that supposedly fired someone for praying. How dare I bring the biblical agenda forward.

  59. Bill Fleming 2014.07.28

First, there is no way to know if it happened or not, and no reason to assume it did, considering it comes from the website of a known bald faced liar.

Second, the only person alive who would know for sure (Betsworth) has now publicly denied having fired Rose for praying.

Says he would have perhaps even prayed with them.

Any insistence that the story is true and trying to leverage it into proof that people are suppressing prayer and/or Christian faith is pure manipulative fiction with not a shred of evidence to support it.

    Playing the victim.

    aka. Bullsh*t.

  60. SDTeacher 2014.07.28

I've never seen a single post by Mr. Sibson that was worth a response and I've often wondered why others bother. He's not here to have an intelligent conversation. He's here because if his BS was relegated only to his own blog, nobody would read it. He's here because this is the only place he can manage to get somebody to bite. Hence, if people would like to stop seeing him here, they should ignore him. Eventually he'll find another place where he can prompt a response. He's a typical three year old. Any attention is good attention in his book. Indeed, he seems to prefer negative attention; it plays into his persecution complex.

I promise Cory, that's the last I'll ever write about Mr. Sibson.

  61. Steve Sibson 2014.07.28

    "Playing the victim."

I thought the Pancake House is played as the victim by Cory.
I thought the rich oppressing the poor is victim thinking.
I thought whites oppressing colored is victim thinking.
I thought Christians oppressing gays is victim thinking.
All of these being pushed by @#&s, who think the only solution is to attack the oppressors, such as a white Christian limited government conservative.
The real oppressors in this thread are the two bullies I singled out, who use the politically correct @#& tactics.

  62. larry kurtz 2014.07.28

Do you have a crush on Lora, Sib? She is kinda hot in a Betty Crocker sorta way.

  63. Bill Fleming 2014.07.28

No, rich DO oppress the poor, whites DO oppress non-whites, and fanatical Christians DO oppress gays.

    There is empirical evidence.

There is NO evidence that Christians are being oppressed at OHP.

    None.

  64. Steve Sibson 2014.07.28

SDTeacher just made it on the bully list. Claiming that I can't have an intelligent conversation all because he or she doesn't want to respond. Go ahead blame me for your own problem in order to argue that I should be ignored because I don't think like you do. Sounds like a solid candidate to run a theocracy.

I am here to see if you people can actually defend what you say. Some do a very good job of it. Others, not so much.

So will someone provide an intelligent reason for Lora to be forced to say an apology based on the word of one person, which is conflict with what another as claimed. And that refutation came after Lora believed the web site report.

Second, can somebody give me an intelligent reason for a preacher to publicly attack Lora when his rule is that such confrontations should be done in private?

  65. Steve Sibson 2014.07.28

"There is NO evidence that Christians are being oppressed at OHP. "

Yes there is. And if one is truly oppressed, then they are not victims? If they mention it, they are not playing the victim?

  66. Bill Fleming 2014.07.28

People who pretend they are oppressed when in fact they are not are either delusional and in need of mental therapy or they are bald-faced liars.

I usually give you the benefit of the doubt, Sibby, by recommending that you seek psychological counsel.

But maybe you don't need it.

Maybe you are just a plain-old, run-of-the mill liar.

  67. Bill Fleming 2014.07.28

Me: There is NO evidence that Christians are being oppressed at OHP. "

    Sibby: Yes there is.

Me: Then cite it. What is the evidence.

  68. Roger Cornelius 2014.07.28

Where is the Myers/Hubble campaign manager Tara Batchelder Volesky on the subject of OPH? Or have we in fact heard from her?
Tara reported over the weekend that Myers will be holding a press conference in the next few days to announce a legal challenge to Gant on the Hubble ballot issue. I'm wondering if he and Lora will address this recent controversy.
Steve Hickey shouldn't have to consult with Hubble about calling her out and suggesting she apologize for her OPH comments, Lora was very public about in her reaction to Landslide's story, Sibson is disgustingly attempting to shift responsibility to Hickey for Hubble's reckless response on her Facebook page and on this thread.
Hopefully this story doesn't go all sideways and lose its original intent. By what few facts we have, Landslide Lee is representing only side of this story.
Sibson, don't you think Landslide should have at least interviewed the owners of OPH? I'll give you a few minutes to consult the Bible for your answer. A true investigative journalist/blogger will contact or attempt to contact all parties involved in a story. Landslide did not report on any discussion with the OPH owners, he recklessly ran with a story that is seriously short on facts.

  69. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.07.28

JeniW, Lora doesn't have to go to Sibby's website to express her views on the current topic. She is welcome to do so here, and has done so... although in a scattershot, ad hominem way that doesn't make her case much better. An assault on Rep. Hickey's integrity or standing with the SDGOP belongs under a separate post. It actually suggests that the Myers-Hubbel campaign may be leaning toward the tactics of the Bosworth-Haber campaign. Yikes.

I will accede to Bill Fleming's "kind of" disagreement and acknowledge the parallel between the Bosworth-Haber tactics, the Hubbel attack on Hickey, and Sibby's origins in the Thune faux-blogstorm. Interesting now to see those tactics turned on Republicans like Hickey and Christians like the manager at the pancake restaurant.

  70. Steve Sibson 2014.07.28

"Steve Hickey shouldn't have to consult with Hubble about calling her out and suggesting she apologize for her OPH comments, Lora was very public about in her reaction to Landslide's story, Sibson is disgustingly attempting to shift responsibility to Hickey for Hubble's reckless response on her Facebook page and on this thread."

Roger, I agree that Hickey had no obligation to go private with Lora first. That is "his" rule. What do you call one who makes rules, but does not follow them himself?

Bill, the evidence is the web report that Cory linked to. Now answer my questions. Do those who are truly oppress to not be considered victims? And if they mention the oppression, they are not playing the victim?

  71. Bill Fleming 2014.07.28

I've already answered that question, Steve.

"People who PRETEND they are oppressed when in fact they are not are either delusional and in need of mental therapy or they are bald-faced liars."

A person who is truly a victim is not playing.

  72. Steve Sibson 2014.07.28

"Sibson, don't you think Landslide should have at least interviewed the owners of OPH?"

I don't think you will find one manager who will admit that they don't allow their employees to pray. With that said, I too question the web site report. But my questioning of it does not make it false.

Again, I applaud Cory for bringing in the manager's side of the story. His strong denial deserves equal consideration at this point. I don't eat pancakes, but that is my only reason for not dining at the OPH. I might go in for a couple just to see if a coworker could collaborate one side of the story.

  73. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.07.28

    Matthew 18? "Victim"? Meaningless. Uninstructive.

  74. Steve Sibson 2014.07.28

Bill, thanks for telling me the rules of your theocracy. Now tell me again that I am crazy, since it is not true, then I am only "playing" a victim when I say you have attacked me. That is your logic, not mine.

  75. mikeyc, that's me! 2014.07.28

What the heck were we talking about?

  76. Steve Sibson 2014.07.28

[Cory, sorry for allowing myself to go off topic with Fleming's victim thing. I will end our conversation for now.]

The PC Matthew 18 issue is relevant regarding Hickey's public insistence that Lora apologize, which did happen on this thread.

[So I am trying to stay in line. I hope more so that just issuing "earth haters" allegations.]

  77. larry kurtz 2014.07.28

If Sibby were smart enough he might be diverting our attention from Bendagate (and all the other ills afflicting his state) for remuneration.

