Burg, Munsterman File Petitions Friday, Not Yet on Offical Candidate List

Last updated on 2012.03.26

As I look over the Secretary of State's online list of certified candidates for the South Dakota primary and Secretary Gant's Twitter feed, I notice one discrepancy. On Friday, Secretary Gant tweeted his office's receipt of petitions from nine candidates for Legislature:

  1. Quinten Burg, Dem, District 20 Senate, Wessington Springs
  2. Blaine "Chip" Campbell, GOP, Dist. 35 House, Rapid City
  3. James Schorzman, Dem, Dist. 20 House, Mitchell
  4. Mark Kirkeby, GOP, Dist. 35 Senate, Rapid City
  5. Mike Stevens, GOP, Dist. 18 House, Yankton
  6. Lance Russell, GOP, Dist. 30 House, Hot Springs
  7. Gary Coe, GOP, Dist. 31 House, Lead
  8. Lee Qualm, GOP, Dist. 21 House, Platte
  9. Scott Munsterman, GOP, Dist. 7 House, Brookings

The first announcement, Burg's, came at 7:30 a.m. Friday. The next seven announcements came between 8:39 a.m. and 8:45 a.m. The ninth, Munsterman's, came at 2:17 p.m.

The official candidates list shows Campbell through Qualm. It does not show Burg. It does not show Munsterman.

Now maybe it takes Secretary Gant's office more than an afternoon to verify petitions. That's fine: it's a busy time of year in the Secretary's office, and we want this work done right. But Qualm, Coe, and the others were on the list by day's end. Burg and Munsterman were not.

Quinten, Scott, you might want to call Pierre tomorrow morning and make sure your paperwork didn't get buried under a pile of Pat Powers's Santorum pamphlets. You might also want to clear your Monday calendar to run another set of petitions around town.

Update 2012.03.26 06:39 MDT: Someone kicked the jukebox: Burg and Munsterman are now on the list! Good work, fellas!
