Hey! How about some color with your coffee?
Common Grounds in Spearfish has graciously invited me to display some of my paintings for their caffeinated customers this month.
The back nook has room for a combination of my older paintings and some works fresh out of the paint can (don't worry—they're dry!).
Remind the artist to move the chair six inches north next time he takes pictures... or come pull up a chair and take a look yourself! See these paintings and more all through April at Common Grounds, 111 East Hudson Street, a stone's throw from the new stoplights on Main here in Spearfish. Coffee's on Monday through Friday, 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday 6 to 6, and Sunday 6 to 5. Enjoy!
Very nice Cory. I really like the top one.
Nice. The bottom trio rocks. I see the local Indian art in some of them. How about a better photo of "Near Witness" sometime. And congrats for the public display!
Thank you, Mike and Taunia! "Near Witness" is sitting right across from the back door, and the afternoon sun made it hard to get a good picture. I need to drop by some morning and get a picture without the glare.
Looks like the supervolcano hasn't gone off yet, huh?
Good stuff, bro. Common Grounds' owner's name is Cory, too. Nice folks. He knows me as the guy who's always "shitty" when he asks: "How's it going?"
Gordy and Hank play there once in a while.
No volcano is going to shut down my art career! :-) Thanks, Larry. I shook owner Cory's hand yesterday—anyone who's willing to have my art around is all right in my book.
beautiful wife, but GOP, i think....
Nice work. While not cryptic, I suspect your triptych reflects the time of day of each panel was painted (top to bottom: morn, afternoon, evening)?
I like abstract art, and I like yours. Trinity 47 is my favorite. Congratulations on the show. Thanks for sharing the photos.
Cory, I put a story on Dakota Today about two Rapid City women selling stuff on Etsy after seeing about Etsy in the Rapid City Journal and forgot that you were selling your art there. I will try to remember to edit that post, but it was awhile ago. Congratulations on getting your stuff out into the public.
Polar Gem is my favorite. And I agree with Taunia, some of the pieces have kind of a geometric contemporary Indian feel. Nice work Cory. Have you met my friend Dick Termes yet?
Love the top one. Does it come in a smaller size?
I love hearing how different paintings grab different people. Thanks, everyone!
John, the top one (the yellow one, right?) is called "Like a God into Our Room." It's 4 ft. by 2 ft. You can order smaller prints of it on my ImageKind website: http://www.imagekind.com/MemberProfile.aspx?MID=3687cece-cf5f-4ab7-9fcc-f6f6e33de660
Mark: interesting observation! Actually, I painted all three at the same time. But the chronology of creation should not bind your interpretation. I'm totally comfortable with alternative and unexpected interpretations.
Indian influence... also interesting! I don't recall giving that influence conscious consideration while creating these works. But maybe growing up with the works of Oscar Howe, Joanne Bird, and similar artists in the neighborhood, I've osmosed some of that style? Maybe I need to go back down to the Dahl in Rapid and look at Donald Montileaux's work again, see what common threads might be there. (I do like his primary colors!)
Oh, and I haven't gotten to shake Termes's hand yet, but my wife and daughter visited his studio last month!
Ah, yes! The serendipitous moments. I grew up about 6 blocks from the Oscar Howe Art Center and stopped in a lot as a kid. Your "Polar Gem" reminds me a lot of this one: http://tiny.cc/o7z9bw