  78. Bill Fleming 2014.07.28

Yes, you are playing the victim, Steve, by pretending to be offended and playing on other's sympathy. The payoff for you is that you get to engage in character assassination via outright lies, rumors and innuendo by duping people who want to believe you are like them in your religious beliefs.

  79. Lynn 2014.07.28

Aside from Sibby going on yet another blog dominating tirade we go back to the topic of the thread.

Is this just another example of Chad and Annette and possibly Lee taking advantage of a well publicized tragedy where they try to capitalize on it to further their own interests?

Did Chad, Annette and Lee eat there? If so, Was Rose Betsworth working that shift and did she even wait on the Boz circus table? Is there proof? Sorry but given their history I can see them manufacture all of this to help generate outcry and donations for the Annette Bosworth Facebook Church and Legal Defense Fund. There just seems to be no limit with what these people will do no matter how distasteful it is.

  80. Steve Sibson 2014.07.28

"I will accede to Bill Fleming's "kind of" disagreement and acknowledge the parallel between the Bosworth-Haber tactics, the Hubbel attack on Hickey, and Sibby's origins in the Thune faux-blogstorm."

Cory, now I understand the real motive of this thread...to create conspiracy theories and helping support them with characters that play the victim. If Lora did apologize, it would only spark more political attacks by this web site that would make Wadhams proud.

  81. Steve Sibson 2014.07.28

Cory, since you are portraying the manager as a "Christian", did you get his position on gay marriage?

  82. Bill Fleming 2014.07.28

Lynn, good point. Why would anyone believe anything Stranahan says? He's a self-confessed pornographer and muckraker.

  83. Tara Volesky 2014.07.28

Did you guys beat up on Oprah Winfrey, when she said she would never eat beef again?

  84. Steve Sibson 2014.07.28

    Muckraker:

"The term muckraker refers to reform-minded journalists who wrote largely for all popular magazines and continued a tradition of investigative journalism reporting; muckrakers often worked to expose social ills and corporate and political corruption. Muckraking magazines—notably McClure's of publisher S. S. McClure—took on corporate monopolies and crooked political machines while raising public awareness of chronic urban poverty, unsafe working conditions, and social issues like child labor."

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muckraker

And into pornography too? Must be a liberal.

Larry, I think you are right. This thread is distracting us from talking about Benda and South Dakota's crony capitalism. But it is not me, it is Cory and his sidekick Fleming. And they seem to be all worried that we may damage Hickey and the conservative label that Hickey falsely gives the SDGOP crony capitalists.

  85. larry kurtz 2014.07.28

Did Oprah start eating meat again, Tara, is her conscious-raising about how cattle are killing the planet bugging you, or are you just kidding us?

  86. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.07.28

Tara, did Oprah base her anti-beef statement on an unverifiable statement from an unnamed second-hand source?

  87. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.07.28

Steve, don't let me distract you. I have a GOED/EB-5 post up, ready and waiting for your contribution of documentation and relevant commentary.

  88. Roger Cornelius 2014.07.28

    Sibson,
    You are being deliberately obtuse.

Cory is not using this thread to distract from GOED/EB-5 scandal or Benda's murder. If you scroll up a few threads you will find a post dated today regarding Jackley and Costello's attending a hearing with the Legislature's Government Operations and Audit Committee.

If you want to discuss Benda, crony capitalism corruption or the many other ills Rounds is responsible for, scroll up and comment there.

  89. Roger Cornelius 2014.07.28

I don't give a tinker's damn what anybody eats, including Oprah Winfrey

  90. Steve Sibson 2014.07.28

Roger & Cory, I will check out the Benda thread. But it seems there is theme on this thread that is critical of those limited government conservatives who do not consider crony capitalism a good thing nor a conservative thing. Perhaps it is a good thing to challenge tactics, but I don't think forcing an apology out of Lora is a good tactic if you support her efforts to challenge crony capitalism.

  91. Bill Fleming 2014.07.28

Okay, I'll bite. In what way is the owner of the Original Pancake House in Sioux Falls a crony capitalist?

  92. Roger Cornelius 2014.07.28

Would a forced apology from Lora meaning anything, Steve?
If it were forced, even if that was possible, would an apology to Hickey be sincere?
Steve, all too often you go off the deep end with irrational theories and become an apologist for Christians behaving badly.

  93. Tara Volesky 2014.07.28

Lora made a sincere comment and followed up with "I have always heard the Original Pancake House was started by a wonderful Christian Family (Fujans)...did they sell this great Restaurant. Or is this story not true about the firing a worker for praying...need to find out for sure. Guess she needs to plead the 5th on any topic that doesn't relate to the campaign. Hope you support Mike and Lora at their press conference tomorrow announcing their lawsuit against the SOS.

  94. Bill Fleming 2014.07.28

Tara, why doesn't she take the post down until she knows for sure what she's talking about? What good is gained by leaving it up there?

And how about the first post? The one that's asking people to "thing (sic) of other options before eating there?"

Why would she leave that up if she had doubts about her claim?

And why wouldn't she at least correct her typo?

It all points to someone who is reckless, careless, doesn't pay attention to detail, jumps to conclusions, and shouldn't be trusted with executive authority in government.

  95. Tara Volesky 2014.07.28

So what you're saying Bill, is you want Lora to be politically correct, and take the posts down? No can do, not going to happen. She will not be controlled and intimidated by the Republican establishment, media or anybody that likes the status quo. She asked an honest question, made an honest opinion and right now is focusing on the Presser tomorrow at the downtown Library in Sioux Falls, 11:30 AM.

  96. Bill Fleming 2014.07.28

I want her to act like a decent human being, Tara.

  97. Bill Fleming 2014.07.28

She should be controlled by her own conscience. The fact that she doesn't seem to have one is worrisome both politically and morally.

She is willfully trying to harm a person's business based on rumor and innuendo with no proof.

She may feel self-righteous about it, but the fact is, she's trying to hurt this man's business with nothing but a third hand rumor as basis for her actions.

If she doesn't want to eat there, fine.

But for her to call on others to boycott the place is a hostile and unjustified action against one of her fellow citizens.

    Unconscionable.

And so is your defense of her.

  98. Tara Volesky 2014.07.28

Bill, do you personally know her? She is one of the most decent human beings I have ever gotten to know. I call her Sister Lora, because she reminds me of Sister Simone Campbell. I got to visit with Sister Simone, and she said she doesn't listen to the Hierarchy of the Catholic Church, In fact the Bishop didn't want her to come speak at Mt. Marty. She came anyway. Well, the Republican establishment didn't want Lora to run against Daugaard, she ran anyway.

  99. Deb Geelsdottir 2014.07.28

"Politically correct" has been beaten entirely out of it's original shape. It has become a pejorative and that irritates me.

In the big inning it was about being considerate and respectful of others. I want to be titled Ms. If you are a kind and thoughtful person, you'll do so because I asked. It's not different from Richard, who prefers his full first name be used, rather than calling him Dick. Because I try to treat others the way I want to be treated, I'll call him Richard.

It's so strange to me that people are angered by calling an individual what they prefer. I've heard people complain vociferously about using the word Ms. rather than Miss or Mrs. as if it was a great burden on them. Bizarre.

Anyway, that's my recollection of the big innings of Political Correctness. It became a negative because the old white guys, the dominant culture, felt terribly inconvenienced at being asked to use a different word or make a moderate behavior change. Since then, old white guys, and young ones, have made a lifestyle of victimhood.

Sigh. Life i is soooo hard!

  100. Bill Fleming 2014.07.28

No, I don't know her, Tara.

But if she's as decent as you say she is, she will quit behaving indecently towards this person as a matter of conscience.

