Chamber Biz Caucus Prefers Governor Michels, President Clinton

Bob Mercer notes who would get the Chamber of Commerce Business Caucus vote for Governor and President. Right now, these Main Streeters' top picks are Matt Michels and Hillary Clinton.

The gubernatorial straw poll rejects the perhaps conventional view purveyed in the media that the GOP is bracing for a three-way gubernatorial contest among Attorney General Marty Jackley, District 12 Rep. Mark Mickelson, and eyelash-battingly coy Congresswoman Kristi Noem. Lt. Gov. Michels and Democrats' great white hope Stephanie Herseth Sandlin both got more straw poll votes than those three GOP contenders.

If spelling counts, the Business Caucus's misspelling of Noem's name as Kristie suggests they aren't paying as much attention to her as she might like. Only one person picked Shantel Krebs for governor, versus thirteen for Noem, but by gum, the ballot spelled Shantel's name right!

On the Presidential side, while the preference for Clinton is suprising, the Chamber predictably prefers mainstream moderates like Hillary and second-place corporatist and dynastirian Jeb Bush. The next Bush gets more votes than any two of the five wild-eyed ideologues on the Business Caucus's list—Rand Paul, Scott Walker, Ben Carson, Marco Rubio, and Rick Perry. Clinton gets more votes than all five right wingnuts together. (I invite debate as to whether we ought to include Mike Huckabee in that list.)

(Bonus liberal hope: there are three Chamber members who would vote for Elizabeth Warren and one for James Webb.)

And John Thune? He appears to have fallen into the Chamber's blind spot. They don't hint at all at Thune aspiring to anything other than the job he has right now in the U.S. Senate. (Gee, Rep. Gosch: maybe your embarrassing apology for the Daschle Rule was all for nought!)

But don't read too much into these numbers. The Business Caucus polled about 130 members. Only 84 named a favorite gubernatorial candidate; only 81 named a Presidential pick. The Business Caucus members aren't nearly as interested in elections 1.5 and 3.5 years off as they are on the issues before the Legislature right now. We'll talk about the Chamber's Legislative opinions in a separate post, coming soon!

Their approval of Hilary Clinton is one of the reasons I have concerns about her. How beholden is she to Big Business? How much is chosen behavior to gain support and money? Is there a difference between what she says and what she would actually do, especially in a second term?

BTW, these are concerns I have with every candidate that I'd seriously consider, except Elizabeth Warren. I believe she is exactly what she says and does. She is congruent.

The Republican candidates in the race thus far are not worthy of my consideration.

re: daschle rule-it appears gosch is alot like wisc. gov. walker. the daschle rule prevented tom from doing what they wanna make sure thune CAN NOW do.

as said earlier thread, walker ran saying PRIVATE unions were his partners, not intended victims, yet now, he has completely changed his position and is ready to sign a new GOP bill against private unions.

this same approach procedurally and substantively is COMING TO SD brought to you by a deceptively tactical SDGOP.

  3. Tim 2015.02.25

I've said it before, I'll keep saying it, don't pay attention to what republicans say, watch what they do.

  4. leslie 2015.02.25

tim-did we miss u last night? penndems and SDP had guuuud meeting and follow-up. lotz happening!

  5. leslie 2015.02.25

@brennencenter-book review: Corporations "Too big to jail"by brandon garrett-how humans, especially minorities as we see here in SD, are prosecuted by elected officials to the full extent of the law (except for Trayvon Martin and the "Allen 57" perps for GOP purposes, for example), while corporations (who not persons...or, do we know for sure??) are not.

Where have all the good men gone
And where are all the gods?
    Where's the street-wise Hercules

Isn't there a white knight upon a fiery steed?
Late at night I toss and I turn and I dream of what I need

I need an Elizabeth Warren or Bernie Sanders type of anti-business hero.

You're welcome BCB. Mike is very funny.

  9. mike from iowa 2015.02.25

Sorry bcb and Deb,gotta nip this in the bud. The above verse is from a Jim Steinman song from the movie Footloose sung by Bonnie Tyler.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7f_HsjpSVaI

If you are familiar with Steinman/Meatloaf collaborations then the fact that this song is over-everythinged in Meatloaf fashion should be no surprise.

My apologies to everyone for leaving the wrong impression about this.

Shantel Krebs you got to be kidding me .

  12. Bill Dithmer 2015.02.25

I got my chuckle for the day Deb.I guess the numbers dont shake me up much, but man is it early.

I would really like to see Warren give Hillary a run, but you know that isn't gonna happen. The big dog in the hunt knows where the bones are buried, she has more political clout, and will be calling in her IOUs.

And then there is the money. There is nobody better at either raising, or spending campaign funds then the machine that will be known as Billary.

If this was a compitition coon hunt, we would say that Clinton dog was rough under the tree.

Huck wont leave that cushy pontification pulpit he preaches from every day. Would he like to be president? I'm betting he'd like to be president, but keep his radio show.

The only way Jeb could loose the nomination would be if he got caught having sex with the maid, twice!

The only way Hillary could loose the nomination would be if she got caught making out with Castro, while wearing a dress.

Dont worry about JT, he might run for the other chamber, but he wont risk a country wide vote when he can feed his appetite for power in the state of SD with a sure win anyplace he wants to run.

I'll have to agree somewhat with Blindman, Jeb Bush has the Republican nomination already sown up, remember how his brother did it? George had the money lined up before he even announced his candidacy.

