Honest Independent Pressler Touts Work with Reagan and Clinton

I'm posting Larry Pressler's latest TV ad, just because he's not a jerk like Mike Rounds who lies about the other candidates and promises to do things he'll never do:

This ad runs right up the middle, complementing his runs social left and fiscal right. I'm still not voting for him, but Pressler is defining how an Independent candidate should run.

Mike Rounds would probably never become enraged enough to call another human being names. It would lose him points in a fact-driven debate, which he always wins.

  2. Deb Geelsdottir 2014.09.04

    Wait. What?

Grudz, are you saying MMR sticks strictly with facts? You are such a provocateur. I'd bet this will be a successful rabble rouser for you.

  3. grudznick 2014.09.04

I am saying that Rick fellow seems to be really a greasy liar and Mr. H gets really enraged about it being pointed out. I was told that today even the Argus said that Rick fellow was lying on TV. In full closure I cannot tell you what his TV lies were because I have not seen them. I may not get the channels he runs his lies on.

  4. Deb Geelsdottir 2014.09.04

Thanks for the clarification, my friend.

It will be interesting to see what those "lies" really are. Do you think MMR sticks to the truth without fail? Or do you think he lies?

  5. grudznick 2014.09.04

Ms. Geelsdottir, all politicians lie. The fans of the libbies lie more than the fans of the conservative ones.

  6. Deb Geelsdottir 2014.09.04

My my Grudz. You don't usually make such baseless generalizations. You are making claims with no support, except that it is your opinion. If you don't want to be a lying conservative, preface your statement so it reads like this:

"(I think) The fans of the libbies lie more than the fans of the conservative ones."

    Now that's the truth.

  7. grudznick 2014.09.04

I thought you wanted my opinion because you asked me a question. I am sorry I misunderstood.

  8. Deb Geelsdottir 2014.09.04

Nothing to be sorry about. I was clarifying that your statement was Opinion, not Fact. I couldn't tell from your words. We're good.

And Grudz's opinion is a baseless error. Put in South Dakota terms. We have Mike Rounds and Dick Wadhams lying for the SDGOP on an almost daily basis. What lies do we hear coming from Weiland, Wismer, Crago, et al?

  10. Bill Fleming 2014.09.05

Poor Larry Pressler. Cory puts his ad up here and the only comment it gets is a half-baked sideswipe from the dull cutlass of the dread pirate Grudznick.

Meanwhile the pi$$ing match is on over the EB-5 ads. (See SDWC's new post on Round's rebuttal to Weiland's ad.) My hunch is, the longer the vague EB-5 thing goes on, the higher Pressler's poll number go. Wouldn't it be ironic if Larry accidentally wins this race using Mike Rounds's "stay above the fray" tactics?

Time to nail down the facts. Mike can wait it out. Rick's gotta hustle. If there's a point to be made, make it. Just sayin'.

  11. Bill Fleming 2014.09.05

    Okay, a little arm-chair quarterbacking:

    Rick has to:
    1. Prove the "highest bidder" claim.
    2. Show how SD was unique in administering EB-5, and (if possible) how Rounds was involved.
    3. Show how permanent visas can lead to citizenship.
    4. Show how SD EB-5 venture extensions screwed investors both foreign and domestic and pocketed their money.
    And finally:
    5. (Surprise!) Show how he will be a better senator for South Dakota than Mike Rounds, Larry Pressler and Gordon Howie.

Piece of cake, right Cory? :-)

  12. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.09.05

    Right, Bill. ;-)

As a debater used to going fast, I'm fine with spreading the flow and arguing EB-5 on the scandal front and the policy front. At the federal level, EB-5 is bad policy, inviting all sorts of abuse, corruption, financial bombs, and national security risks while immorally selling green cards, favoring rich immigrants over others. At the state level, using EB-5 enabled Joop Bollen and Richard Benda to co-opt our economic development functions for their personal profit while saddling us with economic boondoggles like Northern Beef Packers.

Larry Pressler wouldn't put up with that crap. Neither would Rick Weiland. Even Gordon Howie is on the side of truth, justice, and good government on these issues.

But I recognize that firing the guns on all of these issues, while great for HS policy debate, messes up an effective campaign. Voters don't like spreading the flow. They want one happy image, one quick vibe that excuses their choice. GOED/NBP/EB-5/SDRC sucks as a campaign issue because I can't even summarize it with one abbreviation, let alone one word or one paragraph.

But I can't leave it alone. Neither should Rick or Larry.

Cory, thank you for pointing out how simple and stupid voters are.

  14. Steve Sibson 2014.09.05

"What lies do we hear coming from Weiland, Wismer, Crago, et al?"

That education is under funded. There is plenty of money, but it is going to wrong places...brick & morter, data tracking, and standards.

  15. Tara Volesky 2014.09.05

Sibby, did you have your interview with the FAC promoters?

  16. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.09.05

Hey, Tara, stay on topic much?

  17. bearcreekbat 2014.09.05

Deb and Cory, I think Grudz may have a point about all politicians. After all, whenever one dies he or she "lies still."

  18. Joe Loveland 2014.09.05

Larry Pressler is hardly a moderate. Look at his most recent U.S. Senate voting record ratings, supplied by Project VoteSmart. His voting record was extremely conservative:

    0% National Education Association rating
    0% NARAL Pro Choice America
    95% American Conservative Union rating
4% League of Conversation Voters rating
10% National Council on Senior Citizens rating
    6% Consumer Federation of America

Extreme Makeover aside, that's the record of an extreme conservative.

  19. Roger Cornelius 2014.09.05

    Cory,
Are you stilling considering 10 minute videos on various aspects of EB-5?
That would be a good idea that we could use to saturate social media and perhaps KELOLand would pick up on it.
SDDP should help sponsor the project.
Bill makes some really good points and I think Rick has already picked up on some of them.
From this day until election day Republican voters need to be targeted by Democratic candidates with corruption being the theme. How do we simplify that message.
On a previous thread I suggested that Rick needs to reframe a part of his campaign and use the President Obama's approach in the senate race. "The senate race is not about being conservative or liberal, Democrat or Republican, it is about honesty, integrity, transparency, and the truth".

  20. Rorschach 2014.09.05

You're on to something, Bill. It's deja vu all over again. Larry Pressler of 2014 is Smilin' Mike of 2002. While Weiland and Rounds's minions go back and forth hyperventilating half-truths at each other, Pressler stands to the side and offers voters an adult conversation. Also recall how Mike Rounds soared from third place to victory in that 2002 primary. I like how Pressler is running this campaign. The Weiland and Rounds campaigns could be caught by surprise. Keep an open mind about who to vote for, Cory so as to make it count in the end.

  21. Bill Fleming 2014.09.05

    Larry Pressler. Stealth Fighter. :-)

  22. Deb Geelsdottir 2014.09.05

Good one BCB. I like it.