Would Sister Simone Campbell try to harm someone's business for no apparant reason?

And don't kid yourself or let her kid you.

    This isn't about politics.

    It's about religion.

She's calling for a boycott of this man's business because she thinks (apparently mistakenly) that he fired someone on his staff for praying.

  101. JeniW 2014.07.28

It is good that Lora has supporters.

I do not know her, but I can believe that she is a very nice person.

I disagree with her philosophy and style, so I would never elect her to any position that involves making decisions that would effect many people.

  102. Tara Volesky 2014.07.28

Well Bill, you are wrong, Lora did not call for a boycott. End of discussion. Presser tomorrow....Lawsuit against the SOS. Also, EB-5 discussion on Legislature's Government Operations and Audit Committee. What will Myers and Hubbel do?

  103. grudznick 2014.07.28

Ms. Hubbel is an embarrassment to the GOP so it is good she is running as an Indy. Mr. Sibby, I, for one, do not think, in the least, that Mr. Fleming is a sidekick for Mr. H, or for anybody, for that matter. My good friend Bill is a roaddog for no man. However, Mr. Sibby, I will bite on your sympathy lobe as I think these libbies are being really mean to you.

  104. SDTeacher 2014.07.28

I've met Ms Hubbel. I had the misfortune of being one of her constituents. When I saw what she was up to in Pierre and asked her about it, she was rude and dismissive. She clearly did not care what her constituents thought at all. Her thing about being a voice for the people is simply not true unless you're a person who buys into her dogma chapter and verse. Her rant above? That's who she really is.

  105. Tara Volesky 2014.07.28

grudznick, are you Pat Powers? Al lot of these posts are definitely not Democrat posts. Democrats don't attack candidates that are fighting the MACHINE! They would not support Steve Hickey and the Republican establishment. I find it quite odd when Lora attacks the Republican establishment, some anonymous name takes after her. Pat and who ever else that are making anti- Hubbel posts disguised as Liberals......Gotcha! Hubbel is your biggest nightmare Republican establishment.

  106. Bill Fleming 2014.07.28

    boy·cott
    verb
    1.
withdraw from commercial or social relations with (a country, organization, or person) as a punishment or protest.

Lora Hubble on her Facebook page:
"Original Pancake house....a startup restaurant by a Christian....how things change in a few years...please thing of other options before eating there"
    ......................

Sounds like a call to boycott to me. And for religious (not political) reasons.

  107. grudznick 2014.07.28

I, for one, intend to eat there prodigiously after reading Ms. Hubbel's comments. And I will deliver my Republicans with Common Sense Rants to all in my vicinity, I will.

  108. mike from iowa 2014.07.28

If it walks like a boycott and quacks like a boycott then it is most definitely not a boycott. The whole freakin' world is in denial!

Unless,of course,Lora Hubble was acting in her capacity as a stock broker when she was talking about options. I can see how that would confuse some normal people.

  109. Tara Volesky 2014.07.28

SDTeacher, maybe you are Pat Powers. I smell a rat. By your post, you have to be part of the Republican establishment.

  110. SDTeacher 2014.07.28

That's funny Tara. I've been a registered Dem. since I was 18 years old. That being said, I don't think calling someone a republican is an insult. You see, republican and democrat are names of political parties, not dirty words. Although I disagree with many republican policies, it never occurred to me to assume that just because someone registered republican that it meant they were a bad person. I see you think otherwise. It's a pretty immature way of looking at the world, but obviously you have a right to be immature. God Bless America.

  111. grudznick 2014.07.28

Is this Pat Powers fellow completely in charge of the "establishment?" Do the people really in charge of the Establishment know about this?

  112. Bill Fleming 2014.07.28

Grudz, have you noticed how short Pat Power's arms are?

  113. grudznick 2014.07.28

Bill, I think that is an illusion created by the thickness of his neck.

  114. mike from iowa 2014.07.28

Bill Fleming-are you insinuating PP would be better suited for guard than tackle with his short arms? It's a big deal in the NFL and football season is fast approaching.

  115. Tara Volesky 2014.07.28

SD Teacher, there is a difference between being a Republican and a Republican crony or part of the establishment. Hubbel is a Republican who is fighting the Republican crony establishment. I don't think any Democrat will disagree.

  116. grudznick 2014.07.28

Mike, I don't think anybody has established Mr. PP's arm-to-thigh ratio. We do know that Mr. Stranahan had a bit of dwarf in him, though.

  117. Rocky Racoon 2014.07.28

I nominate Tara to be the blog's new Stranahan.

Oh, hey, that's right. This story was actually about Stranahan's BS ham-fisted lie. Where did we get lost here? Can we start a different comment section for Tara to fight people in?

Tara, how do you feel about Lee? Take his word as gospel?

  118. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.07.28

Tara, you are not debating Pat Powers.

Evaluating the propriety of calling for a boycott of a restaurant on the basis one unsourced hearsay rumor from a paid political spokesman does not require that one support Steve Hickey or the Republican machine (and Hickey and the SDGOP are occasionally divergent entities, making supporting both of them occasionally impossible).

Contending that Lora Hubbel's call to boycott OPH was premature and warrants an apology does not require rejecting Lora Hubbel's bid for the lieutenant governorship or any of her positions on other political issues.

Short form: I can say, "Lora, take Mike and Tara and a few other friends out for pancakes, and leave a big tip" and still say, "Lora's a nice gal; I like talking with her."

Shorter form: one can say, "Lora, oops!" and "Down with the SDGOP!"

  119. Tara Volesky 2014.07.28

Gruds, or Pat, you are bought and paid for by the Republican Machine. You are definitely a fraud.

  120. owen reitzel 2014.07.28

Tara just because somebody disagrees with you doesn't make them "bought and paid for" whether they are Republicans or Democrats. Just means they have a different then you.

  121. Tara Volesky 2014.07.28

Cory, when are you going to figure it out, Lora is on your side, plus she's not an earth hater. I like your blog Cory, but I just don't like dealing with those Republican Trolls. lol

  122. grudznick 2014.07.28

Ms. Volesky, at least back when I used to wear a suit it was a "L"ong.

  123. Tara Volesky 2014.07.28

Owen, just read through all the comments, it is so obvious. A Democrat would not attack a person for taking after the Republican establishment. That would be like you attacking me for sticking up for you against your cousin, when he is trashing poor people.

  124. mike from iowa 2014.07.28

grudz, regardless of your arm length,I got lots and lots of taters. What's your pleasure? To tie this comment into this thread, you can have tater pancakes,with/without a side of religion.

  125. Tara Volesky 2014.07.28

What does that mean Grudz, or whoever you are PP. "L", Libertarian or Loser. lol

  126. SDTeacher 2014.07.28

Any democrat who would vote for or otherwise support Hubbel for public office has no idea what she got up to in the house. All you have to do is look at her voting record and you know she's no friend of democrats, or homosexuals, or religious minorities, or anyone who thinks gun control matters, or anyone who cares about reproductive rights....

    http://votesmart.org/candidate/121330/lora-hubbel#.U9b8h6ggadx

Her record speaks for itself and Tara your claim that no democrat would fight against her is absolutely absurd.

  127. Tiffany Campbell 2014.07.28

Rep. Hickey is not close with GOP leadership. In 2012 he was the prime sponsor of an ACLU bill, that takes guts and didn't earn him any points with his party. Lora is a one-term legislator who is completely out of her mind.

  128. grudznick 2014.07.28

Ms. Volesky, in the really off-chance that there are any undecided people with any common sense out there reading these bloggings, do you realize you are turning them more away from Lora Hubbel, even those people who didn't know she is insaner than most? Did you run Ron's campaigns too? Does Lora know about it?

