Haber Plagiarizes Aaron Huey Speech at Oglala Lakota College Appearance

Fake Libertarian candidate for attorney general Chad Haber butted his way into the candidate forum at Oglala Lakota College last week and presumed to lecture our Lakota neighbors on their own history.

"I will always be called wasicu," says Haber... and never has that Lakota wordplay been applied more accurately. Haber takes all the fat, all right—he also steals much of his rambling recitation from New York Times photographer Aaron Huey's November 2010 TED talk.

Note that the video includes Haber's entire speech. He does not cite Huey. He does not indicate that he is reading someone else's words. He just steals it.

I have never left a box on a ballot empty in my voting life, this years AG race will be a first for me, wish dems had run a candidate.

  2. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.10.05

Tim, empty is better than endorsing a thief with your sacred vote.

We have three choices: vote for the corrupt Jackley, vote for the even more corrupt and amoral Haber, or vote for no one. Which of those actions produces the least moral stain? And which of those actions produces the best results?

  3. JeniW 2014.10.05

The video is not captioned, so after two minutes I gave up.

I was hoping that there would be a picture of the audience. I was wondering if he even had an audience. The opening shot showed empty seats, and I was going to type "Haber threw a party, but no one came?"

Did he have an audience, if so how many?

  4. Tim 2014.10.05

What does it say about the state of a state when you can't, with a clear conscience, vote for any AG candidate running because all of the choices are so corrupt?

  5. Lynn 2014.10.05

Video is not loading. The indicator is just spinning and that's about it. I am surprised he made the effort to make it to the forum. Figured he would just be at home playing video games with his kids or Gaddy in between posting memes on his facebook page and using the BaseConnect email list asking for money. Both Stranahans are back in Texas and doubtful if they are to return.

  6. Bill Fleming 2014.10.05

Unbelievable. And embarassing. Like he's sitting there learning all this for the first time, and expecting his audience to be in the same head space he is. He should be listening, not talking. He might actually learn something, instead of presuming he's got it down just because he just read something someone else wrote. There's nothing wrong with "always being a wasicu" just as there is nothing wrong with always Lakota, or black or female. But there is something wrong with always choosing to be an obnoxious, insensitive idiot. Haber doesn't need to influence anyone, he needs someone to "influence" him (BF says euphemistically :>)

  7. JeniW 2014.10.05

I did not vote for either one (I voted absentee.)

Haber, nor anyone else, indicated what he has to bring to the office other than the "exposing the corruption."

I do not like Jackley because of what seems to me like sweeping the EB-5 and Richard Benda's death under the carpet as if was just a minor, or non-existent issue. I thought that long before I started reading Cory's web-site. Benda's death was glossed over too quickly.

Jackley will win the election, but that does not mean that I needed to give him my vote of confidence.

  8. mike from iowa 2014.10.05

Haber is a walking, festering open-wound of corruption and Jackley is a do-nothing,festering wound of corruption. Great choices. Looks like a passably tough decision to make and I think I'd pass on this one.

One choice where the stench truly is unbearable.

  9. Lynn 2014.10.05

Did Chad just show up, make a statement and was not available for questions for example his past dealings? It sounds like from the moderator he was not scheduled to be part of the program.

  10. grudznick 2014.10.05

Voting for neither is like voting for both, equally, in a tie. And leaving it up to me to decide for you. It is OK, grudznick will decide many races for you.

  11. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.10.05

JeniW, sorry about the absence of captioning. At the end, I hear two, maybe three people clap. I see the announcer, a guy standing behind the bookshelf, and the lady who laid the mic on the table at the top.

Strange: the embedded video isn't loading for me either. I am able to watch it on the Facebook page itself: https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=278547782356295 Does that help, Lynn?

  12. JeniW 2014.10.05

You are correct about that Grudz, but how could I vote with a clear conscience for either one of them? That is what I preach about people who are registered to vote, but make the decision not to vote at all.

They both suck. Voting for either one would convey the message that I have confidence in either one.

How else do we indicate a lack of confidence in either one?

  13. Lynn 2014.10.05

I watched it on his facebook page Cory and that is why I asked the question above.

  14. Bill Fleming 2014.10.05

It's not the same at all, grudz. Voting for neither results in an undervote for both the winner and the loser in their particular race relative to the other candidates on the ballot, and sends a signal to them both that a significant %age of the voters in the state didn't support either one of them.

