Bosworth Worried Jackley Will Prosecute, Provides Best Evidence Against Self

Last updated on 2014.06.22

We've had six solid meat-and-potatoes blog posts today; it's time for dessert.

Amid the comedy of the latest installment of her increasingly manic, scattershot publicity stunt, fake U.S. Senate candidate Annette Bosworth refused to answer questions from reporters today about whether she was in the Philippines at the time that signatures were illegally gathered in her name last January. "I am not hiding it," Bosworth said, according to reporter David Montgomery. "I am trusting that the process works."

Let's review the crime quickly: Bosworth swore that she gathered petition signatures between January 5 and January 15. During that time, Bosworth was in the Philippines, where she could not have gathered the signatures she swore she gathered. Bosworth thus committed perjury on her petition to run for Senate.

Montgomery fails to cross the t in his article. While Bosworth adopts this lawyerly non-responsiveness, Montgomery could easily have helped show that Bosworth was telling the truth (that's news!) when she said she is not hiding her absence from South Dakota during the period in question. As I documented in April in my original perjury brief, Bosworth publicly documented her Philippines trip on her own website on January 5, January 8, and January 15. Her husband Chad Haber documented Bosworth's presence in the Philippines with this Instagram photo on Janaury 8. Chad further documented the trip in a series of Tweets from January 6 to January 15 (landing in Manila, safe in Philippines, in country, at airport, at dinner, in Tacloban, in Pasay, in Guam, over Honolulu).

Gee, Chad, maybe you should have tweeted in Tagalog so we wouldn't know what you were saying. But go ahead, Chad. Have Joey hit Delete. I have screen shots.

As if that's not enough, in her rambling, pathos-filled interview with Greg Belfrage on April 17, after persistent redirects from the host, Bosworth admitted that one of her petition signers "signed it while we were in the Philippines."

It's pretty clear Bosworth has already admitted she did not witness signatures that she swore she witnessed. The public record she herself created in January and April undoes the "vehement denial" Bosworth issued from the Minnehaha County Courthouse steps today. But because that Sioux Falls paper stops at Annette's baloney (admittedly plenty damning baloney: who hears a line like that and doesn't groan in disbelief?), I have to finish the story for them.

SF Press conference calling for Jackley recusal 20140516
Annette Bosworth at the courthouse... hmm... why do I have the feeling we'll see that caption again?

Astute political readers will watch the video of Bosworth's noon theater and wonder why she staged this cheap event anyway. Why would any serious candidate hold a press conference to bring more attention to a criminal investigation against herself? Where's her campaign manager, who should be telling her to shut the heck up?

Well, Bosworth's campaign coordinator Daniel Freeman isn't going to be much help. He's not a politico who knows when silence is the right tactic. He's a graphic designer who thinks sex sells. On his business website, Freeman's logo is pursed red lips. His tagline is "Ready to get graphic? Having a successful business is sexy...." He drapes this tagline over a female model whose only visible clothes are a bandana and a bra. His portfolio as of yesterday bore a banner image of a woman's legs in sexy thigh-high nylons and high heels on a bed. Freeman cut the image off below the waist, showing just the edge of some scant pajama over bare curves. Since I checked yesterday, Freeman apparently decided to tone the portfolio header image down to a man checking his tie. But he has plenty of other leggy images objectifying women by (pay attention to the metaphor!) cutting off women's heads.

Freeman lives in the world of image and objectification, not effective politics... and Annette's performance today (why, yes, she was showing the cameras a bit of cleavage, hidden only by the script to which she was chained) shows Freeman's paltry, seamy skill set at work.

But hey, when you're not a real campaign, who needs a real campaign manager?

Now, back to my Bosworth-free weekend.

The pretty young Dr. will haunt you every waking moment, Mr. H, until you slay your white whale.

  2. student 2014.05.16

The cherry on top is that she posted a daily devotional today that she filmed during that January trip to the Philippines. Kind of a nice f.u. to jackley.

  3. larry kurtz 2014.05.16

When this gig tanks her future in acting orange could be the new black.

  4. larry kurtz 2014.05.16

    Strike that, reverse it....

  5. Roger Cornelius 2014.05.16

Bosworth's next press conference will likely announce the formation of:

Bosworth Criminal Defense Fund (Chad you're on your own).

  6. WestRiver 2014.05.16

Seriously Cory..her devotional is a copy of one she filmed in Phillipines

  7. owen reitzel 2014.05.16

I loved the grassroots reference-like people are flocking to her. I laughed so hard I almost had tears in my eyes.

