Betty Olson Incorrigible, Says Folks Protesting Her Racism Lack Sense of Humor

Rep. Betty Olson (R-28B/Prairie City) remains impervious to modern decency. After catching heck for spreading racism, religious bigotry, and birtherism in the local paper, Rep. Olson says we're the jerks for not laughing along with her:

Olson said she was surprised by reaction to her commentary, which she defended this week.

“They saw no humor in my joke,” the 68-year-old legislator said. “My local folks did. I re-posted it on my Facebook page and so far everybody on there has liked it. I do feel bad that so many people don’t have a sense of humor [Tom Griffith, "State Rep. Betty Olson Condemned for 'Joke' about Muslims That Went Viral," Rapid City Journal, 2014.10.08].

Yes, when all your neighbors laugh, it must be o.k. And hey, all is permissible when some of your best friends are married to black people:

Added Olson: “I wasn’t trying to achieve anything. I was just trying to end with a joke like I normally do. Apparently some people didn’t find it funny. As far as being racist, the guy who sent it to me is married to a black lady, so I don’t think racism had anything to do with it” [Griffith, 2014.10.08].

Betty, Betty, Betty. Even if there's no fixing you, could you at least do us the favor of acknowledging that your Neanderthal attitudes make our dear state look really bad, and that we might be better off if you stopped saying such things?

Maybe it's just me,but radical Muslims tend to cut off people's heads to show their sense of humor. Sowingnut Olson, as long as Americans and others are in harms way keep them rads laughing.

  2. Steve Sibson 2014.10.08

Cory you still have not laid out the logic that makes Betty a racist.

  3. David Newquist 2014.10.08

Stupid can't be fixed. It speaks with a loud voice in South Dakota. It is not just people outside the state who think it is a very bad joke.

  4. Steve Sibson 2014.10.08

"Muslims tend to cut off people's heads to show their sense of humor."

So you want to cut of Betty's head? And that would be funny huh?

  5. mike from iowa 2014.10.08

Sibby, you are a F@#$#$ moron!!! I did not say anything like that. I did not imply anything like that. You F#%#$ right wing idiots use your right of free speech to goad the enemy into commiting more barbaric acts so you can say-see,they are barbaric. STFU!!!

  6. JeniW 2014.10.08

Betty's column may have meant to be in jest, but it came across as not funny.

If she had written an article in jest about people with disabilities, I can easily and with confidence bet that the same type of reactions would have taken place.

  7. larry kurtz 2014.10.08

Southern Dakota deserves all the Mrs. Olsons he can stomach.

  8. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.10.08

Steve, Olson's slurs perpetuate the racism-fueled myth that our President is not an American. They impute ill intentions (calling them ISIS agents) to all Muslim Americans, whom she further slurs by ascribing to a narrow set of jobs. She's not joking; she's reinforcing prejudice and xenophobia, which, as I said in the previous post, only plays into the hands of the terrorists who want to convince potential recruits that America hates their race and their religion.

Betty Olson isn't just racist; she's a threat to national security.

  9. Lynn 2014.10.08

It won't be long and South Dakota jokes will be a regular staple on the Jon Stewart Show and late night television. Maybe our SD Tourism Department could capitalize on it with some focused advertising provided via another no bid contract to L & S and broadcast or print in Alabama, Mississippi and others. What would be the slogan?

The background would be with quotes from Jensen, Betty Olson, Hickey with a prominent headline. "Come on up where your among Friends in South Dakota!"

uggg....when racism has to be explained to the likes of Betty Olson and Steve, it is maddening.

Mzzzz Olson feels so confident about her Facebook posting of the very obvious racist "joke" and the support that she received, she has already taken it off of her F/B page. Sigh

  16. Ted 2014.10.08

Betty Olson and her Facebook friends don't seem like good peoples.

  17. Steve Sibson 2014.10.08

mike form iowa, now you know what it is like for us conservatives to be falsely accused of being racists. This cultural Neo-Marxist propaganda that has infiltrated this country has produced a lot of hatred. Why don't you liberals drop it?

  18. Steve Sibson 2014.10.08

"America hates their race and their religion."

