Rep. Hickey Decries “Gay Sex” as Yucky; Discussion Irrelevant to Civil Rights

I really don't want to spend a lot of time talking about sex. On this topic, I much prefer action to words.

But I need to address Rep. Rev. Steve Hickey's post on anal sex. Earlier this week, the good reverend posted his "One Way Alley for the Garbage Truck" letter calling on medical and psychological professionals to testify that "gay sex is not good for the body or mind." Rep. Rev. Hickey takes up this scatalogical concern for political reasons, as made clear by his closing paragraph:

Before we let lawyers and judges decide this for our state and override the will of the people in the 2006 election, I issue a call to the medical and psychological communities and associations to weigh in publicly and timely on the matter of homosexuality and the human body, psyche and family, particular kids [Rep. Rev. Steve Hickey, "A One Way Alley for the Garbage Truck," Facebook post, 2014.04.28].

Rep. Rev. Hickey has said in other venues that his letter is a response to the happy marriage and impending lawsuit of Nancy Robrahn and Jennie Rozenkranz of Rapid City.

So let's discuss why Rep. Rev. Hickey's letter is a misguided non sequitur:

  1. Anal sex is gross. It involves touching poopy. Poopy is gross. Therefore, people who do anal sex should be denied equal protection under the law, since the Fourteenth Amendment says you get equal treatment as a citizen unless you are gross.
  2. Straight men and women also engage in anal sex (I feel gross just linking this stuff). Under Hickey's thinking, a whole lot of straight people should be denied civil rights.
  3. Nancy Robrahn and Jennie Rozenkranz are ladies. They have vaginas. I don't know and don't want to know (!!!) what physical activities they engage in to express their love for each other, but Rep. Rev. Hickey appears to be imputing to them and to lots of other happy couples sexual activity to which they have alternatives but in which they, as consenting adults, have a right to engage, with no impact whatsoever on their treatment in the public sphere.
  4. If our private sexual activities are now proper objects of public discussion, are we about to see a really ugly turn at candidate forums when it comes to asking Mike/Stace/Denny/Lora about their positions?

Readers, what dirty things you do in your bedrooms are none of my business, as long as you wash your hands before making me a sandwich. And they are definitely none of your legislators' business.

Must be sweeps month at the Church of the Gate: pledge now to fund Steve's reelection efforts.

    Dear Penthouse

I have this preacher, see. He seems to be somewhat concerned about the homosexual activity among some of my friends. When my friends heard about they ask me what I thought about it.

Well I thought about it for a little while an finally came up with a few things they could do without getting in to much trouble.

First somebody should get in touch with the preacher. They need to ask him in person just exactly where his proclivity, bordering on obsession, comes from whenever he talks about "gay" sex.

They also need to ask him if his knowledge of anal sex comes from first hand knowledge, " personal experience, " or some repressed thought regurgitated from a fertile imagination?

I don't know why he would care about someone elses medical costs associated with personal risk-taking unless he was secretly a supporter of nationalized health care.

  4. Eve Fisher 2014.05.02

    Nice one, Bree!
The irony of two women's marriage setting off Mr. Hickey's rant against anal sex is... whew. Mr. Hickey, don't you have any idea what lesbians do or do not do? And don't you know that a whole lot of heterosexual couples do the same? And as for the ick factor... I hate it when people pick buggers out of their nose and eat them in public. Can we round them up, too? Just a thought...

Hmm! Events seem to be playing out very similar to Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell

    perpetual war

    omnipresent government surveillance

public manipulation, dictated by a political system well we can add corporate system to that

Ministry of Truth who might that be?

Individualism and Individual Thought <<< That is becoming so yesterday!

State approved sexual positions and anything else is strictly verboten!

  6. Jerry 2014.05.02

Must be a proud moment for his district. I hope that there is a questionnaire that his supporters must notarize stating there bedroom activities and who they are with. How in the world could any sane person vote for this clown?

