Letter to the Editor: Rep. Betty Olson Should Resign over Muslim Insults

Last updated on 2014.10.08

Rapid City businessman, Piedmont resident, and former Democratic gubernatorial candidate Joe Lowe submits this letter to the editor speaking directly to Rep. Betty Olson about her "sense of humor" about Muslims. He's not joking.

Representative Betty Olson’s remarks are racist and disgusting. Now that it has created a media storm, she claims it was only a joke. Face the facts: you are a racist. You are unfit to represent the people of South Dakota.

Your “jokes” focus around Muslims filling jobs like cab drivers, motel clerks, and other menial paying jobs. According to a Pew 2007 study, Muslim Americans generally mirror the U.S. public in education and income. In fact, 24% of all Muslim Americans and 29% of immigrant Muslims have college degrees, compared to 25% for the U.S. population. 41% of all Muslim Americans and 45% of immigrant Americans report annual incomes of $50,000 or higher. This compares to the national average of 44%. Immigrant Muslims are well represented among higher wage earners in this country. 19% of immigrant Americans claim annual household incomes of $100,000. This is due to the many Muslim professionals in this country. You must have not known this.

Your comments also offend the millions of Muslims in our country and act as a great recruiting tool for the enemy—ISIS. Do the citizens of the state a favor and step down from office.

Joe Lowe

It's good to hear a prominent West River voice raised against Rep. Olson's racist remarks. I doubt we'll hear any Republicans call for Olson's resignation, but could we at least hear some due criticism? Governor Dennis Daugaard wasn't afraid to step out and call GOP Senator Phil Jensen's comments about the Ku Klux Klan and the free market "completely out of line with South Dakota values." Rep. Bett Olson's comments are at least as insensitive and politically wrong-headed, and deserve similar disdain.

I started a joke, which started the whole world crying,
but I didn't see that the joke was on me, oh no.

Thumbs up to John T.,above. :)

  2. JeniW 2014.10.09

That is a good one Mike!

  3. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.10.09

Indeed, John! Credit where credit is due! Now can you work on the higher-up members of your party to hold Betty Olson accountable for her error and make clear to her that such racism has no place in South Dakota discourse or government?

  4. mike from iowa 2014.10.09

Thanks,JeniW. It was borrowed from the Bee Gees.Opening verse of the song-I started a joke.

  5. Lynn 2014.10.09

Betty Olsen should study the history of Spain where Muslims, Jews and Christians peacefully coexisted and thrived! Many contributions in history were made in mathematics, poetry, astronomy and other areas and they just happened to be Muslim.

What Joe mentioned that they mirror our society is true. Many that I have known were highly educated and were peacemakers and would want nothing to do with the violence of ISIS.

Betty Olson should resign. She is an embarrassment to our state and will further tarnish our reputation as a land of uneducated racists rednecks. Tourism, employee recruitment and businesses opportunities could be further reduced by public attitudes like this.

I really hope Joe Lowe runs for public office again here in South Dakota. He has so much to offer.

  6. Tim 2014.10.09

As much as I wish it was different, racism runs rampant in western SD, ask any Native American that lives out here about that. The majority out here are smart enough not to talk about it in public, but privately, it's disgusting. I found it shocking at how hard it was to bring my kids up not being racists out here based on what their friends were being taught. Answered a lot of questions about it to my kids back then, fortunately I must have done something right, they turned out ok.

  7. jerry 2014.10.09

You are correct Tim regarding race and Native people's. I always find it boring when I hear the little comments, like we are all in on the game of racism. It is ugly, just like Betty the boob and her ugly comments. I think when you have such short comings about yourself, the only thing you can do is bash others. Betty is the face of ISIS when you really get down to the brass tacks of it all. She embodies the hate of herself by projecting it onto others she sees as below her. Daugaard will not repute her as he is also part of the problem with his dirty laundry of exploiting Native children. If this crowd could behead without fear, they would do exactly that. We do know that from the history of this region. The good news for our state though is that the 35% of supporters of Mike Rounds, his proven base, are the ones who feel the way they do about race along with belittling those who are of a different religion than they are. In other words, we will always have those asshats to deal with. Deal with them we can, lets just not unleash them to the rest of the citizenry of the United States. Lets put Rounds, Daugaard and of course, the dust bunny NOem out to pasture and send our brightest to represent us.

  8. larry kurtz 2014.10.09

Cory, i just tweeted the link to this post to ACLU.

  9. Roger Cornelius 2014.10.09

Joe's letter was not published in today's Rapid City Journal.

  10. Steve Sibson 2014.10.09

See how Cultural Neo-Marxism creates hate. So now Betty has to join me and Phil at the back of the bus and we have to shut the hell up as we listen to your racist and bigoted remarks against white Christian conservatives. So much for free speech in America. So much for the American Constitution. America is now a New Age theocracy. May the force be with you.

  11. Steve Sibson 2014.10.09

"I must have done something right, they turned out ok."

No you did something left and they hate whites along with the rest of you.

  12. mike from iowa 2014.10.09

Sibby, you are full of more shit than a christmas turkey. You don't have to sit at the back of the bus. You are free to take your leave if this place doesn't make you wet your pants with glee. See how easy that was and by all means, don't let the door hit you in the ass or you'd prolly want to sue someone. It's been nice and it's been rill, know the rest. Buh-bye.

  13. Joe Lowe 2014.10.09

Thanks Roger. We Democrats do have a lot of luck getting things in the Journal. Maybe tomorrow.

