Rep. Kristi Noem to Make Random Stops at Mitchell Coffee Shops

Hey, Mitchell voters! Are you eager to talk to Rep. Kristi Noem about her job performance so far? Well boy, howdy, she's looking forward to talking to you Thursday! Not eager enough, however, to tell you exactly where you can catch her:

The [press] release said Noem, who is up for re-election this year, will visit "Mitchell coffee shops" beginning at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, and will tour the Boyds' Gunstock plant near Mitchell at 1:45 p.m. Thursday [staff, "Noem to Visit Mitchell on Thursday," Mitchell Daily Republic, 2012.01.04].

I guess you can try to stake Noem out at the gunstock plant, though heaven knows if you're hanging around private property like that, someone might mistake you for Occupy Mitchell and start singing Lee Greenwood at you. So instead, you should do the sensible thing and drive around all the places that sell coffee in Mitchell from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. hoping to spot a lady with cowboy boots getting out of an SUV with Hamlin County (#32!) license plates.

But we should be grateful for even this much notice from our incumbent Princess. She hasn't posted any notice of a public meeting on her official website since August 30. It's almost as if she doesn't want to have people show up to ask her questions about her vote to raise your taxes by $1000....

Meanwhile, one Democrat who wants Noem's job, Matt Varilek, says his campaign raised over $103,000 in December.

Perhaps KN plans on getting her coffee at the drive thru.

  2. mike 2012.01.05

    Charlie,

    That is funny!!!

  3. mike 2012.01.05

    Cory,

I love the "princess" reference! "random coffee shops" is that for real?

Noem is totally capable of doing a better job serving her constituents than she is doing.

    Noem: Mitchell Incumbent Looking Forward?

  5. owen 2012.01.05

just found out she'll be at Casfe Tereasa

  6. caheidelberger Post author | 2012.01.05

Cafe Teresa at 312 N. Main? Good local scoop, Owen! Got a time on her arrival? Take you camera! I welcome any and all photos, videos, and other reports from Noem's open meetings!

  7. owen 2012.01.05

11:30 Corey. If I can get out of work I'll be there

  8. Steve Sibson 2012.01.05

owen who? I would like to warn them of the infiltration of haters.

  9. troy jones 2012.01.05

Cory: "It’s almost as if she doesn’t want to have people show up to ask her questions about her vote to raise your taxes by $1000…."

This is wholly inaccurate. Noem's position was a one year extention which results in an average reduction in SS contribution of $1,000. The two month extention only translates into an $165 reduction.

I get your opposition to KN is visceral but you do have an obligation to have your facts straight.

[CAH: Au contraire, Troy. My opposition is visceral, principled, and factual. The above comment accurately portrays the practical impact of her vote. Had her vote stuck, had she not flip-flopped at Boehner's orders, her vote would have raised darn near everyone's taxes $1000. She was willing to let that happen rather than accept the compromise that her party had extracted from the Senate and President in the first place when the GOP wouldn't accept a one-year extension.]

  10. owen 2012.01.05

she's my Rep to Steve. I can't go and ask her questions?

  11. Steve Sibson 2012.01.05

own, I did not say you can't go.

  12. Bill Fleming 2012.01.05

I think we should warn Kristi that Sibby is trying to meddle with her relationship with her constituents. The last thing she needs is to have her name connected with his... oh wait... what am I thinking?

Um... go ahead, Sibby, call her up... right away. Tell her a whole bunch of Masons, Mormans and unicorn-riding, new-age Kights Templetons are coming to join her for coffee, so she should be sure to have her crucifix and silver bullets handy.

You should text her right away about this, Sib. And be sure to mention the name "Owen." It's probably a secret, marxist code name anyways. Or a NWO password or something.

    Sound that trumpet, big fella.

  13. Steve Sibson 2012.01.05

Bill, so that is why owen's identity needs to be "secret".

  14. Bill Fleming 2012.01.05

Yes, absolutely Sibby. It's a Skull & Bones thing. If we told you Owen's name we'd have to duct tape your glasses to your head.

  15. Steve Sibson 2012.01.05

So owen Fleming says you are a Masonic Mason, what say you? Where in the bones with either of the two Bushs? Or John Kerry?