You, my fictional friend may not have the sophistication to read between the lines like this, but I assure you that the "winning" candidate will.

I for one would shudder at the thought that the only reason I won the elections is because the "grudznicks" of the State were goofy enough to vote for me.

  15. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.10.05

Indeed, Bill! Haber doesn't make clear what he's saying with his comment about always being called a wasicu. Is he saying he takes offense? Is he saying he has no credibility to speak on Indian issues?

And yes, why doesn't he listen? He says nothing new here. He says nothing that Indian people don't already know about their own history.

But hey, Chad isn't thinking that deeply. He is thinking entirely about himself. He is thinking, "I need to make a speech on the reservation and say things that make me sound like I sympathize with Indians." And of course, since he has no real knowledge or concern for Indians, he hits Google, steals text from Aaron Huey, and passionlessly mouths those words for eight minutes.

  16. Bill Fleming 2014.10.05

It has been my experience when working on various projects on the reservation that listening is the single most important thing a person who wants to be of service there can do. They've had it up to their eyeballs with people showing up, giving speeches, then leaving and never coming back to help do the work.

  17. Lynn 2014.10.05

I was going to vote for the lesser of two evils being Jackley but I'll pass on my vote for AG. Let this be lesson for the South Dakota Democratic Party in the future. A good run for AG could have been made this cycle.

  18. Roger Cornelius 2014.10.05

When Rick Weiland visits the reservations he visits with voters and listens to them, when he was at Pinky's store in Manderson he talked with an Indian Iraq war vet with PTSD for 45 minutes, others talked with him about issues and asked questions.
Cory, thanks for pointing out the plagiarism, I knew I heard the rambling before but could not connect it.
I did not learn one thing about candidate Haber from his ramblings, I already my history.
Was Haber invited, I don't know, but if he was it seems that someone would prepared some questions for him. Tom Casey, the moderator, is pretty bright guy after all.
Lee Stranahan apparently has given up on Haber and is now selling T-Shirts on Dakota reporter.

  19. Roger Cornelius 2014.10.05

If you haven't followed Cory's link to Aaron Huey's Ted Talk, it is a must.
Haber used it, not quoted it, almost verbatim.

  20. Lynn 2014.10.05

Tara is your candidate for South Dakota Attorney General Chad Haber going to be on the Argus Leader's 100 Eyes? It looked like they would love to have him on the show.

^^^Cory sorry this was supposed to under this thread

  21. grudznick 2014.10.05

Bill, as always you are correct about my lack of sophistication and culture. Alas, I will still vote and decide for you, for if you choose not to decide you still have made a choice.

  22. Lynn 2014.10.05

Roger has Tom Casey moderated the forums there this election cycle? He does a great job and asks great questions.

  23. Roger Cornelius 2014.10.05

    Lynn,
Yes, Casey also moderated the primary debate at OLC. I really do think that he knew Haber was going to be there he would have some questions for him.

  24. Roger Cornelius 2014.10.05

    grudz,
When I exercise my right to vote for none of the above, I will in fact cancel your vote for whatever corrupt candidate you choose to vote for.

  25. lesliengland 2014.10.05

Not many lawyers are interested in wasting their time getting skewered in a landslide red state AG race. Hardly the fault of Dem party. Joe Lowes lawyer would have been good, though, imo.

Looks like Haber is promising a return of the Black Hills.

  26. grudznick 2014.10.05

Rationalize it as you wish, Mr. C. Hope the coin flip in my mind comes up with the best candidate.

  27. Bill Fleming 2014.10.05

Correction, grudz: Deciding not to vote for either candidate is a decision, not a lack of one. It's like when you decide not to have either the gravy or the taters at breakfast because you're trying to avoid metabolic disorder and take care of your aging heart.

  28. grudznick 2014.10.05

That's right, Bill. If you choose not to decide, you have made a choice. Your choice is to let me make the decision for you.

In your breakfast metaphor, I would order both the taters and the gravy, and you should vote for both of the candidates and cancel yourself out. Or just become disgruntled and don't show up at the polls, like so many libbies are wont to do.

