KSFY Talks to Madison Thrift Store Opponent

KSFY sends Courtney Collen to Madison to talk to Gayle Maberry about the proposed "community thrift store" that would use her sales tax dollars to compete with her business.

Oh yeah, love that screen shot at 0:57.

Collen fails to get Mayor Gene Hexom or any other proponents of the thrift store on camera. That leaves the story somewhat incomplete. Perhaps she'll return with a camera crew for some full journalism for Monday night's Madison City Commission meeting at 5:30 p.m., downtown at City Hall, to record the "update" thrift store boosters Clark Sinclair and Jerry Johnson plan to offer.

Note that Collen's final comment about a petition muddles the issue. A petition will only arise if the city approves Sinclair, Johnson, et al.'s request for $150,000 from the city coffers. That petition would refer that funding, not the entire privately conceived thrift store, to a public vote.

I hope you'll be at the city commission meeting, Cory - I can't make it. I also hope someone will make it plain to the steering committee that, as private citizens, of course they can build anything they want to: it's just the idea of using PUBLIC TAX DOLLARS that so many of us are opposed to!

I'm with you there, Eve. Build whatever you want with your own dollars, Clark and friends. But when you come ask for my dollars, bring a business plan at least as detailed as what you'd expect of me if I came knocking and asked for a handout.