  14. Roger Cornelius 2014.10.09

Absolutely a perfect letter summing Betty Olson and the racism she represents.

Glad to see you are being politically active, keep up the good work. We need you.

  15. Craig 2014.10.09

Steve: "So much for free speech in America."

Steve - there is no restriction on free speech here... quite the opposite in fact. Olson was able to voice her opinion and nobody prevented her from doing so. No government agency or official is even suggesting that right be taken from her (and I'm assuming you understand the right of free speech has nothing to do with individuals or private business limiting what is said or printed).

However, just because someone has the right to free speech does not mean they are immune to the reactions to such speech. Olson is free to spew her hate everywhere she goes, but her words will provoke reactions. She cannot prevent that nor should she expect to. That is how it works.

As to your speech, you are also entitled to say whatever you wish, but that doesn't mean people aren't going to continue to call you out on your nonsense. You can pretend it bothers you, but we all know your entire motivation here is to gain attention for yourself and your ego. You might as well replace every one of your comments with "LOOK AT ME! PAY ATTENTION TO ME! LISTEN TO ME! FOCUS ON ME! RESPOND TO ME". The end result is the same.

If you were really concerned with spreading your message you would be posting on your blog on a daily basis. Instead you walk into the Sahara and start trying to sell parkas and ice scrapers only to complain about being oppressed when nobody buys any.

    No sale Steve. No sale.

  16. Lynn 2014.10.09

    Craig Thank you! sigh

  17. Roger Cornelius 2014.10.09

    Craig, Sibson is neo-stupid

  18. Bill Fleming 2014.10.09

There is important information in the pipeline right now and we need to keep Cory's information pathways clear and uncluttered. Candidates might post here, the press might want to follow leads people post here, etc, etc.

Out of respect for what Cory has built, how 'bout we all give Sibby the cold shoulder for awhile. He's filling up all these otherwise interesting conversations by drawing us all into his petty little pissing matches that are boring as hell for anyone but him to read.

He's jamming the signal friends. How about we just let him come in, crap in his pants, and then let him just sit there. I for one am way beyond tired of trying to clean after him.

Maybe if nobody engages, it will be easer to just come in and delete his happy horses hit without Cory having to worry about deleting everyone else's rebuttals along with it. I'd like to think the brain trust that posts here would take some pride in having this all be an interesting read for someone a few years from now.

But with Sibson on here bouncing himself and all the rest us off the walls, thread after thread, future readers might as well just blow right past all the comments and just read Cory's posts. And in so doing, they might miss some of the really great writing many of you have shared here. J
    ust sayin'.

  19. JeniW 2014.10.09

Steve S., you know, you should really start your own blog so that you can write whatever you want, no one will dispute you, and those who agree with you will think you are wonderful...

  20. jerry 2014.10.09

Agreed Bill Fleming, Sibson needs to move on. I will not engage him, period.

  21. Steve Sibson 2014.10.09

What Fleming is saying is that he is embarrassed to have others see you hate filled bigots exposed and you guys are unable to stand up to someone making you all face reality. Sad that you all think you can get ahead by pushing others down.

  22. larry kurtz 2014.10.09

Betty Olson should step down and let DD appoint some other earth hater to her post.

  23. mike from iowa 2014.10.09

It would be nice to discuss the merits of what Cory posts, but someone wants nothing more than to argue with whoever takes the bait. I don't give a flying fig for Sibson's religion and my ass gets tired hearing about it. Past time for the neo-wombat to realize he is too sophisticated for many of us here and go wander in the wilderness of his own making.

  24. Steve Sibson 2014.10.09

"Steve - there is no restriction on free speech here."

"Do the citizens of the state a favor and step down from office."

Lowe's letter is an attack on free speech.

  25. grudznick 2014.10.09

Mr. Sibby, what my good friend Bill is saying is that as long as there is you on this hand and Mr. kurtz on the other not real legitimate candidate or even their staff is going to post here. Ever.

  26. grudznick 2014.10.09

Except Mr. Hickey and Mr. Stan. They are legitimate candidates and politicians.

  27. Roger Cornelius 2014.10.09

Steve Sibson has no concept of the perimeters of free speech, with or without restrictions. When there is the government places duct tape over his mouth or throws him in prison for something he said, he'll than be able to cry that he has no freedom of speech. Until than, he can say any stupid thing that rolls off his tongue.

  28. Roger Cornelius 2014.10.09

Steve Sibson is just too damn lazy to write his own blog.

  29. jerry 2014.10.09

    Why bother with him Roger?

  30. lesliengland 2014.10.09

perhaps cory's graphic design people could put a red stop sign next to "Leave a Reply" enclosing the words "feeding____the troll discouraged by management", inserting "Sibby" or "Grudz" when it gets unbearable.

  31. Roger Cornelius 2014.10.09

Cory might consider doing a Pat Powers and start deleting anything and everything Troy Jones and Steve Sibson post.

But we all know Cory is bigger than that and welcomes challenges regardless of how idiotic they are.

  32. Jessie 2014.10.09

Cory and many others here understand the concept of American citizenship.

America isn't easy. America is advanced citizenship. You gotta want it bad, 'cause it's gonna put up a fight. It's gonna say "You want free speech? Let's see you acknowledge a man whose words make your blood boil, who's standing center stage and advocating at the top of his lungs that which you would spend a lifetime opposing at the top of yours. --The American President

  33. Jana 2014.10.09

Good advice Bill. I remember well your advice a few years back to not follow a certain person, who shall not be named, down the rabbit hole.