  29. grudznick 2014.10.05

There's a long haired hippy who once said:

You can choose a ready guide in some celestial voice
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice
You can choose from phantom fears and kindness that can kill
    I will choose a path that's clear
    I will choose freewill

  30. Bill Fleming 2014.10.05

How about this, grudz: My decision not to talk to you about this anymore is still a decision. You won't get any more out of me on this topic. No vote for AG, no gravy, no taters. Nothin'. That's my decision. :-)

  31. Dave Baumeister 2014.10.05

Holy rambling, Batman (or should that be Holy Pandering)! Haber reads from a history lesson, but never once makes mention that he is running for South Dakota attorney general. I know he never learned anything I taught him in high school, but by "osmosis" from being around speech students that had much more talent than he did, he should have picked up to end a speech with the most important information. He just says, "We should get off your land," and then stops. And taken at face value, "we" means "himself and at least one other person." Does this mean he is leaving the country? Because that is the only way he is ever going to get off the land that belongs to the Native Americans. Or, by "we" does he mean, "everybody but me"? Not having heard much out of him lately, I was thinking he was just happy to be on the ballot for whatever "immunity" he thinks that affords him, and, other than his Facebook page, would just be somewhat quiet. But, instead, he goes to a Reservation and talks down to the Native people. Even if he were elected Attorney General, and then Governor in another four years, he would NEVER have the authority, power or ability to give back any land to anyone. And only someone extremely egotistical (or really stupid) would think that he could convince people otherwise. Chad certainly is an embarrassment to anyone who was ever on our debate team (as most will tell you), and should be an embarrassment to anyone whoever graduated from O'Gorman.

  32. grudznick 2014.10.05

OK Bill, I've seen that look before when people tell you things that ruin your breakfast. If only there were a third candidate...I'm just sayin...

  33. lesliengland 2014.10.05

all you repubs will vote jackley in, haber will take the indian vote-ha!

grudz-i know exactly what you mean at those meals. ouch

  34. JeniW 2014.10.05

Grudz, it is a given that Jackley would be a shoo-in, that is why he is able to take the voters in SD for granted, and is doing very little, if anything to be re-elected.

Whether you vote for Jackley or Haber, it will not matter, because Jackley is the shoo-in. All Jackley needs is one vote more than Haber.

I do not like being taken for granted, and I do not like Jackley or Haber.

If there had been a third candidate, I may have, or maybe not have voted for him/her.

My question to you earlier, and have not seen an answer yet, how do I convey the message to Jackley and to Haber, that I do not have confidence in either one of them ? How do we protest if not by voting for either one, especially since we know that Jackley is a shoo-in?

    What can us protesters do?

  35. tara volesky 2014.10.05

The Natives are smarter than you think. They will get behind Chad Haber. They don't care that he isn't a polished politician or reads Indian history on treaty rights. He showed up, he actually listens and he cares. His wife went from working at Sanford making big money to work in shelters and take care of the poor. She bucked the establishment and didn't play by their rules. She would rather sit in a prison cell than make a deal and bow down to MJ. I'll side with the underdog over the establishment.

  36. Lynn 2014.10.05

Tara after the election are you, Chad, Lora, Clayton Walker, Mike, Ryan, Annette going to all be in the Libertarian Party and make a full effort there or start a new political party here in South Dakota?

  37. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.10.05

Leslie, the AG is in no position to return the Black Hills, is he?

  38. tara volesky 2014.10.05

Lynn, I am registered Independent but I hope they can get the Libertarian party going again because I think it is good to have more than 2 parties. No, Cory the AG can't return the Black Hills to the Indians, but he can give them a voice and support them.

  39. JeniW 2014.10.05

Oh, please, please say that they did not use children as guinea pigs to test a drug!

I do not think drugs like that work the same as vaccines for whooping cough, polio, and other diseases. Nor is that drug designed for children.

Potential malpractice lawsuit on the horizon? I sure hope so!!

  40. Bill Fleming 2014.10.05

Seems to me, if the tribes were to sue the State of South Dakota for the return of State held lands within the boundaries of the Treaty of Laramie (Custer State Park, for example) it would be the SD Attorney General's job to defend the State of SD's interests, wouldn't it?

  41. Roger Cornelius 2014.10.05

This Indian, a real one originally from the Pine Ridge Reservation, spends his free time telling Lakota voters about Chad Haber, Larry Pressler and other candidates that say they will listen to Indians and help them. I tell them to vote for Democrats, and not to vote for any independent candidates.
The Lakota are smart people, from past experience they can recognize con men like Haber in a drum beat. They'll show him some courtesy and than laugh their asses off at how ridiculous he is.

