HB 1234 Referendum Drive in Madison Saturday Morning! Join Us!

Would you like to sign a petition to refer the Governor's education plan to a public vote in November? Better yet, would you like to circulate a petition to help us give all South Dakotans a chance to vote on this important legislation?

Then join some of my friends and me here in Madison Saturday morning for our big HB 1234 Petition Push!

  • When: Saturday, June 2, 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
  • Where: Meet at Mochavino downtown, then spread out around town
  • How: block by block, knock by knock!
  • Why: because you don't want Pierre wasting $15,000,000 on policies that will wreck our public schools!

If you'd like to help, beating HB 1234 is as simple as 1-2-3-4:

  1. Walk up and down your favorite street, knock on every door.
  2. Get registered South Dakota voters to sign the form (we have extras for you!).
  3. Bring the petitions back to Mochavino at noon.
  4. Hand your signed forms to us: we notarize them for you on the spot and put them in the mail.

If you need talking points, well, I've got you covered (see also here, here, here, here, here, here, and here.) But you don't need to work that hard: this petition darn near sells itself. You say "Governor's education plan" and "public vote," and you've got nearly 50% signing right there.

If you don't have time to gather signatures, we'd still be glad to have you drop by and sign your name to the petition. Catch us at Mochavino around 9:30 a.m. or at our finish time around noon, and we'll happily take your Jane or John Hancock.

And just so you know, petitioneers, Madison is fertile ground for signatures. I took a jaunt around my side of the lake last night. I spoke with 22 people. One declined to sign because of working for the state. Three declined to sign because they'd already signed another form. The other eighteen all signed. (Think about that, Russ. Think hard.)

Teachers, retired teachers, parents, taxpayers—you all have a dog in this fight! Come sign! Come circulate! Come give voters the chance to say how they want to run their schools! Saturday, June 2, 9:30 a.m.

Get Feisty: Fight HB 1234!

Hey, Cory, are they emailable? I know a good few people who would sign that I'd send some of to if you'll email me a PDF.

I do not recant and will not sign.
I am FOR giving good teachers more money.

Carter, let me look into that. Note that you can't just send a electronic version to somebody, have them sign electronically and e-mail it back. You have to hand a signer a hard copy, watch them sign it, then take the petition to a notary public and get it notarized.

Grudz: Recant. Recant. HB 1234 may give a few good teachers money, but it won't give all the good teachers more money. More importantly, it will not improve the educational outcomes of our public schools, and it will not stop smart graduates from going out of state to get much larger salaries. Come sign, vote No in November, and help us come up with a plan that will really work.

About a week ago I mailed in two completed and notarized petitions. Getting signatures was the easiest ever.

I signed outside the county office yesterday. The guy with the clipboard was busy busy.