  7. Roger Cornelius 2014.05.02

Hickey and I have been going back and forth on this since he posted it on Facebook. That's not entirely true, I have been asking him questions and his answer was to block me from his Facebook and Twitter accounts.
My first question was why he had to ask the medical profession in a editorial about gay sex when that information is readily available on the internet. No answer.
My next question was what he hoped to gain by making bedroom issues a matter for public discussion.
Here's the one that got me banned, why are so obsessed the sexuality of young men and boys. Unfriended me and untwittered as well.
Seriously, we constantly hear ourselves saying we don't care what happens in the bedroom and then comes along a Hickey and we find out we do care or at least Republican politicians care. So much for government intrusion into our private lives, NSA is nothing compared to Hickey.

Do we really want un-annointed little godalmighties deciding our mores for all of us? Hickey's a wingnut, which proves to me he is incapable of making decisions for anyone, let alone thousands of people. Remember the right wing hysteria that Obama would rule as a Muslim? Rep. Hickey apparently is letting his religion cloud his political views. That is a no no.

  9. John Tsitrian 2014.05.02

I'm sure that church of his must be raking in some contributions from all this.

  10. Rorschach 2014.05.02

I don't want to have anything to do with other people's bedroom activities. I do want to know whether Rep. Hickey plans to introduce a bill banning certain types of sex. If so, will it apply only to homosexuals or to everybody?

Seems to me Rep. Hickey is just seeking attention for himself by provocatively singling out homosexuals for an activity that 1) is none of his business; and 2) heterosexuals do too.

  11. Joan Brown 2014.05.02

South Dakota sure seems to have a lot of wacky politicians. There are the ones that are worried about what homosexuals so in their homes, there are the ones that have their noses in women's right to choose, and then there is the one who all of sudden makes a nasty comment about people who use food stamps as a way to start a discussion about welfare reform. It seems to me like welfare reform was done several years ago. Apparently that was before Ms. Bosworth's time, and if so she must not have heard about itl

  12. Deb Geelsdottir 2014.05.02

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!! There are so many smart, witty, clever responses, plus the original post! You're all good. Nothing to add. Kudos Madizens!

  13. Rick 2014.05.02

The gaypocalypse is coming Rev Hickey. Run Steve run!

  14. Jenny 2014.05.03

Steve Hickey knew the media would be on him with his one-way alley garbage truck line posted on his very open FB page. I'm telling you, this guy likes being in the news with controversy. Reverend, go feed the poor - do something that's more worthy for your church. The gay are going to stay, they aren't goin' away!

  15. larry kurtz 2014.05.03

Hickey is raking in the dough for this latest round of GOPers abandoning code to expose the underside of that party: may they rot in pieces.

  16. Barry Smith Post author | 2014.05.03

Rep Hickey talks about the unimaginable amount of vileness in the responses that his letter generated. Any Politician that has written about gun control would find the vileness quite imaginable. The kitchen can get pretty hot.

  17. Roger Cornelius 2014.05.03

Hickey said today, "that he is more than a little sore" of this controversy and the threats being made to him and his family.

Hopefully Hickey's sermon this Sunday will be on the consequences of free speech and the perversion that is a part of the clergy.

  18. Roger Cornelius 2014.05.03

I've been waiting for the Rev Hickey to come over to Madville and visit with us.

  19. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.05.03

Roger, I've heard my new spam filter may be giving Hickey a hard time. I'm looking under the hood to see what's up. Larry, thanks for that link! I do want Hickey to have equal time.

  20. larry kurtz 2014.05.03

Hickey is pretty tired of being probed for his views up the chute: he should get a tramp stamp the reads 'exit only' with arrows pointing to where his head has been all these years.

  21. mike from iowa 2014.05.03

What? I think I know what you mean but why don’t you just say anal sex? That’s a lot less dirty.

