Senator Johnson: Weiland Already Defended Ellsworth; GOP Attacks False

If Senator Tim Johnson was planning to engage in the climax of the campaign to replace him, I thought he would simply match Senator John Thune's pro-Rounds pitch with a warm, fuzzy pro-Weiland ad. This evening, an hour before the televised Senate candidates' debate on SDPB, Senator Johnson surprises us with a broadside fired at Rounds and the South Dakota Republican Party for politicizing Ellsworth Air Force Base and getting their facts wrong:

I know from my own personal experience that the paid political advertisement being run by candidate Mike Rounds claiming that Rick Weiland wants to close Ellsworth Air Force Base is false. I worked directly with Rick Weiland and Senator Tom Daschle for over a decade to defend Ellsworth Air Force Base from closure. Rick handled briefing materials for us and worked tirelessly as state director to defend, not to close, Ellsworth Air Force Base. I wish former Governor Bill Janklow were still with us because he too knew of and benefited from Rick Weiland's work to protect Ellsworth.

I will give Mr. Rounds the benefit of the doubt and assume he was unaware of these facts. But if his campaign continues to air this completely false advertising about Rick Weiland, it will prove beyond the shadow of a doubt that it and Mr. Rounds are more concerned about political gain than about Ellsworth's future.

Anyone who has ever worked to defend Ellsworth knows that politicizing the discussion of that critical base is the surest way to jeopardize its future, and that is what this kind of irresponsible political advertising does [Senator Tim Johnson, quoted in South Dakota Democratic Party press release, 2014.10.23].

Senator Johnson doesn't just point out the factual and moral errors of Team Rounds's charge that a Senator Weiland would throw B-1B bombers in the trashbin. Senator Johnson establishes Weiland's past participation in preserving Ellsworth. Senator Johnson also quite boldly invokes the ghost of Bill Janklow to scare his descendant Republicans from telling any more lies about Weiland's commitment to national defense and local economic development.

Thank you, Senator Johnson, for speaking up!

This statement of fact by respected Senator Johnson serves a greater purpose than a warm cozy photograph.
Thank you Senator Johnson, Rick Weiland will continue your integrity as the next South Dakota senator.

    list of rounds lies:
    1. B1B
    2. 8 separate EB5 investigations cleared every aspect (except Immigration Dept. triggered FBI ACTIVE INVESTIGATION)

The ads about Rounds "selling citizendhip" are factually inaccurate, and unnecessarily so. The fscts sre bad enough. This one is factually inaccurste akso. Why must everybody lie in campaigns?

  4. Rorschach 2014.10.23

Man! Where's an English Teacher when you need one?

  5. lesliengland 2014.10.23

"auctioning" green cards or visas may be accurate if there were a limited number available (see vox.com easy citizenship cartoon diagram) and joop padded fees so that the highest total price was achieved. we shall see what developes as daugaard's cover-up erodes. it will then be added to "round's list of lies"(copyright).

Joop ran off with files from NSU/Regents that may be SD property. Daugaard and Jackley should explain this.

  6. grudznick 2014.10.23

Wouldn't it really by "Rounds' List of Lies" (c) 2014 grudzick

Say, did you notice that Mr. Pressler acquitted himself well and keeps impressing more and more people? I have to believe he probably shoots up 5 points after that debate, Mr. Rounds stays about steady, and Mr. Howie loses another point. No way he gets the godless heathen vote, and the godless heathens are starting to pay more attention.

  7. Roger Cornelius 2014.10.23

    grudz,
How did you like the way Gordon did Rick's dirty work on putting it to Rounds on EB-5?

  8. grudznick 2014.10.23

Nobody ever said that Mr. Howie isn't smart or isnt' in cahoots with Mr. Wieland. He's a treacherous overgodding money-grubbing tax cheat, but he's smart.

How did you like the way nobody laid a blow on Mr. Pressler?

  9. Roger Cornelius 2014.10.23

Not laying a blow on Pressler was amusing since Pressler was claiming to be attacked by both sides. I still haven't seen much of Democratic attack on Pressler.

  10. Douglas Wiken 2014.10.23

I saw no real bozo speak at the SDPB-TV Senatorial debate. I did notice that Pressler blinked his eyes nearly continuously. That may cause some people to worry about his truthfulness. Howie may be the best speaker of the bunch but his message content is another thing. Weiland did OK, but he did not hit the XL Pipeline to deny that issue for Rounds. I was working on something else while it was on, so I may look at the DVD tomorrow to see it again.