  129. Tara Volesky 2014.07.28

I don't agree with everything she believes in but more reason to vote for the for Hubbel, she is fighting the Republican establishment. You got to love it.

  130. Deb Geelsdottir 2014.07.28

Tara, making blanket statements about "any Democrat", or all those Republicans and so forth, damages your credibility here or anywhere, except with extremists of your inclination. Try to refrain from sweeping generalizations if you are most interested in persuasion. On the other hand, if you are into accusations, venting anger, and scattershot statements, all of which alienate readers, keep doing exactly what you are doing. It's working with me.

  131. Bill Fleming 2014.07.28

Tara, you don't get it do you. We're not challenging Lora for going after Republicans, we're challenging her for trying to boycott a fellow South Dakotan's business for no apparent reason.

  132. grudznick 2014.07.28

I hope this OHP serves good sausage gravy. I'm going to order a pitcher of it.

  133. Tara Volesky 2014.07.28

Yes Pat, oops, I mean Grudz, time to sign off, I thought this was a Democrat blog that wants change. To bad George isn't alive, he was the best. He would love Lora! He was the real deal and a true gentleman. Take a lesson from the Democrat legend. Goodnight.

  134. Bill Fleming 2014.07.28

    Good night Tara.

  135. grudznick 2014.07.28

Tara, I (Mr. PP) have infiltrated and imbued my breakfast oriented culture among these libbies, and they won't stand for Lora throwing a few good cooks under the skateboard of the Meyer's campaign machine. Some of these ladies and fellows are decent folk, libbie or not. grudznick stamp of approval on some.

  136. Tara Volesky 2014.07.28

Mr. PP, if you don't like Lora throwing a few Republicans under the skateboard on the Myer's campaign machine, then go back where you belong, to SDWC.

  137. grudznick 2014.07.28

Mr. Fleming, it has come to my attention that this Pancake House is in Sioux Falls. This explains why I was unfamiliar with their menu.

Can you drive, and do you think we can stay at somebody's house where I don't have to navigate stairs the night before we breakfast?

  138. Roger Cornelius 2014.07.28

Here's the question of the hour, why do politicians make it so difficult to admit when the messed by making a presumptuous comment and not investigating the issue?

Instead Lora and Tara are digging that proverbial hole, at some point you have to quit digging.

From everything I have read about Lora, she is the face of the South Dakota tea party, she represents the opposite of what Democrats stand for. As grudz might say, "A Democrat would have to be insaner than most to vote for Lora".

The Republican "establishment" doesn't dislike Lora because she is a threat to them, they see her as the fringe that makes them look more ridiculous than they already are.

  139. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.07.28

Grudz, I'll take you there next month, if you can promise not to stink up my car and split the gas cost. Bill and Roger can ride with!

  140. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.07.28

Tara, let it go. You get nowhere by manufacturing false opponents. Pat Powers is not here.

  141. Steve Sibson 2014.07.28

"Since then, old white guys, and young ones, have made a lifestyle of victimhood."

There you go Fleming, playing the victim by a man-hating Neo-Marxist who claims to be a Christian, but has no clue what coveting is.

  142. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.07.28

Tara, did I miss something? Please explain to me how this story has anything to do with the Republican establishment. Did the Republicans pass some pancake subsidy? Did EB-5 dollars fund the restaurant?

  143. Steve Sibson 2014.07.28

"She's calling for a boycott of this man's business because she thinks (apparently mistakenly) that he fired someone on his staff for praying"

Now we have Fleming playing the victim card.

  144. Steve Sibson 2014.07.28

Cory, Tara is explaining what I noticed earlier today. You guys are attacking the very people who have passionately stoop up against the SDGOP Establishment and the crony capitalism. You have not answered my question as to the policy position of the Pancake manager in regard to gay marriage. This Biblical Christian needs to know that.

  145. grudznick 2014.07.28

There seems to be only one thing to say. Shotgun!

  146. Rocky Racoon 2014.07.28

Sibby, this started as a story about Landslide Lee and his horrible website spreading unfounded rumors about a deceased woman. You people turned it in to the cluster-fart that it is now.

Confucius say "Biblical Christian is man who believes anything he reads"

Kind of like how Lora blindly believed Little Lee's awful website without considering the source.

    Shave-and-a-haircut, you're dumb!

  147. JeniW 2014.07.28

Steve, what is preventing you from asking the manager about what he thinks of people who are gay wanting to be able to be able to establish a legal contract of marriage?

You do not need be dependent on Cory to do that for you.

  148. Bill Fleming 2014.07.28

Grudz I'm not riding in any seat behind you. Just sayin'.

  149. Steve Sibson 2014.07.28

Rocky, no manager is going to admit to firing an employee for praying. And just because you hate someone doesn't mean we all have to hate them.

JeniW, I am asking Cory because it is his contact and Cory is claiming this guy is a Christian. The jury is still out on that. I am simply doing what others think Lora should have done...seek more information. So lets find out if he is truly a Christian or a fake one like Deb.

  150. Rocky Racoon 2014.07.28

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOBODY EXPECTS THE SPANISH INQUISITION! lol

  151. Bob Newland 2014.07.28

When someone says, "They're a good Christian family," I immediately think, "(S)he said that like it's a good thing."

  152. jerry 2014.07.28

Sibson, you are a flakey fake. Without a doubt, the biggest fraud to hit the blogesphere ever. So what is it that you pulled, was it porn, alcohol, drugs or did you get caught with someone your were not supposed to be with. A fundy is generally a cheat, because we all know you are a racist.

  153. Tara Volesky 2014.07.28

Sibby is not a fraud, he is very misunderstood because he is a genius. I can't even understand half the things he says because he's way over my head. Most geniuses are strange. Sorry Sibby, but I mean this as a compliment.

  154. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.07.28

Steve, I would welcome your follow-up story, complete with interviews with every person with direct knowledge of the situation that you can find.

But could we not get into a "who's Christian and who ain't" debate? We've covered that ground before with respect to President Obama. Start questioning every statement and looking for quanta of Jesus-bearing midi-chlorians, and pretty soon nobody is a Christian.

So let's not make this story any more complicated than it is. The spokesman for a former GOP candidate and a current SDLP candidate tried tried to incite a boycott of a Sioux Falls restaurant on the basis of of something he claimed to have heard from a woman now dead, who herself supposedly only heard the information from another unnamed source. A former GOP candidate, now Independent candidate, joined in spreading that story and boycott call. I've presented evidence from a named source with direct knowledge of the situation who has denied that the alleged incident happened.

So here's the real question you should focus on for your feature, Sibby: why would Team Bosworth-Haber be interested in harming this local business? Why would Lora Hubbel join in stirring up a boycott? (And Tara, please see Bill Fleming's definition above; you don't get to period-end-of-discussion Lora out of that one; own your words)?

I'm willing to let the question of Lora's involvement take a backseat. She's gone on Twitter and said she "messed this up." (I'm still waiting for her to post my report on her Facebook page.)

So Sibby, tell me who gains what by dissing the SF OPH?

  155. Roger Cornelius 2014.07.28

I just fell off my chair and hurt my hip, "Sibby a genius"!!! Now that the pain has subsided somewhat, I can get a hearty chuckle.
Cory, now that Kurt Evans is running for AG, does that mean our road trip is off? With you, me, Bill and Grudz in the same car I had a vision of a cartoon car with arms, legs sticking our of the windows and a lot of yelling.

