Biden Debates Ryan: The October Surprise?

Last updated on 2012.10.12

Vice President Joe Biden and Congressman Paul Ryan debate the future of the Republic in just a few minutes. I'll be watching and snarking a bit on Twitter; I welcome your kibbitzing as well!

The three things I'd get a kick out of seeing from tonight's debate:

  1. Uncle Joe drops the F-bomb again. (Net polling effect: +10 for Obama.)
  2. The Vice President visibly seethes at the Congressman's constant lying. He saves up his righteous indignation for the closing remarks, when he erupts on the Congressman for his callous disregard for truth, justice, and the American Way. Then he grabs his chest and, as planned by Team Obama, delivers the best fake collapse since Kevin Kline in Dave. Biden is rushed to the hospital; Twitter lights up with "Ryan causes heart attack" meme; next day, Biden announces he must step down; Obama picks Hillary Clinton to replace him. (Net polling effect: +20 for Obama.)
  3. VP Biden simply tells the truth, coolly, calmly, with no drama or memorable one-liners. (Net polling effect: +2 for Obama... but +20 for Joe and Barack's karma, because the truth matters more than anything else.)

This moderator has a lot better control than last week. I had to lie to my elderly aunt who called long distance from Minneapolis-----she called about 7:30 and would still be talking if I hadn't made up a reason that I had to get off the phone. She wouldn't have understood if I said I wanted to hear the debate.

Holy cow! Twitter just told me I've exceeding the daily limit on sending Tweets! I've never done that before!

  3. caheidelberger Post author | 2012.10.11

I counted: 135 Tweets since this morning, 128 during debate.

The older feller spanked the child and sent him off to his room without desert. It takes a lot to make me happy, but happy I am on how he handled this lying liar. Sometimes, you just need to wash there widdle mouths out with soap for being so reckless with the truth, and tonight, Joe brought out the Zest.

Ryan wasn't drubbed as roundly as expected: fun show.

Sure, I liked Biden's fire, but did he go slightly over the line sometimes in his laughing, smirking and interrupting? I liked what Biden said, and I understand he wanted to make it clear to the public that he thought Ryan was stretching the truth, but I was slightly put off by him acting a bit like a jerk. I guess I prefer a mixture of the cool demeanor of Obama with the fire of Biden. They make a good team.

I was extremely disappointed in the lack of (Les wow) when Ryan was chosen.
I am pleasantly surprised by the old farts inability in self control......zee red button, I vant to puuuush zee red button and Ryan's self control.
Lies are politics Jerry, get over it.

Smokin' Joe destroyed the punk, who sounded and looked like a bizarre muppet, complete with squeaky voice and hyper-animated head bobs. This was unexpected. Now if we can only graft some of the Biden genes into Obama.

  9. Les 2012.10.11

Sounds like a kinky liberal plot Dougal. YouTube it for us.

  10. Dougal 2012.10.11

And appearing as a squeaky, robotic, bizarro muppet was the kinky neocon plot, Les. It worked!

  11. Jana 2012.10.11

"Lies are politics. Get over it."

    Wow. Just wow.

Ryan confused: thought Mick Larkey was one of the Beatles.

Funny is a strange way, is it not Jana? The republicans actually believe that the only way to do anything is to lie about it. I guess that is why they are in such awe of Mitt as he is the king of bullshit mountain and has never met a position that did not warrant a couple of lies just to get it warmed up. I will say this though about ole Les and his declaration of lies being the name of the game, as a republican, he is telling the truth. They own it and they are proud of it.

I thought this debate was a draw. Biden look and sounded good, but a lot of times I could hear my wife, who doesn't follow politics, say to the TV "Joe could you be quiet and let Ryan talk?" Ryan at times seemed weak but also got the best of Joe. I do like it when the Republicans say "Biden lied tonight!" then the Democrats say "Ryan is not telling the truth!" One thing I have learned in both business and politics, both sides say what they want in half truths to appease the base. I think Biden helped Obama tonight but not by much more than a half a point or a point in the polls.

I thought Biden was so bad it almost made me change the channel. Almost. I didn't get what I wanted out of Ryan but at least I didn't have a negative reaction to him. Biden was an arrogant condescending SOB.

  16. mike 2012.10.11

I don't know if Biden lied tonight and frankly I don't think either side lies they just believe different facts.

Biden was an out and out jerk in this debate. He lost this debate on SUBSTANCE.

“You cannot debate somebody who is dishonest. You just can’t,” he said. “The people say I’m a good debater. I can’t debate somebody who won’t tell the truth.”

That was Newt Gingrich this year talking about debating Mitt Romney.

Joe Biden showed one way to debate somebody who is dishonest.

  18. Paula 2012.10.12

Personally I think Biden made a fool of himself-he was rude by interrupting and just his demeanor in general. There was one point he sighed really loud when the camera was on Ryan. Even my high-school aged daughter who participates in debate and oral interp said Biden was treating the moderator disrespectfully :)

  19. larry kurtz 2012.10.12

As usual, the white people only like it when the black guy is covered in blood. Biden looked like a cougar playing with a field mouse.

  20. larry kurtz 2012.10.12

makes me wonder even more why thune got overlooked for the nod.

  21. DB 2012.10.12

I'd say Biden won more points, but he looked like an idiot doing it. This wasn't the same slaughter Obama went through, but it is hardly a win for Dems. I'd chalk it up to a tie with a slight lead to Biden, but that lead could be taken away with the effect of his old and angry demeanor. The Dems have allowed the Romney campaign to make up a lot of ground in the last couple weeks.

  22. Les 2012.10.12

Jana, just wake up from a 100 year nap?
Believe everything a Dem tells you?
    Wow. Just wow.

  23. larry kurtz 2012.10.12

Jana nailed it: Romney is a "car guy" like Ryan is heterosexual.

  24. Jana 2012.10.12

100 year nap? With kids, that seems like a welcome dream.

Les, we both know that lying has been in politics for a long time, the difference between you and I is that you think it's OK. I don't.

  25. Les 2012.10.12

Got it Jana, any more good advice to go with my morning Joe?
A little advice for you and your morning juice of whatever sort you partake. My statement was one of contempt. Look up the definition of "scorn".

  26. Jana 2012.10.12

Lapsang Souchong tea is the morning drink of choice Les. Has a smokey outdoorsy aroma, but is actually pretty mellow. Perfect for fall.

Les, I don't see scorn in "Lies are politics. Get over it." as much as I see acceptance and approval. Perhaps it is just giving up on any hope for politicians being held to the truth...sorry I missed your intention of showing scorn.

Maybe I should switch to a Fair Trade dark roast coffee.

  27. Les 2012.10.12

Prob not Jana, me on ol rough house Joe in the morning is enough caffeine for one blog.
Maybe it was sarcasm, defeat, humor, who knows Jana.
Have you ever followed a well respected politician around a room by happenstance and heard three different twists to the same story. Well there is lies, damned lies and statistics. Is one better than the rest because he is my guy or your guy?

  28. Jana 2012.10.12

Yes Les, I have had more than a few opportunities to listen to politicians as they work a room and heard exactly what you were describing. Those that changed their views depending on the audience lost my respect and in many cases my vote.

Those that flat out lied lost both.
