Video: Heidelberger Discusses Wismer, Democratic Heat, EB-5 at Forum

Hyperbole! Hand-waving! Hopping around! Even South Dacola can't keep me in the frame when I get fired up and talk about the big blog tour, the Wismer Dakotafest victory, EB-5 and Northern Beef Packers, the Keystone pipeline system, and all things South Dakota. Here's Mr. Ehrisman's video of my speech and our lengthy Q&A at Sioux Falls Democratic Forum on Friday, August 22, 2014. [Parental advisory: someone does say a coarser form of bovine excrement... but it's not me! I wasn't there!]

Thanks again, Forum, for inviting me to share your noon hour!

I like that blue tie Cory, it's your color.

The mad professor, just kidding! No you really do look like a professor, but that's a compliment!

Thanks, Jenny! Blue is my favorite color, followed closely by prairie green.

Thank you Cory for all you do! Without your blog I wouldn't be mentioning EB-5 to all my friends and receiving the reply "What?" Also thanks for setting people straight on the XL pipeline! When will you run for an elected office in SD??

You are one hell of a great public speaker!

  6. Tim 2014.08.24

Tiffany, there are many here, myself included, that believes Cory should be running for public office. If we could somehow put Cory in Noems seat, we the people and the state would be much better off.

Mr. H should definitely start with the legislatures and keep himself here in SD instead of DC. Or Washington. He would make a wonderful member in the legislatures.

Thanks for providing the video Cory, you did an outstanding job for Democrats.

Hopefully Mr. Madville will run for governor at some point, at least I hope so as he has already promised me a job.

Thanks, friends! Whether I'm writing here or speaking live, I am always happy to deliver a performance that informs and entertains.

Now, just for fun, let's entertain what Tim, Roger, and Union mention (echoing a question from the Forum audience member you can hear above), this crazy idea of my running for office.

First, yes, Roger is correct: in the weird alternate universe where I become governor, I appoint Roger as my tribal affairs secretary. We will continue the Capital for a Day program, and the first place I do it will be Manderson. My executive desk will be the table at the back of Pinky's, and Rosemarie will serve every guest that good banana-cream pie. The immediately following Capitals for a Day, before any other towns, will be Pine Ridge, Rosebud, Eagle Butte, McLaughlin, Agency Village, Marty, Fort Thompson, Lower Brule, and Flandreau. Roger, line up my contacts and events in each town, spread out the events from May 1 to October 1, and include visits to at least four Indian schools during May and September.

Now, Pierre or Washington? We need someone to go after Thune, but even the last speech teacher and debate coach to serve as a South Dakota Senator, Karl E. Mundt, served five terms in the U.S. House before seeking the upper chamber. But notice that, contrary to Grudz's advice, Mundt went straight to federal office, losing his 1936 House run before winning in 1938. Ditto George McGovern, who jumped straight from professor to federal office, with no state-level elected experience. Have things changed since then? How important and necessary is that state-level experience for a federal candidate?

While this statement is not absolute, I incline toward Grudz's suggestion, in that I know I am happier in South Dakota than I am elsewhere, and no one in my household is fond of long separations. But we would have to balance questions of happiness and family with this question: where could I (or candidates like me) serve South Dakota best?

And whether we're talking Pierre or Washington, could South Dakotans stand two, four, or six years of an elected official who can't stand still at the podium? :-D

Game on! Let's get this done, we'll need Cory in South Dakota for a few years to complete some housekeeping issues on corruption.
You know, things like meaningful legislation and laws that have teeth to prevent and penalize corrupt politicians.
I look forward to Susan Wismer taking the Capital for a day to Indian Country when she elected.

Cory, I think you need a little more caffeine or something to get you out of your lethargic torpor. Seriously. (Or not.)

It is heartening for me to see your enthusiasm and that of the attendees at the event and candidates such as Ms. Wismer. I feel more hope for SD now than I have in several years. Thank you to everyone involved. You have my earnest support.

Just finished a telephone poll from the Republican National Committee. They didn't ask about the house race nor mentioned Mike Myers as an option for Governor. Last question asking me if I supported Obamacare.

  13. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.08.25

And Lynn, you said, "Yeeesssss!", right?

  14. Lynn 2014.08.25

I identified as Democrat, chose Weiland and Wismer and yes to Obamacare for the purpose of the poll though outside of the poll I'd like to see Single Payer.
