Pressler Talks Reality on Obamacare: Repeal Impossible, So Make Improvements

Independent candidate for Senate Larry Pressler writes the lead-in for what should be the first question at tonight's debate among the GOP Senate candidates on SDPB:

Obamacare is here to stay. Our new U.S. senator will have to do the hard, tedious, unrecognized work of trying to improve Obamacare [Larry Pressler, "Time for Candidates to Address Obamacare," that Sioux Falls paper, 2014.05.15].

Given this fact, Messrs. Rounds, Nelson, Rhoden, and Ravnsborg, what will you do to improve the Affordable Care Act?

After listening to the first five minutes, I could not vote for a single one on the debate. Many are all marching to the same beat of "Obamacare bad", "Congress out of control", "We don't have a climate issue and darn that Harry Reid for not gutting the EPA!". We are witnessing the Antarctic glaciers melting to the point of no return. How can any of them deny the overwhelming reports from scientists regarding the reality that global warming is what is out of control? Don't get me started on Keystone Pipeline crap. We cannot afford any of these people gutting our country and selling it to corporate interests and big oil.

So damn many lies on Obamacare. Pressler maybe right.

  3. grudznick 2014.05.15

When the pretty young Dr. said "untreated mental illness" I had whiskey come out my left nostril.

  4. Darrell Reifenrath 2014.05.15

Sounds like a contest about who hates President Obama the most.
    No ideas, just more obstruction.

  5. grudznick 2014.05.15

Mr. Fleming, that was a good question.

  6. chris 2014.05.15

Oooooh! That dirty, dirty Rapid City journal!

    Rounds, you lie!

  7. Douglas Wiken 2014.05.15

Rounds has shown he is woefully short of common sense and filled with a truckload of trite GOP mythology. He is also showing that he hasn't a single novel or useful idea. He is all about supporting the fossil fuels, banking, and insurance raiding the government and economy.

  8. Nick Nemec 2014.05.15

The best way to improve Obamacare is to allow any American who wants to to buy into Medicare.

  9. Douglas Wiken 2014.05.15

Gack. These GOP candidates are in never-never land. They are blaming Obama, Reid, and Pelosi for everything that the obstructionist retrograde GOP congress critters have done. More of them in DC is not a solution. Adding any of them to DC is like one more cow pie in a pasture.

While I am wasting Cory's pixels here, I should note that lightning knocked out my DVD recorder, but Amazon got another one here today, so I have the useless collection of Republican dwarfs on a DVD.

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha! Grudz, you kill me, you just kill me.

From what I'm reading here, I'm glad I'm not watching. I'm assuming it's streaming online somewhere, but I don't have the stomach, or nose for it. Maybe if I had some of Grudz's whiskey? But not the stuff from his nose. Urp.

  12. Roger Cornelius 2014.05.15

    grudz,
You don't suppose Dr. Boz diagnosed herself as criminally insane, do you?

  13. Rorschach 2014.05.15

Larry Pressler was right to run from the false BS that Republicans are required to spout these days. These folks are showing us why the federal government is broken, and why regular people hate Congress so much.

  14. Steve Sibson 2014.05.16

"They are blaming Obama, Reid, and Pelosi for everything that the obstructionist retrograde GOP congress critters have done."

And you guys are blaming Bush and the rest of the GOP Establishment for everything the obstructionist retrograde Democratic congress critters have done. Both parties are controlled by the same oligarchy. Like I said, Romney invented Obamacare and South Dakota GOP Establishment members came back from the Council of State Government meetings telling conservatives they have a market-based solution for the healthcare issue. They even brought Gingrich into the University of South Dakota and Augustana College to promote it. Last night, Nelson was telling it like it is and Rounds had no clothes.

  15. Steve Sibson 2014.05.16

"The best way to improve Obamacare is to allow any American who wants to to buy into Medicare."

That's right, Medicare is the foundation where the house of Obamacare stands. So what is Rounds doing by going after Obamacare with Medicare?

Answer: Once people have the government pay for something, they become dependent on it. Just like those animals in the National Parks. The GOP Establishment plays the same game the Democrats play.

  16. Thad Wasson 2014.05.16

The best way to implement the ACA is to stop the Obama exemptions.

  17. larry kurtz 2014.05.16

Oooo: no clothes. That's sounds so naughty coming from you, Steve.

  18. Jenny 2014.05.16

What are you dependent on Sibby?

  19. Roger Cornelius 2014.05.16

    Steve,

Blaming Bush and obstructionist Republicans and their tea party is justified. They whine and cry and think the sky is following with our national debt at $17 billion.
It is a fair question to ask how much of that debt was caused by Republicans and their President Bush. Two unpaid for wars, a prescription drug program, Homeland Security, and on and on.
And then to add icing to the cake, he created one of the worst financial disaster's of our time.
President Obama has had to increase the national debt to pay for the follies, that debt doesn't go away just because Bush is out of office.
To get to where we are, you have to understand where we've been. Solutions to our financial woes are there, but can't be achieved with obstructionist.

  20. Roger Cornelius 2014.05.16

Oops! Meant $17 trillion debt, not $17 billion debt.

  21. Les 2014.05.16

Seems like both parties sent our boys and girls off to fight Roger. Bush might be a flake but so are both parties in DC.

  22. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.05.16

$17 trillion, $17 billion—Roger, you are confusing the national debt with Chad and Annette's debt.

  23. Roger Cornelius 2014.05.16

Thanks Cory, The RCJ pointed out that debt in today's paper. It appears a number of senate candidates are running considerable debt, some like Bosworth's, seem unmanageable.

Les, Republicans continually say that Obama needs to own the debt, do you think saying that both parties are responsible for that debt is an adequate answer? Keep in mind that the debt President Obama added was to salvage our economy that was destroyed by Republican greed.

  24. grudznick 2014.05.16

No, Mr. C, the libbie tax and spend spend spend is what destroyed our economy. You have to have the money, sir, before you can spend it. This is the simple fact that the libbies in DC don't get.

  25. Roger Cornelius 2014.05.16

    grudz,

That is a way overused Republican meme.

Did the tax and spend liberals during the Bush administration cause the 2007 financial disaster?

  26. grudznick 2014.05.16

Mr. C, it was the Clintons that libbied up the market and caused the financial disaster. Everybody knows that.

  27. Jenny 2014.05.16

    Steve won't answer us, Roger.

  28. grudznick 2014.05.16

I called Mr. Sibby. He's upsetter than usual.

  29. Roger Cornelius 2014.05.16

Jenny, don't hold your breath, Steve will likely come back for further education.

grudz, were you wearing your tinfoil hat when you came up Clinton caused the Republican economic disaster of 2007? If so, I hope you outgrow it soon.

  30. Les 2014.05.16

The GOP controlled both houses all four years Clinton balanced the budget.
    .
The GOP only had control 3 of the 8 years of GW so I'd say both parties have a significant share the blame.

  31. Les 2014.05.16

You may be wearing a hat when you give Clinton no credit for signing the repeal of Glass Steagall, Roger. That was also a GOP controlled congress.
    .
The banking industry singlehandedly caused more financial damage and the best is yet to come with the 1.2 quadrillion notional book on the derivatives our largest banks hold. White man playing a shell game with those trinkets. So much for the constitution protecting us!

grud-Clinton, libbies destroyed economy, ...caused financial disaster? Let's backup-serial bouts of financial deregulation going back to the 1970s, policies of the Federal Reserve Board under Alan Greenspan, "the Fed has become the chief enabler of a dangerously speculative economy." Shall we talk about Reagan?