Cory, Obama and the Islamists hate white American Christians, and so do you. Like I said, stop with the cultural Neo-Marxism if you want Americans to come together.

  19. larry kurtz 2014.10.08

Sibby the Conciliator: now i've seen everything.

  20. Roger Cornelius 2014.10.08

Betty Olson must be the reason that every time I drive through Belle Fourche, "Dueling Banjos" starts running through my mind

  21. Roger Cornelius 2014.10.08

Sibson, the Betty Olson's of America is the reason terrorist hate American Christians.

  22. mike from iowa 2014.10.08

Sibson, you didn't accuse me of being a racist.

  23. Lynn 2014.10.08

It just amazes me just how uneducated and close minded some of these people are and they are elected officials so there are other like minded South Dakotans that support their views and vote them in. They reinforce negative stereotypes and generalize. Then these idiots don't properly support our education system here in South Dakota which just perpetuates ignorant attitudes.

Ignorant comments from Betty Olson not stir the pot and add to the propaganda militant extremists promote but can hurt our state in other ways too such as recruiting physicians, college professors, business owners and other professionals.

  24. Taunia 2014.10.08

This morning the CIA and the FBI warned Iraq, Syria and Libya that if they continue meddling in US matters, they intend to blame those countries for the crucifixion of Christ, for the Boston Tea Party and for Benghazi. The CIA and FBI will send Sheriff Joe Arapio, Donald Trump, Sarah Palin and Ted Cruz after them in place of their Fox News intelligence.

If this action does not yield sufficient results, the next sacrificial wave will be Pat Robertson, Tony Perkins, Joel Osteen and Mike Huckabee to convince them the Christian Crusades were a bake sale.

Finally, if all fails, the CIA and FBI have threatened not to let Darrell Issa investigate who Pissed on Christ.

    It’s gonna get ugly, people.

  25. Francie 2014.10.08

It's simple. Betty Olson is a racist. And like any self-effacing racist, hides behind an 'oh, I didn't mean it that way' when she gets called on it. It's just one step up from hiding behind a white sheet.

  26. Steve Sibson 2014.10.08

"Betty Olson's of America is the reason terrorist hate American Christians"

So Roger, Betty deserves to have her head taken off? So you Obama liberals agree with the Islamic beheadings? Americans deserve it?

  27. larry kurtz 2014.10.08

    Yeah, Sib: Americans deserve it.

  28. Lynn 2014.10.08

Steve take your hobbyhorse over to the other blog. Come on giddy up horsey. Betty Olson will be supported over there.

  29. Steve Sibson 2014.10.08

So while you Obama supporting Neo-Marxists falsely attack conservatives, here is the real reason Islamists behead Americans:

A video has surfaced which shows the Islamic State (IS) blaming President Obama for the alleged beheading of Steven Sotloff. In the video, the militant says he is back as an executioner due to Obama’s arrogance regarding foreign policy towards IS.

  30. larry kurtz 2014.10.08

Suspect Mossad and IDF. I don't falsely attack so-called conservatives, Sib: i eat them for breakfast

  31. Roger Cornelius 2014.10.08

Just how obtuse are you Sibson, I said no such thing, those are your words and beliefs about beheading Betty Olson.
Quit trying to translate others opinions, it just doesn't work

  32. Eugene 2014.10.08

I am reposting the comments I added to the original Betty Olson story for Roger Cornelius and others who have the same opinion of Belle Fourche and Butte County. Lots of us in Belle are embarrassed by Ms Olson and the opinions she shares with the community. Please don't paint all of us to be like her and her "Friends" She is no friend of mine. Here are my previous comments:

Folks should be aware that Betty Olson's column appears regularly in the Butte County Post, which is a weekly publication printed and supported by the Rapid City Journal.

The Butte County Post runs Belle Fourche news, however it is widely regarded as a joke. The BCPost staff refuse to run hard news and prefer to use regular columns written by elderly residents for their mostly elderly readers. They prefer to run lots of rodeo coverage and Senior Citizen news. While this is not a bad thing, the rest of the town prefers to not have to pay for and read about endless horse and AARP stories.