  42. tara volesky 2014.10.05

It is not against the law for a Dr. to give vivitrol to children under 18 as long as the Dr. uses extreme caution. Bosworth is a highly respected Dr. and I am sure she knows what she is doing. She has treated hundreds of children. I don't think you need to dramatize over what the Dr. prescribes to her patients.

  43. Roger Cornelius 2014.10.05

    JeniW.
Read Bill's comment at 10:05 am, the protest vote won't show up until after the votes are counted.
If there is a sharp difference between the total voter turn out and the number of votes cast Haber and Jackley, it will reflect the non-voter protest.

  44. Roger Cornelius 2014.10.05

And don't forget Haber's claim that he and Annette sold two homes to pay for those vivitrol injections she gave to poor Indians.

  45. tara volesky 2014.10.05

What a sacrifice. They realized being rich doesn't buy happiness. If you want to know what God thinks of money, look at the people he gives it to.

  46. Lynn 2014.10.05

Tara I think Chad, Annette, Lora, Mike, Ryan, Clayton Walker, The Stranahans should start a new political party here in South Dakota. They obviously really think outside the box and bring a new approach to combat the corruption here in South Dakota and bring new ideas. What should this new innovative Party be called?

  47. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.10.05

Tara, you sure about that? Vivitrol has not been studied in children. The FDA has not approved it for use on children. I'm not trying to dramatize; I'm just asking: are there no consequences for a doctor who prescribes drugs without FDA approval?

On a related note, are there no consequences for a candidate who takes the mic and recites someone else's speech without giving that author any credit?

  48. tara volesky 2014.10.05

Cory, I checked out the Vivitrol websites. There can be many side effects but nowhere did I find it was illegal to give to children. I suppose a Dr. can prescribe by weight and age. Haber would probably get a D or F in your speech class. lol He was reading treaty rights and history. It wasn't a speech Cory, just a lot of documentation. He could use some speech lessons. He might have quoted somebody but I didn't see anything out of line.

  49. Roger Cornelius 2014.10.05

He didn't quote anybody, if it was a quote he would have attributed it to the author.
Read Cory's link to Aaron Huey's 2010 Ted Talk, Haber used his words verbatim. No doubt about it.

  50. JeniW 2014.10.05

The Vivitrol web-site sates that the drug has not been tested for children under the age of 18.

    http://www.vivitrol.com/About/AlcoholDependence

It might not be illegal, but it seems strange to me.

A one time shot is not going to provide a "cure" for an addiction to alcohol. Does that mean that Chad and Annette donated enough money to give each of those 94 kids an injection every month and follow-up treatment to include counseling?

  51. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.10.05

Roger's right, Tara, it was a speech. He stole the speech from Aaron Huey. And read what JeniW provides on Vivitrol and kids. Not good doctoring, just Annette and Chad thinking they can disregard rules and do whatever they want. Narcissism over Native health, eh?

  52. grudznick 2014.10.05

Ms. Jeni, I apologize for not seeing your question to me. I guess you could try protesting with signs in front of popular eateries in your town, or waving those "Honk if you hate Jackley" signs on the boulevard, or maybe even writing some strongly worded letters of disapproval to the editors. All of those would share your disapproval and protestations with far more people than shoving an empty piece of paper in a box and saying "there, take THAT Jackely and Haber!"

  53. JeniW 2014.10.05

Grudz, yes, those are certainly are options. Not sure that they would be any more effective than not selecting either one.

The question I struggled with is how could I in good conscience vote for either one of them when they both equally suck? It is like voting for which drug is better, Meth or Crack, both are equally bad.

I already know that Jackley is going to be re-elected, I just don't want him to think that he has everyone's, in particular, my approval or support.

  54. grudznick 2014.10.05

I understand, Ms. Jeni. You have a conundrum, indeed. I, myself, believe Mr. Jackley will be re-elected and I could vote for Mr. Haber because he would be far more entertaining an office holder, but I do not believe he possesses the qualifications or aptitude for that office. That is my conundrum.

  55. tara volesky 2014.10.05

Grudz. He would hire very competent and ethical attorneys that would get to the bottom of this mess. This could be quite entertaining. Hopefully he would have a new governor to work with also. Cory would keep him on track.

