Stricherz Among Campaign Finance Slowpokes

Uh oh: I get an e-mail from Pat Powers, chief operating officer of the Secretary of State's office, announcing fines for candidates and committees who failed to meet yesterday's campaign finance filing deadline. I quickly scan for "Lake County Democrats"... whew! Not there! My envelope must have made it through the snow to Pierre.

Alas, several envelopes did not:

Holy cow, folks! Get those papers in! That's fifty bucks a day!

Among the delinquents is District 8's own Republican Representative Patricia Stricherz. Patty, quick! Download a form or just run down to Jason's office and fill that puppy out today!

Update 17:35 CST: Just in time for the Big News at Six, Mr. Powers sends out another presser from Boss Gant, announcing that Casey Murschel was mistakenly included on the list of non-filers. We all should have known Casey would have her poop in a group: she had her final finance report in on December 9. Good thing we've got Pat on the job in Pierre to use his computer wizardry to keep track of such things.

Boss Gant, however, apparently frowns on being so organized:

Secretary Gant said "we regret the error, and acknowledge that the candidate had filed prior to the deadline. However, going forward, candidates filing year end reports will not be allowed to file those reports until January 1st at the earliest to ensure that all expenses and income for a campaign are accurately reported, since many bank accounts will accrue and earn interest over the course of a month's time" [press release, Secretary of State's office, 2011.02.02]

Pat's presser also notes the following folks got their rears in gear and dashed in with docs today:

  • Pitts for House
  • Nate Welch for State Senate
  • Chris Karr for House
  • South Dakota Medical Group Management Association PAC
  • SDSU College Democrats
  • Black Hills Home Builders PAC
  • SD Nurses Association PAC