  34. Angelo Cruz 2014.10.10

    Muslims = DeceptiCons!

    Muslim Americans = Oxymoron!

Muslim Ideology = Enemy of God/America/World

  35. Angelo Cruz 2014.10.10

The ignorance about our worst enemy is astounding!

Muslim is NOT a race but an adherent to a religion that is the most dangerous cult the world has ever seen and it will unleash terror never before seen in world history.

The coming Antichrist will be Muslim and this is no laughing matter.

    Wake up!

  36. Angelo Cruz 2014.10.10

I am simply amazed that Rep. Betty Olson made a joke and people are in a conniption fit yet I don't see and responses about the evil that Muslims are committing.

  37. Tim 2014.10.10

"I must have done something right, they turned out ok."

No you did something left and they hate whites along with the rest of you.

My kids don't hate anybody, and yes I did do something right Sibson, they didn't turn out like you.

  38. JeniW 2014.10.10

Angelo, what are you, other then making comments, doing about what some Muslims are doing?

What is it that you want or expect people to do?

  39. Tim 2014.10.10

    A. Cruz, I would suggest the radical conservative christian movement in this country is much more of a threat than any Muslim 4000 miles away.

  40. Bill Fleming 2014.10.10

Angelo is the guy who (supposedly) wants us to consider everyone as individuals, consider their unique circumstances and not pre-judge them. He's against stereotyping, and has made passionate appeals here for his imprisioned nephew.

I'm starting to think he doesn't practice what he preaches.

  41. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.10.10

    Good grief, Angelo, seriously?

Rep. Olson's comments are racist, because she is playing to a stereotype based on appearance and accent. She perpetuates the birther lie, which is rooted in racial hatred of a black man in a position of authority.

Your statements do not appear on face racist; they are based on religious fear, hatred, and misunderstanding. Yes, some Muslims have perverted their faith to justify murder, violence, and war. So have some Christians. If your statement were logical, we could justify going to war to exterminate all theists.

If Muslim American is an oxymoron, so is Christian American. How can we trust the loyalty of any citizen who claims an overriding loyalty to some supreme being whose commands can trump any obligation of citizenship and civility?

  42. Lynn 2014.10.10

Angelo you are once again just baiting and Bill Fleming made an excellent point by pointing out the hypocrisy of your statements from the past and now. 21st Century Crusades. Yep! That's all we need. Judge one of the worlds largest religions by the actions of a small minority. What's next? Endless war? book burnings? modern day Inquisition? Do you realize how many atrocities have been caused in the name of religion?

  43. Roger Cornelius 2014.10.10

Is Angelo Cruz an American name?

  44. Roger Cornelius 2014.10.10

Anybody have any good jokes about Cruz's nephew murdering a defenseless woman and her child?

  45. Francie 2014.10.10

Governor Dennis Daugaard is condoning Betty Olson's racism and bigotry by not publicly condemning it.

  46. jerry 2014.10.10

Roger, Cruz is just supporting his corrupt buddy Rounds. Rounds wanted to release the beast but sane people said no way Jose.

  47. Craig 2014.10.10

Bill has a very valid point about feeding the trolls. Since they thrive on attention, it only stands to reason they will whither when they are ignored. That's probably why certain blogs don't get visitors or comments.

It is difficult to ignore such ignorance, but it is probably for the best.

  48. Angelo Cruz 2014.10.10

*What is it that you want or expect people to do?

    Listen. Learn. Live.

There is no need to bash a politician who made a joke that
recognizes the fact that the incompetant POTUS is a Muslim.

South Dakotans better wake up to the threat of Islam and stop defending Muslims whose desire is to dominate the world, including South Dakota.

  49. larry kurtz 2014.10.10

    Christofascism is Angelo.

  50. Angelo Cruz 2014.10.10

*I would suggest the radical conservative christian movement in this country is much more of a threat than any Muslim 4000 miles away.*

This is the epitome of absolute ignorance by the simple-minded whose demise is assured by those you defend.

    Wake up Tim!

Btw, Muslims are no longer 4,000 miles away. They are in our backyards seeking our annihilation.

  51. bearcreekbat 2014.10.10

Angelo, since your Christian religion is not really any different than the Islamic religion - they are both Abrahamic and both believe in a single God, why not just save yourself by converting to Islam? Or are you afraid you would be killed or tortured for eternity by the Christian God you worship if you converted to Islam? Talk about being between a rock and a hard place - no matter which religion you join, the other one threatens your demise!

  52. mike from iowa 2014.10.10

They are in our backyards seeking our demise. I think you have Muslims mixed up with crabgrass.

  53. Craig 2014.10.10

Angelo: "...recognizes the fact that the incompetant POTUS is a Muslim"

And the troll of hte day award goes to.... wait for it.... ANGELO CRUZ!

Please tell us sir - how do you feel about this honor? Surely you have found it difficult to step up your game in the light of some of the borderline insane commentary offered by your only true competitor Steve Sibson. Tell us Mr. Cruz, how many other blogs and websites have you had to comment on and how many thousands of comments have you had to publish in order to rise to this level of ignorance?

You're a true inspiration to bridge (basement)dwellers everywhere.

  54. Bill Fleming 2014.10.10

If this were my blog, Angelo would be banned from it. There is no room on a progressive discussion board for an idiot who thinks a twice duly elected president is a jihadist terrorist. Let him spew that disgusting vomit in someone else's lap.

