Madison School Board Candidate Videos Part 2: Where to Trim the Budget?

Last updated on 2011.04.09

Here's Part 2 of from-the-table coverage of Tuesday's Madison Central school board candidates' forum. The question from the Chamber of Commerce Governmental Affairs committee and emcee John Knuths: With the cuts the state has made to K-12 funding, where can the district trim its budget without depriving kids of a quality education?

Jennie Thompson says ask the teachers and administrators where to cut:

Corey Gunderson says not replacing the five retiring teachers and not renewing certain programs is a good idea:

Cory Allen Heidelberger says asking everybody—staff, community, kids—for priorities is good management. But I also note that cuts through attrition denigrate the great work of long-time teachers like Doc Miller and suggests that instead of cutting opportunities, we should ask the public if they'd be willing to pay an opt-out to keep all the opportunities our kids have.

Shawn Miller says there must be some fat in the budget:

Nathan Nash admits he doesn't know, but says his experience with church budgeting will help him make good decisions.

More to come—stay tuned! And see all of the videos on Madville Times YouTube!
