Do you dig democracy? Do you care about community? Do you dread the destruction the GOP will wreak if they win in 2012?
Then you should sign up for the Summer Organizer Program run by Organizing for America, the community organizing arm of the Democratic National Committee. In the Summer Organizer Program, you'll get on-the-street training in skills of democracy and policy advocacy. You'll engage lots of fellow citizens, providing information and listening to and learning from their stories. You'll develop practical skills in organizing voter registration drives, rallies, and community service events. You'll spend your summer (June 4 through August 6) making a difference for the community you work in and causes you believe in.
The Summer Organizing Program is unpaid work, but it's good work. There's no age requirement; the OFA FAQs page says they've had summer organizers from age 16 to 78. College students, you can swing academic credit for their summer organizing, but work that out ahead of time with your school.
