For more on the Rounds-Daugaard legacy, we turn to Todd Epp, who cites Census figures to report that the number and percentage of South Dakotans receiving public assistance since 2000 has gone up:
In 2000, an estimated 4,078 South Dakotans or 1.4 percent of the population were on public assistance, according to the report, with recipients increasing nearly two a half-fold from 2000 to 2012 [Todd Epp, "South Dakota Sees Increase in Citizens on Public Assistance," Northern Plains News, 2014.09.03].
From 2000 to 2012, the percentage of South Dakotans on public assistance increased by 1.5 percentage points, the percentage of all Americans on public assistance increased only by 0.3 percentage points. In yucky liberal New York and California, the percentage decreased.
The current Governor made a third of that South Dakota jump happen in just one year. From 2011 to 2012, in the first full year of Dennis Daugaard's fiscal austerity and juche, the percentage of South Dakotans on public assistance rose from 2.4% to 2.9%. South Dakota was one of only seven states showing a statistically significant increase in the percentage of citizens on public assistance. Nationally, under Obamanomics, that percentage stayed flat.
Daugaard and Rounds like to take credit for jobs created during their watch; let's hear them take credit for the increasing public assistance recipients.
That's why they don't talk about wages in this state. Daughtry didn't bring it up in Mitchell yesterday when talking about his workforce summit.

That's what happens when they jobs created don't pay a living wage... Sad when someone making $30k a year sees 14% go to federal taxes (medicare/SS included), you know they live paycheck to paycheck so a 4% state sales tax usually coupled with a 2% city sales tax, and by the time you are done adding in all the fuel taxes, property taxes, licensing fees, and user fees (republican word for taxes) for things like cable and internet roughly 30% of their income is gone in taxes. That just turned that individuals $30k into $21k in purchasing power, POOF, they are poor.

Liberty Dick, how does the increase in public assistance recipients under South Dakota's Republican governors have anything to do with federal taxes? That's a non-unique issue. Let's keep the focus squarely on the state-level differences that apparently led to an increase in public assistance in South Dakota during a flatline of such assistance nationwide.
Perhaps the increase is a good thing and shows that our state employees that administer these programs are reaching out and finding more and more folks that need temporary help. I don't like to see providing help to our poor used as a tool to attack any politician.

One thing to always remember is that every single tax and fee increase in this state in the past forty years was done by Republicans.

The poor and the working poor are the subject, the unemployed, the unemployable, those with disabilities, and those with mental disabilities are the most represented in the census figures.
Republicans fail to recognize you can't have it both ways, they complain about people on the public dole and out of the other side of their mouth complain that raising the minimum wage will destroy their economy.
You cannot have a robust economy when citizens don't have any purchasing power.
Very true Roger which goes to show that the republican party in power has no business sense whatsoever. They either get their money from social security or from the farm bill subsidies, so they are clueless in how an actual business is operated. For some unknown reason, republican and democrat business people do not seem to be able to speak reason to these politicos and here we are. They are so worried about the dole they are on that they cannot think that what they are doing actually harms them as well. Kind of like the way they catch monkeys in Africa. Put some food in a gourd that is just big enough for their porker hands and when they grab the loot they cannot get the prize out of there. If not found by the trapper, they will die. I think this is a perfect analogy of the majority party in the South Dakota legislature.