  156. JeniW 2014.07.29

Steve, since you are unwilling to ask the manager your question, that means that you are not going to die, lose your home or other property, lose your income, not stop being a Christian, and etc., if you do not know (or even if you do know,) about the manager's stance about people who are gay being able to enter into a legal contract, correct?

  157. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.07.29

Roger, add to that vision the fact that I drive a Volkswagen bug. You and me, Bill and Grudz... heck, go get Bob Newland and Kevin Woster, we'll take a whole clown car out for pancakes!

  158. Roger Cornelius 2014.07.29

Now that sounds like a worthwhile road trip.

The clown car would be Landslide Lee, Bosworth and Haber.

  159. Bill Fleming 2014.07.29

...more than a trip. That would be a vision quest. LOL

  160. mike from iowa 2014.07.29

This sucks. Never did find out if PP was being shifted to guard because of his short arms. Relevance? He can't pancake an opponent let alone block a pancake. Mayhaps he could eat a pancake with short arms.

  161. Steve Sibson 2014.07.29

"So Sibby, tell me who gains what by dissing the SF OPH?"

Cory, I don't see this as gain for anybody. Christians should have a right, and we do have a Biblical obligation, to warn other Christians about false Christians. That was what Lora was attempting to do. And Cory, you were the one who brought into play the premise that OPH was "a startup restaurant by a Christian". I checked out their web site, and I did not find the Gospel of Jesus Christ or anything that promoted Christianity. I can understand why you want to take this element of this issue off the table. But it is a critical element for those of us who are Christian, as we need to sort out the Biblical Christian from the false ones. Deception is a powerful weapon used by Satan.

I do hope that "Christian conservatives" learn a lesson here. I have been warning them about Bosworth from the very start. And Cory, I thank you for helping expose that camp's deceptions. If I learn anything new about this particular issue regarding the OPH, I will forward it on to you.

And I hope more see Hickey's role on this thread as he has clearly come out in opposition to "Christian conservatives" and he is one who has two sets of rules...one for everybody else but him, and no rules for himself. That is what happens when you hang out with those who believe they are modern day so-called prophets (google Kansas City Prophets) who talk directly to God and Jesus Christ.

  164. bearcreekbat 2014.07.29

What a fascinating dialog and drama! My favorite oxymoronic statement from the Sib was "solid biblical facts."

  165. Bill Fleming 2014.07.29

Larry, that has to be one of the strangest movies of all times. Remember the part when Billy Bob Thornton gets shot in the foot? "Burns like hellfire!"

  166. larry kurtz 2014.07.29

allegory wrapped in metaphor, bill: my sister has been instructed that the neil young soundtrack is to be played at my funeral.

  167. larry kurtz 2014.07.29

if sibby has done anything here, bill, it's to get you out of your long absence from here: good to have you back.

  168. Steve Sibson 2014.07.29

'My favorite oxymoronic statement from the Sib was "solid biblical facts."'

BCB, A truly oxymoronic statement would be "solid scientific facts" such as macro evolution. But your statement does bring more understanding as to the intolerance directed at Biblical Christians.

  169. lesliengland 2014.07.29

you would like scientists to be tolerant? I don't think tolerance is included in the scientific method. what about macroevolution requires tolerance?

  170. bearcreekbat 2014.07.29

Here is the catch Sibby, you acknowledge that someone [in your sentence you refer to Rep. Hickey] is fully capable of "twisting of Scripture." How does a poor fool like me know whether you are the one who is "twisting of Scripture" rather than Rep. Hickey? I have read the Bible from cover to cover and have not found any indication that your "twist" on it is any more accurate than anyone else's "twist."

Part of the trouble might be that we really have no way of knowing or testing what statements in the Bible are "facts" and what statements are not facts. At least with science we can test for "facts" and if we find evidence that we are wrong we can discard our erroneous conclusions. I don't think you have that option with your "solid biblical facts."

  171. mike from iowa 2014.07.29

...and smite them with Sibby's jawbone.

  172. Bill Fleming 2014.07.29

Mike, do you suppose grudznick was a smiter back in the day? He strikes me as one who may have once smote or perhaps may have once been smitten.

  173. Steve Sibson 2014.07.29

" At least with science we can test for "facts" and if we find evidence that we are wrong we can discard our erroneous conclusions."

No scientist has been able to convert a monkey into a man, so why hasn't evolution been discarded?. And an unbeliever who reads the Bible has eyes but cannot see.

  174. mike from iowa 2014.07.29

I'm torn.Bill. On the one hand, grudz likes taters and on the other hand he seems insaner than most smiters would or should be.

  175. Bill Fleming 2014.07.29

Gravy taters, Mike. Don't forget the gravy. I think it's important somehow.

  176. bearcreekbat 2014.07.29

Sibby, so if I have "eyes but cannot see," will your God hold that against me? Our will your God only punish those that can see, but refuse to believe?

As for your monkey question about scientists turning monkeys into humans - a silly question probably a joke on your part - humans did not evolve from monkeys:

"Humans did not evolve from monkeys. Humans are more closely related to modern apes than to monkeys, but we didn't evolve from apes, either. Humans share a common ancestor with modern African apes, like gorillas and chimpanzees. Scientists believe this common ancestor existed 5 to 8 million years ago. Shortly thereafter, the species diverged into two separate lineages. One of these lineages ultimately evolved into gorillas and chimps, and the other evolved into early human ancestors called hominids."

  177. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.07.29

Isn't there some commandment not to bear false witness... or to at least check your facts before you call for a boycott?

  178. Bill Fleming 2014.07.29

Yes, Cory, especially if it results in subsequent smitings by Sibson and his sycophants. :-) (Man, Mike, that smite thing has a strong hook. Take it out, will ya? LOL)

  179. mike from iowa 2014.07.29

    Circle hook,Bill. Can't control it. :)

  180. lesliengland 2014.07.29

    sib throws driver into lake

  181. Steve Sibson 2014.07.29

    "Scientists believe"

Yes, they have faith but no scientific facts. In other words evolution has not been proven. So why has it not been discarded?

  182. Steve Sibson 2014.07.29

So science has proven Darwin and his theioruy of evolution wrong:

We shall merely attempt to give a bare outline of Mr. Darwin's argument in his last work, without more than the most cursory glance at the more remote conclusions from his theories, or the difficulties which may be opposed to them. The point, as we need hardly say, which Mr. Darwin seeks to demonstrate is that man is descended from the great apes.

    http://devon.freepgs.com/

Time to remove evolution from the science standards.

  183. Lora Hubbel 2014.07.29

187 comments mostly from people who are covering their ears while shouting, LALALALALALA so they don't have to understand the truth here. I would be willing to bet over 50% of these "people" are little pp posing as someone else...but I digress. I'll keep this short so it's understandable to those wiling to listen: please read all original documents. No boycott was called...yes, according to sources Shawna did feel she was canned because of the incident (whether true or not, Shawna felt this way according to a co-worker). I posted the story for interest and for you to think twice about it (ok i had a typo in typing "Thing" instead of "think". It was probably an auto correct that I didn't notice). Why the rage here people?

  184. JeniW 2014.07.29

Since this topic has digressed into another round of religious discussion/arguement:

I thought of the song "Amen" that was sung in the movie "Lilies of the Field." For those who do not know the movie, the movie is about a Mother Superior (Catholic nun,) who believes that a guy with black skin was sent specifically to her to build a church.

