Annette Bosworth, Republican, Also Digs Che

Last updated on 2014.05.26

Dr. Annette Bosworth is a smart, independent physician. But she's too independent to run for U.S. Senate or any other office and win as a Republican:

Some of my conservative friends would assert that only a Democrat would wear a Che Guevara t-shirt. But whether she challenges M. Michael Rounds in the GOP primary or comes to her senses and runs as a Democrat, Dick Wadhams will send every likely voter in South Dakota a copy of this photo.

When someone on Facebook questioned Dr. Bosworth's celebration of Guevara, her husband Chad Haber defended her by saying "Remember her kids are named after republican presidents. She is a republican. Just reading different propaganda than you."

Hmm... We've had two recent Presidents with the middle name Walker, but no President Republican, Democrat, or Whig has had the name Chancellor* or Prescott. Chad must be counting future presidents, too. Clever.

*Correction 19:51 MDT: In my original post, I misidentified one of the Haber-Bosworths' children by the children's deceased grandfather's name. I regret and have corrected that error.

"For many around the world, Che has become a generic symbol of the underdog, the idealist, the iconoclast, or the man willing to die for a cause. He has become, as author Michael Casey notes in Che's Afterlife: The Legacy of an Image, "the quintessential postmodern icon signifying anything to anyone and everything to everyone."[1]"

I do not think Che is worth celebrating... But... It is definitely worth reading his work and studying him. There are some great things to be learned from Che. Just have to balance his good intentions with the horrible things he did.

That, my thoughtful libertarian compadre, is a reasonable statement. I would actually find it quite interesting to hear Mike Rounds say to Annette Bosworth during a debate, "What do you mean when you say Che Guevara is your beacon?" and then have the two of them conduct a lengthy conversation along exactly the lines you mention. Discuss Che. Discuss Latin American history. Discuss communism, revolution, violence, oppression. Discuss how all of those things relate to American foreign policy, modern politics, you name it. We could learn a lot from that conversation.

But we won't get that conversation if Bosworth runs. We'll get Dick Wadhams waving that picture and screaming, "Che Bosworth! Booga-booga-booga!"

I wonder if it could be in regards to Che's mission work as a doctor in 3rd world Latin America in his early 20's. I can see Mrs. Bosworth admiring an individual for there tireless work to improve conditions for underprivileged lower classes. Not everything about Che was evil and wrong. Just the things that everyone remembers.

Jason, I welcome Dr. Bosworth to spend her primary dollars educating the public about the good and the harm done by Che Guevara.

    I bet you would.

Absolutely. As a teacher, I'm always interested in getting people to se past common assumptions and over-simplifications and look at history and its main characters in their full complexity.

But you and I know the oversimplifying GOP primary voters would eat any Republican candidate alive for showing such honesty and courage.

Wow. I found this linked from Daily Kos's elections roundup today.

    Congrats Cory!

Thanks, Curtis! Not many Republicans will read Daily Kos, but they should, and they should ask Bosworth just what her shirt and her words mean.

A Republican that likes a Marxist-Communist Revolutionary soldier? Does she even know what he stood for?
