Huron Mayor Recall Brings Left-Right Harmony

The petition drive to recall Huron mayor Dave McGirr is seeing its own expression of the occasional left-right synergy between Dennis Kucinich and Ron Paul. Huronians are seeking to oust Mayor McGirr as punishment for suspending former police chief Doug Schmitt. The Huron City Commission suspended Schmitt in March after he testified to the State Legislature that he is aware of immigration violations at two local meat-packing plants. Schmitt resigned and retired March 31, and Mayor McGirr insists neither the suspension nor the resignation were discipline dished out by the city, but most observers can smell legalese in that statement.

When Schmitt was suspended, I had to agree with arch-conservative blogger Ed Randazzo that investigating the chief for telling the truth was out of line. Glenn-Beck wannabe Shad Olson has also made Schmitt and illegal immigration in Huron one of his major talk show topics.

But look who's leading the petition drive against Mayor McGirr:

"He is basically the head political office holder in our city and we feel he is the one most responsible for this action that was taken by the city," Ron Volesky said.

Volesky is acting as spokesperson and legal council for the petition drive. He says it started Tuesday and finished the day with 200 signatures. Organizers have two months to gather the signatures needed [Erich Schaffhauser, "Petition Circulates to Remove Huron Mayor," KELOLand.com, 2011.04.27].

That's Ron Volesky, one of my favorite Democrats, three-time candidate for attorney general, leading the charge on a cause that makes Tea Partiers statewide jump for joy.

Democrats and Republicans working together; that alone makes the Huron recall drive worth watching.