    The song lyrics are:

"Amen. Amen. Amen, amen, amen. Sing it over! Amen. Amen. Amen, amen, amen. See the little baby.,wrapped in a manger On Christmas morning! Singing in the temple, talking with the elders Who marveled at His wisdom. Down at the Jordan, John was baptizing And savin' all sinners. See Him at the seaside, talking with the fishermen And made them disciples. Marching in Jerusalem! Over palm branches In pomp and splendor! See Him in the garden, praying to His Father. In deepest sorrow. Led by Pilate, then they crucified Him But He rose on Easter! Hallelujah! He died to save us. And He lives forever! Amen, amen, amen."

Isn't that what Christianity is all about instead of seeing who can piss the longest and further about who is, and who is not a Christian, and condemning each other about each of our own beliefs?

  185. Bill Fleming 2014.07.29

Lora, denial is not just a river in Egypt. You called for a boycott. Admit it and call it off, at least until you have all the facts. Right now, your policy is "guilty until proven innocent." That's not how we do it in America.

  186. mike from iowa 2014.07.29

No one said a boycott was called. Someone did suggest a boycott and that someone was you. Your spokeswoman claims you didn't call for a boycott, but us poor dum libs ken reed.

  187. Bill Fleming 2014.07.29

um... Mike. I said she called for a boycott... because she did.

    *herding cats over here*

    :-)

  188. Roger Cornelius 2014.07.29

    Lora,

Since you proclaim that you did not call for a boycott of OPH and only suggested people make another choice because of Landslide's report, does that now mean you would indeed dine at the Christian OPH?

  189. Steve Sibson 2014.07.29

    "Why the rage here people?"

Because these people hate Christian conservatives who hold a Biblical worldview and are in love with Charles Darwin, who is a basis to their worldview. These people claim to oppose crony capitalism, but have a really good time trashing you. And who has done more than you in South Dakota standing up to the crony capitalists?

Any of you have the intelligence to analysis what Darwin was getting at here:

“At some future period, not very distant as measured by centuries, the civilised races of man will almost certainly exterminate and replace throughout the world the savage races. At the same time the anthropomorphous apes, as Professor Schaaffhausen has remarked, will no doubt be exterminated. The break will then be rendered wider, for it will intervene between man in a more civilised state as we may hope, than the Caucasian and some ape as low as a baboon, instead of as at present between the negro or Australian and the gorilla.”

    https://www.goodreads.com/work/quotes/728232-the-descent-of-man

These people claim the Bible is trash, but Darwin is a god of truth. So Lora, don't feel bad for taking hits from this kind of misguided ilk. Next they will claim Christians are the racists.

  190. Roger Cornelius 2014.07.29

    Sibson,
What the hell does Darwin and evolution have to do with this?
Listen up Steve, we're talking pancakes, Lora, and a poorly written news stroy.

  191. Lynn 2014.07.29

Is Steve trying to drive people away from this blog? His own blog is dead so why is he here? It's just talking in circles and a waste of time with this guy.

  192. larry kurtz 2014.07.29

Sibby, you get the same treatment at DWC from those bozos. Btw: did PP throw you out? Not much from you down there.

  193. mike from iowa 2014.07.29

So,Bill you're the cause of all these problems? Why I never....

  194. Bill Fleming 2014.07.29

Yes, I think I understand what Darwin was talking about, Sibson. It's not very hard to read or comprehend. But, as per Roger, what does that have to do with pancakes and boycotts?

    Even baboons love pancakes.

Are you and Lora saying only the Biblically Christian baboons should be able to eat them?

Or that they should only eat them provided there are no non-Biblically Christian baboons present?

    Please clarify.

    Thanks.

  195. Bill Fleming 2014.07.29

    Sorry, Mike. :-x

  196. jerry 2014.07.29

The only fundamentalist that I know of here is you Sibson and you are most certainly a racist.

  197. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.07.29

Sorry, Lora, I can't accept your rebuttal. Let's look at the original texts:

Team Bosworth-Haber, 2014.07.25: "Shauna was fired by the Original Pancake House a couple of days later. She was told by a co-worker that it was for praying with us."

This statement does not say, "Shauna felt this way" or say that a coworker said Shauna felt this way. Team Haber-Bosworth assert this statement as fact. They say that a coworker said the prayer with Bosworth was the reason Rose was fired.

Team Bosworth-Haber, 2014.07.25: "Guess where I’m not going to eat pancakes again?"

The intent of this statement in this context is unmistakable: we're not eating here again, and we're telling this story to discourage you from doing so, too.

Lora Hubbel, 2014.07.25: "Original Pancake house....a startup restaurant by a Christian....how things change in a few years...please thing of other options before eating there"

You did not ask people to think twice about the story. You asserted that the story was true, that things had changed at the restaurant, and you asked people to think of other dining options.

You and Bosworth-Haber made public statements to discourage people from eating at Original Pancake House. It would be a lot easier to simply acknowledge your words and apologize for them than to deny that you spoke those words.

Besides, Lora, you're better than Annette and Chad. You don't need to manufacture stories of anti-Christian discrimination to get attention and win votes. Why dabble in Chad and Annette's muck? What is there to gain?

  198. Deb Geelsdottir 2014.07.29

Good job Cory. You are correct. I am another one who can't understand why Hubbell doesn't simply apologize and move on. There is plenty of campaigning waiting to be done.

  199. Steve Sibson 2014.07.29

"You asserted that the story was true, that things had changed at the restaurant, and you asked people to think of other dining options."

Yes, based on the premise that the story is true. And before any response by management. Now, do you really think the manager would come out and admit such story is true, even if it was? No way. And would he deny it if it was false? Yes. Simply by asking the question, Cory got what he wanted, a reason to trash a Christian conservative. And then we have Steve Hickey chiming in, with atheists defending him. The last thing Hickey needed was more evidence that he was anti-Christian conservative.

The jury is still out (not in regard to Hickey). This is a he says/he says. I agree, it would be nice to get additional information, but unlikely when it comes to employment issues. All we done here is spread more hate and discontent towards limited government Christians who oppose crony capitalism and fake Christians. Are you all happy?

  200. Steve Sibson 2014.07.29

"I am another one who can't understand why Hubbell doesn't simply apologize and move on. There is plenty of campaigning waiting to be done."

Deb, you don't understand politics any better than you do the Bible. If a conservative apologizes, the intolerant left views that as reason to attack with blood in their eyes.

  201. Bill Fleming 2014.07.29

Sibby, don't look now, but you have egg on your face (need a waffle with that?).

This is a misery of your own making.

Don't try to palm it off on Cory.

He's the only one who had the good sense (and the courage) to any questions.

You and Lora just followed the Bosworth bunny wagon right down the proverbial rabbit hole.

  202. Bill Fleming 2014.07.29

    ...to ASK any questions.

  203. Jenny 2014.07.29

Please go away Sibby. Nobody here is interested in your preaching.

  204. larry kurtz 2014.07.29

Zinda, his face black, his eyes red.

  205. Bill Fleming 2014.07.29

Jenny, as long as we feed him, he'll keep coming back.

    I'm perhaps the worst offender.

Because after almost a decade of blog encounters, I know where all his hot buttons are.

    I'll knock it off.

I thought maybe after a long hiatus, Cory might have evolved a Sibby-free environment.

    Guess not.

    Oh well... See ya!

  206. Steve Sibson 2014.07.29

"The only fundamentalist that I know of here is you Sibson and you are most certainly a racist."

I you folks really care about apologies from those who issue false allegations, go to work on Jerry and Bill. But I won't hold my breath waiting for one.

  207. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.07.29

Sibby, why are you working so hard to keep the story alive? I guarantee, if Lora apologizes, her part in this story pretty much disappears. Instead, you and she keep pouring gas on the fire.