Okay, actually, I'll up the ante. If Angelo is allowed to post here, I'm done contributing. No way I want anything with my name on it within eyesight of anything of his from this moment forward. See you all when his bullshit is gone.

  55. Lynn 2014.10.10

Bill these idiot trolls are a complete waste of time. They seek attention with their own lack of common social skills and hijack the hard work Cory has put into the blog and the serious effort put in by the contributors. My patience is low with this morons.

  56. Jenny 2014.10.10

I agree Bill, worse than the Sibbinator, and that says alot.

  57. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.10.10

Angelo and Betty Olson both contribute to one of the biggest racist lies of this century, the assertion, against all evidence, that the President follows a religion that he does not. The assertion is hateful because it arises from racism against the President. It is dangerous because it is false and promotes a sort of choose-your-own-reality thinking that leads to the destruction of all intelligent religious claims. It is religiously bigoted because it also foments the prejudice that being a Muslim is evil.

Bill, I can't bring myself to ban racists and bigots outright. I would welcome Rep. Betty Olson to join us, explain her beliefs, and take her lumps.

  58. Jenny 2014.10.10

There are higher rates of domestic violence among the hispanic popuation. Is that considered racist?

  59. Lynn 2014.10.10

Like Michelle Bachman who hopes we have WW3 so we can speed up the biblical end of times?

  60. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.10.10

...although as I think about it, various online forums do ban racist speech.

Jenny, comparisons are not valid here, because, on the issue of Barack Obama's religion, Betty and Angelo are repeating a proven falsehood.

  61. Jenny 2014.10.10

Actually, I was implying something else about Cruz. But I won't go there Cory....

  62. JeniW 2014.10.10

Angelo, you still have not stated what you want people to do with what they learn.

Please specify exactly what actions do you want people to do?

  63. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.10.10

Fareed Zakaria offers this relevant commentary:

"There is a cancer of extremism within Islam today. A small minority of Muslims celebrates violence and intolerance and harbors deeply reactionary attitudes toward women and minorities. While some confront these extremists, not enough do so, and the protests are not loud enough. How many mass rallies have been held against the Islamic State (also known as ISIS) in the Arab world today?" [Fareed Zakaria, "Let's Be Honest: Islam Has a Problem Right Now," Washignton Post, 2010.10.09]

But Zakaria says this "cancer" of extremism is a recent development, contradicting centuries of seemingly greater tolerance.

"Harris should read Zachary Karabell’s book “Peace Be Upon You: Fourteen Centuries of Muslim, Christian and Jewish Conflict and Cooperation.” What he would discover is that there have been wars but also many centuries of peace. Islam has at times been at the cutting edge of modernity, but like today, it has also been the great laggard. As Karabell explained to me, 'If you exclude the last 70 years or so, in general the Islamic world was more tolerant of minorities than the Christian world. That’s why there were more than a million Jews living in the Arab world until the early 1950s — nearly 200,000 in Iraq alone.'"

Christianity had its violent, ugly periods as well. How did Christianity get out of that rut? Not by telling people to abandon Christianity, says Zakaria.

"That is not how Christianity moved from its centuries-long embrace of violence, crusades, inquisitions, witch-burning and intolerance to its modern state. On the contrary, intellectuals and theologians celebrated the elements of the religion that were tolerant, liberal and modern, and emphasized them, while giving devout Christians reasons to take pride in their faith. A similar approach — reform coupled with respect — will work with Islam over time."

  64. Barry Smith 2014.10.10

Cory How about banning folks who come here just to disrupt the conversation? Any public forum that I have attended will escort such individuals to the door.

  65. Roger Cornelius 2014.10.10

A little more than a year ago South Dakota was attacked by terrorist in the form a major blizzard and government that was shutdown and couldn't help their citizens.
Kristi Noem and John Thune were at the center of that shutdown or terrorist attack because America had a black president.
It took a few years to get over 9/11 and subsequent terrorist attacks on Americans here and abroad. We'll always to protect against those kinds of attacks and foil them when we can. We can bury our dead and place structures.
Way out here in insolated South Dakota, my concern is that the Mike Rounds', Kristi Noem, John Thune will do this again only with long ranging consequences.
The tea party terrorists and the extreme Christian conservatives that use the Republican Party as a shield are a greater threat to South Dakota than IS and Bin Laden combined.

  66. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.10.10

Barry, you're asking me to put on some pretty grown-up pants. I'd rather play bouncer on politicians like Betty Olson than blog commenters... but I may have to invest that energy. I've deleted dirt bags in the past; I just don't do so lightly.

  67. Angelo Cruz 2014.10.10

“Peace Be Upon You: Fourteen Centuries of Muslim, Christian and Jewish Conflict and Cooperation." What he would discover is that there have been wars but also many centuries of peace.

Let's advance the truth because we are engaged in "Truth Wars" -

Muslims in the West regularly refer to Islam as the "religion of peace" yet this so-called religion of peace is responsible for over 90% of all fighting presently occurring in the world.

Taqiya in the Qur'an is the foundational basis for utilizing deception whenever necessary.

Muslims lie like a rug to simply advance Islam and it is sad that way too many Americans are falling for the ingenious deception created by the Qur'an to fool so many people.

This helps to explain why Islam will give birth to the Antichrist in the Last Days.

  68. grudznick 2014.10.10

Mr. Smith, I was once a bouncer in my much younger days, and I cannot do that work any more. But if Mr H here were to let me be a virtual bouncer, I could easily escort a few people to the door and I wouldn't even need to wear pants.