  56. larry kurtz 2014.10.05

Anyone believing the crack Gant team would let Haber win is delusional: none of you have anything to lose by voting for Chad.

  57. mike from iowa 2014.10.05

Good one Tara, replace a known sleazeball commodity with an even more notoriously known sleazeball. JeniW-ol' gravy taters plays with people's heads. That seems to be his main function on here. Like conversing with a Sibson on prunes. From what you have read or heard about Jackley/Haber,is there a single reason to vote for either one?

  58. larry kurtz 2014.10.05

Imagine a scenario where South Dakota's former and current governors and attorney general are elected to office, Mike and Marty indicted by a federal grand jury for obstruction of justice, fraud, etc. then resign: whom would DD appoint attorney general since Kevin Schieffer would be appointed to the US Senate?

  59. Lynn 2014.10.05

Larry I would love to see Mike Rounds hang out with Denny Hecker the former Twin Cities car dealer at the Federal Work Camp up in Duluth. What a sight that would be.

  60. Lynn 2014.10.05

    Federal Corrections Work Camp

  61. mike from iowa 2014.10.05

I just went through the vivitrol website and I gotta tell you,it is complicated shit to inject. If you have a doctor that can't comprehend simple instructions on a ballot petition form, she has no business administering this stuff to people's gluteous region once a month.

  62. CD 2014.10.05

Bosworth's use of Vivitrol is a very complex discussion, although I only witnessed her use it with adults, and it was mostly successful but only when combined with talk therapy.
This pair is only interested in throwing out their huge net of corruption and hoping to catch one unsuspecting fish. Chad Haber has absolutely NO business being responsible for any other human in any way. He has string negative opinions of those with mental health issues and even worse thoughts about those with addiction.

Speaking as a person with experience working with people struggling with mental health issues, Tara, seek help. You're delusional.

  63. tara volesky 2014.10.05

Mike, go tell that to her patients.

  64. larry kurtz 2014.10.05

  65. tara volesky 2014.10.05

CD, maybe I'll go make an appointment with Dr. Bosworth. Thanks Larry. At least your not a coward.

  66. mike from iowa 2014.10.05

What earthly purpose would that serve,Tara? BTW,have you looked up lately?

  67. larry kurtz 2014.10.05

mike: that goes for you, too.

  68. Lynn 2014.10.05

Would that include me also Larry?

  69. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.10.05

CD, I welcome professional perspectives on complicated topics. Can a doctor prescribe for a minor a medicine that the FDA has not been approved for children? If so, under what conditions? If not, what penalty would accrue?

  70. mike from iowa 2014.10.05

    What goes for me?

  71. tara volesky 2014.10.05

Well Mike, CD has a mental health background and has worked with people who have mental issues. Maybe she could test me for mental illness. If she works in mental health, she probably shouldn't be making a diagnosis of me over the internet. Not very professional.

  72. larry kurtz 2014.10.05

Pseudonymous commenters deploying ad hominem attacks on people using their real names is offensive blog etiquette.

  73. mike from iowa 2014.10.05

Who are you supposed to be? The blog police? My real name is mike. I really am from iowa. I posted a few times under my real name and I posted my last name in a comment section on this blog in the past two weeks. What-you didn't bother to read it? Not my problem.

  74. larry kurtz 2014.10.05

Does Tara know who you are, Mike?

  75. tara volesky 2014.10.05

  80. Roger Cornelius 2014.10.05

My sister suggested that we should contact Mr. Aaron Huey and inform him that a candidate for South Dakota Attorney General plagiarized his speech.
Anybody know how to do that?

  81. Deb Geelsdottir 2014.10.05

    What the hell was that?!

Chaber drones on, reading pages of someone else's words, then just stops. It's worse than insulting to the locals. Geez. Is he next going to CEB to tell them their history? Or how about going to my hometown and telling the Miller folks all about their town. Scott Heidepriem, Miller native, wrote Miller's history, "Bring On the Pioneers!" for the Miller centennial. Chaber could just read a few pages of that. Without attribution, of course.

I loved that crack, Voting for Jackley or Haber is like choosing which is better, meth or crack. Who said that? Funny.

  82. Roger Cornelius 2014.10.05

Yeah Deb, I liked that meth or crack comment too.

