I can only take so much Betty Olson. That's why I missed Republican Representative's September 9 column. Rep. Olson, who is seeking to switch from House to Senate for District 28, reaches far above her pay grade and tries to talk foreign policy. She chants some thoughtless slogans about the so-called "Islamic State" terrorists (press her for a real solution, and I'm sure she'll prescribe requiring every American to carry a gun). She then tells a racist joke... which the Rapid City Journal has the poor taste not to reject:
A second American journalist, Steven Sotloff, was beheaded by ISIS this week. The terrorist group has taken over most of Iraq and formed an Islamic State. ISIS still has more Americans in its blood-stained hands and is willing to butcher more innocents in the name of its perverted cause. The world can no longer turn a blind eye. Whether or not the Commander-in-Chief leaves these terrorists alone, it is high time that a strategy is formed to defeat them.
On a lighter note, Dave Kurth sent me a copy of the threat the Islamic terrorists released before they started beheading Americans:
This morning ISIS and the Muslim Brotherhood warned the United States that if the United States continued meddling in Iraq, Libya, and other potential hot spots in the Middle East, they intend to cut off America's supply of 7-11 and Motel 6 managers.
If this action does not yield sufficient results, cab drivers will be next, followed by Dell, AT&T and AOL customer service reps.
Finally, if all else fails, they have threatened not to send us any more presidents either.

Rep. Olson's birther outburst is bringing South Dakota more embarrassment in the national press. But I have a bad feeling that such press will only reinforce Olson's hatefulness.

Owen, apologizing comes from the realization that he/she said or did something offensive(wrong) and requires a bit of self reflection. My hope is a sincere apology will come, my reality is some will never admit they did anything wrong.

There seems to be a lack of a filter that runs through the GOP...of course that can probably be directly attached to the overabundance of narcissism that drives their very being.
I sincerely doubt that ISIS reads or cares what dingbat wingnuts have to say,but is it really necessary for these people,whose children probably will never be put in harms way to beat a hornet's nest with sticks? We have enough problems with these people w/o two bit pols attempting to stir up more troubles.

Charlie Hoffman is the typical South Dakota Republican I talk about, his white privilege dominates his life and his politics.
Betty is too damn dumb to come up with that crap herself. She got it from ALEC. Because we taxpayers pay for those junkets, we support what she says. Betty needs the attention or a boyfriend or a girlfriend, but it is clear, she is lonesome. Maybe Hoffman could come give her a snuggle and giggle all night long.
Jana, yes, Betty Olson does have a challenger, Democrat Oren L. Lesmeister from Parade. The campaign platform I can discern from his Facebook page: "Who thinks we need more cowboys in the Senate?" He also has a killer mustache. I see no birther jokes, but I'll keep looking for them and for policy positions.

Roger I am one but we are many who hope and Pray our defenses stop any future terrorist attack on our soil. I also have stated numerous times that taking out Saddam put into play not only the Obama presidency but ISIS as well. (It was so undeniably certain, 41 even said so!) We own this pig now.
Yet South Dakota is attacked every day by industrial agriculture killing millions from cancer and causing countless spontaneous abortions every year.
Folks should be aware that Betty Olson's column appears regularly in the Butte County Post, which is a weekly publication printed and supported by the Rapid City Journal.
The Butte County Post runs Belle Fourche News, however it is widely regarded as a joke. The BCPost staff refuse to run hard news and prefer to use regular columns written by elderly residents for their mostly elderly readers. They prefer to run lots of rodeo coverage and Senior Citizen news. While this is not a bad thing, the rest of the town prefers to not have to pay and read about endless horse and AARP stories.
Belle Fourche is a bedroom community whose residents most often work someplace else, Spearfish, Deadwood, Rapid, WY, and ND. The folks who commute from Belle Fourche stopped paying attention to the BCPost long ago. The Black Hills Pioneer does a much better job of covering real local issues, and not depending on dated, antiquated views of folks who think the sun rises and sets at the Roundup Rodeo grounds. While there is a significant racist, old fashioned segment of the Belle Fourche population, the rest of us just ignore them and prefer to live in the present, instead of living in the past.
Belle Fourche residents have long been frustrated by the type of coverage in their local paper, but we gave up long ago. The Butte County Post is in dire need of REAL reporters, and not just folks trying to sell advertising for their owner, the struggling Lee Enterprises.