I say, Mr. H, let me be your back door dirty fellow to escort the riff to the porta. I will be your banishment man, sir, and I will accept the rule of no comments per your rule of employment.

  69. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.10.10

No, Angeloa, you're not engaged in a truth war. You're drunk on a weird cocktail of Bible and Hollywood that makes you think you're a warrior in some cosmic conflict, when really you're just a human, like the rest of us, living day to day, working, trying to keep food on the table in the midst of a world without grand scheme or plan or climaxing plot.

There are bad guys. There are good guys. There are a whole lot of regular guys. You are trying to create a prejudiced fantasy to fuel your soul with hate and pretend righteous combat. Your Christian faith should call you to something better, to a more honest and humble service to the real people around you, no matter what color or creed they are. Such faithful Christian action will do much, much more to stem any anti-Christian extremism than the lies and fantasies you're peddling here.

  70. Charlie Hoffman 2014.10.10

Cory this must be the most racist thing ever written on this blog. And some think Sibby and Kurtz are nuts.

Roger Cornelius wrote: A little more than a year ago South Dakota was attacked by terrorist in the form a major blizzard and government that was shutdown and couldn't help their citizens.
Kristi Noem and John Thune were at the center of that shutdown or terrorist attack because America had a black president.

What? Noem and Thune terrorists because of the color of another's skin. Wow!

  71. grudznick 2014.10.10

Mr. Hoffman, you are very young and just getting seasoned to this sort of world and you make some pretty good snack food, sir, but I don't think Mr. C is a racist at all. He is actually a pretty reasonable fellow when he is not putting on his victim hat but he is not more racist than most others and I would say less.

  72. jerry 2014.10.10

So then Mr. Hoffman, why did NOem and Thune shut down the government? If they did not do this because we have a black president, then why?

  73. grudznick 2014.10.10

Mr. Jerry, wasn't it that Harry Reid fellow who shut down the government? Mr. Thune is very powerful and could probably shut down the government if he wanted but young Ms. Noem, she by her ownself probably could not. If you think otherwise your brain is addled and you need to order your eggs a little harder. Less jiggly.

  74. Jana 2014.10.10

    .Dear National Media,

Welcome to the discussion on the growing scandal involving former governor and senate hopeful Mike Rounds. We're glad you're here.

Please ignore this Angelo character. He is not representative of South Dakotans on either the right or the left.

Personally, I think he is trying to audition for a spot on Fox & Friends...

Thanks again for visiting, and Rachel Maddow...if you're out there and looking for deeper insight into this dynamic election that could change the balance of the Senate...please get ahold of Cory our host here at the Madville Times. He's a great interview and has as much or more knowledge on the former governor's EB-5 scandal than anyone in the state.

C'mon grudz, you know full well I don't own a victim hat, I've explained racism from the perspective of my being Indian and have laid responsibility where it belongs when Indians are discriminated against. Victim is the last thing I am, more activist then racist.
Charlie Hoffman, you can take you fiend Republican outrage and stuff it where the sun don't shine. The most racist comment you have ever read of Madville Times, hardly, if you haven't read and apologized for Betty Olson's words, you are the racist.
People that know or have read my comments over the years know better than to call me a racist.
It is my belief that every Republican roadblock put up against President Obama in the last 6 years is race based.
Make this black president be the worst president in history so that we never have another one, right?
President Obama was targeted by racist Republicans from the first day of his presidency and they haven't let up, despite the fact he is achieving greatness for his real accomplishments that Republicans refuse acknowledge.
With the daily attacks on the president, mostly unfounded and hysterical, you have given him strength.
In the early days of his presidency you couldn't even John Boehner and Mitch McConnell to be in the same room with the president. Boehner continues to turndown invitations by the president.
I make no apologies Charlie Hoffman.

  76. Angelo Cruz 2014.10.11

Hey Bill, can you stay focused on the topic at hand and not deviate to other subjects that are irrelevant to this thread.

    Stay focused Bill.

I'm starting to think you may be suffering from the Old-Timers plague.

  77. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.10.11

Wrong, Angelo: Bill is perfectly focused and relevant in calling out your racism and falsehood in the same way that Joe Lowe is calling out Betty Olson.

  78. Angelo Cruz 2014.10.11

Cory, Rep. Olson's comments cannot be racist because Muslim is NOT a race, it is a name representing the religion he/she belongs to akin to being a Christian, which is NOT a race either.

*Yes, some Muslims have perverted their faith to justify murder, violence, and war.*

Some? Islamic scholars estimate there are approx. 300-400 million Muslims who adhere faithfully to the Qur'an and as far as they are concerned all other Muslims are not being faithful to their holy Qur'an.

The 19 Islamists who crashed into the WTC were NOT fanatical Muslims as many people who do not know a thing about Islam believe but were simple adherents to the Qur'an.

This sizeable Muslim figure mentioned above represents those individuals who are the ones who are practicing their religion true to form, they are NOT perverting anything.

The so-called moderate Muslims are akin to counterfeit Christians who say they believe but do not practice what the Bible commands.

Let me be clear, moderate Muslims are a nice group of people but they cannot be counted on to push-back and change Islamic ideology.

Cory, you are a smart guy, do not be fooled by Islam's claim of being 'peaceful' - that is baloney.

  79. Angelo Cruz 2014.10.11

Lyn, what are you talking about? What hypocrisy?

Do you mean like the one Progressive Liberals practice by saying they are tolerant except when it applies to Evangelical Christians?

    Don't make me laugh!

