Elks Theatre Hosts Black Hills “Protect Our Water” Earth Day Event

Last updated on 2011.04.17

The Elks Theatre in Rapid City is hosting a free (yes, free!) Earth Day event on Wednesday, April 20. The South Dakota Izaak Walton League and the South Dakota Clean Water Alliance will put on the Black Hill Protect Our Water program from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday. The show includes two films on clean water and uranium. There will also be three live speakers:

  • Dr. Andy Johnson: "Beyond Petroleum"
  • Dr. Lilias Jarding: "Uranium Mining in the Black Hills"
  • Charmaine White Face: "Defenders of the Black Hills"

To raise money to fight Powertech's dangerous uranium-mining plan and other threats to clean Black Hills water, CWA will auction off a massage, acupuncture, and other cool loot. Bring your ears and your wallet, and help protect the precious water resources of the Black Hills.

So what about Madison's own water problems? Any comment on http://madisonet.com/site/index.cfm?newsid=20459868&BRD=1302&PAG=461&dept_id=181987&rfi=8

I quote: "According to Kim Verhey, foreman of the city's water distribution system, "Although there is a higher level of this chemical in our water, it does not necessarily mean that the water is unsafe to consume." Verhey said that the trihalomethane (TTHM) level that Madison water exceeded is measured in parts per billion. He added that the excessive TTHM levels are considered unhealthy for a person if a 150-pound individual were to drink about 2 quarts of the affected water each day during a typical lifetime."
Except 2 quarts, of course, is what every one of us is supposed to drink every day. And what about babies? Children? How about jumping on this issue a little?
