“Bill Clay” Identity Remains Mild Mystery to SD Blogosphere Readers

The latest Madville Times poll reminds me of an important principle of blogging: bloggers are not the story. I asked readers "Who Is Dakota War College's 'Bill Clay'?" and found just 63 of you interested enough in the pseudonymous blogger's identity to respond, about half the responses I've received with polls on the February Madison school bond election and school board and about a third of my most popular poll this year on the Legislature's performance.

That said, here's what you said about the identity of "Bill Clay":

Who Is Dakota War College's "Bill Clay"?

  • someone else! (40%, 25 Votes)
  • Pat Powers (27%, 17 Votes)
  • Tony Post (13%, 8 Votes)
  • Noem staffer (11%, 7 Votes)
  • Thune staffer (9%, 6 Votes)

My theory that it's SDGOP exec Tony Post finds little support among my curious readers. The most likely specific culprit is DWC founder and owner Pat Powers. The majority, though, hold that the real writer (or writers) of the current drumbeat of DWC doggerel is some other nameless tool of the GOP establishment.

The identity of this author of mostly forgettable conservative tripe a matter of minor curiosity to us happy 1% of South Dakotans who pay attention to the blogosphere. But we'll keep our forensic authorship analysis tools at the ready!