Crusaders? They were NOT Christian. They were butchers, murderers, rapists, thieves who were forgiven by the Pope for their bloody savagery. Unless they repented they dwell in hell.

*Do you realize how many atrocities have been caused in the name of religion?*

Do you realize that the religious were Jesus' greatest enemies?

  80. Bree S. 2014.10.11

I get the impression that Angelo had a very close relationship with his nephew.

  81. bearcreekbat 2014.10.11

Angelo, have you even read the Qur'an, or Koran, from cover to cover? If not, then your comments must be based on stereotypical prejudice, just like the stereotypical prejudice unfairly used against prisoners who claim rehabilitation. If you have read the Koran from cover to cover then you probably realize your statements are simply falsehoods.

As you know, I am an atheist, not an apologist for Islam nor any other religion. But before I could comfortably reject all the magical thinking of religions like Christianity and Islam I felt it necessary to study the key books of these religions.

After studying the Bible and the Koran from cover to cover, it is my impression that the Bible advocates much more violence and death against infidels than the Koran. Indeed, I saw very few passages in the Koran that could be interpreted to suggest violence against non-believers, in direct contrast with verses like Revelation 2-23 in the New Testament, where Jesus purportedly promises to kill Jezabel's children upon his return.

Perhaps it would benefit you to actually study the Islamic religion and the Koran before spewing out stereotypical hate against so many human beings who call themselves Muslims.

  82. Lynn 2014.10.11

He is a Florida troll that has been most likely been booted from numerous blogs nationally. I am so grateful people with his views are an extreme minority in our country though I would contribute a donation to airdrop him in Iraq/Syria where he can battle ISIS. Two extremists fighting it out!

  83. JeniW 2014.10.11

I participated in a series about different religions. At one of the sessions, we were asked to list the stereotype of those who practice Islam. The attendees mentioned the stereotypes, and the presenter wrote those comments on those big sheets of paper used at meetings. After the list was made the session came to a close.

At the next session, with the same attendees as in the first session, were asked to list the stereotypes of those who practice Christianity. Those stereotypes were recorded in the same manner as the ones about Islam.

After that was completed, all the sheets of paper about Islam and Christianity were put up for display. The stereotypes included the good, bad, and otherwise of both.

Almost word per word, the stereotypes of the two religions were exactly the same. I am willing to bet that those same stereotypes can be applied to people who practice other religion.

My point is that there are stereotypes about all groups of people

  84. lesliengland 2014.10.11

roger-a racist calls a non-racist a racist for calling out racist attacks. we see that fairly regularly here, in my short time. merlyn schutterlie, I think was his handle, said much the same here in the recent article on the GOTV effort state-wide for the Indian voters, after saying he grew up with Indians and they need to "cowboy-up" (my apologies to real cowboys, cowgirls and their children).

  85. Angelo Cruz 2014.10.11

*Governor Dennis Daugaard is condoning Betty Olson's racism and bigotry by not publicly condemning it.*

Moderate Muslims and Madville loyalists are condoning Islamic beheadings and pedophilia through Child Marriages by NOT publicly condemning it.

  86. Angelo Cruz 2014.10.11

Angelo, I would condemn Betty Olson if she beheaded anyone or forced a child into marriage. I condemn anyone who does so, for any reason.

Now, stop defending racist falsehood and bigotry. President Barack Obama is a Christian. Muslims do not deserve Betty Olson's stereotyping. South Dakotans should not tolerate such ill thinking and unhealthy speech. Joe Lowe is right: Betty Olson embarrasses this state. So do you, Angelo, alas.

  91. Angelo Cruz 2014.10.11

Please specify exactly what actions do you want people to do?*

1 - Learn the Truth about Muslims and Islam.

2 - Vote Islamic sympathizers out of office or not vote them into office.

3 - If you have children join the PTA and watch and guard the school house against Islamic teachings.

4 - Be vigilant at work against Islamic demands.

No one here is talking about banning folks with differing opinions, Angelo, we are talking about banning IDIOCY, which you have an abundance.

  103. Bree S. 2014.10.11

I guess Angelo got the weekend shift. It'll be "stay focused" and "stop deviating" til Monday.

  104. JeniW 2014.10.11

Angelo, certainly those are options, but should you not do what Jesus had done by visiting with all kinds of people (rich, poor, the good, the bad, and the ugly, the politicians, people of different teachings and beliefs, and even those who were in prison,) to spread his message? Visit with people whom you know practice Islam to spread Jesus' message.

If they will not listen to you, then do what Jesus did, leave, and shake the dust off your feet. (Matthew Chapter 10, verse 14)

I am thinking that with the approach that you are using here, you are not going to succeed in your efforts.

If I recall correctly, you used the same approach when advocating for your nephew. You created a lot of hard feelings, and were not very successful. In spite of that, a few people tried to understand your position, and gave you some constructive suggestions to consider.

  105. Angelo Cruz 2014.10.11

*Angelo, have you even read the Qur'an, or Koran, from cover to cover?*

*If you have read the Koran from cover to cover then you probably realize your statements are simply falsehoods.*

*After studying the Bible and the Koran from cover to cover, it is my impression that the Bible advocates much more violence and death against infidels than the Koran.*

Concerning this last sentence, why is it that I don't believe you.

Now, since you asked I will post but a few Qur'anic verses for your edification:

    Qur’an 2:8-10
In their (Non-Muslims) hearts is a disease; and Allah has increased their disease and grievous is the penalty they will incur, because they are false.