It's like if you run out of toilet paper, are you choosy about the brand you borrow from your neighbor?

  83. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.10.05

Yeah, but on the AG ballot, my neighbor is offering me sandpaper and poison ivy.

  84. JeniW 2014.10.05

Deb, the Meth/Crack comment came from me:

"The question I struggled with is how could I in good conscience vote for either one of them when they both equally suck? It is like voting for which drug is better, Meth or Crack, both are equally bad."

  85. Deb Geelsdottir 2014.10.05

Hahahahahahahaha! Thanks for a good laugh, Roger and Cory.

    Ah, JeniW, my hero.

  86. tara volesky 2014.10.05

Aaron Huey would probably love that his words were spoken on Pine Ridge. Get a hold of him, I think he would endorse Haber who cares about Indian issues over Jackley. Don't be hypocrites, you are doing to Haber the same thing SDWC and the media is doing to Susan. Be consistent.

  87. Roger Cornelius 2014.10.05

    True Tara,
Aaron Huey would probably like the idea of someone quoting his work, that is usually the highest honor an author can have.
But, I order for it to be an honor to the author, the quotations must be attributed to him, not claimed as their own as Haber obviously did.

  88. tara volesky 2014.10.05

Haber wouldn't know any different than Susan did with her her website. Who did Aaron copy off for all the dates and treaties? This is getting pretty ridiculous. Blame Iron Eyes. He approved it. You guys are so petty and childish. Grow up.

  89. tara volesky 2014.10.05

You are such a little snitch Roger, going on Huey's fb page acting like a little tattle tail. Talk about grade schooler. I would love to call him and explain the situation. I have never heard of the guy till now. He sure take nice pictures. You need a reality check Roger the Drama Queen.

  90. Deb Geelsdottir 2014.10.05

Tara, plagiarism is plagiarism. There is no excuse.

  91. Roger Cornelius 2014.10.06

I just knew Tara would eventually bring up Susan Wismer and her plagiarism mess, the simple answer is to find Cory's thread on the subject.
No one there was apologizing, explaining, or justifying her laziness and plagiarism. In fact, we were quite hard on her.
Again with the Tara blame, "blame Iron Eyes he wrote it'.
What is ridiculous is that Tara consistently has to blame someone other than the responsible party.
And for a flamboyant finish from Tara, "You guys are so childish and petty. Grow up". Wow, what profound words, a really catchy phrase. Gee, I wish I thought of that, maybe someone will quote Tara without attributing the quote to her one of these days.
Plagiarism is serious, most recently a Democrat running for the senate had to withdraw from the race for plagiarism.

  92. Roger Cornelius 2014.10.06

That was fun Tara, I tweeted him to, as did others. Grow up Tara, all's fair in politics, you're a campaign manager, you should know that.

I believe that you have never have heard of him until now, but plagiarist Chad Haber obviously did.

By the way Tara, did you actually listen to Aaron Huey's speech and than compare it to Chad Haber's rambling?

  93. Roger Cornelius 2014.10.06

    Tara,
"snitch" is a prison term, is that where you learned it?

  94. tara volesky 2014.10.06

You guys can trash Susan and Chad, but I believe they acted without malice and contempt.

  95. Roger Cornelius 2014.10.06

Keep explaining Tara, regardless of intent, they plagiarized.

What is the hell so hard for you to understand about that?

  96. Deb Geelsdottir 2014.10.06

Roger, I think you are being too straight forward and direct. Seriously, I think the point is crystal clear. Plagiarism.

I've found the entire Chanette thing, top to bottom, oddly disconnected from simple facts and direct answers. I'm thinking not only about Tara's misdirected comments, but also the way Chanette, both individuals, wander off in odd directions.

Remember Bos' bizarre video with the shoes? And the graffiti? Chad's strange interloper campaign stop today?

In a half century of my observations and participation in politics in SD, the Chanette saga is the strangest, most bizarre thing I've ever witnessed.

  97. tara volesky 2014.10.06

Shame on you Roger, you just plagiarized my words......oh I guess you quoted me. If I sing a song, do I need to quote the artist? I am sure Aaron is not going to sue Chad, just like Wendy Davis is not going to sue Susan.

  98. tara volesky 2014.10.06

Common people don't know all the rules. That's another reason people don't get involved in politics. It can make a person paranoid and anxious.