Rounds was spewing the same nonsense attacks on Obama, Affordable Care Act, etc. I have no idea what percentage of SD voters detest Obama and Affordable Care however.

Pressler actually closed by portraying himself as David with a slingshot against giants in PAC clothes.

As I wrote already, not much very surprising about the "debate".

  11. Jana 2014.10.23

Monty is tweeting that Rounds blew off South Dakotans after the debate, but did have time to do a national interview...

His team is really putting a bubble around him.

Probably not too excited about the latest revelations or responding to the lecture and scolding from Tim Johnson pointing out the blatant lie in going after Weiland on Ellsworth AFB.

Not much to say after getting caught in another petty lie.

  12. grudznick 2014.10.23

Mr. Pressler is being attacked by both sides and the goofy rear-crazies, but he seems immune to their strikes. He smiles and dodges artfully and even when it looks like he is slipping it is a fortuitous duck as a frying pan flies past where his head just was. Was he wearing a pocket square? I love dapper pocket squares and that will earn him votes from the polite crowd.

  13. Jenny 2014.10.23

Howie and Weiland had it planned that Howie would go for blood. The attack was well done and Howie deserves a handshake. Frankly, I was disappointed that Weiland hardly said a thing about the Rounds scandal.

  14. JeniW 2014.10.23

Jenny, maybe because Howie was doing the honors in such a good way, Rick did not feel the need to detract from Howie comments, or getting the credit, and/or did not have anything new or different to add.

Sometimes, remaining silent can be a wise choice.

  15. Deb Geelsdottir 2014.10.23

Grudz, I didn't know you were so interested in fashion. Your "pocket squares" comment surprised me. (Personally, I think they ought to just call them "handkerchiefs", like the old days.) Why don't you send us a photo of your sartorially splendiferous self?

  16. Roger Cornelius 2014.10.23

    JeniW.
You maybe right about Weiland, he appeared to be above the fray, remember that Howie's attack was attacking a fellow Republican.

  17. Rorschach 2014.10.23

I think the Rounds campaign is tremendously worried about Pressler. I don't believe the "internal polls" they are releasing showing Pressler fading to a distant 3rd. That's sure not what I hear from people on the street. Add those "internal polls" to the list of lies Rounds told. His campaign is trying to create a false perception of Pressler fading in the hope that people will believe the lie and it will become a self-fulfilling prophesy. As election day approaches, and Rounds fails to shed the albatross around his neck, and Pressler continues to be the nice, moderate elder statesman Pressler will pull away doubting Republicans from Rounds and tons of independents.

Hey, didn't the GOP put out a press release a while back saying the investigation was finished and it cleared Rounds? Add that to the lies. The FBI investigation is still going.

  18. Winston 2014.10.24

Rorschach is right. This Weiland/Ellsworth ploy is a Wadhams gimmick to make Weiland the opponent rather than Pressler. Because they would rather run against a liberal Democrat than a moderate Independent (When was the last time a Republican feared a Democrat over a Pennington County issue?) - Especially, when their candidate is surrounded with an air of controversy and scandal and the independent candidate is a palatable alternative for many wayward moderate and conservative voters.

The one thing we must all keep in mind is that Pressler is either a voter's first choice or their second, but the other two major candidates are either the first or third choice of all of the voters.

The fact that the Koch brothers are beginning to spend money against Pressler only, I think, speaks even more loudly to this thesis.

The Wadhams/Ellsworth strategy is Patton at Calasis, but the real battle will be at Normandy and the invading force will not be Team Rounds, rather it will be the disillusioned moderate and conservative voters who will most likely fold to Pressler on election day.

Outside of the "leak" of the recent obviously bias Rounds internal tracking poll, there have been no real polls in this race for a good week now, and why? Because most likely the polls would only serve Pressler; and he does not have the money nor the influence with the right and left dominated east coast pollsters to help release most likely what I believe are the true and hidden trending realities of this race...

deep. kornackie at MSNBC calls it the great nerd fight of 2014.

rohr-its on the list, no. 2. there is a juicy no. 3 but i keep forgetting what it is. something involving the barth "preservation of EB5 evidence" lawsuit. it'll come back to me, but grudz for some odd reason, has stolen the list.