    Qur’an 76:4
"Lo! We have prepared for disbelievers chains, yokes and a blazing fire."

    Qur’an 58:5
Those who resist Allah and His Messenger will be crumbled to dust, as were those before them: for we have already sent down Clear Signs and the Unbelievers will have a humiliating Penalty

    Qur’an 2:89-90
The Curse of Allah is on those without faith (in Islam) Thus have they drawn wrath upon wrath on themselves and humiliating is the punishment of those who reject faith (Islam)

    Qur’an 5:33
The Punishment for those who oppose Allah and his messenger is Execution or Crucifixion or the cutting off of hands and feet from opposite sides or exile from the land

    Qur’an 9:29
Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the Last day, nor hold the forbidden which hath been forbidden by Allah and his messenger, nor acknowledge the Religion of Truth from among the People of the Book, until they pay the Jiziyah with willing submission. And feel themselves subdued.”

    Qur’an 8:12
Remember Thy Lord inspired the angels (with the message): "I am with you: give firmness to the believers, I will instill terror into the hearts of the unbelievers, Smite ye above their necks and smite all their fingertips of them."

    Qur’an 9:5
"Then, when the sacred months have passed, slay the idolaters wherever ye find them, and take them (captive), and besiege them and prepare for them each ambush. But if they repent and establish worship and pay the poor-due, then leave their way free. Lo! Allah is Forgiving, Merciful."

    Qur’an 9:73
Prophet, make war on the unbelievers and the hypocrites and deal rigorously with them. Hell shall be their Home: an evil fate.

    Qur’an 47:4
When you meet the unbelievers in the Jihad strike off their heads and, when you have laid them low, bind your captives firmly. Then grant them their freedom or take ransom from them, until War shall lay down her burdens.

    Qur’an 40:68-73
Those who have denied the Book and the message We sent through Our apostles shall realize the truth hereafter: when, with chains and shackles round their necks, they shall be dragged through scalding water and then burnt in the fire of Hell.

    Qur’an 76:1-5
For the unbelievers, we have prepared chains and fetters and a blazing Fire.

Qur’an 73:12 We have in store for the unbelievers heavy fetters and a blazing fire, choking food and harrowing torment: on the day when the earth shall quiver with all its mountains, and the mountains crumble into heaps of shifting sand.

    Qur’an 69: 31-37
And burn ye him in the blazing fire. Further, make him march in a chain, whereof the length is seventy cubits. This was he that would not believe in Allah Most high and would not encourage the feeding of the indignant. So no friend hath he here this day. Nor hath he any food except the corruption from the washing of wounds.

    Qur’an 69:30-37
We shall say: 'Lay hold of him and bind him. Burn him in the fire of Hell, then fasten him with a chain seventy cubits long. For he did not believe Allah the tremendous, and urged not on the feeding of the wretched. Today he shall be friendless here; filth shall be his food, the filth which sinners eat.

I hope you will absorb these verses and think about them.

I assure you there are many more verses that are just as dangerous.

  106. larry kurtz 2014.10.11

Charlie, your own lack of sanity damns your opinion. Btw: I could do Betty.

I can assure you that whoever conducted such a series as well as all who participated were completely ignorant of both religions.

It is painfully obvious that you know next to nothing about Christianity and absolutely nothing about Islam.

I have posted Qur'anic verses above. Take the time to read them. I will post more evidence below.

If you want to learn, read. If you want to remain ignorant, don't read, the choice is up to you. I have done my part.

    Islam is a lie.

    Islam abuses women.

    Islam is a major cult.

    Islam means submission.

    Islam suffocates freedom.

    Islam violates human dignity.

    Islam hates Christians and Jews.

Islam is the enemy of civilization.

Islam attacked DC, NYC & 3,000 people.

Islam is about world domination, nothing more, nothing less.

    They're not happy in Gaza.
    They're not happy in Egypt.
    They're not happy in Libya.

    They're not happy in Morocco.
    They're not happy in Iran.
    They're not happy in Iraq.

    They're not happy in Yemen.
    They're not happy in Afghanistan.
    They're not happy in Pakistan.

    They're not happy in Syria.
    They're not happy in Lebanon.

    So, where are they happy?

    They're happy in Australia.
    They're happy in England.
    They're happy in France.

    They're happy in Italy.
    They're happy in Germany.
    They're happy in Sweden.

    They're happy in Norway.
    They're happy in the USA.

They're happy in every country that is not Islamic!

*President Barack Obama is a Christian.*

Really! How do you know this if YOU are NOT Christian?

Thanks for giving me this opportunity to post Obama's statements below concerning Islam, NOT Christianity.

Cory, why do you think he would say this if he were really Christian?

  112. Angelo Cruz 2014.10.11

Barack Hussein Obama quotes regarding Islam:

    1. “The future must not belong to those who slander the prophet of Islam”

    2. “The sweetest sound I know is the Muslim call to prayer”

    3. “We will convey our deep appreciation for the Islamic faith, which has done so much over the centuries to shape the world — including in my own country.”

    4. “As a student of history, I also know civilization’s debt to Islam.”

    5. “Islam has a proud tradition of tolerance.”

    6. “Islam has always been a part of America”

    7. “We will encourage more Americans to study in Muslim communities”

    8. “These rituals remind us of the principles that we hold in common, and Islam’s role in advancing justice, progress, tolerance, and the dignity of all human beings.”

    9. “America and Islam are not exclusive and need not be in competition. Instead, they overlap, and share common principles of justice and progress, tolerance and the dignity of all human beings.”