I dunno, y’all, but from the looks of this guy he couldn’t get laid at the chicken ranch with a hen under each arm and a fifty dollar bill taped to his forehead.

You’d think he’d be pleased to get any kind of s-e-x, oops, parking the jalopy in the garage.
excerpt from JJ on Rep Hickey.

  22. mike from iowa 2014.05.03

Cory-you must have made quite an impression elsewhere. Bos and Hickey have both been introduced to another audience of kindred spirits.

  23. Roger Cornelius 2014.05.03

    Great news!

    Hickey has finally "come out"!

He replied to one of my post of John Tristans's Constant Commoner blog. As with his blog on the "happy couple", John did another excellent blog on Hickey.

Of course, Hickey's defense of his idiocy is that he has the right to express his opinion.

Anybody has any ideas on Hickey's Sunday sermon tomorrow?

  24. Roger Cornelius 2014.05.03

    Larry,

Thanks for the link to Hickey's church. He does seem to have an obsession for anal sex. What is amusing, is that he can preach about it from the pulpit, condemn it on Facebook, or whatever, but he can't stop an ages old sexual practice by either homosexuals or hetrosexuals. All he has is his misinformed beliefs.
By the way, he's also being a chicken shit, he turned off the comment section.

  25. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.05.03

Everyone has a right to express an opinion. Discussing the looks of the staters of opinions is unnecessary.

  26. larry kurtz 2014.05.03

My pleasure, Roger: Hickey is red meat King this week. A flash mob at his church tomorrow might wipe that smirk off his staff.

  27. larry kurtz 2014.05.03

Be careful tho his congregation is armed with goddess only knows what.

  28. Deb Geelsdottir 2014.05.03

Hickey hews closely to the Republican 4G playbook. "Gays, guns, gods, gynecology." It gushes more money than Bakken.

  29. Les 2014.05.03

Maddville is just full of cheap shots today, Cory. Looks like 4"X8" selfie avatars for all?

  30. Roger Cornelius 2014.05.03

    Les,
Do cheap shots not apply to you too?

  31. Lynn G. 2014.05.03

    Madville Maniacs! Peace!

  32. Tim 2014.05.03

It would appear that getting a straight answer from Rep Hickey is hard to do, can't help but wonder how the people in his district feel about that. RC and John have been trying to get some answers from him on John's blog but all anybody is getting is his religious rhetoric.
Les, I wouldn't want you think I am rude, but since you seem to be more of a right wing troll than anything else, I will not respond to you anymore (this works for Rep Hickey, will it for me?)

  33. Les 2014.05.03

How long have you been here Tim? 60 days? Not that you've responded to me or if I care whether you respond or not. I'm the best friend you Dems have. At least I vote for the person more than looking to party. And I would bet that's more than you can say for yourself.

  34. Roger Cornelius 2014.05.03

    Les,

If you are truly the best friend the Democrats have, you'll have to prove it by voting for them.

  35. Les 2014.05.03

Voting GOP or Dem proves nothing Roger. By your statement, you are no better than those you hate in the GOP, voted in by the same party mania you suffer from.
    .
I will vote for the man/woman who will sacrifice their security by doing what is right for the constituents rather than the special interests that follow both parties.

  36. larry kurtz 2014.05.03

Please join me in gutting the GOP and leaving its entrails for the crows.

  37. John Tsitrian 2014.05.03

Les, who in the fields of the various races do you see measuring up to your standard?

  38. Roger Cornelius 2014.05.03

    John,
Les is the cranky old neighbor that yells "get off my grass" all day long to imaginary children. He approves of no one or will select the most incompetent Republican candidate he can.

Les, I am unapologetic Democrat, always have been and always will be. You say you vote for the candidate, but I doubt that being your opinions tend to go the way of the tea party.

