The very conservative P&R Miscellany sees the untrustworthy Annette Bosworth starting to implode. Starting? tweet-muses the very Democratic Ryan Casey.
As I hope serious press scrutiny will end the Bosworth campaign, a friend of the blog writes, "I don't hope she drops. I want this campaign to last forever, it's that awesome."
I could almost go there. Almost. If I were a purely political monster, I would.
But exposing Annette Bosworth's schemes isn't all about politics. It's about Bosworth and her husband Chad Haber lying to people, using people, and hurting people.
Here's an e-mail I received this evening from one of the people whom Bosworth and Haber scammed with their fraudulent Preventive Health Strategies raffle. This ticketholder, with fears confirmed that Bosworth and Haber will threaten character assassination against anyone who speaks up against them, remains anonymous. But this ticketholder is rightfully unhappy:
I just read your latest on Bosworth and I can honestly say I'm a bit pissed. To have my credibility and integrity questioned by the likes of those two morons is beyond me....
I've tried to contact Chad three times since the first of the year and have had no response from him, even though he gave me his personal cell number and told me when I finally tracked him down that he would have it with him at all times and answer right away. I've never in my life dealt with someone who has lied straight-faced to me, and taken advantage of my generosity and good-will and it disgusts me more than anything [PHS raffle ticketholder, e-mail to Madville Times, 2014.02.23].
I don't like being tricked. I don't like being lied to. I don't like my fellow citizens being tricked or lied to or lied about.
If Annette Bosworth were just Lora Hubbel making crazy speeches or Henry Sinkie playing petitions and showing off his awesome beard, having fun and not hurting anyone, she wouldn't be news.
But Bosworth and her husband are hurting people. They are insulting and impugning the character of my e-mailing friend and other decent South Dakotans. They are preying on vulnerable citizens whose politics may be wrong but whose wrongness does not justify their victimization. They are repaying hope and trust with self-serving dastardry.
That's why Annette Bosworth and Chad Haber are news.

What your ticketholder friend should be upset with is that the AG's office has failed him. It's very easy for the AG's office to verify that he bought a ticket, and that he wasn't refunded his money. Yet this has gone on for months and no criminal charges have been brought, and no public statement has been made by the AG's office about a scam taking place, and no refund has been obtained. Had this matter been handled promptly by the AG's Office, Bosworth/Haber would be defendants now in a criminal action or a civil enforcement action and would be in no position to claim that any of their victims are liars. For your ticketholder friend, justice delayed is justice denied.
Does AG Jackley exist or is he just a figment of someone's imagination?
If you are cheated out of your money in an illegal game of chance, what recourse do you have? There are restrictions on gambling here. Raffles have to be conducted for charitable ends . Ticket holders are supposed to understand their purchase of a raffle ticket is a donation. I am trying to remember the last time I bought a raffle ticket for anything , but I think it was printed up as a receipt for a donation. Perhaps somebody who is holding one of these raffle tickets can tell us exactly what it says.
So you agree Anne Beal that what Bos and her sidekick did, was illegal. Please call Marty and suggest criminal action.

Anne, the rules for the land raffle, as posted by PHS online until last November, include Rule #12: "In the event that the prize is unavailable, PHS liability shall be limited to refund of ticket price to purchasers. PHS liability for any other claim is limited to refund of ticket prices."
I always thought that for a raffle to be legal and legitimate,someone had to win the big prize. If records weren't kept that should sound alarm bells in everyone's head that this is a scam.
Chad even scammed his own father. On the day Denten Haber died, he and Chad had lunch together. Denten gave Chad a large check and together they decided that Chad's "calling" was to take Denten's money and build a clinic and school in Haiti. Chad left a few days later with a one way ticket, because he was supposed to stay in Haiti until the school/clinic were finished. After a while, Chad returned, but I've never seen anything about the clinic/school, and they never talk about it. I have a feeling Denten's check is part of the money for Annette's campaign

I'm late to this party but I am left wondering why the Secretary of State's office kept approving all these raffle requests
According to the gaming commission. the way it works is you have 365 calendar days to either hold the raffle or refund money from the date approved by the state and city. The city also has to approve all requests. The money is to be held in escrow until such time.....I felt that was not happening, that is why I left....among many other concerns that I have shared with proper authorities.
Anne, I'll actually cut the SOS slack on that issue. If an organization decides to hold several raffles and submits the proper information on its applications, does the SOS have any grounds to investigate or deny?
Haber can just refund the money out of the escrow account. Unless the money was co-mingled and already spent. I'm sure haber or his atty can confirm this didnt happen.