  16. Owen Reitzel 2012.01.05

ok, ok. No secrets. Even though I didn't want Homeland Security after me. Sibby, my name is Owen Reitzel. I'm originally from Madison and my dad taught Corey when he was in high school. Like my dad I'm a proud liberal. I was able to talk to Kristi today and had a very nice conversation with her. Unlike the Teabaggers I can have a civil conversation with someone I disagree with on almost every subject. And Sibby I've read your letters to the editor in the Mitchell Daily Republic over the years and I want to thank you on re-enforcing my liberal beliefs.

  17. mike 2012.01.05

How did you find out the time and place Owen? And why didn't it just go into the paper originally?

  18. Steve Sibson 2012.01.05

"Unlike the Teabaggers I can have a civil conversation with someone I disagree with on almost every subject."

The liberals and Kristi are on the same side...Big Government plus Big Business. So the word "liberal" is not the correct label for your movement...fascism is. You guys are helping out the very monopoly capitalist that you complain about. Very sad.

  19. Owen Reitzel 2012.01.05

Mike, The paper had the time last night and the radio station had the place this morning. Sibby, you haven't changed.

[CAH: Wait a minute. So to figure out where to meet your Congresswoman, you had to piece together reports from two different media outlets? Owen, you really shouldn't have to work that hard.]

  20. Bill Fleming 2012.01.05

Owen, thanks for letting me have a little fun with your name. As we both know, Sibby as about five french fries short of a Happy Meal. And he has a hard time with irony and satire. I think they give him hives.

  21. mike 2012.01.05

Looks like the real question is why does Noem's staff feel the need to play games with constituents. "We'll put the plan in the paper and then we'll put the time on the radio." "Don't expect to look in one place for all the information."

The Dakota War Toilet had a posting of State Senator Todd Schlekeway's public meetings where he posted his 4 DATES, TIMES and LOCATION all in one place on one mailing. Like he wanted people to be able to plan to attend. Noem refuses to hold public meetings where anyone with real problems can attend. This is a totall disgrace of constituents.

Noem and her staff (AKA Josh Shields) is a bunch of screw ups.

  22. Owen Reitzel 2012.01.05

I agree Mike on the public meetings. the only reason I was able to go to this was because we are slow at work and I got the time off. There were not many people there and the ones who were there were supporters.

  23. Owen Reitzel 2012.01.05

    no problem Bill.

  24. caheidelberger Post author | 2012.01.05

I wonder: did her supporters get special notice?

  25. Jana 2012.01.05

Remember how great the town halls were during the health care debate? Do you remember who was leading the charge to disrupt those constituent meetings? The tea party. Remember the memo they sent out?

    http://talkingpointsmemo.com/documents/2009/08/memo-details-co-ordinated-anti-reform-harrassment-strategy.php?page=1

Remember how Kristi used the Tea Party to get elected?

Well, those tactics were crap then and they are crap now. Those tactics have done more to set back democracy than anything else since Joseph McCarthy.

Funny that those same tactics have intimidated Kristi from being open with her constituents.

    Here's a better idea...ask great questions!

The one thing that people like Kristi fear more is insightful questions. After she gets done talking platitudes, ask her what the intended and unintended consequences would be. The one thing that shows how poorly we have been represented is to have her justify her last year in Congress.

Here's a primer on how to ask great questions:

    http://faculty.gvc.edu/ssnyder/121/Goodquestions.html (ht to gadgetopia.com)

So does anybody have suggestions on great questions to ask?

  26. Owen Reitzel 2012.01.05

I don't know about special notice Corey. there just wasn't very many people there. the few that were there said hi. A lady that works for Noem actually came up to me and ask if I wangted to talk to Kristi. I said sure. (with a smile).

  27. caheidelberger Post author | 2012.01.05

"just wasn't very many people there"—we appear to be making Mike's point, that Noem's staff are bumblers. If I'm a Congressman, and I'm back in South Dakota for a visit at the beginning of an election year, I make sure every public appearance I make gives me the chance to shake hands with as many voters as I can, to look 'em in the eye, listen to their concerns, ask a question or two, clap 'em on the shoulder, and say, "I'll keep bustin' my chops for you. I hope you'll keep me on the job." Those people head back to the office or home or the blogs and say, "Hey, he's a real guy. He listened to me." If I'm in a cafe where there just aren't many people, my staff has failed me and wasted my time.

