God, Guns, and Gordon… Because Real Policy-Making Is Too Hard

Independent U.S. Senate candidate Gordon Howie gleefully presents his new campaign bumper sticker:

GodGunsGordon2014

God, guns, and Gordon—ah, yes, a perfect triumvirate of things that are mostly useless when it comes to solving practical policy problems.

But that's o.k.: you don't want voters like that anyway, do you, Mike Rounds?

saw a big road Howie road sign on Hwy 81 by Yankton.

  2. Nick Nemec 2014.06.23

I saw at least 2 Howie signs on US 14 within 20 miles of Huron, always on the same property as a Kristi for Congress sign.

  3. Lynn 2014.06.23

I saw Gordon Howie for Gov signs where the Stace Nelson signs on hwy 37 between north of Huron and Hwy 212. No Guns or God on them. A few of the Rounds signs were all shot up.

  4. Rorschach 2014.06.23

God shot up the Rounds signs, Lynn. God is all about guns and Gordon. Jesus on the other hand wants nothing to do with Gordon and his guns. Is Gordon even allowed to use his guns for hunting purposes anymore?

  5. Cranky Old dude 2014.06.23

Yeah, but what is Gordon for?

I might vote for Larry just so I don't have to vote for Gordon-or RINO Mike.

  6. Roger Cornelius 2014.06.23

    GOD GORDON, GUNS?

  7. grudznick 2014.06.23

One out of three ain't bad, Mr. C. Want to guess which one?

  8. Jerry 2014.06.23

Hmm, I saw a sign from God that says "He will be voting for Rick Weiland". There was no mention of what precinct God would be voting in but you can bet it will be a Blue one.

Gant will demand to see God's ID. (Actually, I would, too.)

Shooting Rounds's signs? Not cool! Just one more example of how guns don't have a place in political discourse.

How would a campaigning God wear God on his sleave?

  11. mike from iowa 2014.06.24

If god wears his gun on his sleeve,I guess that means he is either a criminal or in favor of open carry. Curious as to how he could reach his gun if he also carries a thunderbolt. If the thunderbolt and gun are in the same hand/arm,wouldn't the gun fall out if he rared back to throw his thunderbolt? If the gun is on the opposite sleeve/arm,god would have to throw his thunderbolt and reach across his body for his gun. What does the good book have to say about this?

  12. Rorschach 2014.06.24

The Good Book says nothing about God shooting people. Smiting, not shooting.

    Pretty funny stuff.

"God" is not faring as well as the post-Greece, NY celebrators might have hoped. Howie probably loathes this. Now Greece, and other burgs, must welcome non-Christian invocations. The atheists are ready. Here is a site with sample atheist invocations:

Deb, this just crossed my twitter feed:

'Use lowercase he when referring to God in all references." AP Stylebook (@APStylebook)

  15. Deb Geelsdottir 2014.06.24

If AP says it is so, it is so.

  16. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.06.24

Really? No capital G? Even when quoting a Christian?

If Gordon keeps up with his bumper-sticker slogan, maybe we can counter by enforcing AP style on the blog with the deity and his chosen one: "god, guns, and gordon."

  17. JeniW 2014.06.25

    Oh, gee, gee, gee.

  18. Jessie 2014.06.25

No, Cory. Lowercase h, not g. Thus "he" and "God."

  19. Deb Geelsdottir 2014.06.25

    I like "She" and "God."

  20. JeniW 2014.06.25

    God has a gender???

Lower or upper case g for "god." If god is a name, then to me it is upper case. If used as a description, then "g" is lower case.

For example: Happy Mother's Day, Happy Father's Day are names(title.) My mother, or my father are descriptions. My mother is Anne. A nun with the appropriate qualification would be "Mother Anne."

  21. Tim 2014.06.25

God if you believe, god if you don't.

  22. mike from iowa 2014.06.25

R-does god really smite people with the jawbone of an ass? Would wingnut jawbones suffice in case he ever runs out of regular asses?

  23. Jessie 2014.06.25

just clarifying from my copy of the AP Stylebook. if they've changed it in a new edition, I wouldn't know. if you prefer MLA or Chicago or other styles, all bets are off.

  24. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.06.25

Oh! The pronoun! Got it. Interesting that capitalizing a pronoun is an expression of faith. I'll watch for that in public proclamations.

  25. bearcreekbat 2014.06.25

In Revelations 2-23, the New American Standard Bible says Jesus will kill Jezebel's children "with pestilence," while the Holman Christian Standard Bible, says he "will kill her children with the plague." Most other versions of the Bible ays he will kill the children "with death."

I don't think early writers anticipated that God would use guns in the OT because they were not yet invented. Since Revelations deals with future predictions but is also written before the invention of guns, it is understandable that guns were not mentioned.

In more modern times, a song titled "50 Caliber Christ" by Fish Karma indicates Jesus will use a 50 caliber machine gun to slaughter us non-believers. See

The music is a little bit too heavy metal or raock for me, but the lyrics are amazing. Fish Karma has another tune addressing the God of the OT called "God is a groovy guy," which also has amazing lyrics.

    'I like "She" and "God."'

For those who don't understand my use of cultural Neo-Marxism, Deb provided us with an example.

  28. Jerry 2014.06.25

Fish Karma had me going there bearcreekbat. 50 caliber is kind of overkill though as it does a number on you. But what the hey, it is God after all so God must have a way of cooling down the barrel on the beast. There is only so much urine you can use before everyone is dried out. I had to carry an extra barrel for the 60 to change it out when it got to hot, you had to know what you were doing.

  29. Deb Geelsdottir 2014.06.26

BCB said, "Since Revelations deals with future predictions. . . "

No, BCB, it doesn't. That's a common misconception, pressed forward by fundamentalist Christians.

Revelation is a letter of encouragement to the Jewish people after the great Temple had been destroyed. Everything that had been sacred to Judaism was gone, their faith devalued, their religion outlawed. They were entirely subject to the Roman Empire.

There was no freedom of speech for the Jews. They could not criticize their Roman overlords. It was the darkest time for the Israelis. So John of Patmos wrote Revelation, a subversive document, right under the Roman's nose, and they didn't get it. It was brilliant!

John appeared to be writing about the past - Babylon was old news. The time commonly known as The Babylon Captivity was long over and the Israelis had returned to a free Israel. It was their common history and they all knew it.

So when John wrote about the "whore of Babylon", he was talking about Rome! All those references to Israel's past oppressor and the oppressor's actions was all about Rome! All that about the seductive temptress referred to Roman cruelty.

There never were any predictions in the last book of the Christian New Testament. That was well understood for hundreds of years. The whole biblical predictions thing began in the 1800s along with homophobia and a few other issues. End Times predictions really hit the modern bandwagon with that whole fictional " Left Behind " series of books. Suddenly End Times became big business and a cash cow for the peddlers.

It's all built on falsehoods repeated so often that became accepted "truth."

  30. bearcreekbat 2014.06.26

Wow Deb, that is an interesting, and new to me, perspective of Revelations! I would like to learn more about your observations. Can you recommend any particular reading on it? All of my fundamentalist relatives seem to think Revelations was a prediction, as well as the religious radio stations I tune into from time to time.

I have one friend who argued that Revelations does not reflect anything Jesus said, but he was unable to explain why not, given the apparently direct quotes from Jesus set out by John in chapter 2. In your study and understanding, is my friend right - Revelations does not recite anything Jesus said to John, the author?