  99. Roger Cornelius 2014.10.06

Aaron Huey just responded to my tweet from earlier today, he didn't say anything about suing Haber, but he is aware of the plagiarism.
Deb, you're right, this one of the most chaotic seasons in South Dakota I've seen for sometime. I would like to say it is full of interesting characters, but it isn't.
We have almost been distracted enough by all these circus acts to detract from our goal of beating all Republicans, independents, and Libertarian-for-a-day candidates.
Sadly Deb, it has been entertaining and funny at times, but hardly educational in any sense.

  100. tara volesky 2014.10.06

I guess I need to go to jail because I am sure I plagiarized without even knowing about it. Presidents plagiarize their speech writers all the time.

  101. Roger Cornelius 2014.10.06

Political rules, if there are any, are quite simple. They include reason, logic, and honesty. When a candidate makes a mistake, they need to own it, not have a mouthpiece trying to explain it away.
Campaign mistakes can be forgivable, but when a candidate or their representative blames everybody including the wall, people remember that.
People remember apologizes and a candidate that owns their mistakes, it gives them integrity.

  102. Roger Cornelius 2014.10.06

President's plagiarizing their speech writers is just a dumb comment. Grow up Tara

  103. tara volesky 2014.10.06

Roger, do you really think Presidents write their own speeches and quotes? "Ask, not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country" ???? don't know the author of that. I think it was one of Kennedy's speech writers.

  104. Roger Cornelius 2014.10.06

    Tara,
Presidential speech writers are paid for their work and their words become the property of the president, plagiarism isn't even a consideration. The writers words have been bought and paid for.
Incidentally, President Obama does write the bulk of his own speeches.
I can't recall off hand who wrote the Kennedy quote, I'm thinking Theodore White, but I maybe wrong.
If I were to pay you to write a book for me, the book and its contents would become my property.

  105. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.10.06

Roger is right, Tara. There is no comparison between a President or any other figure having a paid staff to write statements and a crook downloading a speech from another public figure and reading it as if it were his own.

  106. larry kurtz 2014.10.06

    aaronhuey ‏@aaronhuey 8h8 hours ago
@larry_kurtz much of my TED talk taken line by line.

  107. Bill Fleming 2014.10.06

Tara, can you explain to us here why Mr. Haber would go into that gathering uninvited, ask for permission to speak, and then read another person's words, line for line for such a long time without telling the audience what he was doing?

What is it he was trying to communicate by doing that to the Lakota people there that day?

Could he perhaps have been more effective by simply taking the microphone, thanking the people there for a few minutes of their attention, and telling them he was there to listen and answer any questions anyone may have of him regarding his campaign for office?

In other words, did you have anything to do with advising Haber what to do that day? How to comport himself in general? Or do you just come along behind him and try to clean up his messes?

  108. Lynn 2014.10.06

Tara you know a great name for this new political party could be borrowed a little from Teddy Roosevelt once running under the Bull Moose Party.

South Dakota could have their own new Bull Moose Party that is a little rough around the edges being an understatement for Bull in a China shop candidates, without being polished, not being politicians, shoot from the hip, plagiarize , scheme with their own style fighting the machine. You all could have fun with it and run with it.

  109. Bill Fleming 2014.10.06

The Bull Manure Party. 'Because dammit, we give a sh#t." Good one Lynn. I like it!

  110. Lynn 2014.10.06

Bull headed not gonna change for no one! Might as well embrace it and have fun with it!

  111. Doctor 2014.10.06

I am going to address the Vivitrol questions.
Yes a doctor can prescribe medicine without FDA approval with informed consent and distributor permission. The questions here are:
    1. It seems to me that Bosworth was under an agreement with the Medical board at the time, this could be a violation of her board practice agreement and subsequent agreement.

    2. who provided informed consent. Minors are unable to - and if she is speaking about the children she saw at VOA (I doubt was 94), VOA would not have given permission even with parentis ad locum- which again begs the question "who gave consent"?

    3. The Vivitrol distributor Alkermes would have had to given consent or at least waived liability. Where is that document?

    Just some thoughts..