    10. “I made it clear that America is not – and will never be – at war with Islam.”

    11. “Islam is not part of the problem in combating violent extremism – it is an important part of promoting peace.”

    12. “So I have known Islam on three continents before coming to the region where it was first revealed”

    13. “In ancient times and in our times, Muslim communities have been at the forefront of innovation and education.”

    14. “Throughout history, Islam has demonstrated through words and deeds the possibilities of religious tolerance and racial equality.”

    15. “Ramadan is a celebration of a faith known for great diversity and racial equality”

    16. “The Holy Qur'an tells us, ‘O mankind! We have created you male and female; and we have made you into nations and tribes so that you may know one another.’”

    17. “I look forward to hosting an Iftar dinner celebrating Ramadan here at the White House later this week, and wish you a blessed month.”

    18. “We’ve seen those results in generations of Muslim immigrants – farmers and factory workers, helping to lay the railroads and build our cities, the Muslim innovators who helped build some of our highest skyscrapers and who helped unlock the secrets of our universe.”

    19. “That experience guides my conviction that partnership between America and Islam must be based on what Islam is, not what it isn’t. And I consider it part of my responsibility as president of the United States to fight against negative stereotypes of Islam wherever they appear.”

    20. “I also know that Islam has always been a part of America’s story.”

  113. Bill Fleming 2014.10.11

JeniW, my friend, actually those suggested behaviors of Angelo's aren't valid options at all. They are in direct violation of the very 1st Amendment Mr. Cruz is hiding behind.

To prove it to yourself, substitute any other religious name you want wherever he's used the words 'Muslim' or 'Islam.'

Indeed, those suggestions may well be what Mr. Cruz is all about, but that kind of racism, xenophobia, bigotry and prejudice certainly isn't what America or the US Constitution is all about. In fact it's just about as anti-American as a person can get.

Sorry, I didn't want to post on this thread any more, but this guy is seriously off his rocker. I'm thinking releasing his nephew from prison so he can hang around his fear blind, bigoted, supremacist, facist uncle is probably the worst thing we could do for him. He needs to stay right where is.

  114. JeniW 2014.10.11

    Hello Angelo,

Welcome to the Madville Time. Now leave.

This is not your party and it is not your house. Don't come in like drunk at the end of a bar invading a dinner party. You don't live here and you haven't earned the right.

Although, might I suggest a quaint little hole-in-the-wall that would be more to your liking. It's over at the SDWC...tell them we sent you and have fun!

*No one here is talking about banning folks with differing opinions, Angelo, we are talking about banning IDIOCY, which you have an abundance.*

So exactly what do you call this? Are you in absolute denial or is it that you're just not reading?

Barry Smith - Cory How about banning folks who come here just to disrupt the conversation?

So now you equate idiocy with differing opinions huh?

  127. Angelo Cruz 2014.10.11

    Now that was really deep!

  128. Angelo Cruz 2014.10.11

Not one valid, authentic or original response to my powerful rebuttals.

Remember you were warned here first!

    Jesus loves you!

Larry, Grud either said I'm a tasty snack or I make tasty snacks. It would appear to me that I'm not alone here in getting eaten alive if the former.

  130. Charlie Hoffman 2014.10.11

Bree, it honestly is good to see your name again. I was wondering where you have been.

  131. mike from iowa 2014.10.11

Past time to ignore the igno-rant.

  132. Jenny 2014.10.11

Angelo, was your nephew the first murderer in your family?

  133. Jenny 2014.10.11

It is time to ban this Hispanic lunatic, Cory.

  134. Roger Cornelius 2014.10.11

I would amend that to is your nephew the first murderer in your family to kill an unarmed woman and her unborn child?

  135. Bree S. 2014.10.11

When the SDGOP was gerrymandering Nelson and other Republicans out of their districts, did they do the same to Betty Olson? .. Steve Hickey?

  136. Bree S. 2014.10.11

I guess the White Power Country Club can say whatever they want, no matter how much it embarrasses South Dakota.

LOL, busted dude. I figured as much. Hell, no wonder he and Rounds are bro's, birds of a feather and all of that. Cruz probably set up the rest of the enterprise with the gals or guys over there in the Philippine Islands.

  139. Bill Fleming 2014.10.12

Angelo is the KeystoneXL of the internet. Give him a little pipeline through your site, and he'll drop a huge steaming pile of crap all over it, every single time.

  140. mike from iowa 2014.10.12

Give this Angelo credit. He wasn't soliciting prostitution,he was just sending out advertisements. According to mhs there is a difference.

Angelo, chill out. It's one thing to offer policy critiques abot the President. It's another to perpetuate the lie, as Betty Olson does under the guise of "joke", that he is not a Christian. If you can maintain that the President is not a Christian, I can maintain that neither you nor Betty Olson are Christians. Your professions of Christian faith are just lies, meant to deceive us, and more clearly indict your fealty to the Bible than any of Barack Obama's good-faith actions to move America forward.

As for your quotes purporting to show President Obama's faith, well, not one of them says, "I follow Islam and not Christianity." Not one of those statements is logically inconsistent with Christianity. President Obama has made numerous other statements explicitly asserting his Christianity. His public statements are far more voluminous and at least as dispositive of his Christianity as all the things you and Betty Olson have said publicly put together. I don't have to be a Christian to be able to read and understand the denotative meaning of words.

Angelo, your tirade here achieves no good for Betty Olson, for your own causes, or for the enlightenment of the masses. Let's end this distraction and move on to real voting issues.
