Maybe Romney likes Harry Chapin....
Rick Perry ended his campaign a few months ago with his famous "Oops." Might Mitt Romney have done the same thing last night with one word?
"Maybe. Heh heh, heh heh."
When you're running for President in a Republican primary, and someone asks if you'll follow your father's reasonable example, "Maybe" doesn't sound like the response of a good son... or a good leader.
This answer cost him votes. Most people don't think he has anything illegal in his taxes but they wonder what finagling he has done to ensure he pays the lowest rate he can. (nothing wrong with that).
All he had to say was: I will release my taxes in April like everyone has done before me when my taxes for this year are complete. My father started this trend and I asure you I will ensure this trend continues.
But he chose to give a silly wishy washy answer and giving a weak answer didn't help him.
Looks like getting booed and getting beat can make up a guy's mind pretty quickly:
"Mitt Romney will release tax returns on Tuesday, after coming under pressure from his rivals for the GOP presidential nomination to do so."
"Mr. Romney said he will release his 2010 return and an estimate of his 2011 tax position" [Aaron Zitner, "Romney to Release 2010 Tax Return, 2011 Estimate," WSJ: Washington Wire, 2012.01.22].
