Pistols in Pierre, Cars in the Courthouse — Betty Olson’s Logic Lacking

Betty Olson lives in fear. The Prairie City Republican is afraid of mountain lions and wolves are overrunning our state. She's afraid to go substitute teach without a gun. And apparently, she doesn't even feel safe in the Capitol or any other government building. After the wise defeat yesterday of a bill that would have negated South Dakota's concealed weapons permit statutes, Rep. Betty Olson says she's bringing up a bill to allow us all to carry concealed weapons in local, state, and federal government buildings.

Rep. Olson's peccable logic:

You know that $10 that I pay to buy my concealed weapons permit? And that money all goes back to state and local government?... I should be allowed to come into every state-funded building, built with taxpayer money, with that state-approved $10 permit and my concealed weapon [Rep. Betty Olson (R-28B/Prairie City), quoted by David Montgomery, "Betty Olson bringing bill letting concealed weapons into government buildings," Political Smokeout, 2013.01.24].

Yes... and I paid $20 to renew my driver's license. My $20 went back the government and helped build state-funded buildings. That obviously gives me twice as much right as a concealed-weapon permit-holder to come into a state-funded building with my state-approved $20 permit and my Volkswagen.

Cars in the courthouse—just as logical and just as necessary as Betty Olson's pistol in Pierre.

Maybe somebody should inform Rep. Olson that legislating permission for carrying guns into federal buildings need to start elsewhere.

I would laugh if it weren't so sad that she probably represents the majority feeling in her district.

Didn't realize it's a tough gig to sub in Prairie City

    "Betty Olson lives in fear."

No Cory, you and many of your education cohorts live in fear of the very people who pay your salary, all because they may have a gun. The SDEA president proved that very clearly.

  5. Steve Sibson 2013.01.25

As I type we have tearful testimony in the House Education committee that people are afraid of guns.

The SDGOP is apparently just one more endangered species Betty has targeted: what a scary life she must lead.

  7. Suzy 2013.01.25

Everyone in Betty Olson's district must be idiots.

    Another idiotic Republican solution:
Too many guns, too many kids killed in school, Solution: More guns everywhere.

Maybe she should focus on the liquor industry. After the RC drinking contest that led to vomiting on the virgin, pristine ice at the rink, legislators might think a bit about legislating against chugging contests and tax the liquor sales to the point the taxes cover the social costs that industry dumps on responsible citizens.

You are right Mr. Wiken. It is another idiotic solution. Almost all of the firearms bills are knee-jerk reactions. But they are reactions to what most conservatives see as a democratic attack on the 2nd admendment. But just between you and I some of the democratic solutions to this problem are a little absurd also.

"Too many guns, too many kids killed in school"

Doug, just so you know, the schools are gun-free zones, and yes too many are killed. But for the ones that survive, they are being taught anti-gun rights far-left propaganda that will cause the level of killing we saw in Nazi Germany and Stalin's Soviet Union.

SS's post @ 11:51 am... Outrageous. Paging Governor Bobby Jindal and Chris Christie. Please save your party.

Mark, thanks for helping demonstrate my point. You are obviously a victim of the propaganda.

  13. Mark 2013.01.25

Steve: What is the source that backs up your assertion regarding what is being taught in our schools?

  14. larry kurtz 2013.01.25

sibby does what the voices in head tell him to do just like pp lets his wallet speak for him.

  15. Steve Sibson 2013.01.25

"What is the source that backs up your assertion regarding what is being taught in our schools?"

    The teachers.

  16. larry kurtz 2013.01.25

thought you went to catholic school, sib.

Do nuns and priests carry guns in catholic schools/churches?

  18. Steve Sibson 2013.01.25

"Do nuns and priests carry guns in catholic schools/churches?"

The Catholic Church's position on gun control is not easy to find; there are dozens of speeches and talks and a few documents that call for much tighter regulation of the global arms trade, but what about private gun ownership?

The answer is resoundingly clear: Firearms in the hands of civilians should be strictly limited and eventually completely eliminated.

I would very much like to see one teacher from ND or SD show me any syllabus that speaks to the gun issue in the manner that Steve Sibson states or anything on the record of anyone who advocates that this will eventually cause the level of killing seen in Nazi Germany or Stalinist Russia.

As supporters of the Second Amendment, educators, and law enforcement struggle to find common ground and reasonable measures to protect students, teachers and staff, your irresponsible statements do nothing to reasonably contribute to the debate.
As a supporter of the Constitution and all of its amendments, and as a professional working with one of the largest school districts in ND for over a decade, I have never have seen or heard an educator suggest that. And my job is involved, in large part, with violence prevention and conflict resolution.

Mark, have you been reading Cory's posts, He is a teacher. Listen to the testimony on HB1087. And based on your question on Nazi Germany and Stalin's Soviet Union, you do not understand the purpose behind the Second Amendment, which you will not find in a K-12 syllabus.

  21. Dana P. 2013.01.26

Why is Ms Olson so a-scared to go anywhere in this state? South Dakota is one of the safest states in the nation! I guess the gun "dog whistle" gets her a safe seat in Pierre everytime!

Steve S. The Anti-Defamation League is calling your name..."historically inaccurate and offensive" "people use it for shock value" - "appalling ignorance is both disgusting and dangerous"..... please stop the references to the Holocaust. It truly is an insult. Either you are intentionally doing it, or you are being very naive to the propaganda. Which is it?

Dana, you're right: there's been no testimony that our schools face a security crisis. Betty Olson is seeing bogeymen.
