MHS Gym/Renovation Debate: Watch Online Now! Part 4

Last updated on 2011.03.30

Here's the fourth and final installment of last night's town hall debate on building a new gym and renovating Madison High School. See all 27 videos on Madville Times YouTube.

22. Anne Elisa Brown talks about how the renovation project would be good for the MHS theater program she directs as well as the band and chorus programs. She loses two style points for lamenting that the prom committee doesn't have enough storage space. (When people are losing jobs and Henry needs welders, prom committee goes the back of the line.)

23. Charlie Johnson laments our woefully obsolete and unfair tax structure:

24. Tom Farrell notes that the board can't reform South Dakota's tax structure. He acknowledges that asking the city for a sales tax bump may merit consideration:

25. Brett Hoffman says the February 1 vote, with a 50&ndash50 split and 28% turnout, didn't exactly constitute a mandate:

26. Ron Barthel asks the architect about expanding the gym; the architect responds that he'd have to look at specifics, notes that he was hoping he'd hear more alternative building ideas that he could analyze and cost out (at which point parliamentary decorum barely keeps me from leaping out of my seat to ask Jay to drop the debate format and convene a design charette!):

27. Linda McIntyre takes the architect up on his request and offers ideas on office space:

And that's the show! The board adjourned around 9 p.m.... and folks hung around for another 45 minutes to have the small-group conversations that we should have been having and capturing and sharing all through the meeting.

Update 2011.03.30: If YouTube breaks, or if you're just more of a listener than a watcher, Lauri Struve has posted the complete audio of the school board meeting online at KJAM!