Belle Fourche is a bedroom community whose residents most often work someplace else, Spearfish, Deadwood, Rapid, WY, and ND. The folks who commute from Belle Fourche stopped paying attention to the BCPost long ago. The Black Hills Pioneer does a much better job of covering real local issues, and not depending on dated, antiquated views of folks who think the sun rises and sets at the Roundup Rodeo grounds. While there is a significant racist, old fashioned segment of the Belle Fourche population, the rest of us just ignore them and prefer to live in the present, instead of living in the past.

Belle Fourche residents have long been frustrated by this type of coverage in their local paper, but we gave up long ago. The Butte County Post is in dire need of REAL reporters, and not just folks trying to sell advertising for their owner, the struggling Lee Enterprises.

  33. Roger Cornelius 2014.10.08

    Eugene,
Please accept my apology for categorizing you and like minded thinkers along with the Betty Olson's of your area.
You are right about Belle, I lived there for about a year sometime back and being the Indian that I am never felt or was welcomed in the community. I hope you understand that.
    Thanks Eugene

  34. Troy 2014.10.08

I have never taken serious the birther or Obama is a Muslim charge. I've always accepted and believed that Obama was born in Hawaii and is a member of a Christian church. I also think the charges were a net political benefit to Obama so on top of being false, they were not good politics. (Telling lies should never be good politics).

Anyway, because these issues have been in the news, I've seen some funny jokes about both issues and laughed. Just as some of you have laughed as similarly jokes about Bush (I've probably laughed at them too.) Sometimes we just take ourselves, our politics, etc. too seriously (or at least don't allow humor to take some of the edge off).

That said, I don't think this is one of those funny jokes. There is nothing funny about ISIS, beheadings, and what is going on there. Just as there wasn't anything funny when Democrats incorporated 9-11, Hussein and bin Laden into jokes about Bush.

Jokes that use stereotypes don't always reinforce stereotypes but show how ludicrous they are. And they sometimes do reinforce stereotypes. The best humor often pushes the line. Bad humor goes over the line. And we all make mistakes whether they are funny or inappropriate.

Whether it be Joe Biden or Betty Olson, politicians who go over the line get lambasted in my mind excessively but that doesn't mean they don't deserve some admonition. They are leaders so the standard is higher.

A liberal and I might exchange a joke privately that maybe goes over the line and we can talk about it, admit it went over the line or admit it was actually funny, and move on. Politicians need to be more careful and when they cross the line, they should just admit it. Crossing a line and learning from it serves everyone more than never allowing humor to be part of our lives.

  37. larry kurtz 2014.10.08

  38. Steve Sibson 2014.10.08

"Quit trying to translate others opinions"

That is exactly what Cory and many of the rest of you is doing to Betty. Stop it. This gets us no where.

  39. larry kurtz 2014.10.08

Ever hear the phrase: "shot across the bow," Sibby?

  40. Steve Sibson 2014.10.08

A woman beheaded by a Muslim from this very congregation was buried by her grieving family just one day before this special messenger was sent, and Obama chose to give thanks and praise to this mosque?

When you care nothing about optics and you are on record as saying, “The future should not belong to those who slander the prophet of Islam,” perhaps this should come as no surprise.

    http://www.tpnn.com/2014/10/06/obama-praises-the-mosque-of-the-oklahoma-beheader-yes-he-did/

  41. larry kurtz 2014.10.08

Timothy McVeigh was a christian, Sibby.

  42. lesliengland 2014.10.08

so sibby, are you s birther or an "Obama is a muslim"? as a wise sage once said-pick a lane, buddy. btw, troy says he will not share either with you.

isn't this getting tiresome? Obama does not support militant Islamism, despite what your GOP spins, and spins.

  43. Steve Sibson 2014.10.08

Actually Leslie, Obama could be all of those things, and also a Neo-Con who wants to keep the economy going by blowing the hell out of crap overseas.

  44. JeniW 2014.10.08

People in the U.S. are still being executed, and there are those who take delight in that happening. The executions being done in the U.S. are not done with beheading, they are being done with giving lethal dosage of drugs, or electrocuted, but they are just as dead as those who are beheaded.

How can we expect people in other countries not to execute people, when the U.S. continues to execute people?