  20. Bill Fleming 2014.10.24

Noticing that DWC has nothing on this TJ/Ellsworth statement, nor did PP post anything on the debate.

Probably having trouble coming up with the right visual.

    Here's an idea.

How about one of Mike out behind the woodshed, with Gordon Howie whupping his arse with an EB-5 paddle, and Tim Johnson waiting in line behind him with an Ellsworth willow switch.

Kind of an animated, JibJab montage thingy.

  21. mike from iowa 2014.10.24

Is it within the realm of possibility that Senator Johnson's health won't allow him to actively campaign for Dems?

  22. jerry 2014.10.24

You bring up the most interesting fact mike from iowa, Senator Johnson is retiring from the senate due to health reasons. The last campaign he ran was very limited so you are correct, it is within reason to see that his health is not the best to go on the campaign trail. His voice of support for Weiland is clearly strong and his kick to the balls of Rounds, was done very well.

Obama is currently using the BONE's from Dyess and soon Ellsworth to rain hell on ISIS in Syria. The bombers are literally the last thing protecting the kurdish city of Kobane from being massacred by genocidal terrorists. And with accurate ground-spotting from our new YPG ally, the USAF are getting the job done.

And all while this is happening we find John Thune paying heed to the disastrous plan to allow the turkish army invade northern syria and occupy the kurdish cantons. These Turkish soldier are sitting on their border 200 yards from this town, arresting kurdish refugees and spraying tear gas to keep the press away.

Ending this USAF mission is something Turkey would really love to see happen, because Turkey is supporting ISIS. Thune should re-consider his support for their dubious strategy.

Bill, Pat Powers has been too busy commenting on the KELO blog under the article about the FBI agent endorsing Pressler. Predictably, Powers says his own retired FBI agent dad won't be voting for Pressler. Apparently Pat can't find any persuadable voters writing posts on his own blog so he's reaching out and too busy to do DWC these days.

  25. jana 2014.10.24

Pitiful Pat Powers is channeling his best Saul Allinsky?

  26. jana 2014.10.24

Pat must be manic with the KELOLAND report that more people are investing in Rick than Mike.

People have followed the money of the SDGOP and decided it's best spent elsewhere.

  27. jerry 2014.10.24

The Rounds radio ad says that "Remember back when the liberals were wanting to close Ellsworth" or words to that notion. I guess the radio man is correct, Ronald Reagan and George HW Bush and then William Clinton were all liberals, who knew? http://fas.org/sgp/crs/natsec/97-305.pdf

I heard that a couple of times and was glad to be on the Rosebud to listen to KINI and look at some beautiful sights. Will hang around here for a few days and then back to listening to the little liar, Rounds.

  28. Roger Cornelius 2014.10.24

Republican Okla. Sen. Inhoff was with Mike Rounds today perpetuating the big lie, Rounds is just amazing, after being set straight by Sen. Johnson, he doesn't shut up, he just goes on lying.
The SDDP is preparing a full page in response to the Rounds lie in this Sunday's Rapid City Journal.
If you can help pay for this ad, please go the SDDP website.

there's a cartoon for yah-tim (sorry tim) kickin' rounds who drops "papers, papers, his papers" (EB5, B1B pic, joop's autograph, use your imagination...) all over the floor (foreground). uncle sam pushing wheelchair, scowling at rounds papers.

  30. 90 Schilling 2014.10.25

Rounds is a proven leader at cutting self defense funding by cutting the National Guard from West River SD in 2008.

  31. leslie 2014.10.27

Rounds doubles down on scaring SD voters into believing Rick is closing EAFB during a shooting war in another full page RCJ ad Sunday, along with bragging HE is closing EPA. Drama, drama.

42% to Rick's 33% - is that where we are? How did rounds increase while pressler dropped out of sight last week? Time for MSNBC to come back and focus on Rounds/Koch/tea party tactics, Rick's strengths, note Pressler's disappearance, and make SD a blue win in the Senate race.

  32. jerry 2014.10.27

@leslie, the only reason the little twerp put the full page in is to put some jingle in the coffers of the RCJ, you know they are a little short of cash. This way, he can purchase the endorsement of the paper and act all surprised just like I am sure he did when the gun dudes gave him a hug. It is all scripted, just wait until this weekend for the big non finale. As Larry says, "We can win this!"