  8. grainofsalt 2014.05.16

Cory, When you printed the petitions that Bosworth turned in, I think there were almost 50 that Annette herself personally circulated. I remember wondering why, with all the grass roots support she's constantly reminding us she has, she had to do almost half the legwork herself to get names on her petitions. Seemed odd.

  9. grudznick 2014.05.16

Mr. Grain, I bet you that the young Dr. gets a higher percentage of her fellows to sign as she wanders about with these papers. Would you not sign a paper that young woman waved at you?

  10. Deb Geelsdottir 2014.05.16

I watched the video. Grudz, your pretty young doctor is indeed, insaner than most. Allow me to modify that to Very Much Insaner than Most.

  11. Roger Cornelius 2014.05.16

    Bosworth is saner than grudz.

  12. grudznick 2014.05.16

Ms. Geelsdottir, I'm a Rhoden man. Even though Dr. Bos started flashing cleavage today. Won't affect my vote.

  13. Deb Geelsdottir 2014.05.16

Roger, I think Grudz is actually fairly sane and reasonable, with a sharp and ornery streak. I like that about a person. It's the challenge of, Is he really serious, or just messin' wit me? I think that's fun. Maybe I shouldn't have said that out loud. I think I said too much about myself.

  14. Sam 2014.05.16

She has a couple good points after that very weak press conference

  15. Dave Baumeister 2014.05.16

Who is this Daniel Freeman guy? What an awful website. Why would anyone hire this … person... as a graphic designer --- let alone a campaign "coordinator" (I thought they were supposed to be "managers")? But if you need a graphic designer, I strongly recommend Chad Haber's brother-in-law at Alpha Graphics. They didn't pay him either, so Haber's brother-in-law had to do what so many others have done, and took Haber/Bosworth to court! I'd say that family has an interesting Christmas, but I believe Chad is persona non grata at family holiday gatherings. Very sad. His sister and mother are two of the most wonderful people I know.

  16. CK 2014.05.17

Cory...The Fundly accounts for Haber and Bosworth seem to have been taken down. I think we might be nearing the end.

  17. Brent 2014.05.17

How could Jackley not prosecute? How could he not? I wonder if it was Annette's idea to run or her dirty lawyer, Joel Arends. He thinks he is something else. Perhaps have Boz run and draw all the attention away from Rounds and EB5? Dirty dirty dirty.

  18. Jon 2014.05.17

she apparently has been calling newscenter1 all day today yelling at them to take the story on her down. bahahah

  19. JeniW 2014.05.17

She should not worry, Jackley is a Republican and he will not pursue any criminal charges toward another Republican, or he will water it down so much that the charges will be easily dismissed.

  20. Troy 2014.05.17

In a couple of weeks, I wonder if your crush on Annette will cause you to also cover the trial. You and Grudz friendly competitors for her attention or unfriendly? :).

Seriously, you are so right. What sane person brings up in a campaign they are under investigation. Thanks for all you did here on this loon.

P.S. What I can't get out of my head is that people who knew these two for years say the same thing:

1). The person they knew years ago was a wonderful person and they maintain affection.

2). They don't know how they fell off the tracks so far.

They are flabbergasted as they can't put the two together.

  21. mike from iowa 2014.05.17

This woman epitomizes wingnut's take on fetii after they are brought into this world. She uses them as stage props to further her career or solicit money. She needs to be safely tucked into an asylum and they need a more normal family setting.

  22. Rhino Lynn 2014.05.17

When she is in prison are we going to see a "Free Annette Bosworth" campaign?

The way she craves attention I can only imagine what she will be like among the other inmates.

Chad? The Big House? Springfield? Yankton Federal Prison?

  23. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.05.17

HiLarryous, Larry! Excellent use of YouTube.

JeniW, you assume AG Jackley views her as a Republican. Steve Hildebrand provides the evidence that she's a fake Republican. Bosworth's attack on Jackley could provoke him to take even tougher action. Independent of all the particulars, I can imagine a general scenario in which an attorney general accused of acting against fair elections would respond by proving he's acting very much in the interest of protecting the integrity of elections. He would gather even more evidence, mount a rock-solid case against the accuser on as many charges as possible, and mount a very visible prosecution to prove that the accuser was really full of crap and that he was acting with absolutely sterling intentions and in strict accordance with the law and the evidence. Bosworth just reduced her chances of leniency from the AG.