This isn't even a stereotypical liberal-conservative atheist-Christian battle. You, Sibby, are facilitating the godless exploiters who co-opt Christianity for personal gain. I'm airing the view of the apparently churchy restaurant owner whose promotion of Christianity in the workplace would make me uneasy about eating or working there, and I'm actually trying to protect that guy's restaurant from an unwarranted boycott.

The fundamental conflict has little to do with typical political narratives and more to do with an analysis of journalistic credibility. Basically, we have a secondhand anonymous rumor versus a firsthand on-the-record statement. You have to work really hard to excuse valuing the former over the latter.

And so far, no one has contributed any new information that moves the scale away from OPH's favor.

  208. Steve Sibson 2014.07.29

" I guarantee, if Lora apologizes, her part in this story pretty much disappears."

No it won't. Lora never purposely made false allegations.

    Jerry just did.

"You, Sibby, are facilitating the godless exploiters who co-opt Christianity for personal gain"

No I'm not. I am defending a conservative Christian's right and obligation to expose such false Christians, as I have exposed two on this thread. Cory have you ever considered the possibility that both of the parties to the he says versus he says controversy are fake Christians?

  209. larry kurtz 2014.07.29

    today's oxymoron: fake christian.

  210. charlie5150 2014.07.29

I would be willing to pay for a Sibson filter, or a sister site deemed "Sibby Free".

  211. grudznick 2014.07.29

Charlie pays to ban Sibby, Larry's rage opens his checkbook to ban me, Ms. Geelsdottir pays to get me back and then Mr. C pays to ban me again, just as a joke. Lora Hubbel pays to ban Mr. PP and then one of Mr. PP's minions pays to ban Mr. H himself.

    Anarchy. Pure anarchy.

  212. Deb Geelsdottir 2014.07.29

    That's funny Larry.

  213. Deb Geelsdottir 2014.07.29

Anarchy can be awfully entertaining, my friend.

BTW, you know we are not engaged, right Grudz?

  214. grudznick 2014.07.29

    Indeed.

And yes I know you are not engaged to Larry but please don't make me remind you that I'm far too old for you, young lady.

  215. larry kurtz 2014.07.29

grud, you're a few minutes late today: your boyfriend get stuck?

  216. Deb Geelsdottir 2014.07.29

    You wound me Grudz!

  217. grudznick 2014.07.29

    Stuck where, Lar?

  218. Roger Cornelius 2014.07.29

    grudz,
It is obvious who needs to be banned, filtered or taught how to have a relevant discussion
The only way I would ever advocate having you banned, and I wouldn't pay for it, is if you start preaching, praying, and becoming a one man wrecking crew by destroying every blog on Madville.
Like Lynn said, it is to the point of disgusting that we have to endure endless and irrelevant rants about one person's personal agenda.
If Sibson's goal is to take over Madville because his own blog is a dismal failure, he is coming close to succeeding.

  219. Tim 2014.07.29

RC, he only succeeds if we allow him to, I refuse to read or comment to his stuff, just pass it by.

  220. Steve Sibson 2014.07.29

    "That's funny Larry."

Not so much. He is a guy who impersonated my wife using vile comments. I suppose a fake Christian would applaud that.

    No apology from Larry right?

  221. larry kurtz 2014.07.29

As they say in poker, sib: i'd pay $5 to watch pigs have sex.

  222. Steve Hickey 2014.07.29

What church do you go to Sibby?

Answer (as I've asked him before): no church. He is his own church and he is the arbiter of all that is true.

Translation: he's spiritually accountable to no one. All of which by the way puts him at odds with what the Bible says about order and relationship in the Body of Christ. It also means he's dangerous and divisive. But we know that already.

Constrast that to me- I'm accountable to the elders of our church and to the board of ministry of the denomination that ordained me. I can be defrocked for financial impropriety, immorality or doctrinal heresy or a variety of other things contrary to christian conduct. I'm not worried that Sibby's assumptions Of what he thinks I believe are in any way unorthodox.

Yes Sibby I do talk directly to God. We call that prayer.

I knew of a person who would do some major property damage. When confronted about his actions he would rationalize it by say "At least I didn't hit someone."

He reminds me of Steve, who uses words to attack people, then rationalizes it by implying that he is doing so is to benefit others by "exposing" whom he seems to think are bad people, or is providing some type of "warning."

He does not seem to realize, or does not want to acknowledge that his pattern is more apt to cause people to reject God. After all, who would want to having anything to do with a bitter, angry and vengeful being?

In what comments I have read, and it could be that I missed it, he has not said anything positive about God or Jesus.

That is the style that Lee uses. Are Lee and Steve one in the same?

  226. Deb Geelsdottir 2014.07.29

I'm with you on the denominational thing Hickey. I get most concerned about people who create their own church. They answer to no one and can do whatever they want. Whatever they want is sometimes detrimental to the faith and to the members. Sometimes it's even dangerous.

Hickey, what is your denomination? SBC? Mine is ELCA.

Hickey, I went to the denominational website and Wikipedia. How interesting that the ECC developed from a branch of Lutheranism.

There is plenty to like about what I read, and some points of contention. I didn't see anything about Biblical inerrancy, but it seems to me that's how you read it. Also, I read about significant flexibility in member beliefs, but I haven't gotten that sense from you. Would you clarify please?

  231. Steve Sibson 2014.07.29

"He is his own church and he is the arbiter of all that is true."

So Mr.Hickey, does the institution that you belong allow their teachers to take Scripture out of context, invent their own law, and expect people to follow it even though you don't yourself? Such action represents the legalism of the Pharisees who Jesus charged with being hypocrites.

And Deb, seems like the institution of the Church of Rome placed the Pope above Scripture which prompted Martin Luther to start his own church based on the Bible. And you call yourself a Lutheran? Or are you part of the movement that is taking the church away from Biblical principles and instead to follow man-made principles?

You're right Larry. No corn, although they do have buckwheat and wheat germ pancakes.

The Tahitian Maiden's Dream is a menu item that smacks of double entendre however.

    Sibby,

Just stop. As Rep Hickey said, you're not doing the Kingdom any favors with your diatribes.

The last time I checked the first evidence of being a follower of Jesus was that one love one's enemies. Unless I've forgotten my scripture, believers should be patient, kind. not envious, not boastful, and not proud. They should not dishonor others, not be self-seeking, not be easily angered, and keep no record of wrongs.

You're failing on all counts. Nearly everyone fails on all of them. Most of the rest of us do a better job of keeping our mouths shut.

    Please, just stop.

I'm still waiting for any new, substantive evidence that calls into question the OPH manager's statement or offers support for the boycott Lora and Team Haber-Bosworth tried to start.

  241. Roger Cornelius 2014.07.30

Did anyone watch the Lora and Mike presser today? As expected, Myers took nearly 20 minutes to say he was filing a lawsuit in federal court against Gant to keep Lora on the ballot.
Lora introduced Mike and mumbled incoherently about corruption and crony capitalism without any specifics. She had a perfect opportunity to extend an olive branch to the Christians that own OPH and failed to do.
Landslide and Chad are ominously quiet since Kurt Evans announced for attorney general, Landslide has offered no follow up or has any comments about OPH on his blog since his fictional story that generated nearly 250 comments her on Madville discussing everything but Cory's original question.
Maybe the answers lie somewhere within these comments, but I'll be damned if I'll read them again. YAWN!

  242. grudznick 2014.07.30

I saw it, Mr. C. I think they held it today to sabotage Ms. Wismer's calls for people's heads on platters which proves they both are part of the Establishment. They tried to divert media attention away just when Ms. Wismer was making her most passionate speech I bet.

