Party of Responsibility Blames Schools for SF Kids’ Misuse of Computers

In the absolutely not-news department, KELO discovers that kids can use computers to find racy pictures on the Internet and that Web filters are imperfect.

In the absolutely not-politically-consistent department, champion of personal responsibility Dakota War College concludes that since some kids use Sioux Falls School District computers to access these racy pictures, the Sioux Fals School District is a bunch of jerks:

So, they don’t block them adequately, but students who stumble across them, regardless of intent, are suspended! What an awesome school district!

The Sioux Falls School District. Providing naughty photos, and suspending kids for biting the apple dangled in front of them [Pat Powers, "The Sioux Falls School District. Providing naughty photos, and suspending kids for biting the apple dangled in front of them, while I remain too lazy to condense my thoughts into a manageable journalistic headline, but since I'm not really a journalist, that doesn't matter, does it?" Dakota War College, 2013.11.19.].

By Pat's logic...

  • When a student whacks another student over the head with a French textbook, blame the school for issuing such dangerous books.
  • When a student scrawls naughty graffiti in the school bathroom, blame the school for handing out pencils and putting up walls.
  • When P.E. students snap each other with school-issued towels, blame the school for providing those towels and a locker room in which such bad behavior can take place.
  • When a kid chokes on a chicken nugget in the cafeteria, blame the school for serving something chunkier than applesauce.

Schools provide students with all sorts of tools for learning. A few students misuse those tools. Schools would be remiss if they did not hold students accountable for the use of those tools.

Only a bad craftsman blames the tools... or the guy at Ace Hardware (or the school district, or Google) who handed out the tools.

Newsflash...These kids have phones that can access the same sites. They only do it in school to impress/scare the girls. It's time to cut the head from this technology snake and ban electricity within the entire district. Only projector films of Ronald Reagan will be acceptable media.

Cut PP some slack, Cory. He's stung by criticism that his once-proud blog has become nothing more than a press release outlet. He's trying mightily to reintroduce some in-house content even if it is dumb as heck.

Is Pat Powers the one that does the Anonymous and then the Anon quick reply on his blog? That is like clockwork. Is he just so indebted to Mike Rounds and company b/c they gave him that state job that he won't voice anything on the EB5 story? Is it like Skull and Bones where you're just sworn to secrecy when you're in the ol' boys club of Pierre? He says there's nothing to talk about with EB5? Ha! Just millions of SD people's money missing and a dead man that was in the middle of it.

My favorite part is when he argues with himself or tells himself he should be covering eb5. LOL

  5. Douglas Wiken 2013.11.20

If PP bans any sensible commenters, he ends up having to write all the comments himself.

  6. Bree S. 2013.11.20

Yeah, its probably just a form of blog promotion. Who actually goes to the DWC to read the "articles?" I go for the comment train wreck.

    dwc is under withering fire.

  8. Bree S. 2013.11.20

Larry, did you see that comment about PP and honest Schoenbeck putting on a McLaughlin Group show? And he'd do it but he's soooo busy with his day job and the blog? LOL LOL

  9. Bree S. 2013.11.20

I wonder why Jammer's not posting. Think he got banned? That wouldn't be a good idea on PP's part.

the guymon case caught my attention because pat knows the church has a grip on pierre, bree: schoenbeck is just the tip of the glacier.

cory knows there is something sticking in my gut: it ain't pretty and it's decades old.

  12. Bree S. 2013.11.20

The church? I'm guessing you mean the Catholic Church? The Catholic Church has had serious worrisome problems in the past Larry, but its on a better track now. Don't be so hard on it. That Pope Francis is a strong man. As soon as he walked out and asked the crowd to pray for him I was so relieved. And he's been working on reconciliation and reaching out to the leaders of other religions - that is exactly what has to happen now. Things will get better for the Catholic Church as long as he is leading it.

Don't worry, Larry. It will take some time to bring fresh air into that cloister. But it will happen.