Grudz: "To the last, I will grapple with thee. From Hell's heart, I stab at thee...." Difference is, I'm on the Enterprise; she and Chad are on the Reliant, the hijacked ship, captained by a megalomaniac pirate.

  24. CK 2014.05.17

Am I the only one who has been hearing ZZ Top's "Pearl Necklace" in my head during her press conferences as of late?

  25. Sam 2 2014.05.17

The South Dakota US Senate race show the sad state of the Republican Party. All they have is a prepuatal liar in Rounds a slippery snake in Bosworth and a couple right wingers and one spreading the bull. The solution vote for Pressler.

  26. rick 2014.05.17

How's that Bosworth free weekend working out?

Montgomery's reporting (actually, lack of it) appears again to be repressed by what could only be his fear of reprisals by the GOP establishment in the state. If Marty Jackley took Bosworth to task on the sham lotteries, perjury and criminal failures to pay employees, Jackley's sham excuse about letting candidates off the hook for criminal activity would evaporate as the complete fiction it truly is. Montgomery isn't going to be that rude reporter who steps out of line to explain the obvious to the public and his overlords in Pierre.

If he seriously goes after Bosworth, Jackley would commit himself to do likewise on far worse matters like Rounds' EB-5/Benda scams, and that would not please the Republican Senate Campaign Committee and the state GOP central committee.

Don't expect competent, objective reporting in this election from the Argus. They may have had a Pulitzer Prize contender news story staring them in the face every day since Richard Benda's mysterious "apparent suicide," but it won't ever be written by the Argus Leader. We'll get the Wadham-Krebs version from South Dakota's Pravda.

  27. Rorschach 2014.05.17

I thought of that too, CK. Politically incorrect.

  28. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.05.17

Dave, Bosworth has paid Freeman so far. Her FEC Q1 2014 report shows $419.77 paid to Freeman on March 28, plus $4,200 to his company, Midwest Graphic Design, in February and March. Meanwhile, she paid $10,000 to, Joey Burzynski's company, for all of her Web tricks.

The Q1 report also shows $288.73 paid to Sharon Hofer, Bosworth's housekeeper, for "mileage."

Wait a minute: Bosworth has a housekeeper?

  29. Rorschach 2014.05.17

Dr. Bosworth should be afraid that Marty Jackley will prosecute her. Can she still call herself "Doctor" after the felony conviction results in her losing her medical license? She may end up being somebody else's housekeeper.

Get your "mileage" money up front, Sharon Hofer.

  30. CK 2014.05.17

Rorscach: Totally politically incorrect, I know. I don't wish to appear sexist, but it just popped into my head! I realize she is probably trying to emulate Jackie O or someone like that...But seriously. The woman is trying too hard. It's just pretentious.

  31. Roger Cornelius 2014.05.17

Sorry to disrupt your Bosworth free weekend, like her daily devotional we can always count her daily insanity.
She has sent a press release to the Rounds blog asking for assistance on a rewrite explaining her mistakes on her attack on the Rounds/Willy Horton charge.
Appealing to the Powers/Round people for help is really scratching in the dirt.

  32. Donald Pay 2014.05.17

Rick is right. You can't count on any of the South Dakota media to get the multiple stories of GOP corruption out. There's just too much financial downside for the media in SD. Rounds is sitting on a boatload of cash waiting to dump it on the media. If he is exposed, none of that gets spent at your outlet. Then, of course, you've got the GOP-oriented business community, who will simply spend elsewhere. Hell, they love the corruption because they come out ahead. I'm not saying reporters might not want to go after the story, but it's a matter of management determining how much effort and resources to put into investigation. The amount of corruption in SD would take 3-5 full time reporters to really uncover and report it all. Just not gonna happen, and the GOP knows it.

  33. Brent 2014.05.17

Would I be correct in saying "Rick" is Rick Weiland? Why not use your last name? Curious.

  34. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.05.18

["Brent" a guy using a fake name and bogus e-mail address does not get to question anyone else's identity. Now give me a real e-mail address. I'd like to know your name before we continue.]

  35. Nick Nemec 2014.05.18

I'm fairly well connected to SD Democratic politics and have wondered who "Rick" is too, I have my suspects, Rick Weiland isn't one of them.

  36. Roger Cornelius 2014.05.18

The timing of Bosworth's press conference got me wondering if the attorney general or DCI has gotten more aggressive on the investigation or she is she just now responding to the attorney general?