Who put this Mr. Myers fellow up to running and told him to pick Ms. Hubbel? The Establishment.

  243. Roger Cornelius 2014.07.30

    grudz,
I don't really know who put Myers up to running, there is one thing I never discount when it comes to someone deciding to run for office, and that is ego. We always hear talk about so and so being a plant or something, but when the dust settles, it comes down to ego and an unwillingness to accept the odd of them actually winning.
The timing of the presser was peculiar, Myers should have known the media would be more focused on the GOAC hearing than on anything else. After all, his announcement was no real surprise. Once again Myers' strategy was poorly planned.

  244. Lynn 2014.07.30

Roger I watched Meyers on 100 Eyes and although he can contribute to the discussion about corruption and healthcare reform he is a story teller. It took him a while to get to the point and his message out. He's very intelligent and has a great deal of experience being a reporter, healthcare and teaching law at USD but he will most likely be cut off in a debate many times before finishing what he's trying to say. He needs to be more clear and concise.

He wasted time in that presser going over the details of the lawsuit and could of just summarized and used it as an example of why he's running and been more specific quickly with once again a very limited time to hold the attention and time limits of the press.

I wish Mike would of picked a different alternative running mate. Lora Hubbel will end up being a liability on that ticket.

Overall it's a poorly run campaign but hopefully it will contribute somewhat to what we are all fighting against.

  245. JeniW 2014.07.30

Roger, Lora could not, and would not, offer a public apology during a press conference because 1. it would be "politically correct," and 2. it would be "political suicide."

  246. Steve Sibson 2014.07.30

"The last time I checked the first evidence of being a follower of Jesus was that one love one's enemies. Unless I've forgotten my scripture, believers should be patient, kind. not envious, not boastful, and not proud. They should not dishonor others, not be self-seeking, not be easily angered, and keep no record of wrongs."

Kal, great advice, now direct those at Mr. Hickey.

  247. Steve Sibson 2014.07.30

'1. it would be "politically correct," and 2. it would be "political suicide."'

JeniW, a very interesting oxymoron. And with all due respect, I am not saying it is false.

  248. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.07.30

JeniW, I'd be really curious to hear Myers's take on whether a Hubbel apology would be suicide. Heck, I'd like to hear Myers, who indeed was a reporter, discuss what merit he would ascribe to the story Lora promoted as reason not to do business with OPH.

  249. Tara Volesky 2014.07.30

Cory, sorry but Myers doesn't waste his time reading your blog. I did send him the article you wrote on CC the was published in the SD Magazine which happened to be very good. He would rather read a good book.

  250. Steve Sibson 2014.07.30

You are right Tara, no need to distract Mr. Myers on this issue.

"Yes Sibby I do talk directly to God. We call that prayer."

Mr. Hickey, lets not confuse the masses in regard to contemplative prayer, which is on your church's schedule. Here is a warning for you:

One of the continuing snares Christians often encounter in their churches (of almost every denomination) is contemplative prayer. Is it biblical? Why are so many discernment ministries sounding the alarm? After all, doesn’t the Bible say we are to meditate on God’s Word? The answer to that last question is YES! We are to fill our minds with Scripture and think on those verses night and day–or as often as possible.

The problem with contemplative prayer is its mystical/Eastern (non-Christian) roots and its mind-emptying techniques (entering the “silence,” breath prayers, chanting mantras, etc.).

Today on her Sola Sister’s Blog, Christine Pack shared some excellent resources along with “red flag” terms you can look for as well as insights from her own experience in the New Age

    http://standupforthetruth.com/2012/05/the-dangers-of-contemplative-prayer/

  251. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.07.30

That's fine, Tara. Perhaps Lora should follow Mike's example and not waste her time reading the baseless rumors spread by Team Haber-Bosworth.

  252. Jenny 2014.07.30

I understand why you don't win elections, Mr Sibson, with your annoying 'know it all and nobody else does and it's always about me and my bible' personality. You drive people away in herds. People - please don't feed the troll! Please, please please - don't you want your blog back?

  253. Bill Fleming 2014.07.30

Chanting mantras and reading scripture over and over are exactly the same thing phenomenologically and existentially. Both result in an emptying out of consciousness. "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." John 1:1. Om shanti.

  254. Bill Fleming 2014.07.30

Jared Diamond's most recent book "The World Until Yesterday" has a fascinating discussion on the social functions of religion throughout history, and how they interface with scientific thought.

    He lists religious functions as:

    1. Supernatural explanation of things
    2. Defusing anxiety through ritual
    3. Providing comfort about pain and death
    4. Standardized social organization
    5. Presching political obedience
    6. Moral code of behavior toward strangers
    7. Justification of wars

Here's how he ends the chapter:

"Even if sciences answer to the search for meaning is true and if religious meaning is an illusion, many people will continue not to like sciences answers.

If on the other hand much of the world remains mired in poverty or if (worse yet) the world's economy and living standards deteriorate, then all functions of religion, perhaps even supernatural explanation may undergo a resurgence. My children's generation will experience answers to these questions."

  255. Bill Fleming 2014.07.30

    Correction:
    "5. Preaching political obedience" (sorry)

  256. Steve Sibson 2014.07.30

"Perhaps Lora should follow Mike's example and not waste her time reading the baseless rumors spread by Team Haber-Bosworth."

Cory, I will reinforce your advice. Thanks.

Mr. Fleming, one is filling the mind the other is emptying the mind. Your New Age practices are the latter.

  257. mike from iowa 2014.07.30

Can we agree that these were "Original Pancakes" without dragging the bible or scripture into the debate? Or is there some doubt about originality?

  258. Bill Fleming 2014.07.30

Mike, it probably depends on whether you are a pancake fundamentalist or a pancake dispensationalist. The former would want you to appreciate and savor the originality of the recipe. The latter would just want you to eat them and get the hell out of there to make room for the next wave of customers. LOL

  259. Bill Fleming 2014.07.30

Au contraire, mon ami. Reading scripture over and over appears to have emptied your mind quite thoroughly, Mr. Sibson.

  260. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.07.30

Well, Jenny, I guess Steve has declared the constructive discussion of this topic over. On to EB-5.

  261. mike from iowa 2014.07.30

I should ask brother Darwin his thoughts on the origin of the species, except I don't have a brother named Darwin. I prefer plain, not cosmetically evolved pancakes.

  262. Bill Fleming 2014.07.30

The best pancakes on the planet are served at the Stockyard Calfe in Bozeman, Montana, Friday, Saturday and Sunday mornings only. It's the holy of holies of pancake making. Breakfast church.

  263. Roger Cornelius 2014.07.30

Sibson should follow Myers and not read Madville Times, he continually interrupts adult conversations.

  264. Leah 2014.07.30

Personally, I hope that this false flag story drives away some of the christian sheep from OPH. It would be nice, as an atheist, to be able to go there at noon on a Sunday & enjoy their ridiculously delicious food while recovering from my hangover. As of now, it's an hour wait to get a two-person table, so we always just end up going to Fryn' Pan. There you can get seated, have your coffee & place your order all in the time it takes to get to the hostess stand at OPH. Oh, & I also think Hubbel should apologize for spreading slander before getting all the facts. Just my opinion. Thanks, Cory, for keeping up such a great website.

    Cheers,

A bleeding heart liberal swimming in the red

  265. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.07.30

Leah, I considered that possibility as I wrote. Why should I, as an atheist, mind if we clear some of the publicly pious Christians out of the queue so we non-believers can get a table and enjoy our crêpes in secular peace?

But even the best crêpes aren't worth deception. ;-)
