Don’t Nuke the Hills: Black Hills Uranium Meeting Thursday in Rapid City

Your neighbors in Dakota Rural Action and the Clean Water Alliance are spreading the word about the harm that Powertech will do to Black Hills tourism and our water supply if we let the Canadian company mine Custer and Fall River counties for uranium. Their efforts have already roused enough public concern to get the Department of Environment and Natural Resources to postpone Powertech's water permit hearing for at least a couple months, which gives everyone more time to study the science around pumping millions of gallons of water a day into the ground to force uranium to the surface.

Now DRA and CWA are hosting a meeting public meeting on Black Hills uranium mining:

  • When: Thursday, December 13, 2012, 6:30 p.m.
  • Where: First Floor Community Room, City/School Administration Complex, 300 Sixth Street, Rapid City, SD

Here's the DRA/CWA pitch for the meeting:

Rapid City, SD – Dakota Rural Action and Clean Water Alliance are hosting a community information meeting to discuss the history, current status, and effects of uranium mining in the Black Hills. This meeting is open to the public to learn about the issues surrounding a proposal for a new uranium mining operation by the Canadian company, Powertech.

A panel of Black Hills environmental and legal experts will discuss topics around Powertech’s application to use our aquifer ground water as a means to extract uranium ore using an in situ leach mining process. They will address the technical, humanistic and legal issues around water demand and drought, public health and radioactive waste.

The Clean Water Alliance is a diverse collection of citizens concerned about the health, environmental and economic impacts that proposed uranium mining projects would have on our communities, people, economy, and natural resources. Their goal is to prevent uranium mining in the Black Hills region and protect our valuable resources - especially water - for future generations.

Dakota Rural Action is a grassroots family agriculture and conservation group that strives to build leadership through community organizing by giving people a strong voice in decisions affecting their quality of life. The Black Hills Chapter organizes around local food, community, agricultural land preservation, energy, and natural resources.

Please join us to learn more on Thursday December 13th at 6:30pm. We’ll meet at the City School Administration Complex in the First Floor Community Room, 300 6th Street, Rapid City, South Dakota.
