Madison Adopting Reflective Signs

I recommend glitter for the Welcome to Madison sign....

Among the items on the Madison City Commission agenda tonight is a resolution on reflective street signs. Apparently federal law and the Manual on Uniform Taffic Control Devices requires all regulatory, warning, guide, and street name signs to meet new retroreflectivity standards.

The second Whereas clause got my hopes up for some excitement:

2. Whereas the City Commission considers this an unfunded mandate that will cost the City of Madison in excess of $70,000 to comply with;...

Whoo-hoo! The City's not happy! They're going to protest! They're going to take Uncle Sam to court! Let's rumble!

Or so I thought. Resolution 2770 takes that one poke at unfunded mandates, then happily resolves to comply in full. We'll have shiny regulatory, warning, and guide signs by the 2015 deadline and bright street signs by the 2018 deadline.

Of coruse, maybe the city isn't making a stink because they can see the same funding source as I can: we could cover this entire project just by taking 10% out of Dwaine Chapel's pay each year. Besides, his Lake Area Improvement Corporation is all about signs: the LAIC should be happy to foot the bill for this municipal improvement.