You know Larry, I never read that post of Guymon's until you pointed it out. Horrible what they're doing to him, Willard, and who knows who else.

  16. Bree S. 2013.11.20

That church sure looks creepy. And Cory's right about them not being able to call themselves Christian by definition. Block voting... don't the Hutterites do that too? And they got EB5 money. Huh.

1981, after two years in missoula: a fistful of mushrooms and a filipino band playing john denver in the safari lounge in brookings. my hometown had changed. fast-forward to 2009 and my dad at riverview manor: a janklow-owned facility in flandreau.

    am convinced benda-gate is linked.

Was it Sibby that brought up a racketeering lawsuit that was thrown out of court?

And there's all those illegal aliens running around Huron.

  22. Bree S. 2013.11.20

Except the block voters in Scenic right? Now you're confusing me lol.

Now I'm more curious why Rhoden voted against Stace's addition to the platform on illegal immigration. I thought that was odd when I read it.

  23. Bree S. 2013.11.20

That's beyond awful. No wonder Stace was upset about it, his wife being Filipino, and that explains that addition to the Republican platform. Rhoden trying to kill it - I have serious concerns about him now.

I think you figured some things out Larry. Fraud, money laundering, Illegal aliens.. sounds like RICO act to me. Hey, I think this race is going to get really interesting. Better make some popcorn.

  24. Deb Geelsdottir 2013.11.20

Holy smoke Larry! That story about the Oacoma motel is so perverse! That couple is beyond perverse. Ick.

  26. Bree S. 2013.11.20

Just to go a little farther down the rabbit hole of speculations, if this is a RICO Act investigation.. that increases the likelihood that Benda was murdered and not just accidentally shot, at least in my mind.

  27. interested party 2013.11.20

round back to pp's penchance for prurient pandering.

  28. Bree S. 2013.11.20

I think PP is losing it, Larry.

  29. OK, so DWC is arguing, in effect, that this tool needs to be better regulated.

And Cory, you're saying that you can't blame a few bad apples if a tool is used badly.

If you substitute "guns" for "computers," didn't you two just flip sides in the philosophical debate?

Feel free to point out where my logic is wrong. I likely missed something.

  30. Bree S. 2013.11.20

I have been evaluating Larry Rhoden's record on illegal immigration votes, and I am not pleased with what I see. TG - as a Rhoden supporter - explain to me why your candidate cosponsored and supported 2011's SB 156 "to prohibit the employment of unauthorized aliens," and yet the very next year OPPOSED 2012's SB 155 "to prohibit the employment of unauthorized aliens."

What happened between 2011 and 2012 that changed Larry Rhoden's mind about employing unauthorized aliens in South Dakota? Why did he Co-sponsor and support 2012's HCR 1015 "urging the FEDERAL government to secure our NATIONAL borders and enforce US immigration laws" and yet in the same session oppose SB-155 "to prohibit THE EMPLOYMENT of unauthorized aliens?"

    WHY?

  31. Bree S. 2013.11.20

for that matter - GRUDZNICK - explain.

  32. caheidelberger Post author | 2013.11.20

Interesting flip, Heidi! I reject the flip because...

    (1) Schools don't hand kids guns.
    (2) The danger posed by misuse is of a very different character and degree.
    (3) Distributing computers meets a fundamental educational purpose.
    (4) At the very least, we would also have to replace the words "school" and "kids" to come close to discussing the flip you propose... and then we'd be talking a very different public policy issue.

But let me muck about in the possibility that the flip you propose is logical. I contend I remain consistent: I totally support the school strongly regulating the use of the computers that it hands out to kids. Every one of those students signed an appropriate use agreement saying they would not access inappropriate material. The school is enforcing the agreement that those students signed and then violated.

To the extent the analogy remains valid, I advocate regulation of guns as well, with restrictions on possession (let's start with "no guns for the mentally ill" and work our way up from there) and strong penalties for misuse. I advocate unrestricted state distribution of neither guns nor computers.

    Whew—how's that?

I leave it to Mr. Powers to explain his own consistency.
