A couple weeks ago, Kevin Woster wondered when Larry Pressler's friend Kevin Schieffer would throw some money toward his old boss's U.S. Senate candidacy.
Schieffer is now throwing, forming a Super PAC to spend "a couple hundred thousand" on this ad with former staffers sticking up for the old man:
Go get 'em, boss. I say this as a devoted Weiland supporter: you may have just heard the best battle cry of the South Dakota election. Add the gentle tones, the nostalgia—and oh my gosh, the 80's hair!—and you have a beautiful if absolutely substanceless response to every possible critique that anyone might launch against Pressler. Rick Weiland can say Pressler is weak against Big Oil and weak on Social Security; Mike Rounds can say Pressler will back President Obama's liberal policies; Gordon Howie can say Pressler ate too much Camembert in Paris. Pressler can just flash this ad like a snazzy fake ID at the club: Go ahead and make those negative ads! They just prove what a nice guy I am!
Arrggh! That's not debate! That's bunnies and babies and getting people to vote because their hearts flutter!
Dang... and that's a pretty smart use of $200,000 in a race where voters' heads may be spinning from acrimony and acronyms.
Told tonight of Schieffer's investment in his campaign, Pressler blurted, "Oh God, that's awfully nice." When he recovers from that shock, Pressler can turn to Stuart Rothenberg, who opined Wednesday that the mostly unanswered GOP and Dem attacks on Pressler "appear to have worked," and channel Captain Steven Hiller in Independence Day and shout, "I ain't heard no fat lady!"
Pressler was a director of one of the world's scummiest securities firms, Sky Capital, whose principals are now serving time in the federal clink. I think he was duped or bought off--either way I'd say is judgement is deplorable. Not a fan of Senator Pressler; but, I have to say this is one of the most effective ads I have seen so far.
The lovely lady popping back in at the end with the "go get em boss," really put it over the top for me.
The more you get to know Pressler, the more you realize he's along for the ride. Or maybe he is the ride. Certainly not the mastermind screwing investors for $600k at a crack. More like the hapless worm that got put on someone else's hook.

I can tell I shouldn't be posting on this blog, because the big guns have some really good posts on here this morning. But I just have to tell you, Disgusted, how disappointed I am in you. I had to go back and look at the author of your remark. I was sure that it was Grudz. I would have thought that he is the only one I have seen on these blogs who would use the excuse of a pretty lady being the reason he liked an ad.
I'd say she's worth the tipping point for Rounds/Pressler. Isn't that what it's all about in SD?
BTW, a neighbor of mine(more conserv than I by a long shot) stopped by. Out of eight guys in his church group, all but the one Dem were former Rounds guys voting Pressler. At my official Lewies supper event, of the three of us two were still voting Rounds to assure a senate seat. My reply was, if we have to elect a dishonest fella to save the senate we don't have a senate that can be saved. Mud on SD's for thinking like that.

When Pressler's "residence" was at issue, his defense seemed odd in light of his "honest" politician mantra. Basically, he is saying "I lied" to Washington officials to get a real estate tax break by claiming his principal residence was in DC, while he really lives here in SD.
It would appear that Thune paramour, Jon Lauck, is appearing in an advert for Mr. Pressler.

BCB, on the residence thing, isn't the language something like you have to "inhabit" a home in the state "when elected." i.e. You could run for Senator of Oregon, and still be living here, as long as you moved into your Oregon home by election day. (Not that I think you should ;-)
@Lanny V, You've been reading Gridz & IP's sexist rants way too long. You misunderstood my innocent comment. While the lady is lovely, the way she made the comment "go get em boss" was entirely endearing and showed a very personal side to their support that can not be faked by political prostitutes who claim one moment to be limited government Republicans and then the next advocating for pragmatic grow government moderate Rounds as being a great conservative Republican candidate to send to DC to address the problems there.
Bill, I think you are correct in your analysis for the purpose of qualifying to be a Senator.
My point, however, does not deal with whether Pressler is qualified to be a SD Senator. Rather, it is about Pressler's response when asked where he resided, SD or DC.
It seems a bit disingenous for Larry to claim that the residence owned by he and his wife in D.C. constitutes their "principal residence" so they can "receive the homestead deduction, a generous tax break meant for people who use their D.C. home as their “principal residence,” according to the D.C. Office of Tax and Revenue." [source Politico].
The Presslers get a large tax break on their DC home, even though Larry claims that he actually lives or resides in SD. Pressler attempts to justify this by claiming his wife lives in D.C. and he lives in S.D. It would be interesting to see the paperwork they filed in D.C. to obtain the homestead tax break.
Even if the Presslers' application for the tax break actually does claim he and his wife live in different states, this seem to be a classic case of gaming the system.

Mr. Tsitrian's comment reminds me of the time Thune sat on the MetaBank board while Dan Nelson his campaign manager or treasurer (I can't remember which) took MetaBank for a ride. Dan Nelson was one of the world's scummiest car dealers, and he went to the poky too. So maybe that makes Thune just plain stupid? Or maybe he & Pressler are smart to be on the end of the deal that makes the money instead of the end that loses the money. How much accountability do directors of big companies really have? Not much from what I've seen.
I drank a few beers with Liz Baker back in the day down in Vermillion. She definitely delivers the catch phrase of the commercial. Overall very well done.
Why was Larry Pressler begging for homemade signs on last night's debate when he has a PAC that could make them for him?
That's that whole independent expenditure/PAC thing. The Schieffer/former staffer's PAC isn't Pressler's team to boss around. He's not supposed to be able to call them and say, "Hey! Make me a thousand signs!"
Schieffer's investment doesn't match the outside investment in Weiland and Rounds... but given how close Pressler has gotten on reputation and a shoestring, maybe a little green goes a long way?
I was thinking today about the EB-5 deal about being able to get a "green card" for $500,000.
Most people who come to the U.S. legally, have to jump through a bunch of hoops to do so. From what I understand, it is not an easy and quick process.
Got me to thinking that the $500,000.00 is not an "investment," it is a bribe to avoid jumping through all those hoops. Or is there a bunch of hoops that those with $500,000.00 have to jump through?
In SD's case, they threw their money away and no green card. Cannot imagine with that kind of money disappearing they wouldnt put a squeeze on someone, unless they've been paid back in another manner.
Jeni W, the 500k is for an economic development that creates 10 jobs for Americans. That is why the fact that some of the CAFOs and probably some other economic development projects that hired illegal immigrants, broke the law. I was glad to see Howie hitting MMR hard on that issue last night.
I thought strongly, when I shut down my business in 1993, about emigrating to Canada, but that was one of the ways that one could earn points to emigrate to Canada. They were then and probably still were getting a very large Chinese immigration at that time. Not sure what the amount was but I remember that it was tied to providing jobs.
Mr. Stricherz, I don't really know what a CAFO is or why you were forced to shut down your CAFO back in grudznick's hay-day but I am interested in why you did not emigrate to Canada. Canada is a fine place. You might fit in well there. Many others here emigrated and like their homes too.