When executions end in the U.S., then we can more rightfully be outraged by the executions taking place in other countries. Right now, the outrage of the beheading taking place in other countries makes us look like hypocrites.

  45. Steve Sibson 2014.10.08

Right JeniW, Americans deserve to be beheaded, just because we are Americans. And you are not joking, right?

  46. JeniW 2014.10.08

I knew you would come back with something like that...

No, they do not deserve to be executed, it is horrible that it happens, and I wish it did not happen, but those who are beheading people probably feel as "justified" as to what they are doing as we do we execute people.

    U

  47. larry kurtz 2014.10.08

    I said that, Sibby.

  48. JeniW 2014.10.08

The "U" in my comment was an accident... no meaning to it.

  49. JeniW 2014.10.08

BTW, is Betty on favor of the U.S. executing people?

  50. larry kurtz 2014.10.08

Good eye, Jeni. $20 says Betty supports the beheading for crimes against the state.

  51. bearcreekbat 2014.10.08

I agree with what JenW said, but not with Sibby's attempt to revise her statement. And to make things worse, we even have a Supreme Court Justice - Scalia - who is on record stating that our Constitution does not prohibit the execution of a person found to be innocent of the crime he or she is about to be executed for committing.

    http://www.businessinsider.com.au/antonin-scalia-says-executing-the-innocent-is-constitutional-2014-9

    http://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/08pdf/08-1443scalia.pdf

Personally I disagree with Scalia and do not think the USA should be executing anyone, including innocent people. But as JenW recognizes, the contrary path our leaders have chosen for us puts the USA squarely in the camp of the small minority of nations that allow beheading or any other types of executions, which includes Iran and the United Arab Emirates.

And Sibby you never did answer me about what you think "God's wrath" will be. I need to know your view on this before I can give an opinion on whether beheading someone is worse than "God's wrath" on that person. From what I have read in the Bible, it appears to me "God's wrath" is much crueler than beheading, but you might have a different take on "God's wrath" as you often seem to write that the Bible means something different than other readers conclude.

  52. Steve Sibson 2014.10.08

JeniW, what I am against is killing Muslims just because they are Muslims. Those executed in America had due process, but sadly those executed in abortion mills don't get due process. The Americans that are beheaded by Islamists also don't get due process. So looks like you liberals have a lot in common with the terrorists.

  53. bearcreekbat 2014.10.08

And Sibby, I do not recall any "due process" either mentioned or given in the Bible before God imposed his wrath on human beings.

  54. Steve Sibson 2014.10.08

BCB, “The court has never found a constitutional right for the actually innocent to be free from execution.” ...the Supreme Court has never ruled whether an individual’s ‘actual innocence’ necessitates the involvement of a federal court in a state conviction.”

That is different from saying "our Constitution does not prohibit the execution of a person found to be innocent of the crime he or she is about to be executed for committing."

And you will not get me to judge God.

  55. larry kurtz 2014.10.08

    abortion mills: drink!

  56. bearcreekbat 2014.10.08

Sibby, you were the one who brought up the question of whether beheading is worse than "God's wrath" in a different thread. I would never ask you to judge God, but I would be willing to give you the opinion you requested on whether "God's wrath" is worse than beheading if you want to share with me what you think "God's wrath" would be, if it is different than that described in the Bible.

As for your Constitutional contention, as with Scalia's, I think what you mean is that all the Constitution requires is "due process" and even if that only consists of a kangaroo State Court proceeding, or even one done in good faith but with a mistaken verdict, then later proof of actual innocence may be ignored by the federal courts that Congress has trusted to review state court convictions under habeas corpus. I would think you might consider wideing your definition of "due process" to include actual innocence, but since God does not grant due process at all before inflicting his wrath, I can understand why honest and strong believers like you and Scalia would have a more narrow view of due process, and fully support the execution of fellow human beings, whether innocent or not.

  57. JeniW 2014.10.08

Oh Steve S, you are so funny.

You just confirmed that the U.S. has established a justification for executing people. People in other countries have established their justifications. The only difference is that we do not like their justification, but some people like our justifications.

  58. Steve Sibson 2014.10.08

I don't believe, and I would guess Scalia would not argue, that a kangaroo Court (which is more than those killed in abortion mills get) constitutes due process.

