Spearfish Photo Break: Crow Peak, Higgins Gulch

Sometimes a blogger needs to get away from it all. Here's how I did that this afternoon, just a couple miles west of Spearfish:

view southwest across Higgins Gulch toward Crow Peak, Black Hills, South Dakota
view southwest across Higgins Gulch toward Crow Peak
view northwest across Higgins Gulch, Black Hills, South Dakota
view northwest across Higgins Gulch
view north from Johnson Fire Road, toward Higgins Gulch Road, northern Black Hills, South Dakota
view north from Johnson Fire Road, toward Higgins Gulch Road

I'm never lost... just sometimes hard to find.

I do want to see more of the area around Spearfish and the hills. Really loved being there and seeing what we did this fall. I used to think Washington state was the most beautiful but seeing western SD was fantastic. Should take advantage of it.

That's state land up there: a cornfield for deer if i recall, camping is restricted to just a few nights if at all. It's just above where Chester Poage was murdered....

Thanks, Nadene and Mom! Glad to share.

Larry, yes, GF&P still has food production plots up there for wildlife. The signs I saw said no camping... darn it! Of course, folks who believe in ghosts might not want to camp out there, given that last connection. I hadn't thought about Poage's murder happening here until you mentioned it.

Hey, Nadene Deiterman is an Elkton girl: we went to St. Mary's together!

Omg, are you a Democrat, Nadene?

Lovely photos Cory. Thanks. The Northern Hills were always my favorite part, though I love the vast prairies in NW SD too.

I lived in Washington state for a year doing an internship. The Cascade Mountains are incredibly beautiful, as are the Olympic Mountains. All of Washington is gorgeous, plus they've got the Pacific Ocean!!! Incredible.

Sigh. I miss both places - Washington and the Hills.

Crisis? What crisis? Upper Higgins Gulch is as electric green as i've ever seen it: coulda been coastal Oregon up there.

Really? It's not a tinderbox up there? Has the gulch been getting moisture?

It all looks pretty good for Rally: many lightning strikes near O'Neill Pass late afternoon. Damned near got killed by a logging truck on the Upper Tinton Road because the dust is really bad.

Will head up by Moon today then south to Dewey.

Photos later today after Ricky's post quits getting traffic.