  112. tara volesky 2014.10.06

Show me your medical license Dr. Why don't you go down the list and critique every Dr. in SD. Like I said the Republican establishment loves this blog because they eat their own. How are the Democrats doing? You need to try another strategy. This isn't working by tearing down Independents and 3rd party candidates. That's why the Democrat Party is dwindling away and talented people are leaving SD. Divisiveness does not work. This is just another thread to distract from the EB-5 scandal. To bad you don't interview Haber with all the documentation he has on MJ. Take off your blinders people, don't you know the Republicans love you.

  113. JeniW 2014.10.06

Injecting a bit of "drama" this morning?

  114. Bill Fleming 2014.10.06

I think some Republicans like this blog because there is more in-depth, rational reporting and discussion going on here, and less off-the-wall, mindless snark and hysteria than there is on the primary GOP alternative. Please don't ruin that for us, Tara.

  115. tara volesky 2014.10.06

You guys are focusing on the wrong person. It should be Marty Jackley, DD and MMR. The Native Sun News is spot on. They actually did their homework. Dartmouth taught you well Mr. Ecoffey. Brilliant reporting. They don't do sleaze, just hard news. Maybe mainstream should take some lessons.

  116. Jim 2014.10.06

Tara, the Doctor was addressing the Vivitrol issue which Haber introduced into his campaign. I fear you will end up like the rest of people who align with Bosworth-Haber: getting burned in the end. Disdain for the couple has been well earned.

  117. tara volesky 2014.10.06

What's the Doctor's name? Bosworth/Haber do not scare me. Just so they don't burn those children in the homeless shelter.

  118. Jim 2014.10.06

The doctor whose husband claims she gave the drugs to minors is Annette Bosworth.

I'm not aware of other allegations regarding doctors on this site.

  119. tara volesky 2014.10.06

I was going from the name Doctor. Bosworth is a MD. Are you guys saying you know more than the Dr., or am I just being delusional?

  120. Roger Cornelius 2014.10.06

    You're just delusional

  121. Bill Fleming 2014.10.06

CD above says he's a doctor.

  122. lesliengland 2014.10.06

cory-didn't see your question. Return is complex from every angle and I have never thought of the state's perspective. it may come up soon enough because the state had a significant role with rapid city, the churches and the guard in distributing among themselves 1200 acres of prime west rapid real estate, plus water rights, rather than allowing it to revert to the feds. This was after 1896-1933 boarding school era and up through WWll.

I don't know how the state acquired it's Black Hills property. A quick title search of a parcel at the register of deeds would give an idea. am expecting monkey business!

Who was mayor back then, off hand?

  123. james 2014.10.06

As an MD with a license in South Dakota. The answer to your question Tara after reading this thread: Delusional.

Supporting anything to do with Ann and Chad should be an example of "delusional" in wikipedia.

A delusion is a belief held with strong conviction despite superior evidence to the contrary.

Your problems seems to be with "superior evidence"....I'm not sure what that would take at this point.

  124. Bill Dithmer 2014.10.06

Roger, Theodore sounds right but somehow White doesnt. Wasnt there a stink about JFK plarsierizing the ask not quote from an old school teacher?

    The Blindman

  125. Bill Dithmer 2014.10.06

    Thats it.

    The Blindman

  126. Roger Cornelius 2014.10.06

Thanks JeniW. and Bill, I was sort partially right, that brought about a bunch more reading this afternoon.

Anybody if Haber has issued an apology and explanation to Aaron Huey for stealing his words?

  127. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.10.07

Aaron Huey noticed on Twitter: "@ChadHaber your plagiarism of my TED talk made me laugh. But its not funny for your campaign. Check your self."

  128. Sharon Schulz-Elsing 2014.10.29

This spot on the ballot has been killing me - I can't see any way to go but blank ovals here.

  129. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.10.31

Hi, Sharon! Sorry I didn't see your comment sooner. The only normative call I make on all voters is to leave Haber's oval blank. I make no judgment on those who mark no one for AG or those who mark Jackley.

  130. tara volesky 2014.10.31

Does that mean we can't vote for Wismer because of her web page. Really? Like I said earlier the Republicans love you.

  131. JeniW 2014.10.31

I did not vote for Jackley, because I do not like his behavior as an AG.

I did not vote for Haber because of his behavior and I do not think he has the skills needed to fulfill the responsibilities of the office.

  132. tara volesky 2014.10.31

People that voted for Haber will make sure he behaves and will hold him to his word. Helping the children and keeping them safe. And clean up corruption.