  59. Roger Cornelius 2014.10.08

    Wow!
Sibson is now citing Breitbart as a source, that speaks volumes Steve. Breitbart is less credible than FOX "News".

Well, at least we now know where he gets his twisted and perverted thinking.

  60. Steve Sibson 2014.10.08

JeniW, so what crimes did those Americans commit that justified their beheadings?

  61. Steve Sibson 2014.10.08

And speaking of Kangaroo Courts, the judgment made by this thread against Betty Olson provides an example.

  62. larry kurtz 2014.10.08

Washington Times = Breitbart: Sib, you got nuthin' but spitballs. Betty Olson is a Bundy Ranch welfare queen.

  63. bearcreekbat 2014.10.08

Well Sibby, the two teenagers that spent 30 years on death row in North Carolina for a murder they did not commit appear to have been convicted in a North Carolina kangaroo court proceeding. They were two mentally deficient young people who were tricked into signing false, and later recanted before trial, confessions by lies about what the other had said and fake promises of being released if they confessed. One defendant was found to have an IQ between 60 and 69 and the mental age of a 9-year old, and read at a second grade level. DNA from the crime scene finally exonerated both men.

Scalia referenced these two men in an earlier opinion in which he voted to uphold a death penalty.

    http://www.dailykos.com/story/2014/09/03/1326746/-Scalia-cited-now-exonerated-man-as-reason-to-support-the-death-penalty

As a side note, it is reported that "The two young defendants were prosecuted by Joe Freeman Britt, the 6-foot-6, Bible-quoting district attorney who was later profiled by “60 Minutes” as the country’s “deadliest D.A.” because he sought the death penalty so often."

    http://www.nytimes.com/2014/09/03/us/2-convicted-in-1983-north-carolina-murder-freed-after-dna-tests.html?_r=0

  64. JeniW 2014.10.08

Steve, I do not know what crimes that the Americans who were executed committed.

All I am saying is that those who beheaded/executed the Americans must have felt that they were justified in doing so, just as the U.S. has justified executing people.

There are people in the U.S. who have felt they were justified in killing someone, or a group of people.

Do you not think that people in other countries might be outraged by the legal and illegal executions that take place on our soil, and wonder about how all the killings are justified?

    Are we really any better?

I wish Americans who do not really need to be in other countries, would not be there. They place themselves in harms way, and for what?

  65. mike from iowa 2014.10.08

The case against the men, always weak, fell apart after DNA evidence implicated another man whose possible involvement had been somehow overlooked by the authorities even though he lived only a block from where the victim’s body was found, and he had admitted to committing a similar rape and murder around the same time.

I hate when evidence is somehow overlooked. Makes the defendents look silly, don't it?

  66. mike from iowa 2014.10.08

The constitution requires due process. Scalia, otoh, does not. Scalia did not have a problem with lawyers who sleep through death penalty cases. Sleeping, apparently is not incompetence.

  67. bearcreekbat 2014.10.08

mike - wow! thanks for the link. Perhaps Breitbart is not all that trustworthy as a source of information.

  68. lesliengland 2014.10.08

    sib did it again. dnftt

  69. Roger Cornelius 2014.10.08

Sibson's links to Breitbart and NYTimes suggest he thinks that twice elected President Obama is a Muslim.

Well guess what Sibson, it doesn't matter if he should happen to be a Christian. There is absolutely no Constitutional requirement that a president have any religious or Christian affiliation what so ever.

The president is a natural born Christian citizen, the Orley Taitz argument didn't work in 2008 or 2012, and they don't work today.

  70. mike from iowa 2014.10.08

bcb-I think Breitbart selectively edits copy as well as videos.

  71. Deb Geelsdottir 2014.10.08

Back to Betty Olson. And also Eugene's comment.

I lived in Newell, and served Immanuel Lutheran Church, north of Mud Butte. The church is very near the junction of Harding, Perkins and Meade counties. I had members from all three. I remember laughing with the folks when we realized we'd all shared Thanksgiving dinner with Indians. The Indians were our friends and relatives.