  28. Owen Reitzel 2012.01.05

Your right Corey. Can't announce it at night and not name the meeting place until the morning your coming. Not many people will show up. Remember Tom Daschle? He went to every county every year. He would come to Joe's Cafe in Alexandria and just talk to people. no speeches-he just listened. Thanks to the teabaggers those days seem to be gone.

  29. caheidelberger Post author | 2012.01.05

Poop on Teabaggers. Leaders aren't afraid of the opposition showing up; they're ready to hear them out, ask them questions (à la Jana above!), engage them in conversation, and win them over with better ideas.

  30. Owen Reitzel 2012.01.05

How true Corey. Thats why when I talked to her I did so respectfully. Otherwise you just get into trouble. Winning her over would be tough lol

  31. mike 2012.01.05

Did the lady with Noem have short blond hair (I think that's Watertown) or reddish brown hair (runs the Sioux Falls office)? The lady who runs the Sioux Falls office has actually always been really nice an competent and seems like a genuine person. The others I've met tend to be uninterested if you don't have the same position on issues as Noem.

I find it offensive that Noem (who I voted for sadly) won't hold public meetings now that she is in office. I don't expect anyone to be rude to her and I would condemn it. What I want is to be able to ask a question about the issues. Voters are passionate but we shouldn't be rude and being passionate and having a different opinion shouldn't be seen as rude.

  32. mike 2012.01.05

Noem is not anywhere near the person Thune is. I talk to Thune whenever I see him about. He's usually the last person to leave a room. I don't get the issue Noem has with visiting people. I couldn't speak to Daschle but I've heard that about him before. (Johnson post brain injury hasn't been accessable either - but maybe he can't)

  33. Steve Sibson 2012.01.06

"And he has a hard time with irony and satire."

Bill, I have a hard time with deception.

Owen, I see you made the Mitchell paper this morning. Wondering if you ever heard about the sin of coveting?

  34. Steve Sibson 2012.01.06

"So does anybody have suggestions on great questions to ask?"

Wondering if you ever heard about the sin of coveting?

  35. larry kurtz 2012.01.06

Good eye, Steve: i covet your neighbors' wives if they look like Rep. Noem. Chewing my arm off the next morning would be my second hardest part....

  36. Bill Fleming 2012.01.06

"Bill, I have a hard time with deception." Then you would be a terrible football player, Sibby. Soldier and hunter too. Or comedian, for that matter. What do you know how to do, Sib?

  37. Steve Sibson 2012.01.06

Bill, my freezer contains a large amoung of venison. So stop with the deceptions.

I hope your car insurance rates didn't go up too much. :) (Sorry, I couldn't resist)

  41. Owen Reitzel 2012.01.06

"Owen, I see you made the Mitchell paper this morning. Wondering if you ever heard about the sin of coveting?"

I don't know where that came from Steve but if you don't "covet" her your gay!

  42. Steve Sibson 2012.01.06

Owen, I am talking about coveting other people's property to cover your health care costs. Not suprised the Marxist left would not think about that kind of coveting and instead focus on sexual immorality.

  43. larry kurtz 2012.01.06

Who me, Stevie? I flaunt the smashing of all the Commandments especially the 'kill' one: killing time is the one i shalt do best.

You're a weirdo, Sibby: meet me around back for a quickie?

  44. Owen Reitzel 2012.01.06

Well I'll be Steve. a right winger that knows about sex. I'll be. Health care for everybody isn't coveting anything. it's the right for people to be treated by the best health care system in the world regardless of income. People shouldn't have to chose between life and death.

  45. Steve Sibson 2012.01.09

"People shouldn’t have to chose between life and death."

Just as long as you don't have to pay for it, right Owen? Explain how that is not coveting?

  46. caheidelberger Post author | 2012.01.09

Owen isn't coveting. He's willing to pay for it with his taxes. So am I. So should be everyone else who cannot afford modern health care by himself or herself but who, through national collective effort, can ensure that no American is left facing the choice Owen decries.