  39. Deb Geelsdottir 2014.05.03

I attend Salem English Lutheran Church in Minneapolis. Our denomination is the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. My pastor is Rev. Jen Nagel. We get a monthly newsletter, cleverly named "Salem Scene." Rev. Jen writes a column to lead off each issue. This is a portion of her May article:

"Race, sexual orientation, gender identity, socioeconomic status, age, the diversity of physical and mental abilities-- there are plenty of ways our society and even the church says No. Instead, here by God's grace, Yes, you are welcome. Yes, you are created in God's beautiful image with rich gifts and talents to share. Yes, you are claimed and named as God's own. Yes, there is plenty of hurt in our world and we are called to be about healing and wholeness. Oh, I could write more! Yes!"

There you go Hickey, a church with arms open. At my church we try to emulate Jesus, the most arms-open being ever on the face of the earth.

BTW, you can find my church at
    discoversalem.org
Take a look at the pictures. You'll see some really scary people there. Take a look at Rev. Jen. Doesn't she look awfully scary!! She and her spouse, United Church of Christ Rev. Jane McBride recently adopted their second child. I'm sure we can all see what a threat they and their children pose to decent Americans. Look at the little old ladies and men. They are out to destroy America because they think LBTG people are just fine. I can almost feel the very foundations of America crumbling as I write.

BTW, we all had a great time at Drag Queen Bingo last fall, including our oldies and youngies, although all the children turned gay before the end of the night.

I hope everyone knows sarcasm as they read it. My goal is not to shame Hickey, but to turn a bright light on how really ludicrous his fears are. My hope is that he does not truly believe everything he says. I hope and pray.

I watched Stace Nelson take on "City Hall" with the Mega Dairy issue. The LRC that he accused of mismanagement to say the least is undergoing change. Stace is not fine tuned, but he is darn sure tuned into his constituents. .
    .
I will only support Nelson from the GOP.
    .
If Stace doesn't make the primary, there are two independents I expect to bring questions to the table along with RW. RW impresses me due to the fact he is working, though probably not as hands on as Nelson, he is more hands on than any other contender.
    .
For the last 4 years I have penned the statement directed at Gov DD, "don't be getting this on you Gov", at all possible appropriate moments in time. He has allowed scurrilous actions under his guidance and I cannot support the man who doesn't keep his own house clean. I will primary with my party for Gov and wait for the cream to rise after.
    .
Rep Noem, gives me a stay at home feeling. She(Boehner) has less gumption to vote SD than Herseth(Pelosi) did and the Dems booted her. I have developed no opinion on Corinna.
    .
As I stated in an earlier post here JT, I want candidates who can ask the questions and get the answers in this election and I will support the last man/woman standing, party be damned.

  41. larry kurtz 2014.05.03

    Deb: you da woman.

  42. Deb Geelsdottir 2014.05.03

    Thank you Larry.

  43. Roger Cornelius 2014.05.03

    Deb,
After I read your well articulated comments, most of which Hickey will not be able to comprehend, I went to discoversalem. com. That is a frightening bunch, indeed. I see them poised to take down America at any moment.

Actually what I saw was a diverse group of happy people, not burdened with having to make harsh, obscene, and judgemental decisions about those that are different from themselves. It is refreshing to see the happiness of people celebrating their faith and beliefs.
There were no scowls or glaring from a pastor that tells his parish to label as sinners what others do in their bedrooms.
Rev. Hickey and Dr. Bosworth have brought great shame and humiliation on South Dakota this week, people in other states following these two stories believe that we are at least two generations behind the rest of the country in our beliefs and behaviors. Hickey and Bosworth have proven that opinion of South Dakota.
They are both cowards, they claim to want to have a discussion about SNAP and gay sex, then they lockout or ban those that would dare challenge them. We have one wannabe and one elected public servant that choose not to communicate with their own constituency.
Neither is fit for public office.

  44. Lynn G. 2014.05.04

Deb what a wonderful reply! Salem English Lutheran Church in Mpls looks like a safe and loving church to worship and heal.