I kind of digressed there, sorry. My point is that in my personal experience, the ratio of wonderful people to racist bigots was 70/1, give or take a few.

Eugene is right. Lots of good people there. I can't imagine why they elect Betty. I'm sure she has good qualities, but they don't outweigh her hurtful bigotry and ignorance.

  72. Jane Smith 2014.10.08

Sometimes attention deprived small minded people say ridiculous things in an attempt to garner attention. I will not directly address the unfortunate uneducated moron with a reply other than this. Freedom of speech does not mean you can slander others, deface their faith, nor spew words you have no understanding of. Also there is a confucisious saying, words are like water, once spilled, it cannot put back.
Also, another is your words represent your intelligence, choose wisely, or risk looking like a fool.

  73. Jane Smith 2014.10.08

77 responses in an effort to do the impossible, such as educate a grown man who has displayed hopeless retarded rhetoric is really disturbing.

  74. Ted 2014.10.09

I like that Troy wants credit for not being a maniac.

"I have never taken serious the birther or Obama is a Muslim charge. I've always accepted and believed that Obama was born in Hawaii and is a member of a Christian church."

Someone give this man a medal!

  75. Lynn 2014.10.09

    Ted,

He states that repeatedly. Either give him a medal or a cookie and send him on his way.

  76. Bill Fleming 2014.10.09

I won't give Troy a medal, but I do appreciate his willingness to differentiate himself from the unreasonable fanatics in his party! and for showing up here on a political blog to attempt to participate in reasoned discourse in what is oftentimes a hostile environment. We all need to stay open to the possibility of finding common ground with those who oppose us, as well as learning what it really is that accounts for the differences in our philosophies and priorities.

  77. Steve Sibson 2014.10.09

"Sibson's links to Breitbart and NYTimes suggest he thinks that twice elected President Obama is a Muslim."

Who was it on this thread that was upset with folks that fabricated what another's opinion is? And I used a question mark, so I was only asking for clarification. So to answer your non-question, I believe Obama is a Muslim sympathizer. And based on his own words and his involvement with Liberation Theology, he is not a Biblical Christian, so I see how Deb could support him. And she has also made statements that were bigoted toward "white men".

And Jane, you are probably too closed minded to understand that you are closed minded.

  78. Steve Sibson 2014.10.09

" We all need to stay open to the possibility of finding common ground with those who oppose us"

The liberals of the GOP do have common ground with you Democrats, it is called big government.

  79. Bill Fleming 2014.10.09

Steve, I like to believe it's a continuation of Abraham Lincoln's hope that 'government of the people, by the people and for the people shall not parish from the earth.'

I think that hope is and has always been the American's common ground... A more perfect union.

  80. Troy 2014.10.09

    Bill,

I don't want a medal from you. I want to eat your steak and drink your beer. :)

I'm neither distancing myself from Olson's politics or embracing it. This is about humor which in my opinion shouldn't take too seriously whether the bad joke is told by Biden or Olson. The really funny humor gets right up to the line but doesn't cross it. Cross it and the laughs become a groan. If your in the public eye, expect to get admonished for it but I don't think it deserves castigation.

By the way, did you hear about the Democrat who found a bottle, rubbed it and a genie came out. The genie, in gratitude for liberation from the bottle, promised to grant one request. The Democrat said "Make me smarter." The genie made the Democrat a Republican.

Okay, magic joke time. Did you hear the one about the Republican moderate who went to the palm reader? He took one look at the Repubs hand and started laughing uncontrollably. So the Republican punched him in the nose...
    ...Wait for it....
... because his mother always told him to strike a happy medium.

    Bill,

I tried to post a response and was told it was spam. LOL

In it I said (trying to be funny) that you are sick for having a joke that makes fun of a man's hand which must be deformed, making fun of a guy who has mommy issues, and implying since you used the masculine that you think it is ok to hit women. But, I did admit it was funny.

  83. Bill Fleming 2014.10.09

Lol, and here I thought the funniest part was the implication there was such a thing as a Republican moderate!

"I thought the funniest part was the implication there was such a thing as a Republican moderate"

Your are right Bill, there is no such a thing. They are more correctly referred to as liberals and/or RINOs.