  14. Winston 2015.02.26

Mickelson is in 13. Don't be trying to put in 12….. ;-)

"...the GOP is bracing for a three-way gubernatorial contest among Attorney General Marty Jackley, District 12 Rep. Mark Mickelson, and eyelash-battingly coy Congresswoman Kristi Noem."

Three people in that sentence, but only the female is descriptively demeaned and objectified.

"...second-place corporatist and dynastirian Jeb Bush."

Not only no objectification, but an elevated put down for the male.

Substantial, unneeded and undignified differences in your adjective use between men and women.

Fix this Cory. You may not realize you're doing it, but it's at least the second time I've asked you to stop the cutesy degradation of women, any woman.

We may very well have a female president and women's groups are already bracing for the extra layer of hell that's coming with it from scared and intimidated men and Phyllis Schlafly-type women.

Do not contribute to the hell.

Billary will bend over and take it in the backside from Israel, who is already running US foreign policy in the M.E.

On the brighter side, being married to Bill has taught her to keep her kewl in crisis mode. So her first reaction to a crisis would be to slap the snot out of Bill.

    Still won't vote for her.

  17. Tim 2015.02.26

    "Still won't vote for her."

So Mike, if HRC is the dem candidate, you voting for a republican?

  18. mike from iowa 2015.02.26

No way,Tim. I'll write in Warren or my nephew again. I will never vote for a wingnut above the township level. That is the last level where they can't do any harm to anyone.

  19. Bill Dithmer 2015.02.26

" Fix this Cory. You may not realize you're doing it, but it's at least the second time I've asked you to stop the cutesy degradation of women, any woman." Really?

Dont go changing the way you present your topics, that's why this blog is still successful. The minute you try to stifle your concience flow of words to more perfectly reflect the feelings of one group that are reading, the more you sell out your own creativity.

" Not only no objectification, but an elevated put down for the male."

Is that even possible? Taunia, I could understand your reasoning if this was a medical journal, but after all it's a political blog. I expect arguing, exaggerations of the truth, and a little humor, even at my own expense, to hold my interest. I dont want generic sterol white noise in print.

When people get to the point that they have to use an internal scale to make sure the indirect insults aimed at two people balance out, any attempt at real personal thought would be extremely limited.

If we were talking in person Cory would be able to use his voice inflection, or more accurately his intonation to make his points. I doubt this however because most people talk the way they write so we would still have color.

However when he writes, the interest level is retained through descriptive license because we cant hear those intonations we could if he were live.

Sarcasm is also easier to understand when heard then in writting. Corys subliminal sarcasm in print is just plain fun, if you can catch it its yous loss.

I dont come to Madville to get some vanilla coated predawn grey boring commentary. I spend time here because I like the vivid colors that creep through the conversations like a sunrise over the badlands. I thrive on unsubstantiated rumors and innuendo. Those things force me to search for the truth, not except the obvious.

And that's what makes the streets of Madville so interesting. Where else in SD can you find Steve Hickey, Our old friend Stace, Roger Cornelius, Rick Wieland, and the Grudz all at the same place at the same time?

Taunia, if you have to use a magnifying glass to judge the fairness of everyones attitude toward sexes, races, religion and class, the blog itself would fail.

    There, that'll do it.

Just so no one considers me sexist,I must apologize to Noem, whom I have stated is not that good looking. Compared to Jackley and Mickelson sitting on a horse, she would obviously be the better looking of the three to a straight male. And yet,she is still not that good looking.

  21. Roger Cornelius 2015.02.26

Taunia my friend, I would have to agree somewhat of Cory's description of Kristi.
When politicians, male and female, use their looks to gain political favor, it becomes fair game, Kristi has done this repeatedly.
A few years ago, Kristi and John Thune proudly boasted that they were considered the sexiest congresswoman and senator on capitol hill.

  22. mikeyc, that's me! 2015.02.26

Geez, Roger....I think I threw up in my mouth a little.

  23. Roger Cornelius 2015.02.26

    mikeye,

Sorry to hear that, are you better now?

  24. mike from iowa 2015.02.26

Besides being voted most likely to be vain, what have either Noem or Thune done while drawing way too much money from the gubmint?

  25. Tim 2015.02.26

"tim-did we miss u last night? penndems and SDP had guuuud meeting and follow-up. lotz happening!"

Sorry leslie, I threw my back out Monday working, not getting around very well, I will be at the SDDP town hall on the 26th of March for sure and plan to make the next SDP meeting as well. I have been told to stay off my feet this week.

  26. Deb Geelsdottir 2015.02.26

Here is something that will make any efforts to aid economic development irrelevant, - TPP. Elizabeth Warren can tell you exactly why it would make even SD's hyper-corrupt government less than an annoyance. This is very scary and should unite the far left and right, while it thrills the oligarchs.

Ms. Geelsdottir, I have clicked on blue lines like that before posted by Messrs. Sibby and Kurtz and been horrified with the porn and godding that has been thrust into my eyes.

Hence, I do not click such lines unless you give me an overview so I know what I am going to see. But for a young lady such as yourself, whom I find trustworthy, I shall click it...

  28. Deb Geelsdottir 2015.02.26

No porn or godding in my links Grudz. I don't click on all the links posted, and never sibby links. I am honored by your trust. Really.
